    my clip comment:
In 1953 Ken Colyer and his Jazzmen recorded several tunes which came out on a 10" Lp called "From London to New Orleans". As a 16 year old and a beginning jazz cornet player I was able to get this LP. with Ken Colyer tpt, Monty Sunshine clt and Chris Barber trombone.
For many of us this was a new style of New Orleans jazz that set a sample and became a standard of how our beloved jazz should be played. Both Ken and Chris's bands had a big influence on my jazz development. Only some 6-8 years later I became familiar with the Eddie Condon Style which gave me an opportunity to look at traditional with a somewhat different view. Once I emmigrated to Canada and eventually landed in the Climax Jazz Band comprised mainly of Brits I got back in the British traditional jazz stream.
Then, I was playing at the 1994 Sacramento Festival and I met drummer Colin Bowden. He told me that he was part of the Chris Barber's 40th Jubilee concert tour, a tour of close to 100 concert hall concerts throughout Europe where Chris would not only feature his much more modern Jazz and Blues Band but also play with his original band, with as many of the original members available.
Shortly after I found this German concert film of one of these performances. You'll see and hear the Chris Barber Band playing "The Isle of Capri" with Chris on trombone, Pat Halcox on trumpet, Monty Sunshine on clarinet, Jim Bray on bass, Johnny McCallum on banjo and Colin Bowden on drums. Nostalgia for them, but certainly for me as well.
Some of you were there at that time in the fifties and sixties, and I think it was a darn good time!

    Norman Angell, 2 March 2021.
Just announced today that Chris Barber has died today aged 90.
The last link with all the great British Trad bands I enjoyed watching as a young man, I am nearly 85 now.
Names like Freddy Randall. Humphrey Littleton, Sid Phillips, Ken Colyer and just a bit later Acker Bilk.
Who will carry on with this fantastic music we all enjoyed?
Thank God we have Alexa to remind us of happy days in Tradland.
Rest in Peace Chris, in my book you were top of the pile!

    Brilliant!
I've got tears in my eyes.
My dad was a drummer in the Clyde valley stompers and Jim Mcharg's Scotsville Jazzmen.
This music brings back great memories.
Going out to see a 'Trad' band tonight.(in S. California) I hope they're good.

Not a darn good time but a GREAT time and the best time of my life!. Living in Hammersmith gave me access to all the great venues. At one time, working in London, during some dinner breaks, if my memory still works properly, for I think a Shilling, which included a tiny carton of milk and an apple, the International Wool Secretariat had Trad. Jazz in their basement área, for an hour, would you believe. Brilliant to spend the afternoon back at work with that music ringing in your ears!! Happy, happy days!!

erwigfilms thanks for all you share and for those priceless insider comments. puzzled about date of Isle of Capri 1994 compared to all the others in the Chris Barber 40th Jubilee Tour which are shown as 1990 all appear to be in the same place and time - maybe 1994 is try coz it is 40 years after band formed in th 1954 ??? erwigfilms thanks for all you share and I enjoy your inside comments and your history. I am puzzled by the Isle of Capri in the Chris Barber 40th Jubilee Tour that youstate is from 1994 but the other pieces are refered to as 1990 - they all appear to be in the same place and I suspect at the same time so is it 1990 or 1994 (1994 would be more appropriate coz it would be 40 years after the band formed in 1954) Thanks again ULAJAZZ new boy on the block
