    I still own this deck - I purchased it in black with the wood side panels (awesome looking) when I was stationed at Clark Air Base in the Philippines and I bought it at the Navy Exchange at Subic Bay - it went for a princely sum back them for a lowly sergeant. Talk about great memories every time I look at it! Man, I absolutely love this unit as I recorded my 3 hour long disco mixes, jazz compilations, rock anthems, etc. and enjoyed playing them back over the years. I went all-in on this reel-to-reel as I wound up purchasing (and still have) the plastic cover that look like Mickey Mouse ears, the remote control, 10 Maxell 10" tapes and around 20 or so of the 7" tapes(mostly Maxell) - 1/2 of them of the EE type, which I never unsealed. It was a small fortune back then, especially when you adjust for inflation at 2024 dollars. Sadly, I no longer use it though as it has sat on a shelf covered with a plastic bag for several years, but man, what memories! It's just an absolute beast of a deck and a truly fantastic machine - mine is in mint condition as I used it sparingly and I'm now cleaning it up and servicing it to put it on the market. I'll be sad to see it go though as there are some truly wonderful memories attached to it. It's just a truly remarkable deck.

    I had one when I was in the service. It also had a dust cover and remote control. The playback is like no other and sound reproduction is unequivocal with an amazing amount of headroom. No muddy sound, whatever you put in is what you get out.
    I miss it and would love to find another. I had a 646 for a while, still a great machine but, no comparison with the 747.
    All I can say about your machine is... "Damn you." lol. ;)

    Beautiful looking and sounding deck. I have my own collection but if I had the spare money I'd love to add a deck like this to my collection of TEAC/TASCAM, Pioneer, and Technics decks. I've recently sold my Akai 1731-D, two Studer 810's and a Studer 807 playback deck. The Studer decks were meant to be used in a heavy usage pro-studio situation so I sold them so that they could be recapped and returned to professional use. The Akai went to a fellow who needed a small deck to playback his personal collection of reel tapes.

    Mine has a 2sec delay everytime I press 'play' on either direction. This one has almost zero delay. Amazing !

    Just discovered your channel a few days ago and subscribed - what a delight to see these decks in action. Almost ready to take the plunge in the world of R2R; I've come upon a Teac X-300 that has NEVER been played - still wrapped in plastic and in the box, so in that sense it's "brand new." What's your take on those decks? And keep showing off those decks - they're fantastic!

    • @marcusdolby1
      @marcusdolby1  4 года назад +1

      Teac X-300s are great decks. Just be aware that decks that sit for a long time unused tend to need servicing. Belts dry out and pots get dirty from not being exercised. I came across a Teac X-1000r that had been sitting in its box unopened, it was beautiful but needed a lot of work to be used. The main drive belt turned to goo and several pots were literally stuck. Plus the grease dried up so the capstan was stuck solid.... took a lot to get that deck working. Like a human body if they sit for 35 years they tend to wither.

      @@marcusdolby1 So I'm looking at several decks, all of which I believe you've demo'ed on your channel. All have been recently serviced, which is my #1 concern going into a R2R purchase. Looking at a Teac A-2300SX, Pioneer R-707, Akai 4000D, or Akai GX-280D. All around the same dollar-wise, and all in really good shape. Any suggestions? Any of those stand out above the rest? Thanks in advance!

    Greetings Marcus, Great video and i love the 747...Just a comparison question for you in your opinion....Which deck has the best sound quality to you--the Akai 747 or the Teac X-1000R....Considering purchasing the Akai 747....

    • @marcusdolby1
      @marcusdolby1  4 года назад +2

      leod09613 The Teac records much better in my humble opinion. But honestly I think the Revox B77 MKII is the best home audiophile reel to reel reel ever made.

      gwadaflat I am partial to the Revox B77 MKII. I just think they sound amazing as a recording deck, really nothing quite like a Revox.
