Alonzo and Winker would have all the vibes and solidify this as one of the very best batting lineups in baseball. If that combo saves us enough to get an additional reliever or two, we would be set up as one of the teams to beat.
@LockedOnMets - Why not have Alonso in the two hole in the order? Lindor, Alonso, Soto, Vientos, Nimmo, Bregman(?),Alvarez, McNeil, Siri Alonso has proven he is not THE protection and that he needs the protection. Lindor can hit leadoff ahead of Alonso because Lindor doesn’t need protection and Alonso hitting second with Soto behind him provides Alonso with the protection he needs.
Vientos is currently a DH, his defense at 3B is much more of a liability than anyone is factoring in. That said Alonso’s 1B defense is far better than he’s given credit for. Nice Vientos to primarily DH and put Acuna at 3rd.
💙🧡 Keith Hernandez was getting on Winker saying he didn’t like him on the team saying he didn’t fit in with his long hair and beard and the attitude said he looked like a Phillies player meanwhile Keith was doing lines of coke between innings when he was playing 😆😆😆
I think largely because we don’t know whether Acuna is ready to be a full-time major leaguer. The short sample last year was encouraging, and exciting … but I fear it overinflated expectations for Acuna, at least in the short term. I guess we’ll see.
There’s a very real possibility Acuña isn’t a good major leaguer, even though he did well in his small sample size last year. McNeil and Marte are also question marks. You don’t want to pencil them in and think they’ll revert to their primes when you’re looking to compete for a championship.
@@LockedOnMets real possibility he's not going to be a good Major Leaguer? He came in and had to fill in for Lindor in a high pressure situation with playoffs on the line and did a great job, when the Mets wanted defensive replacements late in the game they put him in. With the new rules and base stealing, he's absolutely what the Mets need. You cover the Mets and don't think he's earned the right to share the position with McNeil?
Mets fans talk about moving Marte, paying some of his salary to bring in who? Who? Who's going to do so much better offensively than Marte with us paying part of his salary to move him and paying the other guy as an upgrade? I mean thank God Stearns is running this team and not the fans!
@@ronkonkoma4223 I agree. I think what makes sense for the Mets is to bring in someone like Winker to pair with Marte, with both of those guys being able to play occasional OF. It just seems like almost a “no-brainer.” And if they open the season with Marte full-time at DH … they certainly could do worse.
Jurickson Profar is an ideal offensive switch hitting free agent candidate who can hit, run and play outfield. Cedric Mullins and Jazz Chisholm, Jr are perfect left handed trade candidates. Both could play outfield or platoon with Starling Marte at DH. Jazz, however, could play infield and adds speed to the team. Lets Go Mets!!!
In slight disagreement with Ryan Finkelstein because Jurickson Profar is worth a $48 million, 3 year contract with an opt out after 2 years. I'm not a GM, but have been following baseball as a New York Mets fan for 35 years. LGM!!!
@@Jurtexual But the issue here is DH options. Profar could provide some corner OF help ... for a team in search of that. But the Mets are pretty well locked down in LF and RF. And Profar is NOT a CF. So the question becomes ... what kind of investment do you make in Profar as a DH? And I'd be shocked if Stearns guaranteed Profar three years to primarily DH. Just doesn't seem to add up. To me anyway.
I hadn’t really thought about Brandon Lowe, but that seems like a really solid move. I like the idea of bringing Winker back, but if that doesn’t happen I’d be confident with a Lowe/Marte tandem at DH.
We need to prioritize over anything else now after signing manaea is a bridge to diaz that is a set up man highly effective that also if diaz gets injured or has a bad year could slide into the closer role
Mets definitely still need to address their bullpen. Stearns’ typical gamelan is not to sign relievers to large contracts so I highly doubt the Mets will sign a Tanner Scott type, but they should still invest resources into their bullpen to make it more reliable.
Maybe the key to unlocking Nimmo is to get him off his feet for awhile. Nimmo, Marte and McNeil could all share left field and DH. A monster year from Nimmo would work wonders for this team.
I like Nimmo....my only issue with him is that just when it looks like he's getting into a groove....he suffers injuries during portions of the regular season.
@3912James yes, that's why maybe it makes sense to let him groove at DH for awhile. Both him and Marte may be more effective with less time in the field.
