Namibia Road Trip - 10 Days - Alone with a pop-up tent

- 10 day Namibia road trip itinerary, starting in South Africa - 5800km - alone.
Please note that I started in Johannesburg. It all depends on where you start and if you travel clockwise, anti-clockwise, zig-zag or whatever :P
My route was as follows:
1. Johannesburg to Upington: 786km, 8h 20 min.
Kalahari Monate Lodge (SA) is your best bet for an all right camping experience. It is out of town which is nice. If you come from Jhb, drive through Botsuana if it’s not Covid times - a lot shorter!
2. Upington to Nakop Border Control (Ariamsvlei): 131km, 1h 35min. From there to Hobas: 266km, 3h 19 min.
Hobas is the entry point to the Fish River Canyon. I loved the Hobas Campsite, but the Canyon Roadhouse is a funky and amazing place to stay. PLEASE do not just go to the Canyon viewpoint but EXPLORE THE CANYON TO THE RIGHT AND LEFT. There are no signs & it is easy to miss some stunning views. The rocky outcrops to either side will catapult you into trying to grasp the sheer scale of the canyon - you'll feel tiny in the best way possible.
I did not stop here but check out Luderitz and Kolmanskop - the ghost town. It is so worth it!
3. Hobas to Sesriem: 551km, 6h 43 min.
Sesriem Campsite is all right, but I stayed at the Oshana Campsite and I LOVED IT.
I stayed for two nights but could have easily stayed longer. It is a bit more expensive but the better choice - also inside the park! You can also stay just past Soltaire at Moon Mountain Lodge - an hour drive from park entrance and two hours from Deadvlei and Sossusvlei. There is also Sossus Oasis for camping outside the park. From the park gates, it's about 1 hour to drive along a tarred road to a 2 wheel-drive parking area. Then pick up the National Parks 4x4 which will take you to Deadvlei and the more popular dunes. I drove myself. PLEASE CLIMB THE BIG DADDY DUNE! THE VIEW IS THE BEST WOW THING EVER. AND YES, YOU CAN RUN DOWN FROM THE TOP IN THE END !!!! Otherwise, climb Dune 45 for sunrise (more accessible and closer to the gates) and just explore.
I climbed on some other dune right behind the gate. Speak to people and gain insights - always the best guide.
4. Sesriem to Swakopmund: 348km, 4h 8 min.
On the way to Swakopmund, there is the Tropic of Capricorn Photo Opportunity…don’t worry if you miss it…I did :D…oh and stop at Solitaire (closer to Sesriem) to fuel up and take photos of the abandoned cars. There is sooo much to do in Swakopmund. Check out the tourist and tour options! I stayed in a backpackers that had just opened up again. I was their first guest :D But there is a camping place, too. Cool for the weekend and some beers. You'll meet Germans.
5. Swakopmund via Cape Cross to Spitzkoppe: 119km, 1h 16min & 154km, 2h 8 min.
The world’s largest breeding colony of Cape fur seals is on the way. Stop if you are interested. For me it was just death, death and more death…sadly. If you breathe through your nose, you’ll be fine. Spitzkoppe Camping is super beautiful but very remote. Make sure you plan for no electricity and have enough water and fuel. You can take a shower at reception and they give you a map. Explore and snap some photos at the Rock Archway. There are boulders, a unique landscape, ancient rock art and plenty of campsites that are apart from one another and wild.
6. Spitzkoppe to Etosha: 502km, 5h 38 min. It depends on where in Etosha you want to go.
The roads in Etosha suck and there are no little drives or nice loops… Personally, I have had better experiences in more diverse environments in other parks in Africa. Visiting is a personal choice though. I enjoyed Okaukuejo more than Halali camp. They both have a waterhole though.
Check out Northern Namibia, visiting an indigenous Himba village (done right), other things to do in Damaraland etc. The Caprivi Strip is also still on my list. You need a proper 4x4 though.
I was also told that the Waterberg Plateau National Park is a nice place to stop.
7. Etosha to Windhoek: 501km, 5h 14 min.
The Urban Camp is a lovely, safe place to camp in the city. Visit Joe’s Beerhouse around the corner!!! Personally, I only stopped in Windhoek due to the need on the way back.
8. Windhoek back to Nakop Border Control: 838km, 8h 35 min & Nakop Border to Upington: 132 km 1h 31 min. This is a very long drive and I recommend another stop. I did it in one go…but I am crazy.
9. Upington to Jhb: 795 km, 8h30 min. You save all that with a different starting point.
Important: Roads in Namibia are dangerous. Know your car and how to drive off-road. Be prepared for eventualities. Always fill up when you see a fuel station. Carry lots of water, fuel (I did not need them but had two jerry cans), jumpers, knives and pepper spray, tools, extra tires, puncture kit, towing rope (if you can afford it or rent a car, you’ll have roadside assistance), sand tracks, a satellite phone (I did not have that but would recommend), portable tire inflator...
If I can do it, everyone can!
Happy Travels!
This has to be the most authentic travel vlog i have seen for Namibia so far
thank you 😊
As a Namibian I was so proud to watch your video. Thanks for showing our country in such a beautiful light. I've been so scared to travel on my own but seeing this, I'm Def inspired to start. Thank you♥️
❤️☺️
