Long time subscriber coming out of the woodwork to chime in on doing away with the match preview prefacing the video. Love your content but the spoilerly preview segment really takes away some of the fun of discovery...
Thanks for the feedback.
Keep chugging along though, your love of jank is really the reason why I'm still playing the game!
Winota and Agent of Treachery is one of the most miserable decks to play against in standard....
nah. the most miserable decks to play against is Jeskai Fire, and Cat oven
One of the most. Not the most. But worse deck to play against is mono red aggro elves
Winota was a total design failure. I hope it's banned.
Yeah, all these decks are cancer and a grind to play against. The play design team is a myth. Play Design is the grixis mythos card.
@@NinthSettler just need ban Agent of Treachery, he is the problem...
Opponent has 1 life. Seth is sitting on the board with 27 power in play. Opponent is digging like crazy trying to find an answer and fails. He taps out and says 'Good game'. He concedes,
Seth: OPPONENT SCOOPS IT UP!?!?!?!?!?!
underrated comment⬆️
I scoop everytime they get agents on turn 4....
Where?
Still hate agent of treachery, this video just makes me hate it more
Agreed. It has all the benefits of being a creature (cheat it, blink it, etc) without the drawback (killing it doesn't get your stuff back).
i'll say this as a critique.
i dont like the previews. i skip them everytime. it either spoils the vid or starts me off without any knowledge as to whats happening not knowing the cards first.
if you want a preview, perhaps just pick the weirdest thing that is unrelated to the deck and focus on it exaggeratedly.
like a super close up of one of the cards done comedically.
I agree 100%! They are almost like a spoiler, they tell you if he pulls off a winning combo in this match or that match, I don't like it. I get why he does it, to show how something works, but cant he just use footage from a different game that wasn't part of the video?
@@Chapterhouse86 magic aids used winona as a joke in similar sounds, so its possible and it provides a stronger start to the video.
I liked it for a little but I also starting to hate it. Cuz when you get to that match it ruins the surprised.
Agreed it’s fucking awful, excuse mah French.
Agreed. I stopped watching after 20 seconds on this one.
Agent of Treachery is not a surprise in any case when playing against Winota. The fact that that crappy card exists is a nightmare, but then Winota comes along and makes it much worse.
I really like that you make the most competetive decks possible for such a low price. Doesn't mean it's not miserable or a proof that shows WotC still hasn't learned the free-spell lesson
Funny reading the article today about how fast mana is so bad in standard with Fires and Wilderness Rec and then this video comes out where Seth gets 3 agents of treachery for free by casting a 4 mana spell. Not criticizing, but this is probably worse to me than the decks mentioned in the article.
Yeah, this deck isn't much more fair that Fires (although it is susceptible to creature removal on Winota).
This deck is a thing of beauty. I was right there with you grinning against the Control matchup in R1!
I seriously dislike how Winota can trigger off of those totally-honest-for-real-we-swear non-human soldiers attacking. Honestly I think I hate that more than getting Agent'd, but only slightly.
stop assuming the species identiy of those soldiers!
@@SilverAlex92 They're probably just three arboreal grazers stacked on top of each other in a human costume.
They are llorywn tokens in the pics, meaning they are elf soldiers.
Soldiers are a generic token. Just because one seems to be human that doesn't mean it is actually a human.
This bothers me about Winota. Such a violation of flavor :[
Usually put these on in the backround while i play but the preview caught me and i ended up sitting here watching the whole thing lol wish i could say its the first time... whoever picks the clips is good at it.
Nice timing! I lost to one of these decks the other day and was just looking for a list yesterday before this video was posted.
Ladies and gentlemen, the nemeses of Standard: Lurrus, Winota, and Gyruda.
Oko would like to know your location.
I feel like lurrus has a natural cap to what it can do, the other two just go off and very rarely stop
You forgot Yorion
Standard seems like the only format where Lurrus isn't currently broken.
@@adeladekoza6558 The fact that the Lurrus deck only gets access to one copy in a deck which really struggles without the companion is probably one of the reasons for this
Seth, please change the very first preview. I don't care the preview as much as you are talking about the deck, but the opening clip kills a good amount of the fun
I'm very much looking forward to this fall. Getting out of quarantine is a nice bonus, but I'm mostly hyped for Agent rotating out of standard
This is why I'm close to giving up on Standard until rotation. Every set is just a new way to cheat more Agent of Treachery triggers.
