Hallo ich bin schumi und 88 jahre alt. wohne in hamburg.hab noch nie so einen kontakt zur musik gehabt.finde das angebot einfach sehr sehr gut.vielen dank.
Used to go to Chris Barber’s. club in Oxford Street. What a wonderful player was Monty. Those days could drive home in West London, not see many cars. Great memories, greater days. Must thank our many politicians who over the years have destroyed the culture of England, of which Chris Barber and Monty played a great part.
During my RAF days in RAF Hospital Wegberg, Germany -1956-59, I bought a clarinet-after listening to Monty Sunshine & Chris Barber, we started a small skiffle/trad jazz group and played at station dances and such. Wonderful days, thanks to musician's like Monty & Chris. Great days. He is now playing with the angels. Shevill Mathers - Tasmania 2012
I had great pleasure in sitting in with Monty's Band; he was my hero and he was the main influence in playing jazz clarinet, over 50 years ago. Such a pleasure in hearing this again.
Hey Dad, listening to this feels as if you are just somewhere around the house! Brings back lots and lots of good memories. Lots of sunshine from the hot countries we lived in. Love you
I was Monty's driver and soundman for the last 8 years of his playing days and on a couple of occasions, possibly if he'd had one lemonade too many, he'd start with The Old Rugged Cross and then after a couple of solo's from the band would come back to his mic and resume with Just A Closer Walk With Thee... Monty was a good boss and a lovely man, a pleasure to have known him..
@@mazda1942 Thanks for your suggestion. tbh, trad jazz is not my genre (more of a classical man!) so I had never heard of PF. However, I have had a listen to a few pieces and, yep, very good also. But, I'll stick with Monty, and these will be 'personal' reasons, as I prefer his tone and, for me, he seems to play with a little more 'ease' if that makes sense. But, I have enjoyed PF and will certainly listen to him again when I am in a 'trad mood', and wouldn't it be a weird world if we all liked the same thing!! best wishes, ns.
I can vividly remenber the Barber band at the Trent Bidge Hotel in 1956. Little did we know we were listening to one of the great bands that would still be going strong 35 years later. What a performance through thick and thin. That is genius.
Saddened to read below that Monty has passed on. He often used to visit The Sakespeare Hotel at Woolwich , which was the home of The Hot Club of London. It was run by that great pioneer of British jazz, George Webb in the late fifties and sixties. Monty used to join our small group of fans in the intervals to tell us the latest dirty joke and to collect even more. A great guy and a great musician. I bet he's up there in heaven jamming away with the all time greats.
Remember Chris and the band at Dudley Hippodrome during the Sunday night big band concerts in the late 1950's always a pleasure when came to entertain.
I recently became Aware of Monty and clarinet A flat playing sure hope it is a rare A flat . I am enjoying him immensely since I have been over deluged with the popular B flat. His command of his technique playing is overly appreciated. Thanks for theposte
Old Rugged....Petite Fleur.....Wild Cat Blues. Monty is our biggest idol. Thank you. Greetings from OK-Dreamband. Cd "Clarinet-Dreams" is available for download (iTunes, amazon).
This was in 1994 (not 1990!), celebrating the 40th anniversary of Chris Barber's professional band which was founded on May 31st 1954. The "1954 band" would play the first half followed by the current band in the second half. Here we see and hear founding members Chris (tb), Pat Halcox (tp), Monty Sunshine (cl) and Jim Bray (b). Lonnie Donegan (bj) was sidelined by a cold for a day or two so Johnny McCallum stepped in. Original drummer Ron Bowden could not do the whole tour, so here it's COLIN Bowden who covered parts of it. This was filmed in Rastatt, Germany.
This is beautiful! Monty and the whole band are brilliant, but I think Colin Bowden deserves a mention for the distinctive sound that comes from a band whenever he is involved.
@Vanderdecken1 Lauschen, zuhören, geniessen, der Wehmut und den Tränen freien Lauf lassen, und mit einem Lächeln daran denken was gewesen........................
I love this, any version by him. I used to watch him in the early '50's (I'm 74) and he still gets to me. Have you seen my duet version? I called it 'Monty twice'.
Monty was playing in the Wardroom (Officer's Mess) at HMS Condor, Arbroath in July,1970. The chairman of the JRs' club asked the band to play in the club on the Saturday as the camp was being closed. The band performed Saturday and Sunday - for free I think - what a fantastic couple of days those were. Seem to think that quite a lot of booze got drunk that weekend.
I , also, was there! At that time I was serving in HM Royal Marines Band and vividly remember seeing Monty, and band, in the JRs NAAFI club on the Saturday morning. I took part in the closing down of HMS Condor and the RM Band led the march through Arbroath for the Freedom of the City celebrations. I loved my time at Condor and sad times at the closing down. Great days.
THE MOST TALENTED GIFT FROM ABOVE MONTY MAY UR SOUL REST IN PERFECT PEACE, MAY THE LORD ANGELS MEET U WITH THIS SAME SWEET PRAISES IN HEAVEN. FOR WHAT U SOLE IS WHAT U HARVEST AMEN.
Thanks to Monty, he inspired me to take up clarinet in the late 1950’s, a simple system instrument that I later sold and bought the morel popular system. Wish I had kept that bit of my musical history-hindsight is a wonderful thing. Had we kept many of our past purchases, we could have made a fortune on the ‘antique’ market. The plastic junk of today won’t even last long enough to be worth anything.👍😁🎼🇬🇧

Excellent. Monty was the business. Love Petit Fleur too.
he performed this tune in public for over 35 years with never a bum note, Magnificant.
Even better, he nevre played it in the same way twice. The flow of ideas never stopped, the sign of a geat jazzman.
Could listen to Monty all evening, such a delight.
One word to sum this up : PERFECT
Quel régal, quelle interprétation, quelle douceur et sensibilité, un vrai bonheur à écouter en boucle.
A pleasure to hear good music
could listen to this all night
never without this music, thank you
BLISS. THE best Trad Jazz clarinettist EVER. RIP Monty - God Bless You.
Pete Fountain would be my choice

Monty played an Albert system clarinet, which is quite a rarity in the UK.
Thanks for the explanation! So this might be just one facet of his unique and special and pleasant to listen to style.
Just sweet.