Attitude, that's the secret. Yours is beautiful. A lifetime ago I cycled most of your route. On another trip we climbed the tallest dune at Sossusvlei. We lugged a large format camera complete with heavy silver plates up. We spent a night on the top as the plan was to take pictures of the sunrise. It rained for the first time in fifty years. No photos and it took weeks to get the water and sand out of the camera. Fantastic!
This put a big smile on my face ✨ What an awesome story!
Such a great video, so well done. I love Namibia and this takes me back there. I can't wait to return. Thank you
Thank you 💫
Once did an Africa Road Trip and drove down a Namibian Road. Their roads are straight roads. They are straight for up to ten kilometres or more in some sections. Their roads are quiet. Not much traffic because Namibia has a very low population density. Namibia is a good place to visit. I would recommend it for anyone ! Thank you for uploading this well researched and well documented Namibia Road Trip Video. Amazing !
I am impressed with your adventure. Very impressed
isnt it mad how the Namibian sand seems to get into your veins and capture your heart? With huge skies and open plains and vast amounts of nothingness yet so full and fascinating and enduring, the isolation from other humans, you can literally feel you finding your inner self. Namibia is stupifyingly beautiful in ways that words cannot explain, it must be experienced. I have been overlanding Namibia for over a decade and just cannot get enough, you have somehow captured just some of that beauty in this video......well fucking done Girl!
Thank you for these words. The best feeling is if you cannot get enough 😍
Just found your channel. Much respect for doing this trip! Hope to see more. Wishing you every success with this channel. Live your dream!!
This proves all you need is a Subaru and a pop up tent. Well done!
Exactly. In my case i didn't carry a tent i simply removed all the behind seats and i put a mattress in there and i slept in there😀😀, i was on road for 2 good months of adventure... Simplicity is the trick... I loved each piece of this video too, its incredible
So many rude and unnecessary comments.
I did enjoy your video. It was very wholesome.😊
I love Africa through bloggers. I wish to visit South Africa and Namibia..I hope so..I liked your blog very much.
Great video! Travelling with you there would be no arguing of what music we would be listening to. Heading to Namibia in November and look forward to going to the places you visited, thanks for the tour. Stay Wild!
Wow you did this alone... amazing
Amazing to see how she enjoyed this trip.
I like to imagine standing at the viewpoint during the time those canyons were formed witnessing the torrent of water carving through the earth...
That’s a great video, a few of us did nearly the exact same trip on motorcycles a few years ago. What a beautiful country and it’s people and very hospitable. OutJo fuel station on the right brought back memories ... a great trip through farming country to Omaruru, then onto Swakopmund, two weeks in total we spent touring and ended our trip in Cape Town. Thanks for sharing, Stay safe.
I would have been terrified in the tent alone……well done.
Go Girl! Amazing, you managed to distilled the essence of magical Namibia into twenty-five minutes of video 👍
Great video. Apple pie in Solitaire? The top of Big Daddy at sunrise I know this loneliness and excitement that you will never forget and cannot capture
This is my area, I have been working in the south of Namibia for 12 years, you had fun visit Namibia 🇳🇦
Awesome trip and great video
I've toured Namibia many times before but still love to watch videos about it!
Mein comment ist verschwinden . Tolle Fahrten. Ich bin auch eine wilde TANTE aber. Wohnte in SÜDWEST als Kind und kenn noch das Südwester Lied.
What a great trip, fantastic country - a place where you can really feel free and at peace.
Yeah! The type of freedom we can soak up to keep us going for so so long... :)
Beautiful country
Lovely trip, we used some of your tips for our trip to Namibia in December. However, I want to caution some of the people watching this video at 17:29, the guy who says his vehicle had fuel leakage, he is a total scam, in December 2022 we met him on the same road, same spot, with same story. People be careful do not give this man a cent.
💙
I’m glad I just gave them some cookies then 😆hahah, how good to know this for sure-thanks! There was a fishy story there for sure
"This is about as alone as one can get", as a ghost closes the car door behind you.
Thank you for showing our beautiful country Namibia in how it should be seen & experienced. Next time call on us at Hentiesbay and we'll (wife & I) will take you on an off-road trip to experience Damaraland. You can just ask for Mr. John when you get to Hentiesbay on your next trip. Just love your energy. Rgds John
I'd love that! See you in the future 🚙☀️
It's nearly 40 years since I visited Namibia and I had the same wide-eyed wonder as you. Despite all the amazing places I've been to since it's still one of my favourites.
Thank you for your video, this country looks so beautiful and quiet. I'm going to do a roadtrip there next month, I can't wait 🤩
Next time you're here and want to visit traditional sites I'm the guy 👍🏽
Beautiful on so many levels.
Incredible brave girl really enjoying your episode cant wait for the next one safe journey 🌈

