    1. Get a drive at Redbull, replace Checo

    3. Get a drive at Merc for 1 - 2 years, jump ship to Redbull (risky)

Well, somewhat like that. I'm sure he would prefer to take Max seat over Checos. Would make him a top candidate for the 2025 title. But I doubt there will open up a seat at Red Bull. Merc is currently holding out for the slight chance to get Max. If they don't get him, they may offer just a one year + option contract. Not sure Sainz would accept that. Audi wants him. I suspect they give him more time. At least until the summer break.

Max already said he has no intention of leaving Red Bull as long as they produce a quick car so he's 100% staying next year even with Newey leaving. Sainz his only hope for a Red Bull is that Perez drops off hard like last year before Audi run out of patience and get someone else cause Sainz got too cute and overplayed his hand.
I don't see him at Mercedes either for one year as father Sainz is a very big figure in Audi's Dakar program and with Mercedes and Audi being enemies in the same market of cars, a Sainz at Audi and Mercedes may create a conflict of interest. Also Toto was willing to lose their crown jewel in Lewis Hamilton of all people to keep Kimi Antonelli in the Mercedes family and a single year as a stop gap is not something Sainz is going to accept.

Cause if Audi has any kind of self respect, this constant waiting comes across as Sainz saying...
"I'm not actually thinking about you seriously and I don't believe in your project at all. You're just a plan C in case plan A Red Bull and plan B Mercedes don't work out and I don't have a seat next year. You're an afterthought."
Also for drivers they can just keep Bottas who has tons of experience in a top team and is reliable.
Or if you want someone new, Ocon is doing great so far this year despite the lack of points and his deal does run out after this year.

Do any of you think Max internally also wants to like actually race now? As in battles and overtakes and hard racing to the top. Because for the past 2 years all he has been doing is glorified practice sessions in races with one or two moments of brilliant overtakes and stuff. Even when he starts behind, teams and drivers just give him space to overtake to not lose time fighting an inevitably lost battle. Do not get me wrong, I am fine with his domination and him winning championships, but the Max I used to love watching was for his impeccable racecraft and insurmountable talent rather than the start on pole, finish first machine he has now become. I really miss the actual racing part from Max's side like pre '21. A live example of his dissent to this exact situation is that he gets more excited fighting for positions in iRacing rather than in real life f1.

I think this is actually the right move for sainz.
Audi will still be a back marker next year, and in 26, I think the best they can realistically hope for is midfield scrapping. It’ll be, optimistically, 3 years before Audi are anywhere close to winning even a single miracle race ala hungary21 or monza 20/21.
Right now, I think sainz is angling for red bull, with merc as a backup, and considering merc are perusing verstappen, that plan works for both parties. Even optimistically, antonelli won’t be in a position for a merc seat until 2026, at which point sainz will have other options (maybe stroll retires, maybe checo or verstappen leaves RB. Williams might be further up the grid) and that assumes that Toto will promote antonelli so quickly, and looking at Russell, that’s not Toto’s style. Antonelli likely won’t be in the merc until 2027, at which point there will be seats aplenty for a high calibre driver like sainz at teams like Aston, Audi, perhaps Andretti, or elsewhere.
This is a better plan than people think, Audi won’t be competitive for years, and sainz needs a competitive seat right now if he wants to fight for a title, red bull is the best, and he can go to merc as a backup which keeps him in a works team that will be semi competitive to keep his name in the headlines.

I think Sainz going to Mercedes for 1 year then going to Audi would be best for all parties. Kimi could get a year at Williams to get acclaimed to F1 before going to Merc for 26. Carlos would get another year in a somewhat competitive car so that he wouldn't feel like he was wasting a year of his career. It would also give Mercedes a good idea of how Russell stacks up against Sainz as a good benchmark. I'm sure Audi wants him for 2025 but it wouldn't be a huge loss getting him for 2026.
I mean they could keep that $35m from Zhou for another year, give Valterri a final send off year, or even try out Porchaire or Maloney. I mean it would be hard to work out but if both of these teams could work together with these contracts this could be a solution.

  • @viewed_by_heather

Carlos has previously said he doesn’t want to go to a team that’s short term contracts but I think he might be thinking about / wanting to go back to Ferrari after Lewis retires so maybe he isn’t looking for a long term project like Audi would be. I can also empathize that it would really suck to go from Ferrari…to the Sauber tractor ☹️ going from one of the best teams on the grid to one of the worst. I also think people are not taking into account how long Audi’s growing pains could be, ofc it could only be a year or two and then they’re competing at the top but it could also be five or more years. you never know what could happen, what sort of regulatory changes the FIA could introduce at any point so I 100% understand why he’s trying to maneuver his contact the way he is and I hope he gets what he needs out of it.

This is sadly one of the many reasons i've predicted Sainz will not get a seat for 2025. Sainz will obviously want to see all options and get the best one, and teams wont wait for him. I sadly dont see Sainz getting a seat for next season. I do expect him to be back for 2026 though. He's simply too good to be sidelined for more than 1 season

While it's not likely to be with Sauber next year, I really hope Theo Pourchaire gets an opportunity at some point because he deserves to be in F1, not just because he's the current F2 champion, he's got potential but it's ruined by drivers having too many permanent contracts
I'm not discrediting IndyCar but he ends up having a career over there then it's possibly a wasted opportunity and a massive shame
I can't see Bottas in F1 next year, no matter his marketing potential or luck, I hope Zhou gets a chance next year if the appeal of F1 in China is attractive to other teams

I’d try to work out a 1 year loan deal to red bull. It would benefit all parties the most. Audi gets the driver they want, Carlos doesn’t have to spent a year in a backmarker car and red bull would probably pay a hefty price even for a1 year option with sainz.

Honestly when it comes to Bottas given the Mercedes have been having such a disaster with car development. I think he would be a perfect stop gap for them. Allowing them to send their junior to William on loan to gain experience and then use a driver there already familiar with to help them sort out their kinks and problems.
I personally don’t see Red Bull going for Carlos just based on the press releases that I’ve already come out. It doesn’t really sound too much like they want him. Personally, I think Carlos should just sign that Audi deal as much as they might be behind at first I think it would do him a lot of good to be there from day one and help build that project up. Not to mention it would be most likely a long-term contract and more job security than what he would get with another team. I think he should sign at least a three-year deal for the Audi project because I think him and Nico could really get things going properly there from the start but to do that you need two people that are vocal and Carlos being able to pull his own strategy when he needs to. I think it’s the perfect driver for them. Not to mention he’s very vocal with things and I don’t see that working at Red Bull.
