I fell in love with this list after the very first game, even more so on the third. This is fantastic and you should feel great for birthing this monstrosity.
Looking back to get ideas for Artisan decks, but dang, seeing a companion you can cast from sideboard with Uro in the graveyard and Teferi, Time Raveler on the battlefield really hit me in the anti-nostalgia
0:34 Deck Tech 3:40 First Match (vs. Orzhov Yorion Discard) 9:37 Second Match (Gruul Aggro) 21:46 Third Match (vs. Bant Yorion) 30:47 Fourth Match (vs. Lurrus Mono White Weenie) 37:29 Fifth Match (vs. Mono Red)
I've made a escape protocol deck with gravedigger to get back cycling creatures (it's way cheaper then the ones that get sorceries and instants back) it's pretty fun, i think seth would like that kind of deck a lot too, since it's basically a astral slide deck It does have a soft lock combo that's a bit hard to get online, with the cycler that makes tokens you can blink plaguecrafter, which can get rid of creatures and planeswalkers, and can be done instant speed on opponent's upkeep. With graveyard shenanigans or instant speed stuff they can get out of it, but the deal with the deck ois really extracting value off of elite guardmages, lamias with gravediggers to fetch stuff and blink garys eventually
I think that one with tilling treefolk would be better alongside some cycling lands, since that would allow for a truly hard lock, instead of just generating value. It also has the upside of choosing to not find a land with ash barrens if you need to.
20:22 I feel like either countering Barrier Breach by cycling Wilt or holding on to the Wilt would have been better plays. Having two Escape Protocol in play is not terrible, because you can use one of the triggers for card draw. Most removal in Grull costs 2 mana, and they didn't play a lot cheap creatures up until that point so I feel like "playing around" removal at that point wouldn't be a bad idea.
For the first time, in a very long time, I want to play paper standard. Its been a long time since I saw a standard deck that I thought may make an opponent holler expletives at me. Love it!
My guess is that it's worse as it loses consistancy due to the win-more-Yorion. 20 more cards (half of them lands) means so many more wrong cards at the wrong moment. And what's a turn 5 Yorion worth when you don't find your sideboarded answers before your opponent goes of by turn 4?
I think this list may actually be quite competitive, it has a very strong strategy and its very good at doing it PLZ show us an improved non budget list so we can see this marvel of a deck reach its full potential!. I was very delightened by this video and i must say this really shows your level of deck building skills, good job! :D
This deck is great, whenever I see you post cycling decks it gets the brewing part of my brain going. This deck definitely wants a third color, I don't know which one. I wonder if there is a pioneer version that could function.
This is right along the lines of some of my favorite decks that I've been messing around with for the past six months (obviously not using escape protocol until recently, but the idea of reusing enter the battlefield effects and working up to a hard lock, even specifically working up to a hard lock using Scholar of the Ages as a combo piece). I absolutely agree that it needs a third color to really shine. I would probably lean toward black because the black removal works better with Scholar of the Ages, white removal like Deputy of Detention isn't truly reusable except against tokens, while Heartless Act is a gift that keeps on giving. I will admit that I would even be tempted to go for a four color pile, picking up both white and black, partly because I think Mythos of Nethroi is incredible if you can pay Abzan for it, partly because of the mix of answers you get to aggro from that, shoring up one of the worst matchups. However, even though I think the mana in Standard is good enough now to support a four color deck (I've been playing some four color decks and it's really not so bad right now), I don't think we're quite happy with four of Frilled Mystic in a four color deck. With Triomes and Fabled Passage we can get all four colors going, but I'm not so sure about getting GGUU when we really need it.
I setup a lock in bant with T3feri, Rule of Law and Portal of Sanctuary. It can optionally be put in place with Flood of Tears. A nice bonus is that you bounce Uro before it sacrifices with full control in Arena
I tried a changed version of the deck, and I agree... In the right meta (non-aggro) there's a good chance this is a legitimate competitive deck. I think a few one-mana cyclers could be added for a bit more efficiency. I also think at least one Voracious Greatshark would work well as a fifth Frilled replacement. The only thing I worry about this deck are games where the 4 Escape Protocols are in the bottom half of the deck, and suddenly the deck looks quite worse. But dang is it powerful once you got the "engine" working...
