Have fun with these do-it-yourself LED lights that go around your monitor. They are easy to build and the materials are not at all expensive. All you have to do is strip a fiber optic cable, and then glue them to the back of a foam board whilst using a flashing RGB LED to power the other end. The highly focused fiber optic cables bring the light through the cables and disperses them for a cool effect!
PLUG: Thanks to Verizon FiOs for supplying the fiber optic cable. Only Verizon FiOS gives all its customers SpeedMatch. This means you get upload speeds that match your download speeds.
Materials Used for this DIY Project:
- Fiber optic cable
- Color-changing RGB LEDs
- 330 ohm resistors
- Vinyl tubing
- Old monitor
- Black foam board, 1/8” thick

I tried this.
Bad News: I didn't have any fibre optic wire so I just tried fraying my computer charger wire and using that
Good News: This hospital offers Wi-Fi so I can post this comment.
dang ethir thats a joke or your house burned down
This was one of your better videos in a while, mainly because it didn't feel like a giant advertisement the whole video.
Like your vids but could you please use centimeters instead of inches or at least both so everyone outside the US understands? :)
Huh wtf r u stupid? 1 inch = 2.4cm im from finland and i understand
McPigFin 2.54
McPigFin Nope its 2.54 cm. And no he is not stupid, i think you are the stupid one here.
McPigFin
No niin, nyt ei kukaan enää ikinä ota suomalaisia vakavasti netissä, oliko pakko. Mä meen kantelemaan tästä muulle netille.
Ps. vitsi vitsi
***** what can you expect? He's from finland ._.
Doesn't anyone want to thank Kip for a pretty good project, and not placing the ad in the middle of the video(like most of you guys were complaining about in the last video)? I personally like this way better, with an intro ad, and an outro ad, so it isn't so distracting...
Lol! 96 pin size holes? Mum ADHD kicked in about 36 seconds into the video! More power to you Kip Kay!
Hoooolllddd onnn... You said the computer was turned off but you power it via USB?
KIPKAY IS A WIZARD
We're not even sure if it's plugged into a PC. You can also use the USB from an adapter plugged into an electrical socket.
joep45621 Also, some computers have an option for enabling "always on" feature on some USB ports, via BIOS. (as long it's still plugged into the power socket or on a charged battery)
ivanzegt Tryed it with 3 different PSU's. Didn't work.
TGRS It is a motherboard feature.
its called turning the monitor off. you know, the little button in the corner.
It looks so 80's like,i love it
It's funny how amazing the up/down matching is. We have it all the place, only the very cheap internet services provide more down than up. Actually you can even choose using a switch in your house. So if i want to upload something, i switch over to 10/90 and if i wanna download 90/10 or just balanced at 50/50
Woohooo thank you kip Kay for putting the advertisement at the end
That is madness wiring those holes. Have a thumbs up for the time that must have taken
kipkay one of the only youtuber who can actually brand a product very well! :D
Issy Hussain sarcasm is sarcastic mate
what did i say sarcasmis sarcastic kainou was beeing sarcastic but i agrre with you *****
***** Hiding ads is the opposite of using planned product (or in this case service) placement...
I don't know why there are so many dislikes. Love your videos.
Imagine wiring them fiber optics into the laminate flooring. That would be BADASS!
I think some people are overreacting...This video just shows one example of what you can do with this technology...Learn from it and adapt into your own projects...No reason to unsub or insult...What are you, babies?
MOARE OF THESE VIDEOS PLEASE, KIPKAY YOU ARE THE BEST.
Why don't you just say '1 foot' instead of '12 inches'? Cool project though.
Mr.Halogames
Agreed, Would be better if they were metric, Though not like I'll do these projects anyway
More significant digits.
Reminds me of the headliner in a Rolls Royce (not that I own one). The technique demonstrated here could be used to turn the ceiling of your car into a starry night.
I LOVE your videos. I laughed though when you said "dangerous tool" after cutting towards your stationary fingers with a razor. ;)
I want that upload speed too. To bad we only have 16000 down and 1000 up.
