  • At the end of 2021, the government controversially decided that you no longer need to take a test to tow a caravan or trailer. Join Motorhome Matt this week as we explore these towing rule changes and how they've impacted the industry 18 months on.
We speak with Sharon Sparkes, a seasoned instructor from Mendip Towing Training, who shares her insights into the driver training industry and how instructors feel about the law changes.
Understand the details behind removing the B+E restriction on licenses, the importance of proper training and certification, the inherent risks of improper towing and whether these changes have led to increased accidents on the road.
We also revisit the upcoming review of the C1 license entitlement to hear firsthand the reasons behind the resistance to these rule changes. What does Sharon think the government will decide?

Interesting topic. Am a class 1 lorry driver and seening people in a car who can't drive or on randabouts taking up space from vehicles from the other lanes makes me think its not a good idea to let anyone tow over 750kg.
2 caravan towers, one next to another, coming up to multiple lane randabout is just a matter of time before they crash

Great podcast Matt. Will be interesting to see in September whether the towing law change has actually led to more accidents. I chose to take my Class2 HGV instead of the C1 test before we started using a larger over 3.5 tonne Motorhome and I must say it made me a much better driver and more confident behind the wheel so would be a big advocate for more driver training. Some form of CBT for towing large trailers and caravans I think would be wise.
Motorhomes over 3050kg ULW can do 70mph on the motorway.

Yes, we will definitely keep an eye out for that report. That is one of the main things that people should talk about when discussing further training, that it helps you to feel more confident and therefore be a better driver, it shouldn't be just a tick box.

Enjoy your vlogs. Really informative. One question with someone with cat B only on their licence towing a car and caravan over 3500kgs. Will they have problems when towing abroad. Here, in Portugal you need Cat B+E for over 3500kgs.

      Thank you
The UK licence rules apply abroad too. Certainly in Europe. I am not sure about elsewhere

I live on the NC500 and this year I've barely seen a caravan it seems to be all motorhomes.
If your towing a trailer behind a motorhome for advertising at shows that could be seen as "for hire and reward" and you'd need a tacho.

Hi Matt, Just wondering what the current driver licence rules/restrictions are in the UK for foreigners? I’m from Australia and intend in 2 years to begin touring the UK and Europe for 4 years in a motorhome. I’ve had a car licence in Australia since 1983. Can I drive a 3500kg and above motorhome? I have towed a large caravan for the past 25 years. Kind regards, Stuart

The rules for driving in the uk would be those imposed on you in Australia. You can drive here for up to 12 months before you need to take a test if you become resident.
