- Can Ikoria's Zirda, the Dawnwaker create a new Magic: the Gathering combo deck that makes infinite mana and infinity big creatures as soon as turn three in MTG Modern?

Something that came up but I don’t know if Seth realised - Two leylines and a mana dork also goes infinite with mantle. The creature taps for 3, untaps for 3 to get +2/+2. Just a note because I saw at about 15:50 Seth doesn’t seem to realise he doesn’t even need to cast Zirda to win.
Came in here to say as much
I just got to that point and was going to make this comment... luckily yours was on the top of the list. Well said.
Good call :)
@@iceburnhex Saaaame
The Cats deck is so good it makes Seth win matches in a completely different video!
Ya know I am finally getting used to Seth mixing up the names but now seeing him switch back and forth between Zirda and Zidra a million times this video really got to me
ya I don't know how this guy makes a living as a content creator and he can't even say the name of the fucking cards right
axioms22 well i mean clearly some of it is trolling and he does it to generate clicks and comments but he’s also explained the reasons he accidentally does it in the past, it’s just the switching back and forth that i don’t get
@@axioms22 I don't know how this guy watches MTG Goldfish without knowing Seth (probably better known as SaffronOlive*) does the name mispronunciations on purpose as an on going meme... LMFAO
axioms22 says the guy watching the video 😂
his inability to get anywhere near kaheera was almost as bad IMO
I think the real travesty of Companions is not that they are dominating every format, but that they cause Seth to give the Companions fifteen different names per creature.
I wish that MTGO had a system in place that if you've made a loop that it'll be easier to repeat, something like you press a button to record an action then you press it agian to repeat it.
That is absolut necessary
Funny thing, that XMage can do that, while the pay-program cannot do it...
Yeah, that would be nice.
"4 out of 53.. thats roughly 25%.
"
This explains many hands that Seth keeps....
I think he was talking about getting one or more in the top three. (It's actually ~21%.) 3/3 is ~0.017%.
This was a lot of fun to watch. This deck is right up my alley
Sweet deck and video as always! One thing I did notice during match 1: you didn't actually need Zirda to win when you had the two Leylines in play. With 2x Leyline of Abundance in play, mana dorks tap for three mana. Umbral Mantle costs 3 to untap the creature, so you can make all your non-summoning-sick mana dorks infinitely large even without Zirda in play. Doesn't produce infinite mana, but you don't need that if you have more arbitrarily large creatures than your opponent has blockers!
Edit: While I'm here, I should probably toss my own thoughts on the spoiler clip into the comment section: please stop doing them! These videos are more fun when the epic moments come up by surprise!
Technically you can still go infinite, but with Zirda out it just takes fewer clicks.
You can win on turn 2
if you get all four leylines a land and a Dork, next turn play a zirda and mantle
Yo that's true, that's absolutely insane
If you have 2 or more leylines you don't even need zirda. Your dork will tap for 3+ and mantle untaps for 3. You don't get infinite mana (unless you have 3 or 4 leylines), but you still get the infinite pump.
It's possible!
*3 leylines, and zirda not needed
ok criticism for the opening preview,
this one was a really good preview! it didnt focus on the gameplay, which would be difficult to establish context, but rather on an absurd moment.
a great opening :)
my feelings during-
-huh?
-hahaha
-thats cool,
-huh, whats going on with the deck?
---
then with the cut to the deck tech it flowed really well.
so this is a great improvement! good job!
Thanks :)
You can tell when Seth gets "pissed" cause he transforms into the fourth member of the three stooges, "Nyck nyuck nyuck nyuck nyuuuuckkk", and it's always when the op plays a very commonly played card that screws with what he's doing. Never change Seth.
This deck needs Llanowar tribe as a backup combo piece.
Ohh, Llanowar Tribe could be fun for sure.
Zirda here, probably better known as Zidra...
"So we have zirda in the companion zone" Sweet Seth said it right!....not even 30 seconds later "So with ZIDRA".... there's the Seth we all know and love!
OMG! I could see this combo in an edh shell with Sisters of the Flame! 😱
Deck Tech: 0:51
Game Play: 6:29
I can totally see a naya build of this deck that's also running thud. "You have blockers? Why would you need that? I'm throwing it at your face."
That does sound fun :)
With the amount of mana dorks you have that produce all colours, you probably don't even need to tweak the land base that much either.
48:22 when your opponent's going off, but have an out in your deck hahaha
(Typed during deck tech) This deck seems awesome.
Gotta say, I think my first non-budget upgrade would be walking ballista, just for more non-combat options, but Elvish archdruid would also work as a back-up combo piece since you're already playing a handful of other elves. bonus anthem, too.