It does seem like there are a lot of ways to cheat it into play at the moment.
Seth: Hakdos can steal games
Later in games, Seth is shocked that Hakdos stole game
Later? You mean earlier from his perspective right?
Hushbringer seems like it'd be really good in this deck against Gyruda. It's a nonhuman flier for Winota and naturally hoses Gyruda's ETB. I don't even think they can kill it
Though I guess you'd have to board out your Agent of Treacheries lol
Hushbringer is great against Gyruda, but it's also pretty good against our deck :)
I have the jeskai triomes and some temples and shock lands, I’m gonna build this but put in some counters in the sideboard. Love the deck
As an EDH player I underestimated Winota so much during spoiler season but after seeing gameplay with her in Standard and in commander she's awesome. I already brewed up and ordered the cards for an EDH deck and am excited for the cards to come out in paper
I get how it could be annoying to have your stuff stolen by agent of treachery but people need to play this deck to see how it’s mediocre and inconsistent. I played it quite a lot the past few days with a non-budget jeskai version with teferi, lukka, sphinx of foresight, etc . Win rate is only 50 to 60 percent in diamond and mythic ranks. It’s such a hit or miss because you depend so much on Winota and if it gets countered or killed before you attack or if you don’t hit agent of treachery it’s game over. It’s not even close to being competitive compared to jeskai fires and temur reclamation. Not gonna lie tho, it feels so good if you beat control decks with tons of counter spells by stealing their lands.
I think when it comes to budget standard decks it is important to think about rare count because of how many arena players there are. Doesn’t matter for other formats cuz it’s not a matter of wildcards, but considering how much harder it is to make this on arena vs Tour de France, it is worth thinking about
Death by autotapper.
Pretty sure he meant to use the forest and not Leafkin, then died.
In this case it didn't matter. Seth drew Chandra, so his opponent wouldn't have enough blockers even if he tapped correctly.
Ah, a good ol' fashioned make your opponent quit Magic forever deck. I love it. The more brutal of a deck Seth plays, the more I enjoy it. Not sure what that says about me...
Good lord is this combo broken. Talk about miserable to play against, jesus. I feel like Wotc has completely lost the ability to make new sets that don't completely warp every format in magic now every few months. This crap is getting so ridiculous.
Says everyone every set. About anything. Just part of the game big guy. I wish it wasn't but it's okay
Looking at Standard right now, why the hell are there 2 decks designed to cheat multiple creatures out each turn? It's honestly really gross. Gyruda can even just straight up kill you, while turn 4 Winota can just steal multiple things.
@@Krossfyre There are decks that care about what they do (non interactive decks) and decks that care about what their OPP does (interactive decks) and then the rest of the spectrum. Gyruda specifically folds to counter magic easily
it's not broken, not even close. If your deck doesn't play companions in a companion format you are almost trolling. Winota is strong finisher card but nowhere near Yorion or Lukka or Lurrus
Hey seth, is there any merit to possibly cutting your own charming princes against Gyruda to remove a potential hit for the opponent from your deck?
I know its not on curve for Winota, but Heroic Reinforcements is just so powerful in a go wide plan that I think it should have some copies.
20:10 would it not be possible to Heartfire @ opp after attacking, saccing an elemental?
Winota might be fair after Agent of Treachery rotates, but right now if my opponent plays Raise the Alarm I feel like scooping right then.
hardly, just fill the deck with the biggest boros creatures you can
Calling Winnota a sleeper sounds like a bit of a stretch, everyone is perfectly aware that the card is broken... This might be my most hated design from the new set honestly, it's so uninteractive. Personally, it's on the Cat/Oven list of cards I'd be completely fine if you'd never put in a deck ever again on video ^^" The double Agent of Treachery on turn 4 even through disruption is so disgusting I can't even enjoy looking at it when you're the one playing it :/
I like the previews that you do for the videos! Keep em up.