Wow, come people in the world get 1gbps and I get like 2 MB/s lol
Now that's how you advertise in A RUclips video. Well done.
Why did you blur out the monitor brand? Cus they didnt sponsor you?
Almost 2 million dude!
I did not notice if you did this or not, but if you change up the location of the Fiber and put various strands from each of the 3 leads into each of the 3 panels it may give a more versatile arrangement of color. The way it is now it seems to just blink in a certain area all at the same time while the way I suggest will allow it to blink on all 3 panels at the same time. Just a suggestion. Also if you can say where you found the fiber optic cable that would be great... Thanks...
this was a much better placed add than last time where like half the video was for some tutorial website
Heyyy Kipkay just wanted to say i am a bigg fann of your channel thank you for all the videos and tutorials !
I guess you could use this to make ambient light aswell if you make the ends of the fibre cables face the screen itself.
Really happy that kipkay deleted all the damn commercials from this video, because it was getting REALLY annoying
This was awesome Kipkay just the right amount of advertisement and a very relavant fun project to match.
keep this formula!
Woah! That's really cool KipKay!
imagine the whole room ceiling with fiber cables and colorchangind leds.... kipkay please do it :D
Great for making a starry night effect.
In the meantime, in Italy 80% of the population doesn't even know what fiber optic is...
Speed Match...holy shit,that's friggin awesome!!!
I'm very like your videos. It's my dreams when I was a child.Thank you very much
Nice vid Kipkay. Keep up the good work
Kipkay can you please make a video of how to install speakers inside of a backpack? i would love to see what you can do..
Awesome Kip Kay I'll try this hack looks pretty easy
Did you do a video on how to get a stronger wireless reception? I am having trouble trying to get wi-fi in my back yard shed.
Could you make a video tutorial on how to make an inexpensive .22 pellet bore sight?
would it be possible to do the same with white led's and use some more components to make the lights flicker at random times, so that it's a starry sky around your computer?
1 vid with out ads kipkay. I'm disliking till u have at least ONE vid with no ads
wow exspensive cable.... be carefull with glas :D
nice hack :D
Looks really cool, but kinda 90's, I don't mean to be rude but it's just that as time progressed things got simpler and simpler to the point where people think of these things as desk clutter, and you can't disagree with them there.
Wish my ISP offered the same speed up as it does down, i have 152mb/s down.
Just taking a guess here.... That monitor was a dell monitor
it's samsung becase i have just one like it
Akram Farock
Its DELL. The logo is way too short to be Samsung.
Those are technically "fiber optic" cables, but not anywhere close to what is actually installed to carry data. The cables you have are plastic and what they use for show-and-tell and build the cool fiber optic lamps and Christmas trees with.
Real fiber optic cables that carry data are color-coded and have actual glass cores that are 9µm singlemode and 50µm multimode.
Cool i always like Kips projects
what kind of fibre optic cable is that ? i have old fiber optic cable that i got from my local cable company when they replace the cable on the grid with the new one , it's a singlemode cable with 9/125 core and i don't have the cleaver for that so it's a fail for me
I miss your old video's kipkay :(
i came up with a different idea what if you took the fiber optic light out and put them in the see through pipe and then you could put leds on it and it would light up cool but i really like yours to
2 million subs welldone
You dont need to cenzore the TV trademark, its not copyright breaking and im pretty sure its sumsung
You should make a very large one and put it on your bedroom ceiling!
My fiber optic internet connection here in the Netherlands is 212mbit download and 210mbit upload pretty fast
That is a really cool idea and its not bound to monitors :D Looking sharp!
Can you do a video in which you show all the equipment to film your projects
wow !! simple but so creative..thanks
This makes me want FiOS again...
Yes.. I can totally see how fast upload speeds can make you want to decorate your monitor.
kipkay i love your voice can you narrate my life
Which type of Fiber Optic cable it is?