25:36 I feel the pain in Seth's voice. Don't worry buddy, we've all been there
That cycling o-ring from Amonkhet could work as a banishing light substitute.
10/10 preview spoiler clip again. Keep up the great content!
Cats, weddings? What are these johns gonna think of next?
1 of Puurphoros seems like it would be helpful when you go off (with recruiter) to avoid the, "next turn wrath"?
If you want a Banishing Light type effect in the deck, Cast Out is the only option (Since it has cycling).
Spoiler ends 0:34
those annoying spoiler clips suck ass!
it`s a plague with every mtg content creators, saving CGB...it`s kinda lame that every youtuber is doing it...
Day 5 of asking the spoiler to be removed (or changed).
Honestly today was pretty good, like I said yesterday my issue is more that I’m watching the best part of the video 30s in, making the rest of the video less enjoyable for me. Funny moments like this are spoilers I’m okay with.
PS I hope you all are staying safe and healthy
I personally like the intro clips, and think Seth is getting better at them as he gets more practice. I think the same will be true for all the videos eventually.
It's clear you don't like them, but the whole "day X of asking" thing is setting yourself up to be frustrated.
Nah it’s kinda fun. Even if nothing changes, I love the content Seth puts out and I’m just giving feedback. If nothing changes, then maybe eventually I’ll stop. But for now, I dont think it’s hurting anyone
@@FunPheonix Fair enough! I've just seen too many people get themselves unnecessary worked up over things lately. But if you're having fun, that's great!
Kind of curious here, why not go Bant and run Biomancers Familiar and Freed From the Reel? Double redundancy for everything, and it still works with Zidra as a companion!
It's a budget dexk
@@timothygager9277 they're both less than a dollar
Mostly because the lands needed to make a Bant build work would be really tough under the budget.
@@MTGGoldfish But would Bant Panorama for Triomes or Tri lands make it feasible?
The nonbudget version of this deck would be something like:
Companion - Zirda
Main - 60
Non-lands - 39
4 Stoneforge Mystic (duh)
1 Batterskull (duh)
1 Sword of Fire and Ice (great card advantage engine with Birds of Paradise or Giver of Runes)
4 Umbral Mantle (combo piece)
4 Noble Heirarch (sidegrade to Llanowar Elves)
4 Birds of Paradise (combo piece)
4 Leyline of Abundance (combo piece)
4 Devoted Druid (goes off with just Leyline and Umbral Mantle, making infinite mana then it gets infinitely large for the turn)
4 Paradise Druid (hexproof-ish combo piece that can attack)
1 Llanowar Tribe (2 card infinite with Umbral Mantle, might be better as 2nd Ballista but this gets a 1-of fun-of as a CoCo hit)
3 Giver of Runes (protection piece)
1 Walking Ballista (great with all the mana running around, goes off with Zirda, here mostly as a DWR target)
2 Collected Company (raw card advantage)
2 Duskwatcher Recruiter (Great with Zirda without combo-ing, when it combos it lets you kill with Ballista on the spot)
Lands - 21
1 Dryad Arbor (fetchable combo piece and Collected Company hit)
4 Windswept Heath
3 Misty Rainforest (or whatever green fetch you want, but this one is the best for bluffing)
3 Temple Garden
2 Horizon Canopy
1 Gavony Township (REALLY good with Zirda, holy sh*t)
4 Snow-Covered Forest
3 Snow-Covered Plains
This version of the deck doesn't have quite as much ramp, but it gains the additional game plans of making a gigantic Walking Ballista, going off with just Llanowar Tribe and Mantle, fetching Batterskull or Fire and Ice to get there with aggression, and using Gavony Township with Zirda to cheaply make things massive.
In your deck, I'd also throw in a single copy of Paradise Mantle. It'll allow you to combo off with any creature as a backup strategy (Though it is 1 turn slower, looking for a turn 4 infinite).
yo Saff, i have to say, those clips in the intro are becoming a plague with almost every mtg youtuber...
like, all the mtg videos nowadays have those you know? kinda ruins the moment, please stop with it, thank you.
If the mana base was a little more solid, would it be possible to play a singleton or maybe even two copies of Westvale Abby? I feel like it could be a good backup plan
Westvale Abbey does sound interesting. I like it :)
The cool part about this is that once the mantle is on the bird, you can't bolt it dead even in response to activating the mantle, because you can just activate it again, since untapping is the cost of activating it.
One card that works also well with Umbra is Marwyn, the Nurturer. She gets big enough with one untap to make then infinite mana on her own
im curious why you cut the leylines and added more zirdas+duskwatches in the non budget version. the leyline plan seemed extremely resilient.