Thanks :)
This deck reminds me of Seth's theory that MTG is a zero-sum game. There is a limited amount of fun to be have. Stealing cards and taking extra turns is the best way to take most of that fun for yourself...
We get all the fun!
Fire Prophecy seems like a good card for decks like this or cheaty Emrakul decks in Modern. If you draw the card that needs to be in your deck, you can cycle it back in.
It's hysterical that Auto Captions is better at translating Mandarin than it is at translating Seth.
"Heart failure would be good" - Seth, 2020
Can someone explain why he didn't steal the original Gyruda at 25:16?
I think that rather than killing Teferi you should start stealing them. The moment you change the control of it, it leaves combat and isn't attacked any longer, and also prevents opponent from casting instants.
YuGiOh: The Gathering
Print broken crap to sell packs
Ban broken crap/print broken counter crap
Repeat
What about Fire Prophecy? Its good if you draw Agent.
Hey, any way Fire Prophecy makes sense? Perhaps paired with some "fetches" to then get the Agents from the Hand back into the deck?
Fire Prophecy could be good. It would be more consistent than Heartfire (although less explosive).
So what I'm gleaning from this video/comments section is that everyone playing Standard has forgotten that Grafdigger's Cage exists
I've been running this with Legion Warboss. Frost Lynx is fun too to make it more defensive. Thrill of Possibility can be invaluable to find your Winotas. Honestly, I think with this deck and the shenanigans we've been seeing with Thassa....Agent might get banned soon
Frost Lynx seems like it could be sweet.
@@MTGGoldfish Yeah, with a couple of Charming Princes it can really buy you some turns to find your Fetcher of Agents
Shenanigans isn't in Standard, though
@@ShiningSpear Shenanigans is reprinted every standard these days
Seth you should have tapped the yoinked triome the last turn of m1g1. It's about sending a message.
Is there really nothing better than Sworn Companions to put in that slot?
How difficult is it to make this card say 'whenever one or more non-human creatures attack'?
That might have been a good idea. Triggering for ever non-human is pretty busted.
Im here just to say I hate Agent of treachery
and doubly so when its cheated out with Winota.
I don't think I took into account how much people hated Agent of Treachery.
@@MTGGoldfish It really is crazy how many people have been hating on it...
nathan Mangion or Lukka if you build a Yorion pile.
any reason you wouldn't sub out the charming prince that seemed to help your opponent summon more of his evil blue card?
I would replace Heartfire with (something like Fire Prophecy?) If you manage to draw Agent, it's an absolutely dead card in hand. (Fire Prophecy?) gives us both removal and the ability to get Agent back in the deck, while also drawing a card!
I haven't played at all since lockdown and haven't seen any of the new cards. Seems interesting that Wizards would add Genn and Baku esk cards to this game after what a travesty they turned hearthstone into.
What is Genn and Baku?
I believe they were essentially companions in Heartstone (and people ended up hating and they were essentially banned).
@@zacharymccutcheon8607 Genn and Baku were cards that had deck limitations, like Companions, but their effects impacted the game immediately. Blizzard banned them from standard a whole year before they rotated, which they never did before with rotating sets.
Hey seth? you have had alot of flak for the previews, so i thought id give my two cents.
youtube videos are basically little books.
we see the cover "thumbnail"
we look at the first page "first 15 secs of video"
we read the middle "main content"
we read the ending "the last 1/5 of the video."
--
the previews spoil future parts of the video and start with too little context.
a good book catches your eyes, hooks you with the first look and reels you until the end where you are pulled out and gutted by the fisherman.
--
as such, if you want to improve the initial impressions of your videos, id change the previews to something else.
here are some ideas, and other commenters please offer more suggestions down below.
--
-previews of the deck in action, but not at the expense of the video.
-a running joke introduced for that video.
-poking fun at the deck and its strengths and flaws
-deck tech
-something unrelated to the video until later on, "the planted joke, where you say or do something that makes little sense until later on which will make the planted joke hilarious and give a sense of nostalgia." if done well this is an amazing tool.
-just showing the main theme or combo, then the deck tech so people can choose to see how the cards are supposed to work and how you will make them work.
-etc
hope you read this.
