So you say the Tissot’s fit and finish is not that great for its $750 USD price tag, I’ve seen one in person and started my engineering career as manufacturing engineer where the first company machined precision medical tools. Exactly what fit and finish do you see as subpar and for this price point who has a better product? I’m no watch expert but I have to say I was pretty impressed at what you get for this kind of money not to mention the face is beautiful? Not looking to start and argument but trying to understand your comments and what brand has better value? I’ve also seen watches that cost 4+ times this watch of comparable quality.

Having collected watches for around fifteen years, and having owned several Omegas, a few IWC, Tudors, Baume Mercier, CW, Breitling, Seiko etc, etc, I put myself on the list for the BB58 (Navy) back in 2020. Some time later, my time came. I remember being surprisingly underwhelmed. The aluminium bezel simply didn’t have that glossy sparkle of my old Seamaster’s bezel. The blue was…blue! Not Rolex ‘I am so blue Smurfs think I need to tone it down a bit’ blue, but blue. The bracelet was nice, but not extraordinary. It was a very good watch, very nice. And yet, it has barely left my wrist in the last three (ish) years. Not only is it the best watch I’ve ever owned - for comfort, timekeeping and style - it’s my favourite watch of all time. Overhyped, yes. But entirely deserving, in my view, of the hype. Its charm comes at you in waves. It’s stealthy. What I’m basically saying, Andrew, is I agree with almost everything you say about it, and yet I want to fight you for daring to speak ill of it! 😂 Therefore, let’s agree to agree (disagree to disagree).
    Yay, 58. 🎉

I agree about the Nautilus. I just don't get it. I understand the appeal of a sports watch since most people dress petty casual these days and a dress watch might look out of place but the Nautilus is just way over hyped. I imagine a bunch of silicon valley types with a lot of money and they want a watch but know nothing about watches. They read somewhere that Patek is considered one of the best so they start looking at Patek. They all look too dressy so they settle on the Nautilus.

The Chopard Alpine Eagle in my opinion strikes all the notes the Nautilus and AP do with a damn near grand seiko dial while still that integrated sports bracelet look with the Roman numeral indicis. It's perfect.

I worked for a Patek Philippe AD about 12 years ago. Well before the hype started. There was far more interest in the Calatrava at the time. The Nautilus was considered an odd ball. It was too dressy to be a sports watch but not dressy enough to be a dress watch. Back then you had to be a real watch nerd to get it. Then Instagram happened and it became a flex.

Of course all luxury watches are “hype” or just marketed as someone else could say just as well. They are overpriced to make a profit and still payout decent salaries and marketing costs, etc. Of course there are different levels of being overpriced. A Rolex is obviously more overpriced than a Tudor or Tissot is, but not more than a pair of Nikes or Ray-Bans, I guess. In the end it is all in the eye of the beholder and there is no accounting for it 🤷‍♂️ However, people ranting about overpriced Tissots or Tudors while wearing a Nike sweater or 150 dollar sneakers or sunglasses for example, do not realize how hilariously hypocrite they look 🤡

And I gotta disagree about the BB58. As I've become a dad and in my 30s the gilt BB58 is just perfect. I think the gilt in interesting and so versatile I'm more amazed how often it fits in everywhere. It isn't a dive watch that is forced into Elegance. It just is. I'd actually same the same but moreso for the BB58 Bronze. The explorer indices and the Aluminum-Bronze makes the patina interesting instead of gross. When polished its gorgeous. When patinas its distinguished. I'd say the 54 is the one that isn't as great as they say it is. Something about the white bezel throws it off BIG TIME. I don't thinknits the size change.

