South Africa is headed to general election in less than eight weeks and the ruling party, African National Congress, is in deep trouble. Polls suggest the ANC, the party associated with Nelson Mandela, could lose majority in the upcoming election. Since 1994, the ANC has enjoyed nearly unshakeable hegemony. The party is mired in allegations of corruption. The latest is a scandal involving the South African parliamentary speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula. She has been accused of accepting $135,000 and a wig in bribes when she was Defence Minister between 2016 and 2019. Will politics in South Africa see a momentous shift in 2024?