O'h my gosh i love every bit of this video
You’re really brave
Western societies love the desert ... and we Arabs love trees and the picturesque nature ... Every people loves something that does not exist with them😄
😀 You are right! I like that.
Being intrigued by what is unfamiliar is inherent to human progress, after all.
Two Years later, RUclips recommends this video again. And I am watching it. Hey, we may not be many subscribers but we love watching your content
Lucky you, fearlelss you.I do enjoy traveling solo, but then i do worry of being isolated. The views you had there are priceless, i appreciate you sharing this with us,new friend here and looking forward to your future adventures.

Amazing girl. I go to Namibia every year for the last ten years.
I'm namibian and I'm subscribing right away
Your car and its tyres are awesome to run without problems in that hot weather and stoney roads and desert
I love this car. And it has 350000 km now.
Beautiful playlist. Beautiful vlog.. and you are pretty too👌👌
This was really lovely to watch
Really cool! I go in October again! 🙌🏻
Brave young lady you are a wonderful example to humanity.
Awsome girl! I had a business in Swakopmund in the early 80's. Travelled the road from Capetown to Swakop about 7 times
Seven awesome journeys 😍

I grew up in Namibia and some areas is only sand but certain places is beautiful and a sight to see, glad you had the opportunity to travel around
I think love the sand the most 🙂

