DEEP LOOK is an ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
---
Aphids are one of gardeners’ most hated pests. They’re incredibly prolific, seemingly popping up overnight to take down your favorite veggies.
"Aphids are just experts at reproducing," said Ian Grettenberger an entomologist at the University of California, Davis. "Given the right conditions, they can multiply really quickly and get out of control.
For most of the year female aphids giving live birth to clones that are themselves already pregnant. That means that most of the time, all of the aphids you see in your garden are pregnant females.
When their population gets big enough and the plant they’re on starts to wane, aphids start giving birth to a new type of winged clones called alates. Amazingly, the alates are genetically identical to their wingless mothers. The alates take to the air to find new plants to colonize.
--- What do aphids eat?
Aphids use their pointy stylet to pierce plant leaves and such out the sugary sap. Usually, plants can handle a light infestation, but aphids reproduce quickly. Heavily infested leaves yellow and wither. Aphids can also carry viruses that they spread between the different plants they feed on.
--- How do aphids spread?
Aphids give birth to winged clones called alates that fly from plant to plant. Since aphids can clone themselves, it only takes one aphid to infiltrate your garden and start causing trouble.
--- How do I get rid of aphids?
Some gardeners use oils and pesticide sprays to get rid of aphids but it’s very challenging to get every last one of them. You can purchase predators like lacewing larvae to hunt and eat aphids. You can also purchase parasitoid wasps that lay their eggs in aphids, killing them.

Why would you have a negative view of ladybugs?
Does anyone know what happens to the baby aphids in pregnant aphids when the pregnant aphids are injected with eggs? Do they fight against the wasp larvae or get eaten in the belly as well?
@@CatMowpurr They get eaten, I guess that's a logical conjecture
same here
Ladybugs don't seem to survive here in the Sonoran Desert, so I noticed something interesting. Birds have taken up the ladybug's niche. Thanks to a hummingbird feeder and a pesticide free yard, the Verdins and Gnatcatchers keep our yard almost completely free of aphids. When we're low on aphids, they use the hummingbird feeder. Ever since year those little guys realized we had a tasty buffet waiting for them, they have been coming through every winter and spring.

I was so taken aback by how they give birth to live babies and my mind was like “how is this even possible..?” And then I realized humans just do the same thing.

My new 1440p HDR monitor is happy.
Thanks Miss Isabelle!
I have to highly recommend Journey to the Microcosmos then.
Yup
I feel that it should be added that aphids are all female during the spring and summer months, but some species switch from this model of all female cloning into male and female in order to make eggs that can hibernate through the winter when it's too cold for the adults, before starting the all female cloning process anew the following spring.
I was trying to figure out how these animals could've evolved if all of their offsprings were clones, now it makes more sense, they should have included it
@Dexhead i dont think he is saying males can be cloned? He says they switch from cloning into male female reproduction.
@Dexhead If they cannot be cloned, where do they come from? Do they stay alive the whole spring to be able to reproduce for the next year? I am just asking, since I cannot see the whole picture yet. I think they should have talked about this topic on the video
I'm more curious about how they are born pregnant
Hi Veran Yean! You're right about the male clones later in the season, especially in places with colder winters. We had so much to cover in this episode we didn't get to that part since we figured it would take a while to explain. Also, I couldn't find any male aphids or eggs to film in time to make it into the episode. It's always a challenge to figure out what we have time to cover on any given subject like this. Cheers- Josh Cassidy
This was fascinating makes me deep dive into the insects world more
Fun fact: ladybug larvae eat a lot more aphids than the iconic adults, so those packs of adult ladybugs you can buy as aphid control don't work super well unless you maintain suitable habitat for them to lay eggs and let the larvae feast.
I feel it is important to educate people on what ladybug larvae look like, because they are conventionally "creepy" looking and people may kill them on accident thinking they are a pest or might bite.
For those who don't know, ladybugs larva look like tiny black-and-red facehuggers, basically
I think the larvae are cool. I don't see how you could find them creepy, although I guess I already know they are harmless so that might affect it.
@@somuchsoul3041 I looked it up and they look so cool!
I just google searched it, and I can't believe how that thing turns into a red lady bug, like there's no way!! Its looks like a complete different creature at its larval stage!

"Did your charming image of ladybugs just get shattered?"
After this video, i think it just reinforced it.
I knew that ladybugs are gardeners’ friends since I was a kid due to my grandparents and dad gardening a lot. I think was my dad that first told me ladybugs eat harmful bugs on plants. He also told little me when I see a ladybug, I need to be very careful to not accidentally squish it so it can fly off and protect the plants. It’s one of those things that just stuck with me. Whenever I see a ladybug I smile. That little spotted creature helps us get food in our bellies.
@@caraleroux2833 I just remember a Magic School Bus book talking about it.
sad I used to hurt them cause I was thinking them as a pest. :(
@@caraleroux2833 well yes and no, ladybugs are a gardeners friend but not the adult stage since they still eat aphids but not as effective as their kids. A ladybug larva eats aphids by the hundreds, i keep a lady bug colony ready in case i need them ;)

Agreed. at least for us mammals, death only comes in 2 ways, death from old age or by being eaten. Insects have much more ways to kill you.
Note: I’m not including humans because we generally do worse to our own kind than we do to other animals and insects.

They’re so tiny but their damage is massive to plants
Only if their natural enemies have been supressed or removed. Most plants cope with aphids quite well.
@@sylviahacker6695 The problem is ants. Many invasive species of ants that dont have predators that can handle them (argentine ants being the biggest problem) farm the aphids uncontested. Since the aphids natural enemies just get killed by the invasive ants, they grow out of control.