Gyruda is nowhere near a topdeck, it gets hated out/folds to a dispute super easily. Hell I've had a couple games where I just ignore them and laugh at their couple of 6/6 and 7/7s as I proceed to steal their thassa and steal/exile the other two gyrudas
Quick question for anyone. Should I be bringing in graveyard hate in pioneer and modern for Lurrus? An answer would be much appreciated
Yes, you should have some sort of graveyard hate in most Modern and Pioneer decks. It depends on the deck, but Leyline of the Void, Rest in Peace, Tormod's Crypt and Relic of Progenitus are some of the best options.
This video is such a weird great window into the past... even if it's just one week ago into the past xD
Standard is moving quickly at the moment :)
57:16 I know it's a mulligan but still, another temple on top?
Agent should have been a cast trigger, not an ETB.
No, it really shouldn't be.
Yeah, it really should. It is super easy to abuse. Ditto Gigan and Lucca's search.
@@TheBigGSN5 Ditto Gigan? And no, it's not too easy to use. It's a 7 cmc card that is extremely easy to kill. It's got one of the most powerful ETB in standard, but that is fine. As for Lucca's search, you'd have to build a deck round the ability to guarantee an Agent which wouldn't even be that good.
Jack Pabich mana doesn’t mean anything. There is so much free casting and ramp in standard it can come down easy on turn 4. The problem with agent is it should give the permanents back when it dies like the vast majority of effects like that. I wish they stopped printing unfun pushed cards in standard :(
@@jackpabich763 7 CMC only matters if you're casting it. If you're cheating it into play, then it might as well be 20 CMC.
Tour de France is the best I built it through redeeming wildcards and 1 quick draft its tons of fun so thanks also like the fact that all your budget decks are boros so my sacred foundry can be switched around!!!!!
Also yorion control is disgusting especially against the tour de france so I was wondering if instead of 4 grafdiggers cage i run 2 and 2 hushbringers?
I'll be honest, I haven't played standard since Kaladish (I'm sorry if I spelled that wrong) and decks like Gyruda remind me why I stopped playing.
Reminds me of the days when they had to ban aetherworks marvel for getting turn 4 ulamogs and emrakuls out far too early in a standard game. You get to blow up a permanent like when getting your free ulamog cast (except more because you gain the permanent the opponent lost), and you get the card advantage you might expect from a kozilek at the end of turn. The build arounds that winota pays off, however, are much less marginal than those that enabled the marvel (see attune with aether and woodworkers puzzleknot, which are draft bulk without the marvel). Acolyte Chandra and raise the alarm aren't that much better, but they do represent power, toughness, and loyalty on the board, which actually demand answers.
Kinda makes the multiverse feel a lot smaller knowing that facing down a 2/3 nonlegendary spy is more hopeless a situation than facing down a 10/10 world-devouring cosmic horror when playing the same role in two decks with essentially the same mechanic for cheating them into play.
I’ m a little tired about standard, every streamer has played the same four decks since ikoria came out. At this point everything is better to watch than standard.
you could have brought in devout decree against gyruda, since it is black.
Yeah, the problem is that Gyruda usually wins the game when it hits the battlefield (or at least builds a massive board) so killing it the next turn usually isn't that helpful.
I'm currently playing mardu humans with jegantha as a companion in standard (I just loved hero of precinct one since it got printed) and against gyruda kunoros comes in out of the board. Until now I can count myself lucky since I haven't lost a match against this monstrosity. It's just so dumb how often they cast gyruda on turn 4... makes me sad. :D
New meta: Maindeck 4:
Grafdiggers cage
Hushbringer
Mystical dispute
Tristani Discordant
your choice of several boardwipes
???
Profit
I came here because I've been playing Boros Winota - actual aggro-focused Boros, without strand-in-hand Agents - and thought I might get some tips for improving the deck. Guess not.
Also: looks like I will be sitting out standard another year. This makes it literally 4 years straight of non standard play due to broken crap like this. The game needs to be play tested way too many broken cards. Games are basically down to who draws their combo pieces in their opening hand.
Me too. Would have loved to play a mutate mid range deck. But cards like fire, reclamation and other ridiculous management cheat prohibit this immensely or you run into lurrus decks...