D&T opponent could have had Settle the Wreckage in from the sideboard, and was waiting to see if they drew into it. But that line depends on you making a mistake, commiting your whole deck to the board and then to combat.
Perhaps they didn't realize you had redundancy in the second Zirda and stacking of Leylines. Perhaps they just wanted to run out your clock if they thought their was a chance their Givers could stall you (which depends on misunderstanding that you could pump literally every creature).
Or perhaps they're one of those never-scoop-until-actual-DoB-even-if-no-top-deck-saves-you folks. :)
Zhur-Taa Druid seems solid for when you don't have a leyline
also another card for Seth to mispronounce - Zidra, Zirda, Zurda, Zhur-Taa XD
I really wanted to play Zhur-Taa, I was worried about the mana though (going three colors is tough on a budget), but maybe all of our Birds of Paradise effects would make it work.
Plague Myr. Yeah, it slows by a turn, but halves or more more the amount of activations needed.
I think the deck should run Avoid Fate. It would protect the combo so much!
No one, absolutely no one:
Seth: "Zidra."
Cast Out is an instant-speed Banishing Light with Cycling. It does cost 4 mana, though...
This man switched from Zidra to Zirda back to Zidra and I kid you not, as I am writing this I heard him say Zirda...
I’d love to see a non budget version of this with stoneforge and other obvious upgrades
Match 2 I think you made a massive mistake not sending at T3feri for fear they would trade your dork for the coatl. That let T3feri activate approximately 72 times give or take.
Yeah, it might have better to go more aggressively at Teferi. We did let is stick around for quite a while.
SFM Package for an alternative win-con?
5:37 Cast Out says hi
Still a fun deck even after the rule changes, it comes to hand for 3 rather than casting.
Where are the Gilded Geese? Dodges W6 and back up life gain seems to good to pass on.
Isn't Stoneforge Mystic just strictly better than Open the armoury here?
Nvm, didn't see "Budget" at first, that also explains the mana-base.
Yeah, without budget concerns you are right about both :)
Board the Weatherlight can find both Zirda and Umbral Mantle, though it's not a guaranteed search like Armory, it help when someone kills Zirda.
I've never had much success with Board the Weatherlight. It's so easy to whiff unless you have a ton of historic cards. If only it hit lands as well I'd play it for sure.
The cat did it beats the engagement excuse
Boreal druid, Arboreal elf , Fyndhorn Elfs?
Seth what set are the plains you are using in this deck from?
Could replace the zirda with something like freed from the real and get infinite mana as well for infinite activations
Did the {3} extra cost for Companions kill this list? :P
Seth, please stop moping about tap lands when playing a budget deck. The majority watching understand it’s a price you pay in a budget manabase. Maybe you forgot what it’s like to not have the resources to afford a shock/fetch manabase, but we are just looking for something fun and occasionally competitive to play in this series. Love your content overall , man, you’re doing a good job keeping people entertained during this crazy time!
Around 28 minutes he specifically points out the case where the budget mana base lost him the game. I still think it's important to point out when untapped lands are relevant
I'll try stop bringing it up. I've mostly thought of it as a teachable moment, but if it is coming across as moping and not fun than it's not worth it :)
MTGGoldfish i can appreciate that. I think the place to do it would be in the wrap up. something ive wondered why you don’t do is talk about upgrades for un-budgeting the deck later in the wrap up. I think a player starting out with a budget deck would love to know a good upgrade path :)
Seth, your hate for Mystic Sanctuary gives me life
That card...
is this deck dead with the companion update?
Turn 2 kill is possible:
T0/T1- Leyline, Leyline, Leyline, Land, Birds
T2- Land, tap birds for 4, mantle, equip mantle, make inf mana with or without casting companion
- Swing for lethal -
21:48 Seth what the actually heck
Lol ;)
No one excepts Zidra to just go infinite
-Said Seth and no one else
Zhur-Taa Druid would also be a good card in here. Much less work to kill the opponent.
I don't have Internet except on my phone right now, so I haven't been able to test this list but I put together a non budget version of this.
maindeck:
4x Umbral Mantle
1x Shadowspear
1x Zirda, the Dawnwaker
4x Birds of Paradise
4x Noble Hierarch
4x Avacyn's Pilgrim
4x Llanowar Elves
4x Elvish Mystic
4x Stoneforge Mystic
4x Walking Ballista
4x Leyline of Abundance
4x Steelshaper's Gift
4x Cavern of Souls
4x Windswept Heath
2x Misty Rainforest
2x Temple Garden
3x Forest
3x Plains
sideboard:
1x Zirda, the Dawnwaker
3x Relic of Progenitus
3x Apostle's Blessing
4x Path to Exile
2x Nature's Claim
2x Qasali Pridemage
Hey Seth! Big fan here. Just want to add that I also don't like the preview clips. I've taken to skipping the first 30-60 seconds. I'm not sure how that affects your viewer stats. But I'd recommend removing them. Just a thought from a loyal viewer.