It just looks nice just like the New Beetle did when it came out but is was simply not the original VW Kafer. The BB will never look forward, never create its own history. Andrew --
This is a very constructive and thoughtful commentary.
Professionally i am a micro-economist (albeit in vastly different market, defense, than watches) and as you can imagine, the various gyrations of strategies and pricing in this market is of endless interest.
From a consumer perspective, watches are rather different from cars or washing machines in many respects but economically they are since the functional attributes -- telling the time and a tolerable environmental robustness in-use -- are almost completely divorced from their pricing; i would say that only in Chinese homages in the $200 to $500 range is there any correspondence to those factors.
No consumers buy other things: a piece of art on their wrists is a huge one, but wealth and taste "signalling" are also important and, in some cases, there is store-of-value effect too. For example in my business i've been told a reason to get a Rolex is that it may guarantee you a last airplane seat out of a third world capital during coup. It has happened, i am sure. Another major cost factor is availability of after-sales service/parts, which is remarkably expensive for firms to provide (although consumers commonly complain of the costs, firms say -- with some legitimacy i suspect -- that such work is a money-loser for them).
My punch line is that a companion piece to this video would be your thoughts on the economics of the business from a consumer perspective. The bottom-line should be: consumers must prioritize their desires and pay only for those options that address them. Each of the offerings in the market are making a very different value proposition to their buyers. That Tissot PRX may not be the most elegantly made watch (as you rightly point out) but, compared to many of its price competitors it offers rather compelling long-term serviceability availability at reasonable prices (like, for example, Seiko or Citizen also). "Yes" those Chinese homages can be well-made with more attractive dials, cases and bracelets for the same price as Tissots or Seikos, but essentially no after-sales service. Etc.
    i natter on; forgive me.
    -- gary ray

    • @frankhujsa821
      @frankhujsa821 6 месяцев назад

From a fellow economist, in regards to your comment: “consumers must prioritize their desires and pay only for those options that address them”. No matter how often economists assume that this is true, or rely on it being true when applying models, I’m afraid that this isn’t how people behave in reality. There is no microeconomic model or quantitative framework that can accurately explain the economics of the luxury watch market, especially at the extremes of price. As you noted, watch prices are disconnected from performance attributes and from input costs. Scarcity cannot explain price extremes either. Perhaps behavioral economists could shed some light on the issue, but they lack models and the ability to prove anything.
Auction theory might help with the six figure and up extremes. Perhaps the scarcity (real or manufactured) and emotional associations with particular watches simulate unit-level auction mechanics in each transaction. Still can’t explain the PRX.
It’s a fascinating field for economists because it seems impenetrable with our tools. It’s like a Rubik’s cube but with stickers that change color.

Plus, the lack of polishing means whatever scratches do occur are very hard to see unlike with my stainless steel watches.

A watch is not good because you don't like the style of the watch, or any other personal reason.
Sometimes the hype is exaggerated, but a Tissot PRX is a nice watch for its price. Same for the MoonSwatch, it's a Swatch, so obviously it's not a luxury watch, neither a watch that you will keep forever. But for its price it's perfect, so nice that you want to have many of them.
I never had the chance to see a Nautilus 5711 in person, so I can't say if it looks great, or if it's disappointing.

The one brand that I don't get the hype for is Mido. It's like the entire online watch community woke up one morning sometime last year and collectively decided that it's the best value out there.
Not that they're bad watches, but my god - the designs are an absolute snoozefest. At least 90% of their lineup is a mall-brand level of boring, with maybe a few exceptions like the Commander 1959.
I guess I just don't get the value proposition and the positioning within Swatch- it kinda exists in a limbo somewhere between Certina, Tissot, and Hamilton. However, unlike those three, it barely has any identity. Like, I'll go to Certina for a great diver, to Tissot for nice vintage-inspired or dressy piece, and to Hamilton for, well, the Khaki. Not to mention a ton of other great brands available at a similar price point.

I don’t mind scratches, it’s not shiny so it doesn’t grab attention, it’s extremely durable, and for the 6 years I’ve had it it hasn’t missed a beat. It’s a watch that you appreciate when you use it for a long time

@@jose7777777777777777 that’s fair- and honestly I get the Pelagos more than I get the black bays - but it’s still expensive. But wear what you like and if you love it then who cares what anybody else thinks

I love my Gilt BB58, wore it today with jogger shorts and a t-shirt, and it looked awesome in the sun - the light really caught the golden edges of the hands - it's the first time I really appreciated that and it made me really happy I own it. Watching this video reminded me how underwhelmed I was with the blue steel version when I saw it in person...but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so if the watch makes you happy, that's all that matters.
I've not got a huge watch collection, and I don't have a massive budget, but I like my BB58 as much as my black Hamilton Khaki Field, Hamilton Cooper and G-Shocks...and hopefully the couple of Studio Underdog's on order 👍

Respect for Andrew criticizing his own Tudor BB 58.