It would be sweet if Standard was in a place where mutate was actually playable. I don't think we are there though :(
@@MTGGoldfish i am not sure that standard will ever be in a position where it will be a playable mechanic. Not without some big bans. Standard is too fast and the power too high. If it does become playable it will be after rotation and will depend on what WOTC puts into Core 2021 and Zendikar Rising. As it stands though? Mutate is a failure, its bulky, too complicated, and too slow.
How many cards will be banned this standard season? I'm guessing 3 prob
There might be a few :)
We should side oit Charming Prince against Gyruda
It might be worthwhile to try to give our opponent less good cards to hit.
@56:10 : Has Agent of treachery + thassa in play. Concedes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
That's Standard!
Lukka - agent of treachery. Winota agent of trechery.... Fires- agent of trechery. Yorion - agent of trechery....
And/Or... cat oven, teferi/narset/Ikora... embercleave, flare
Gotcha go play another format. 🤨 say less. Midrange cannot exist as every deck is a combo deck. Noted
Magic in 2020, a.k.a “What dumb card for EDH is ruining constructed this week.”
EDH is a constructed format...
ich3730 I know. The dumb cards for EDH ruin it too.
Nice vid Seth, but cmon... Gyruda the best deck in standard, seriously? xD
Watching M2G1, Seth you always want to steal the real Gyruda with Agent, not the copy. Yes it has a +1/+1 counter, but now you leave any flicker effects live to make more Gyruda triggers. If you take the original, they can't flicker the Spark Double until they find a second clone effect or Gyruda.
Honestly, after watching the Gyruda vs Winota matchup, I seriously dislike where magic is going and the state of standard. It's just combo deck wins at this point :/
Good news: Neither are the top deck in standard right now
@@ImJustHereToWatch14 Doesn't really mskr the combo decks any less degenerate haha
yall are complaining about agent of treachery, which is fair. cards busted.
But as someone who day one built a RW Pure WINota deck... the 6 mana X/X where X is number of creatures you control Flying human from Throne of Eldrain means if you get around 2 triggers you generally dome them for at least 16 turn 4... Maindeck 4 Hushbringers for Gyruda and Fight as One to stopr removal and you just win.
all that said im finding that my mono blue Snek Snake deck is my current favorite. Its not perfect. im unsure if 17 lands are too many tbh.
Have won multiple games by turning my Snake into a serpent which is just the best. basically slam one of the 9 1 drops (yes the stone coil serpents are 1 drops)
then untap hopefully get land 2 otherwise cycle for it. eventually with 2 lands hold down the line for your 1 drop via counters and flashy 2 drops. its basically Reptile Faerie tribal.

I ordered a couple pauper decks from card kingdom and forgot to put scoop in the notes. Face palm!
Opponent punted hard. Could've used charming prince to flicker creatures they own but don't control anymore.
So I haven't played Standard since RTR and with the pandemic (And the fact that MTGO doesn't want to install properly on my pc), I've been forced to play Standard.. Surprisedly I'm having a decent time (I hate Gyruda & Teferi in general)... I was wondering if you had any tips/Advice for me?
I've gotten to Gold 4 in Ranked so far but I've been hitting a bit of a wall the last couple of days... Here's the decklist
tappedout.net/mtg-decks/06-05-20-mono-white-life-gain/?cb=1588740827
Yknow what's weird? This is the second budget magic in a row that's boros but with blue cards that the deck never actually plans to cast. Weird
Wow guys. There's allot of negativity here which I feel is a bit unjustified. Can't we just appreciate the cool stuff you can do in this set?
That's an awfully nice battlefield. It'd be a shame if someone should ... steal ... it.
So, why is SaffronOlive enjoying being a monster so much?
When you were playing against the Garuda deck why didn't you take the original with the agent? That would take care of the spark doubles.
Anyone else really, REALLY wants to give this deck a Winona Ryder-related pun?
Magic Aids did in his
Hoping to get an untapped land when you scry a scryland on top. What?...
I'm sure I'm late to this party, but the joke is that Winota is a rider right?
Man, Standard looks terrible right now. I've only played Pauper and Draft for the last few months and this video really doesn't make me want to change.
