Today a professional bushcraft person can reach high volumes of people around the world without even leaving home and take that knowledge with them into the bush. Almost everyone has cut themselves if they work with knives long enough, every time AFTER they cut themselves they say "I should have been doing it like this..." Not because they didn't know how to be safe just because they figured they knew what they were doing and after all "i've done it before and it was fine".
I absolutely love my Mora Companion. I got it years ago and have bought other knives since, but I always go back to my Mora. I think the reason is that with my more expensive knives, I don't want to damage them or even scratch them so I don't push their limits. I can get a Mora pretty cheap if it ever broke. I've abused it and done things that I wouldn't expect a knife to stand up to, and it is still in awesome shape. I do maintain it so I still have my original one.

Hi Dave, great video. All my Scouts and most especially Cubs can't wait for 'knife school' at each camp to earn their 'knife licence'. The way I teach knife safety is very similar. There are a few things I thought about watching your video which others might find useful: 1) Sheath knife v. Pocketknife - one of our scout leaders strongly prefers sheath knifes, especially for younger Cubs for the simple reason you can see if a Cub is carrying a sheath knife, but not so easily with a pocket knife. His belief is that knives should only be used in the campsite, and when going to do other activities (for example the zip line) the knives should be left in the tent. Not appropriate for the Pathfinder School perhaps, but has some merit for younger Cubs (who are tempted to 'fiddle' with their knives when bored). Also, opening and closing a pocket knife is very difficult for an 8 year old, and they are very likely to cut themselves closing the blade. 2) Size of pocketknife - in the past I've had mothers purchase 1.5 inch keychain style knives for their Cubs thinking they were smaller and therefore safer. In the hundreds of Cubs I've taught, I've only had three cuts, and two were on these tiny knives - they are simply too small and once little hands get nervous and sweaty they slip onto the blade. A larger knife (to a point) is safer. 3) Working in front of the triangle of death - as you described, this is safe, however I instruct my Cubs only to carve to the side only simply because youth tire quickly, and so to compensate will always 'choke up' and move the knife and carving piece inside the triangle eventually. This leads to the most dangerous situation because they are tired, probably trying to take off too much material, and not in control. 4) Which part of the blade to use - you demonstrated this, but didn't mention it. There is a tendency with beginners and youth to use the half of the blade closest to the tip, but this very easily leads to lack of control, and insufficient strength. This lesson needs the most reminding, as no-one picks up on it immediately, but I teach that they should only use the first inch of their blade. 5) The whittling tree - I started this when one boy cut himself very badly when walking and carving at the same time (told not to, but that's what kids do). At each camp I choose a tree about 50 feet outside where the tents are, and in plain view of my tarp/mess tent/cooking area, and say that all carving is to be done sitting on the ground under this tree. Any standing, or knives seen in use away from this tree get taken away immediately. Most kids cut themselves when 'playing' with knives, and I've found the 'whittling tree' more than anything else makes for safe knife use around camp. All the best, and happy new year, Nate
Here in Norway we use Mora knives in the kindergarden and in the school,you know when we have sløyd classes. Its a knife for when we are at work. in the forrest we use helle and different scandinavian knifes ,often hand made knifes.Lots of bladesmithts in Norway and knifemakers. It has allways been so.I am one of them.
You have demonstrated some of these techniques before but it is nice to see a specific guide. Some accidents with knives can happen when you put the knife down for a moment and then go to retrieve it. Wearing proper clothing and footwear in case you drop your knife, although using the demonstrated techniques should keep this from happening it always pays to be safe. The importance of good practice of these techniques will go a long way toward establishing mentally the prevention of making a mistake when you feel the need to be in a hurry. Yes you should never be in a hurry but sometimes in life you can feel a need to rush through a job and that's when accidents will happen. Best practices will help with this.

Hi Dave. Your vids are the most useful ive found. Just one point to mention. Wouldnt blade sharpness be also a point worth mentioning regarding knife safety.
Same options for carving down sticks, putting end of wood into other wood, and use knife down and towards safe wood ending. Otherwise, stab knife vertically into wood, and pull horizontal wood sticks across knife edge.
I teach my grandkids to use knives safely and the all start out with the mora 511 then the go up to the mora companion. And I also show them this video.
Great common sense video for youngsters, inexperienced and so called accident prone people. ( accident prone doesn't exist in my opinion but stupid does ).

I like this, very usefull, even at my age. Can you do one on axe safety? Especially when splitting wood.