Is it single mode cables used for network connectivity
i don't get why people are mad whn he gets sponsorship. id rather have more frequent videos and plugs than none at all
It's not so much that there's ads. A lot of channels have in-video sponsorship, and i'm fine with it, it pays to keep these people/teams focused on the quality of the videos. The problem people have is that he keeps releasing really terrible videos with most of it being advertisements. He doesn't even care that the stuff he's coming up with lately is complete crap, he just wants to make a quick buck. He's welcome to do that but I'm not going to continue watching advertisements if there's nothing in it for me...
Wish I had this in England! 160 upload would be crazy! :O
Why do you have to blur out "Dell" on you monitor? It's only RUclips.
Do you guys remember when kipkay posted good videos ? Or is that a myth
It's all about light reflecting in the fibers. It won't reflect out. Think about mirrors in a tube bouncing light back and forth.
What´s Verizon?
Ummm well at least I know the answer now. I didn´t expect to start a fight with that question
If you do decide to do this, remember not to use an exacto knife to cut toward your fingers.
I'm not sure WHY such an experienced DYI'er would do such a thing, film it, and tell others to do it.
But in no way shape or form, does is it safe, nor will it help you cut threw. It just gives you a really good chance of slicing your finger to the bone! :D
That's a neater version of advertisement. Much better now.
I live in the UK so I can't get some stuff for your projects and where do u get the colour changing LED's?
Im pretty sure Verizon isn't the only ISP to have equal Up/Down speeds. At least here in Norway, every ISP with fiber cables has that.
Oh! Looks nice!
Request: Make a way to charge multiple Airsoft battery's at once without having them blow up. Maybe throw in a Solar panel if it would help
You always make awsome videos!
Well THIS video is definitely not sponsored by Verizon FiOS' new SpeedMatch internet, where your upload speed is as fast as your download speed.
Did you say 3, 330ohm resistors per LED, or 3 resistors total - 1 per LED?
neat little project, thanks
Cool love it !!!:) huge huge fan!!!:)
Does this only work with dell computers i.e. can I do this on a windows linux computer?
You are jus awesome Kip Kay... I love to watch your projects :)
thanks kipkay good idea :)
I was so excited when They matched my download speed!!! They said I would get a 75/75 internet connection but I get a 90/90 internet connection and a 1ms ping!!!
What is the model of that dell monitor? I Like it! And Awesome Project!
for us who don't know anything in electronics. can you make a guide video so i can have a tiny bit of what you are talking about?
The only problem with the "promotion" endorsed in this video is that Verizon FiOS isn't available in my area.
Kipkay I have the same monitor as you! But mine buzzes and flickers....
Can you use a on/off switch instead of usb ?
Cool idea!
Lots of advertising in these videos now.
yea, fiose is great and all, but at&t is like half the cost for the same in my area.
You should do a review of the evo lazor from wicked lazor
I was going to try this but then I remembered that I have a life.
Kipkay.. You are cool. Could you please make a video that shows how to make a new Pc keyboard hack? I Made the lighting keyboard and the keyboard safe. Please make more of them :D
any explanation why light dont just travel straight through the side of the wires? i mean why the side of the wires dont emit light?
Have you every looked through a fish tank? You can see right through it but when you look at the sides it is like a mirror, when you know it is just another pane of glass. That is how fiber optics work. You have a core of dirty glass, known as doped glass. And that doped glass is surrounded by clean glass. And then you get that fish tank effect and the light shines down the fiber and not out.
Lmao i clicked the link and it gave me this "This is somewhat embarrassing, isn't it?
It seems we can not find what you are looking for. Perhaps searching can help.
domino tux tux" i sure learned alot about this internet speeds
i have verizon fios but no speedmatch??!
They keep saying they're matching speeds...but I'm still at 75/35. I was also told that I would be bumped to the next tier, 150/150 by signing up for the rewards program...that hasn't happened either.
Mood lighting for the computer ?! .... wonder what thats for
Love ur thinking gl in everything u do
Why you censor monitor brand?