Can someone explain why its boros.... when Agent of chaos is in the deck? Shouldn't this be called jeskai winona?
We don't technically have any blue mana to cast Agent of Treachery, so all of our mana is Boros. We do have a blue card we can't cast though :)
@@MTGGoldfish ok that makes sense. i was confused.
Seth... How far you've fallen from the light.
For all winota players the two drop fairy will shut down the whole gyruda deck long enough to get Winota off
Turns off your agent of treachery
first time ive ever rooted for the opponents
Agent of treachery is a miserable card that throws out many years of tweaks made to the control magic sub-archetype of cards in order to sell packs.
Lol. Not remotely the case. Played on very different decks. Agent is in Winota combo, value blink decks, and some ramp decks. Control magic effects are in control decks
Jack Pabich bro you are the problem. Look at how many people are about to leave the game because people like you that try to claim agent is a fair enjoyable card for magic
@@danielkings2443 I'm just giving my opinion. Why you gotta go out and say I'm the problem? Agent is a good card. I understand its effect is NOT a fun one, but it is not unfair in its own right. Getting additional value through things like Thassa or Yorion make for a unique top end card. I do understand the frustration people can experience from getting 2+ through a Winota trigger.
@@danielkings2443 magic isnt supposed to be enjoyable, have you ever been on arena, the only time you can play enjoyable decks is if you make it to mythic in constructed
$110 is a weird definition of budget.
You could basically build Jeskai Fires with slightly worse mana and call it budget by that threshold.
It was under $100 when I played it, but some prices went up since then :(
I don’t understand why everyone’s so pissy about this deck. It functions all on one card and can’t even cast a play set without it. The deck Kicks ass imo. Maybe people should get more creative with their removal.
My question is how these soldier tokens arent human smh
Is this really funnier and more satisfying to build Winota with stupid agents? Add something like Victory's Envoy from Theros or Kenrith+1 red+proud wildbonder unblockable charge. Why if Wotc make a mistake it's gotta be abused as much as possible?
Come on Seth really? booooo
@Lucas Wang I dunno, Wynota different deck?
Ok, I'll leave.
It's cheap and it's broken, why not
Punt. They had one land open that wasn't blue and you could have casted Winota and swung for Agents to get their lands to prevent that Garuda. Instead played Hanged Executioner post combat.
Gyruda is awful but then again so is agent. I remember the dark days of amonkhet/ixalan limited and standard but jeez this set...
Magic aids has a winota video.
The amount of hate Agent is getting in the comments is insane... Yes, it can do powerful things. No, it is not a broken card or deserving of a ban. I do understand the feel bads if you are on the receiving end of a triple Agent hit from Winota, but that is just good running. It happens.
Jack Pabich you do not know what you are talking about. The hate is because everyone not playing simic ramp with uro and agent as the win conns or other ways to bounce or cheat in agent think it is a broken mistake of a card and should not have been printed. Go net deck in some other game I want my balanced game with crazy fun deck diversity that I had a few years ago back :(
@@danielkings2443 I don't play Simic ramp nor do I netdeck. I'm all for diverse gameplay. Agent is an amazing reason for Unique value style decks. Before Ikoria we had decks like UW Thassa blink and now we have Yorion companion decks that fill the value and grindy role. As I said in my earlier comment, I do understand the frustration people experience when getting something like 2+ agent hits off of Winota. That is just a part of standard and variance, though.
Nobody is saying Agent needs to get banned. What we are doing is recognizing that Agent is a product of a broken design philosophy and are voicing our anger over that.
Ghost26968 it’s that plus the fact that mana is too easy to come by. Agent might have been a relatively fair card if it wasn’t so easy to get seven mana or free cast it by turn four consistently
@@danielkings2443 I dont even think Agent is th best thing to do at 7 mana for ramp. Double Uro seems stronger. I do see how Agent has big feel bads. I do think that agent being a human wasn't something that as supposed to break the card, and then Winnota showed up...
That preview... Holy cow.
this aint budget whatsoever
been playing for a year now and i am soooo far away from being able to make this deck, even with my 20 mythic rare and rare wildcards :D
