    It means I can tow my caravan with my van instead of using my car on the limit so it's brilliant and safer

    Brilliant video, I had to do my Class 2 and then Class 1 when I passed my test in 2008. Didn’t have to do my CPC and only drove for a few year before it came mandatory. Be nice if they got rid of of that. What I will say is don’t put the car on a flatbed van (probs get prosecuted for being overweight and driving otherwise in accordance with a licence), so just stick with a single vehicle and the trailer with a vehicle on.
    Even driving on your car licence, do not drive any double wheelbase Mercedes, VW or Iveco vans as they will be a C1 licence. Double wheel base transits are ok, just don’t exceed 3.5 tonne MAM and you’ll be fine. If it’s got a tacho in it, don’t drive it.

    I’m pleased because it means I’ll be able to tow a larger caravan. I never understood why people who passed before 1997 were better qualified than me who passed 2 years later…good news.

    What's more dangerous a 7½ ton lorry or a fully laden 3.5 ton van towing 3.5 ton ? I can't see why the don't just let post 97 car drivers drive a 7½ ton lorry. This has been brought in to lighten the load of HGV testers they test the trailers. They need more HGV drivers and have made the HGV test easier no reversing and no hitching up. Before 97 you could get a job driving 7½ ton see if you like it you could go for the higher licence. Now people are put off buy the cost of the test and don't even know if they like the job.

    Hello! I totally agree with you. I'm from Sweden. Were still a member in the EU union. Its almost the same rules as in the UK. Driver license before 96 here in Sweden, are allowed to drive a car or buss with unlimited weight. I now that uk are not a member of the EU union anymore. Anyway there is a law in the EU that allow every country to decide if, a person that had a driver license B for at least 2 years. To drive a lorry that weighs up to 4250 kg instead of 3500 kg. The requirements on the vehicle is that 1. Only electric vehicle with no emission at all. 2 a car or lorry thats only made for transporting things goods.
    My opinion is that they should allow every driver that had the license for 2 years or so to drive a vehicle up to 4250 kg. They should allow any vehicle not only lorries that transporting goods with electric engines.
    My explanation is that: today vehicle are much safer than like 30 years ago. We have better brakes, safety systems like abs asc and so.
    Because of the safety systems and all electric things. The vehicle weighs much more.
    For example the are Volkswagen lt 35 from the 80s that can transport 1600-1700 kg Cars. If you get a mercedes sprinter they will not allow you to transport much more than 1100-1300 kg Cars.
    The biggest problem with the 3500 kg limit is for the distribution lorries. They always drive with overweight. Thats not strange because of the maximal goods weight is like 700 kg.
    So we in all the countries should start a votation to high the limit to 4250 kg.
    I'm going to take the be license. I agree with you. It should be like the test for b96. Before 2013 the be license had unlimited weight of trailer. But now its limited to a weight of 3500 kg.
    In Sweden a 50 mm tow ball are limited to 3500 kg. And a 60 mm tow ball are limited to 6000 kg. Not so many 60 mm trailers but in the us there are trailers with 60 mm.
    Sorry for a long message but i'm also think it should be a change.

    Pretty sure the rules around 7.5 ton are not changing as that is the C1 entitlement and it is only the trailer part so you'll still be limited to 3.5 ton vehicles. The only change coming for towing is you (and I since I passed in 98) will be given category BE so you'll be able to tow the trailer and car home legally.

      @@CARTALKUK I know, I said that ha ha
      I mentioned it because you were talking about loading vehicles on the towing vehicle AND towing another which won't work as you won't get the 7.5ton entitlement.

      @CARTALKUK  2 года назад

      If the vehicle that is towing is under 3.5t so my recovery truck with a car on its bed and a trailer with a car on is under 3.5t then I will be able to tow it under the new rules

    • @thebaldconvict
      @thebaldconvict 2 года назад +1

      @@CARTALKUK Ah ok, so I guess you are talking a small recovery truck or lightweight cars as your car license doesn't allow more than 3.5 ton which includes the car being recovered.
      Cool, I think the new rules are great by the way, I can finally shift the mother in laws caravan without stumping up for the trailer test :)

    • @CARTALKUK
      @CARTALKUK  2 года назад +1

      What will change later in 2021
      If you passed your car driving test from 1 January 1997, you’ll be allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM when the law changes.
      DVLA will update your driving licence record to show that you’re allowed to tow trailers. You’ll get category BE added to your driving licence when you get a new photocard driving licence.
      You do not need to contact DVLA for this to happen. It will be done automatically.
      So I can tow a trailer up to the weight of 3.5t and my vehicle can be up to 3.5t so the over all weight of the vehicle and trailer can be over all 7t ....up to 3.5t car or recovery truck and 3.5t trailer
      Hear is the government website

    Scrapping this test is brilliant..
    Most people who tow (mostly caravans) are pre 1997 licence holders anyway with zero training... also most have 125cc motorcycle licence on the driving licence as a given aswell ? Doesn't mean they all ride motorcycles just because it's on the licence... ?
    All these years of rambling about safety to post 1997 license holders and forcing tests do nothing. Know your limitations.
    We often see people on the road who just drive cars and wonder how they passed the test. Dumb People cause accidents with or without a trailer on.
    Do I feel sorry for Dave and his trailer training business that's gone pop overnight, no I dont !
    Towing isnt rocket science !!
    But if you think you can do it but come unstuck then prepare to look an idiot.
    Bad drivers with bad judgement are poor road users not people with trailers.

      Totally agree Andrew I Don think I could fly a para motor I can legally go and buy one and fly it just like you can but I wouldn't as i Don't feel confident so i would do some training first, I could buy a boat and go down the local canal I've done it before as I felt confident.. towing wise my mate is 50 his licence is pre 97 and he can't reverse a trailer I passed in 2008 and can with ease never had training. Some people just understand towing naturally

    So does this mean I can buy a over 3.5 ton recovery truck on normal license and carry anything upto 7t?

    • @CARTALKUK
      @CARTALKUK  2 года назад +1

      No it means you can buy a truck under 3.5t and tow a trailer but the combined weight can't be over 7t so max weight of the truck with a car on the back can be 3.5t and the max weight of the trailer with a car can be 3.5t

      At the moment it's 750kg un braked or 3.5t including the vehicle and trailer
      So if the car weight is 2.0t you would be able to tow a trailer up to 1.5t along as the overall weight is under 3.5t but if the trailer is over 750kg it must be braked
      The new law is you can drive a car that has a weight of upto 3.5t and the trailer can weight up to 3.5t
