So... this isn't really horror. Just a drama about PTSD following an abusive relationship. And that's fine, but the horror elements seem shoehorned into what could have otherwise been a more enlightened narrative.
I feel it's a metaphor for the relationship: during the flashback you can hear her playfully laughing and protesting, before getting much more seriously distressed. It's the same thing as the red flags about the relationship- something that at first seems annoying but tolerable before it grows into something far darker.
