Akai 747 reel to reel--hammer fix!

- I got my my vintage Akai GX-747 reel to reel for free off Craigslist, but it is running weird.
I carefully use a rubber mallet to whack it so you guys can see what is going on with it.
The left side small drive belt is missing, the right side is ok- and I know you can buy the drive belt kit. Will that fix it? I doubt it.
What's wrong with this thing, you guys got any ideas?

Can someone please help me. I have looked all throughout the service manual and cannot find the rubber mallet procedure found in this video. Will a ball pein hammer work just as well? I need to be sure before I start banging on it because I wound't want to use the wrong hammer and cause any more harm to this fine piece of engineering.
If you still have it and want to use it: FIRST thing is to replace all belts, then see what happens. Then, there obviously is a bad contact somewhere in the power supply part of the tape counter or in the tape counter itself. Dismantle the machine so you have access to the counter, then switch it on and carefully wiggle all components of it just a tiny bit. If there's a bad solder joint on the counter, you will find it this way. Nothing? Open the machine and locate the power supply. Especially transistors, with or without heat sink, should be wiggled a bit to locate bad solder joints at the pins of them. In this (linear!) power supply, they get warm, and may eventually destroy their solder joints. The banging with a hammer was useful to this extent, that it highlighted a bad contact. Now put away that hammer, and take out the soldering iron and screwdriver! I own one of these machines: if OK, they are GREAT!!
I have a very nice DBX 747 that I bought brand new. It was the last one available in the UK after they stopped production and I bought it in Croydon UK. I still have original packaging, documentation, and receipt. The original cost a touch under £800.00 but I wouldn't let it go for under £8000.00 and even then I'm not sure I'd let it go unless it was a really good home.
Nothing is wrong with Akai..747... It's in your head....that needs to be fixed...use a 20 lb sledge hammer on head and see ...it will work like magic....
Hi Ken, I am from Honolulu too. Do you still have this reel? Thanks.
Wow!!!! Good video on trying to fix expensive equipment with a hammer!!!. You got my like MATE!!
10 years later and it still makes me nauseous watching someone take a hammer to something as rare and valuable as an Akai GX-747!!! 😢😭😭😭
Great find

This Akai is gathering dust under my house and I will probably sell it. I had dreams of making a 5 foot rack in the living room with older analog music technology with this at the crowning top-- but wife wants no clutter.
Aloha, Ken
stil have it ?
You'd be surprised at the problems worn belts can cause, especially on a unit where the belts are over 30 years old and are likely stretched out of spec.
There may be other problems, too. Somebody mentioned problematic relays. Other problems could be out of spec capacitors.
Basically, this unit will never perform reliably and to its fullest potential without a comprehensive restoration.
Since you were given this unit for free, the money saved will easily pay for the services of a reputable and experienced technician.
Whacking it with a mallet will not stop the problem from getting any worse and can cause its own set of issues on top of what's already there.
Hell, if you don't plan on fixing it, you could sell it for parts and still collect a *very* nice profit.
This machine has no belts. It's all direct drive.
@@ComradNoFucksGivin. What do you know, checking out the service manual and you're right while I stand corrected.
While I would have expected the reel drives to be direct, I thought the capstan would be belt drive. It isn't; according to service literature, it's direct drive on this model.
Thanks.
@@ComradNoFucksGivin. - this is false. The machine has 3 belts: one on each tensioner (which must be replaced) and one on the digital counter (which is usually fine).
@@EnochLight No I have an Akai GX 635 and the tensioners are directly connected to the motors which is pretty common. However, these machines also have direct capstan drive. Which is not common.
Still have it for sale. Can pick up in Honolulu. Thanks.
I would buy it from you for a good reasonable price. I am. come to Honolulu in September. let know if you still have it somewhere in the house.
Hammertime! Have you got it to work yet? Cheers, G.
This is obviously awesome :D :D Hope to fix my phone like that. Thnks.

Here in Germany you have to pay at least 2000€ for a broken one. Damn.
you have a few loose solder connections, your machine was exposed to some moisture, not that surprising since you live in hawaii, but i would take it apart and look for coroded solder points, I can help if you like.
Try the hammer in your left hand
I got an idea Kent, Pay an engineer to fix the fekkin thing.
hahaha will it blend!!!

какие же вы дубовые американцы,правильно пишут в инструкции для микроволновки что девайс не подходит для сушки животных🤔
Какой же ты дубовый))
First, through the hammer away and don't ever hit it again. These recorders are full of relays that will stick with age, would be my first guess. Second, you are going to have to open it up to find an intermittent problem. I would get an expert to fix this unit because it is one of the finest reel to reel tape decks Akai made in the 70s. Or, sell it to me really cheap and save yourself a bundle of cash. Just kidding. Good luck. geo
I think the key to the rubber mallet is hitting it just right. lol
