Tissot's prices are 'entry level', but the watches themselves are a step or two above that. The build quality and finishing make them an outstanding value.

I had the 40mm PRX quartz, but sold it due to how it fit. I recently bought the 35mm Powermatic 80 version with the MOP dial and it is chef’s kiss!! I always smile when I take off my Rolex watches and out the PRX on.

I picked up a preowned Seastar Powermatic 80. I wondered if the slower movement would result in less accuracy. It kept terrible time at first. After a full service, it is running within COSC limits. The bracelet is very nice, but I ordered the matching strap and have not felt the need to put the bracelet back on it. The only thing I would change about this watch, as a diver would be a Super Luminova formula other than BGW9. The bluish glow just isn’t bright enough to my eyes. Oh well, nothing is perfect, and this watch has plenty for me to love.

I've had 3 PRXs, loved them all in their own ways, and still love the one I've got. Started with the 40mm auto in blue, that barely fit my 6 1/2" wrist, got a 35mm gold quartz that fit excellently but I didn't love the quartz movement. Sold both of those to afford the new 35mm gold auto and like I said, I love it, gunna be a keeper I bet. The PRX was my entry point into luxury watches, will always have a soft spot for it.
It's a shame people cringe at the Powermatic80 because of the polymer escapement, it's super interesting engineering wise and history wise, and deserves a bit more respect. Maybe the economics of labour and parts might mean that it's cheaper to replace than to repair, but then people take that to mean that it *can't* be serviced, as if a competent watchmaker couldn't service something with 80-90% parts interchangeability with a standard ETA 2824.

    • @jpdemer5
      @jpdemer5 10 месяцев назад +3

The Powermatic 80 was designed from the ground up to be machine-made, and the movements are being churned out on a fully automated assembly line. The result, so far, seems to be pretty reliable, and the manufacturing costs are remarkably low. (At least until the robots unionize.) This is what enables them to make great watches at prices that can't be touched. (Rolex does the robot part, but hasn't gotten around to the pricing part.)

  • @TBA8o8

Buy a PRX before Tissot raises it to $800...Went up $50 from when I bought my 40mm. I very much enjoy the watch but if it keeps creeping closer to $1000, that's a little much and really takes away from what I imagine is a big factor for many; Entry level pricing (for a swiss movement).

As a vintage/Omega fan I've always had alot of time for Tissot, them and Omega were sister companys for ages and shared movements research and even production during the 60's and 70's. in an early iteration of the multi brand mega corp.I've got a 60's Seastar with a not Omega, no siree! Quartz 2030 movement. I've also got a green prx which I love.
mind you, Its got a long lugto lug and its a bit of a plate with an unecessaryly thick see thro caseback, the Powermatic is not an attractive movement, but I still love it.

Yes ! I have one it’s a good everyday wearer, when you don’t want to worry about getting jacked downtown I paid $500 for mine and it feels good on the wrist..waaaaay cheaper than a RO, or even a GP…..and I believe Tissot in the 40s, 50s and 60s. Tissot was considered the baby sister to Omega much like Tudor….if you look at the watches of the late 40s and 50s they look a lot like Omega Seastar/ Seamaster. ????

I already had a Tissot so was interested when the PRX turned up, reminding me of a Seiko 5 I have, unfortunately only available in quartz. So I waited for the auto to turn up, in the flesh it may be 40mm but looks huge and that dial is an instant turn off. So now I'm waiting for a quartz type dial in the 35mm in auto, it might be a while.

Same here. Tried on both at their bricks-and-mortar store in NYC, and found the PRX to be a bit too chunky, even though it fit my wrist just fine. The Gentleman, on the other hand, checked off all of my boxes, so that's what I walked out with. Love the clean lines and the almost-but-not-quite-minimalist dial. (I had never heard of the thing, so the only influence on me was the watch itself.)

I prefer the quartz version- it just looks like it should be a quartz. For the more delicately wristed (like, uh, my friend...) the 40mm is a little big (long) but the 35mm is a little small. They need a 38mm which is probably coming since they seem to be churning out a lot of versions of this. But yes, on all versions the bracelet is the star in my opinion. Each link catches the light as you roll your wrist but not in a blingy shiny way.

This watch "saved" Tissot? I believe that is a bit of overstatement. Tissot had been doing pretty well with their T-Touch line, and their Tissot Gentleman is also a fine watch. Tissot has had a long relationship with the NBA that has been quite profitable.
I have the PRX Powermatic 80 on my wrist right now. As far as "worth they hype". It depends.
What hype are you talking about?
This is not a heirloom watch. It is not designed to be an investment piece. It is a well crafted (by machine, btw) that is designed to give years of maintenance free operation, with attractive looks, style, and quality. And in that, it delivers.
If you are expecting more than that, your expectations are unreasonable.

I don’t get the Powermatic 80 love. Apparently it’s a pretty good automatic movement if you don’t mind a bit of plastic in its vital parts, but I’d rather have thermocompensated quartz. Soulless, soulless electromechanical abomination.
I have no idea whether its plastic parts make a Powermatic 80 easier or harder to service. I’m totally ignorant on that. Might be entirely reasonable.
I have a mania for ten seconds a year accuracy, other people have a mania for automatic movements and no electricity. Whatever makes you happy.

Afaik the only polymer parts in the Powermatic80s in the PRX is the escapement, and it's a self lubricating nylon blend from memory. It has a 80-90% parts interchangeability with a standard ETA 2824. They're serviceable movements, it just depends on whether or not it's economically viable to you to service it in favour of just replacing it. The free sprung balance wheel's weighted regulation system isn't really easily changed at home, so you're stuck with the factory set unless you find someone with the tools to do it, which I don't imagine is too common just yet.

It's not a good watch. Has a plastic escapement ffs.

What's wrong with a self-lubricating polymer escapement? The escapement will last longer than the rest of the watch without service and re-lubrication just on that fact alone. Tissot pioneered the usage of polymers in watch-making, developing the first mostly polymer movement in the world, that became pivotal to Swatch's eventual success. I think it's really cool that they managed to make a moulded plastic part to such high spec and tight tolerance that it can be used in an accurate, high quality watch movement.
