100% agree with Jerry on Vientos being wrongfully swapped out for defensive reasons. If his spot in the lineup is coming up you cannot take him out. His bat is way too important to this team
First time listening to the show. This analysis could not have been more spot on. I hope we make it to The DS so I can listen to lots more of you guys this year!
Pulling for you Jolly. It kind of had to come down to this for the Mets. They started the season by embarrassing themselves against these same Brewers, Jeff McNeil was temporarily turned into a national laughingstock and fired up Rhys Hoskins who proceeded to take it out on the Mets at almost every possible opportunity The Mets were called soft and played soft...Now's the Mets chance to show the world that you can do a lot of growing in 162 games and exercise some Brewers demons in the process.
This was exactly how Mets lost games early in the yr. Offense comes up small leaving a small village on base. Starter gives you 5 innings, Mendy takes him out & you wonder could he have given 1 more inning. Bullpen comes in & 1 guy blows it b/c he been pitching too much recently.
Mendoza has been great but I think what bothers me with the pitching management yesterday is that it feels like in the last week he’s been all about letting his guys go back out and shove. He let Severino go out after 4 pretty iffy innings and he put it together for 2 more. But yesterday Manaea gets yanked at 86 pitches after 5? Garrett and Stanek BOTH looked great and threw 11/12 pitches. Let them go back out! Any of those three guys could have been put back out. Tough to lose the game by not trusting the guy who is already dealing.. especially in favor of the guy who throws 76 MPH curves and has been overworked
Can’t lie I expected a game 3 as I believe the Mets will be the only franchise to ever play a game 3 in this new format … however I believe in this team outside Pete Alonso and want them to get a home game badly.
Garrett Mitchell only had 8 HRs in the regular season because he missed 3.5 months to injury to start the season. He had a .214 ISO and a 126 wRC+ on the season. DL Hall has yet to pitch out of the Brewers bullpen yet this series.
Fair or not, Mets fans view of Pete Alonso will be 100% affected by whether or not he finally decides to come up clutch tonight. I hate that for him, but he's singlehandedly ended so many rallies this season that he could legitimately tank his reputation in the fanbase with his lack of production when it matters most.
He's been nearly useless except defensive the past month. He strikes out constantly and I don't trust him in a big spot ever. Pls. don't let it come down to him tonight in the 9th.
Obviously Pete has struggled badly, but to those who are calling him a bum who shouldn’t let the door hit him on his way out, how are the Mets going to replace his production? Don’t say Soto, because he’s staying in the Bronx, and Stearns isn’t giving $600mm to a guy who’s going to be a DH by 2026. Don’t say Vientos, because who’s going to replace Vientos’ production? And don’t say Mauricio, because Mauricio has yet to do anything in the majors, has Javy Báez-level plate discipline, and missed the entire season. I wouldn’t break the bank for Pete, but something along the lines of Matt Chapman’s deal is very affordable for this franchise.
Alonso left the most men on base in MLB. Career low in HRs, RBIs, SLG% & OPS. Most Ks since his rookie yr. Had his worst month of the season in September so shrinking when the games are getting more important. Awful walk yr on the heels of turning down extension & hiring Scott Boras.
@@jayjayfrmstatefarm9363 Yeah, although that also means a lot of runners got on base in front of him. Those kinds of “clutch” numbers really aren’t sticky year-to-year, so I don’t put a ton of stock in them. Like, Fangraphs has a “clutch” metric, and the top 10 (maybe even top 5) least “clutch” hitters this year includes Aaron Judge and Bryce Harper. That’s not to say that Pete hasn’t been pressing, because it’s pretty clear that he has. (FWIW, he did have his highest hard-hit% since 2021, but that’s no consolation to angry fans.) He hasn’t had an objectively bad year, but he certainly had a bad year by his normal standards. So the Mets can let him walk, but they have to replace his production, and their plan can’t simply be Juan Soto or one of the young guys. Frankly, even if they DO sign Juan Soto, I think they still need another big right-handed bat.
absolutely right about the lineup - if we had a couple clutch hits we would have won - Mendoza was doing well with a battered bullpen - would love to see Acuna in the mix from the start tonight
Funny you guys compared Garrett Mitchell’s hitting a home run to If Harrison Bader had done it, because as some may recall, Bader went beast mode for the Yankees in the 2022 postseason (10-for-30, 5 HRs).
Good luck today, looking forward to a great game 3 tonight. I do think my Brewers will pull through, I believe the sleeping giant was woke up and started playing Brewers ball
Mitchell has more power than the numbers suggest…he has been injured the majority of his career and hasn’t got the at bats. I wouldn’t consider him the 4th outfielder. We are looking forward to seeing an outfield of Yelich, Mitchell and Chourio in 25 but we aren’t done in 24 yet. Go Crew!
That move to MATON was the most Bob Brenly to Byung-Hyun Kim 2001 World Series, or Bobby Cox to Charlie Liebrandt to pitch to Kirby Pucket 1991 World Series move I have ever seen! That is even worse than sending the real Glass Joe out to face Mike Tyson! It was like being in a horror movie where you are surrounded by Michael Myers, Jason Vorhees and Freddie Kreuger then making a choice between the Howitzer, the RPG, the tank or the flash light... What did Mendoza do...???? THE FREAKIN FLASHLIGHT!!!! 😠😠😡😡🤬🤬 No sooner that kid came out, he looked like a 5'3" 90lbs Wallstreet weakling with a frozen deer in headlights look facing down several Grizzlies! You can tell blown confidence before it even graces the mound. A choice between 100 mph, 97 mph and 96 mph, BUT NO!!!! 88 mph batting practice! A faithless David vs a proven Goliath!
To me it felt like Mendy was managing for the next game instead of the one we were in because we had the cushion of a 3rd game... just in case. I didn't like that he left Sean in as long as he did, he looked spent after 80 pitches and than after Maton had 3 batters he could have been pulled him seeing he gave up a run already or like Jerry said, they could have used Edwin first in that inning and then went to the bullpen.
Poor choice of pitcher but worse was Alonso and other batters once again leaving runners on base. I felt we were going to lose when it was 3-2. I think our main concern other than pitching should be replacing Alonso asap.
Maton should have been pulled before giving up the HR. He didnt have it and went the amount needed to being pulled. Also, how do you fall over your own bat... Pete has done nothing all year... Ps. Maton threw better meatballs than Alonso's HR Debry pitcher.
Pete Alonso is hitting .136 with a .235 slg in 100 PA when the game is late and close Pete alonso hitting .301 with a .588 slg when the mets are up/down by 4 runs or more
@@jaydrose6292 if you look at the "clutch" ratings on fangraph and others, Nimmo is the highest in the league ha. Lindor is top 20 but Alonso is negative.
I don’t understand pulling relief pitchers after only an inning when they are performing well and there would have been a full three days until the next game. Especially with only a 2 run lead
Surprising: None: 0 stolen bases for MIL in 1st 2 games(1 caught stealing) Only 2 BB by Mets pitchers in 1st 2 games Lindor is 0-6 and looks bad in the field
This lineup needs to stop swinging for the fence on every pitch. The Mets are not a strong homerun-hitting team; they have only 2 or 3 genuine homerun hitters. Work on 'small ball' and you'll win more games. IMO
Always appreciate the Shea Station therapy session!