Thank you from Alaska
BRIIIILIANT I absolutely smaak your video - keep them coming
Most enjoyable, thank you.
God bless,
Dave
You did and saw so much in just 10 days!!! WOW!!! A number of people recon Etosha is not necessarily worth the cost, since you don't see many animals; mostly just plains! But your experience seems to have been quite different though. NICE!
You are so right 😊🙏🏼Days like these make me realise that there is enough time for everything in life! And with regards to Etosha: I think that there are more diverse and interesting parks in Africa. It was also the most expensive camping spot I visited whilst not having the best facilities. The Etosha roads are not fun - to say the least - and there are very few of them. This makes it a bit (or a lot) less exploratory and the car is in for some loose bolts. It’s dry and dusty too, meaning if animals are away from the roads and waterholes you won’t see them. I still enjoyed the experience and had many wonderful sightings!! Great for a little stop but for satisfying the full safari and adventure hunger, I would probably pick another destination.
Mistake people most do is to compare a country to another or a place to another.Eg if someone used to Serengeti or Masai Mara he or she expects to have the same experience with Etosha, it can't be there is huge difference. So come prepared and we'll informed that places always will be different. In that nutshell that it's how things are.
Hey Girl you are my hero. So cool. Thanks you for sharing
😊✨
That was awesome... Well done...
Thanks for sharing.
I intend to do an 8 days solo bike packing.
Your video is very helpful to my planning. 🙏
You are LIVING girl! Maximum enjoy. 💥🤙🏻
I enjoyed watching this. Power to you for forging the road on your own and with being so quiet and all. 💪🏼. Hope you do Botswana next. Another amazingly Vast and beautiful place. But I recommend a roof top tent.
Yes, Botswana is definitely the next one on the list!! I've camped on a square boat before - on the Okavango. But I didn't make it to the actual Delta, so I have to go back big time 😁 It might take a while but I can't wait for that one !! The schoobi with a roof top tent would do justice to my idea of world conquest 😏
Beautiful video
Nambs looks like Joshua tree,we live in a beautiful country
Beautiful 😍, Land of the brave. You should come to Kavango River next time...
Great Vid'.... my wife and I did almost exactly the same trip in 2017 - great memories - thanks !
Our favourite place was Spitzkoppe - such beauty at sunset.
:)
Magical place
Awesome.
Go girl . Keep moving and enjoy .
always 💪🏼
wow, quite a trip to do on your own, but then time is your own. Great car to do it in too, although i will do it in my 80 series. Could hear a bit of an accent in there, obviously German hey..lol. Must be 18 years ago, i was in those places, be good to do a trip there again. thanks for the memories:-)
It's always just a decision away, after all. 80 series sounds awesome! I hope you'll go again soon :-)
a Wild girl... love your travels when needing a plus 1, I'm available...just say when I'm there
Be there in May. South from Tiras mountains close to Aus to North in two weeks. Hoping to reach Kunene before turning back and down southwest side through Puros and then coastline back to Swakop. Maybe see you out there.
What an awesome video. Definately subscribed. Thank you, keep it real 👍
Love your sense of adventure :) You rock !! Been doing the same for a long time :)
Love that 💪🏼❤
@@storypioneer Are you planning anytime in future similar around Namibia?
@@eugeneaylward6657 I would love to and I will! There's sooo much more to discover in Namibia. It's a place that touches the best parts of every traveler's soul. Unfortunately, I am in Europe at the moment :(
I'd be in Namib in November...
My being a proud Namibian moment.😏😏❤
every second of every day you can be proud 🇳🇦❤️
@@storypioneer Amen to that!!
Following your route you landed in Windhoek then travelled down to Fish River canyon going north again through a central national park and into Swakopmund before travelling north to Etosha pan before arriving back in Windhoek capital where you started. Next thing I know is your back driving in South Africa. I guess you didn't want to bother us all with the details of flying out of Windhoek and its city life to be back in the open driving in South Africa. Stay clear and stay free of those big cities in SA that look so unbelievably huge on Google Street maps.
@@phillipkiwi2599 I started in Johannesburg, in South Africa. It's in the description :) I didn't fly but drove. I only started filming after crossing the Namibian border though.
Fish river Canyon was the first stop and then I drove clockwise. Windhoek happened at the end and then I drove all the way back down to Nakop border control and SA, and then to Uppington 😊😊
@@storypioneer thank you for your clarification and especially the journey which carried me all the way too. It was wonderful
Beautiful place and you as well
Salutes to your courage mam. Never seen such a nicely presented video. Awesome wilderness.
Just enjoying this todsy in Cameroon…. Please visit Cameroon there is a lot for you to enjoy and view
Nature seems so quits ... But actually its saying so much ... Its all about connecting with the nature ... I can understand your love towards the wild more than to the human civilization ... And yes your taste to the music is so good ... I also love the same but sometimes dont know where to get it 😜 ... Blessings and love to you for your future trips
I love this. I know the music issue :D I always make playlists relating to the people I meet. Thank you :)
This shows u meet beautiful people around ... Becuz your music in vedios is so soothing nd lovely ... Nd yes its also a fact ... when Beauty lies in the person's eyes the whole world seems beautiful ... Which is actually beautiful ...
Its nice to see you and the beauty around through your vedios ...😊😊😊
@@storypioneer your most welcome and thank you also for so beautiful shots with your happy Beautiful face 😊 ... Got so much Positive vibes 😊
you're not really alone it seems 11:13 hahaha
Great video. I would have cried with the baby seals too. So sad
It's devastating. And whilst some deaths are normal, Namibia has seen high numbers of unusual pup deaths last year. I have tried to understand it but there's hardly any info or good research.
The articles say it might be due to food shortages that the mother's face, or disease. The mother's abort the foetuses or abandon the new pups. Whatever the reason is, the suffering, screams and scale of the problem was unbearable to witness. There are thousands, as far as you can see. They are all searching desperately or taking their last breaths.
I hope that more data is being collected and that the problem will be addressed.
I never forget climbing up a huge sand dune and coming to the top there was a pair of shoes nothing more no signe of anything far and wide.
Best feeling in the world 😍
EXELLENT idea sweety, WELL DONE, totally enjoyable!
Beautiful video.
Wonderfull film watching from india.👍👍
Viewing from Hobart Tas. Loved the rawness. Completely enthralled by your vlog. Much love and wishing all the best in your travels.

That's a great idea! Thank you 🌎😏

Das ist super toll! Mein Deutscher Vater was manager Barclays Bank in Swakopmund.