This deck looks so good! It's strange, since I also made a Simic Blink deck for a Casual format that's close to Pioneer. Frilled Mystic, Mnemonic Wall, Displace is the way I'm going, but I also get to run Coiling Oracle and Omenspeaker, as well as Faerie Imposter, and Sage's Row Denizen to actually win.
im a simple man. i hear infinite counter spell deck and i click. seriously though i've been dying for a control deck with counterspells. i need more of these
mate you need to brush up on flicker, if you flicker a blocker before dmg is delt it removes the defending creature from combat and prevents dmg so long as the attacking creature does not have trample. So you can always declare a blocker and cycle trigger Escape Protocol to keep your creatures on the battlefield and negate the dmg Doing so comes with risk but it seems like in the games you lost you could definantly have prevented a decent amount of dmg
While I can't say I'm a fan of the deck itself (prison-style builds are just the opposite of fun to me), I gotta say it's creative and presented well. I also liked that you didn't say a word about those Thornwood Falls that would be Breeding Pools in a non-budget build. I'm very happy you beat that salty mono-red player, this is a perfect example of why I play MTGA with emotes disabled. It's WAY too hard to see intentions with just one word emotes. You and I think that mono-red player was salty but they might just have really been admiring the deck. We will never really know. Also, when you lost to Hushbringer, it made me a little bit happy, since abusing ETB effects is one of the cheesiest things about Magic these days, and I have a deck with 4 maindeck Hushbringer that I play in Bo1. The opponent's build that game is super intriguing, you should play that one soon for Budget Magic! Auras decks always have a ton of interesting synergies and interplays.
I love the shakeups you bring to the Standard meta, Seth! Although I have to admit, the amount of repetition and homogeneous net-decks in the current Standard (as we saw in this video) are what is making me want to take a break until rotation. This feels like the least fun Standard has been since Kaladesh.
No graveyard hate even in the sideboard feels pretty yucky. Suprised you're not going with atleast a soulguide lantern or two since you can escape protocol them as well. no teferi or uro in the bant version seems a little wack as well.
In defense of those who scoop the whole match after round one. I do this too. Free time is too precious to waste on matches that go on.. and on.. an oooon.
Mtga is nothing but companion decks now I just auto concede in play mode till I play against another non companion deck. I'm glad I can still enjoy watching others play though.

Toss in massive power creep which has expanded the gap between decent cards and great cards and budget Magic has been really bad for a really long time. No one ever said Magic was cheap, but WotC has unintentionally (?) made even FNM pretty much unplayable for less than $150 so you can have a set of shocklands in your deck. Finally, watching a deck without an efficient Companion feels really weird. Little things like the need to mulligan a hand with 5 lands has you just feeling like you're playing by different rules than your opponent.
Yeah I don’t blame round one opponent for scooping the match. I would have too. I came to play magic. Not sit there while someone who doesn’t want to play shots on my chest.

but really, can we get a board wipe in here? maybe play a bant or sultai variant with wipes? i’d love to see a non-budget version of this deck it’s veryyy spicy
Yeah, it's hard (maybe impossible) to make three color mana work on a budget in our current format, but non-budget I think Bant or Sultai is a good plan (personally I'm on the Bant plan).
I guess I'll never be heard: I've been skipping the desk techs ever since the video is spoiled multiple times during the techs. I miss watching them, and I would watch them again if the video is not spoiled.
Stonehorn would be perfect. We do have the three-drop white creatures that makes attacking cost two more the next turn, but I'm not sure if that's strong enough of a lock (and we'd need to be non-budget to make the mana work anyway).
@@MidgarMerc It can make sense sometimes, but 95% of times it's obnoxious. I've muted emotes long ago and I could never go back to the way it was. It's blissfully peaceful now.