P. S. Love the deck.
I want a "Birds & the Bees" deck with....birds and bees. XD
Just watched first match, but isn’t Seth ignoring Zirda’s activated ability?
Boggles whole thing is that all the creatures have hexproof. He can't target them with the ability.
Not quite -- the bogles have hexproof, so Seth couldn't have stopped their blocks.
I feel like 1 gavony township would be pretty solid in this deck
Im curious what the list would be with no budget.
www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/budget-magic-zirda-s-mantle-modern Here's the article with nonbudget list toward the bottom 🙂
In game two, against taxes, technically you could have wrathed their board essentially. You have infinite mana with mantle and you can just use the "infinite" mana to pump your team still. It's not a for sure win but they have to block everything and you likely still win.
Also it may have taken 20 minutes of clicking tho lol
Tomer and his abacus... Seth and his calculator
“4/53, you’re looking at 25% ish”
All the dorks!
Did Seth called Zirda Zidra several times?)) That's funny
DOOD ZHUR-DUH zirda ziRda 😂👌🏻
I always thought sideboards were 0 or 15 cards, never in between. Companions changed everything.
Sideboards have been able to be anywhere from 0 to 15 cards for years. Companion changed nothing about that.
Arboral druid?
Why not run Steelshaper's Gift over Open the Armory as it's one mana cheaper?
Budget Magic, remember?
I wouldn’t be surprised if an earlier version ran Gauntlets of Light and used Open as a way to tutor either. Probably just forgot steelshaper’s exists. Or they forgot at first.
@@maxnathe4862 Gauntlets doesn't pump the creature so it's more of a hassle to win with the leyline pump on MTGO at least
Budget. Steelshaper's Gift is up near $10 a copy now :(
Birds has flying
Feel better soon man- hoarse throat
the bird is the fucking word!
street wraith seems pretty deece
Again, just to let you know that the reason I always skip the deck tech is because the rest of the video is spoiled in it. I would watch them again if you stop showing parts of the video to come in them.
Wait a minute, it's seth correctly saying "Bogles", instead of incorrectly saying "Boggles"?
I wonder what it would take for a combo detection software that could spot and then rapidly perform the combo loop. Also why have Crypt in the Sideboard if you're never going to play it?
Magic Online has improved with combos over the past couple of years (allowing you to automate parts of them), but something that allows you to loop through your entire combo would be amazing.
Crypt is mostly for full-on graveyard decks like Dredge or Storm, I don't really like it much against decks that incidentally use the graveyard.
Declaration in stone would be a good replacement to blessed alliance since it's about $1.50
Winds of Abandon is great
Good call. For some reason I was thinking it was more expensive than that thanks to Pioneer. Looks like it has come back down over the past few months.
Yeah, I really love Winds of Abandan. Bad Path and bad Wrath put together makes for a good card.
This deck needs an insta kill. Obviously non-budget is hangarback walker but budget options include (and take many more clicks); Hypervolt grasp, fling, frostwielder, or furystroke giant. The last two are 4 and 5 mana but this deck doest struggle to make mana.
Why is hangarback instakill?
U mean walking ballista???
@@brianokafor9748 yeah lol got off a night shift and wrote the wrong one
Bolas be like: @21:46
Do they keep making companions in future sets? I feel like we are going to get tired of these handful... But they are so bad for the game in my opinion.
Seems unlikely based on what they've said.
Constantly saying zidra is killing me QwQ
666 the number of the beast
MtG players during Kaladesh block: "energy is just a busted mechanic. Complete mistake."
WotC during Ikoria release: "let me sing you the song of my people"
I think this deck could benefit from end-raze forerunner(obviously hoof is better but it’s not budget), it’s tutorable with dusk watch and can end the ga,e even through blockers
It would be a lot faster if you put mantle on a Marwyn.
ZI RRRRRRR DA
R BEFORE D SETH
PLEASE
SPARE ME
WAIT WHY DID YOU JUST CHANGE IT UP AND SAY IT RIGHT
A song about birds, google it.
That control deck is why I would never be interested in playing modern ever again
Pronunciation game strong
Tap, untap, tap, untap, tap, untap, tap, untap....
Oh man... I've never been so angry with WotC... :C
I would make you play out this miserable leyline pump combo every single time for playing this kind of deck. vizier druid combo is bad enough....