Marte dealt with a lot of injuries last year. If he’s healthy he can play 30-40 games in the outfield maybe even more & you can get by. I say by committee… a bit of Marte, Winker, even Vientos Nimmo & Soto for a bit to keep guys fresh. We should use DH and our depth to keep our core fresh. Bottom line … at the end of the year you settle into what you settle into based on how healthy guys are & who’s playing well
Hi Ryan, there are good options out there, and they won't break the Mets' one-year or two-year deals. You mentioned a few good complementary players; you can't go wrong with any of those choices. I especially like Brandon Lowe and Jurickson Profar. What a deal you are to get this kind of talent for little money and no risk on a short contract deal.
For fans who ask why Stearns didn't sign a Blake Snell or Corbin Burnes, here's your answer. Stearns knows that in two years, most pitchers won't pitch more than 4 innings. Why pay someone thirty million dollars a year if he's only going to give you four innings? Get yourself some solid innings eaters who can keep you in the game, and focus your attention on building a strong bullpen. That's why he signed Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes. Most games are won or lost after the 5th inning.
That lineup he put together is trash around 8 mins. You can solve all the bs by getting both bregman and Alonso period. If not go get a gold glover in Bregman and trade for Cease and Arraez. You get a stop gap with a monstor on base percentage bat, speed, stilll keep first open for Vlad Jr. And the length now allows you to go lindor, Soto, Bregman, Vientos, Nimmo, Alvy, Arraez, Taylor, Acuna. That lineup would score a crazy amount of runs
The Mets needs to sign Alonso 1B, Wi nker OF-DH and Iglesias utility infielder. THAT IS...Acuña will be our 2B regular. He is playing winter ball in Venezuela 338 ave with 15 stolen bases!!!and hermetic defense..Mcneil, Marte and Baty supouse to be traded, especially for pitching depth, relievers.Gilbert a lefty bat OF needs to be considered for make the team after spring training..
Baty's upside is too high. His floor is a utility player with above-average power. He can play 2B, 3B, and the outfield. He's a career 283 hitter in the minors. This past season, he hit 276 on the road. He's a big kid with 30 home run power and a solid glove who is cheap and controllable. That's really important because it give you financial flexibility.
You know I was just reading the Mets blog about considerable DH and I was thinking of a realistic DH with power switch hitter Josh Bell and could also man 1st base if Pete needs a day off and Pete could DH it would be perfect He’ll just be a DH and a spot fill in for Pete kind of like Vogelback was Remember they even tried
Ryan you forgot that Santander not only can play the OF but also had play 1B so to say that the Mets can’t Santander because is only DH/OF and can’t give Pete some rest
@@TheMacdod I think the issue with Inglesias this season will be whether the Mets can sign him on a split contract. I think he is a great clubhouse presence. And a valuable "fill in" kind of player. If he holds out for a major league deal, .. like you said, the Mets have infield options.
Easy. Resign Pete & sign Bregman. Pete, Bregman & Vientos can split DH duties. Bregman gets most starts at 3B with Vientos playing some 1B too. We need the bats. Hopefully our young wave of hitters will be ready. We need Jett the Met, Gilbert, Clifford, Acũna, & Mauricio to start contributing too. These youngsters could really make this offense dynamic with their speed & power blends & make the roster & lineup deep. We need to focus on the bullpen too. The Dodgers, Phillies & Braves all have elite bullpens. We blew at least 10 games last year due to a shaky bullpen. We do have arms coming back but we shouldn’t have to trade top prospects for bullpen help at the deadline when you can sign relievers for cheap during the offseason - it drives me nuts.
Met fans are too willing to trade away prospects. The thing about young players like Acuna is that they are controllable and cheap. You have to consider the future. If someone like Sproat blossoms into a star pitcher. You want to be able to sign him to a long-term, team-friendly deal. That becomes harder if you fill the back end of your lineup with expensive utility players.
You trade a bunch of prospects for Vlad and you go back to Pete and say look, here’s the deal… We’re going to offer you above your value for a one year contract to come be our DH and finish this run with us. He can decline if he wants, but I think he’d want to be apart of that lineup. Ideally, the trade would be something like Jett, Clifford/Gilbert, Batty and an mlb regular. McNeil or Marte. I would be reluctant to give up Acuna and/or Mauricio, because one of them is the starting 2b, and there’s depth across the infield with them.
