      @@OlekRahmel Technically, yes, though there are some that point out how being apart for so long and developing differently still has West and East Berlin/Germany divided psychosocially. Germany modernized the East quite a bit, but there are still some problems. You can look up "Berlin from space" and see that the different halves of the city use different-colored lights; infrastructure evolved differently. While capitalism transformed the East, it is a learned skill by the older parts of the population and they aren't quite as good at it as the established westerners. This phenomenon is referred to as "The Wall in the Mind"

    Happy (mostly) memories. As a young 24 year old, I lived in Leipzig for a month in August 1988 to study German and crossed the border many times at Freidrichstrasse and Checkpoint Charlie. One visit back to Leipzig in late 1988 was nearly a disaster. I missed my train back to East Berllin and arrived in the city around @ in the morning. I was terrified as the border closed at midnight and I was travelling illegally on a tourist day visa that limits travel to Berlin only. I had visions of being arrested and locked up for life....I arrived at Friedrichstrasse crossing but it was shut and the city deserted. Stupidly I managed to open the big metal gates into the transit area under the bridge despite the warnings and walked into the crossing area to the astonishment of a young border guard who nearly shot me. I shouted 'Auslander' and waved my British passport at him. Thankfully all ended well but it aged me about 10 years...

      His dressers should’ve let his coat out a little before the trip to make it a little less obvious. After surviving the assassination attempt, he was strongly urged to wear body armor at every public appearance. On some occasions, he refused due to its weight, bulk and the heat it produced. For maximum protection, soft body armor in the early ‘80s was very thick. I’m sure he was wearing the equivalent of Level III or IV-A which was at least twice as thick as similar protection is today.

      inga robinson,
      guten morgen, i understand how brainwashed you were, and probably still is, just by another side now; USSR was building a communistic society, it was ruled by communist party, but it's political and economic system was called socialism; the same applied to Eastern Germany; communism is a utopian society which is probably impossible to build considering human nature; now if you are still living in Germany you still in a socialistic society, but more democratic one; by the way, the irony is that foundation of communism and national socialism came from Germany, so you guys experienced both extremes,
      auf wiedersehen

    • @isrberlinerin4063
      @isrberlinerin4063 6 лет назад +12

      Arthur Donn't , it seems to me you need a lesson in history before you call me brainwashed i really do not appreciate that. I never believed in Marxist socialism - communism and just because Hitler called it then national socialism does not mean it came from Germany and certainly not the foundation of communism that is a myth . The reason why it is now called democratic socialism it is easier for people to accept , because they think they get more free stuff at least the younger generation believes this lie in America . No i do not live in Germany anymore !

    • @arthurdont1478
      @arthurdont1478 6 лет назад +4

      inga robinson ,
      i apologies for the term "brainwashed";
      according to Stanford: Communism was an economic-political philosophy founded by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels in the second half of the 19th century. Marx and Engels met in 1844, and discovered that they had similar principles. In 1848 they wrote and published "The Communist Manifesto.";
      according to Britannica: Nazism had peculiarly German roots. It can be partly traced to the Prussian tradition as developed under Frederick William I (1688-1740), Frederick the Great (1712-68), and Otto von Bismarck (1815-98), which regarded the militant spirit and the discipline of the Prussian army as the model for all individual and civic life.
