Just got one a week ago and love it paired with a TS9 and MXR EQ. Quiet enough for bedroom practice or probably loud enough for use in a band. 20 watts is loud.
Dude it's loud enough for a full band on 10w mode haha
I hope so I want one for my band
I get mine next week, can't wait
I use a dsl20 cranked into an isolation box with a 57 in it. I was a JMP 100w guy and was scared to spend the money on it, but I have been happy with it. 2 EL34s!
It's a killer amp!!!
I’ve gone through dozens of amps and have to say the DSL is a REALLY great amp and covers a lot of ground tone-wise. I put a 12AY7 in V1 to bring out more of the crunch character and play it through a G12M and Eminence DV-77. Hit it with a Mesa Flux Drive for balls and an OCD for searing leads. Nice playing dude!
Thanks dude! And I totally agree. The dsl20 covers so many tones and is super versatile. Killer amp for a great price!
You you know when the video starts with the Lay it Down riff and follows up with Unchained, you're in for some great sh*t! Awesome playing
Thanks dude!
TLDR: The DSL20HR at full blast equals the loudness of the top of the line DSL100H played at 4 which is ear shattering and too much for any real world application.
People think amplifier power is linear and proportional and it's not.
A full size 100w amplifier is not double as loud as a 50 watter, it's more like 35% louder.
Given the same amplifier line, using the same speakers cabinet, by doubling the wattage you only get 3dB louder, every 10dB difference is double the loudness.
I just bought one used but pristine and I love it. I had a Studio Classic JCM800 and just didn't gel with it, sold it on. The build quality on my DSL is far better than the Made in UK Classic.
Much cheaper too! Dsl20 is one of the best amps for the lowest price out there!
Good to know, have the opportunity to get a used dsl20hr and after this news going through with the deal
I run my DSL20 thru an ENGL 412. Love it!
Great tone! At 0:40 best Jim Breuer doing Joe Pesci impression ever!
Thanks and hahaha sure is!
I picked one up last year for something to play late at night without annoying the neighbors. I was first surprised by how big the dsl20hr sounds for being a 20 watt amp. And I don't mean loud, I mean it has a lot of depth, it SOUNDS big. I've cycled through a lot of smaller tube amps and usually I end up being dissatisfied with them and selling them after a month or two. So far I've been very happy with the dsl20hr and while I would like to try a peavey 6505mh I don't think I'll ever sell it.
I run mine into a 1x12 cab with an eminence governor and I've changed the preamp tubes to tung sol 12ax7's and the power tubes to jj 6ca7's.
Definitely a HUGE sounding amp. It's An incredible amp for the money
Great amp indeed one of my favorites. So versatile and takes pedals well.
It's really is crazy versatile and takes pedals amazing too! Thanks for the comment and sub!
I just got one.. this amp is perfect for me, the 80's tone is there.
I use a Proco Rat (LM308) in front and a DM2W delay in FX Loop.
You can't go wrong with Predator, best movie ever. That's the spirit \m/
Yep yep and yep!
Got my DSL20HR in 2019. On the green channel I keep it on the edge of breakup ...and use a Suhr Shiba od or Riot distortion. On the Red channel I use a Maxon OD808 for fat mid od or ...a boss od1 for a brighter flatter chewier response and finally a catalinbread Nagaviper treble booster (dallas rangemaster treble booster) for the Judas Priest screaming leads. Love it ...
Awesome video. Agree...its perfect for 80's hard rock and thrash metal or basically any form of Rock or metal. I use a Boss EQ pedal with mine and I can get any tone I want. Best amp at this price point by a country mile.
Thanks! It really is by far the best in that price point no contest!
Where do you put the eq?
@@musik4life24 in the fx loop last in the chain
Thanks again Predator!
Sounds damn good!!! Plenty of headroom and you tell in the sound!!!I'm a sucker for the 90s chuggys but I like your channel to get a real perception of an amp.🤘👍
Thanks! Appreciate it!
I love the tones out of this head.
Unfortunately mine had been plagued with issues.
There is a loud pop when I switch from the high gain to clean channel.
It also started switching channels all by itself.
I sent it back under warranty to be looked at. Currently awaiting their findings.
Sorry to hear that! Hopefully it's fixable and they can get it back to ya soon!
Thats what she said
OK?
I use one for a home set up.Through a 1936 2x12 cab and.... I use an attenuator. And it has a very welcoming sound. It has an excellent range from clean to mean.
Sure does!
What's not to like? As I was a teenager in the 80's 😁
Great 👍 playing
Great 👍 tone
I got a gas ⛽ for that BB
Thanks! The bb is such a killer pedal!
Save some money and get a Caline Orange Burst pedal. It's a copy of the BB. It sounds great and is only about $30.
Dude, I didn't know you had a YT channel. Im glad I found you.
We meet a couple times at Dawn of the Shred in CO.
Right on! Yeah I just started my channel a few months ago!
Looking at reviews for this amp thinking of replacing my Blackstar HTR5 mk2...I think you just sold me this...cool video btw...very refreshing...
Right on! Thanks. Glad I could help! I also have a new video that came out today on my exact settings for these tones.
Bought a dsl5cr and sold the ht5r. Fucking love the dsl5cr
OMG Whaaaaaaaat man !!!! Its a killer killer killer sound i can't believe it !
It's an incredible amp for such a low price!
Suena nuclear amigo!! Derribando mitos!!🤘😎
Gracias!
Excellent video to show off the amp (and your playing). Ok, you sold me on this head. I'm going to get one. One question before I pull the trigger: How is the tone at actual bedroom level? Seems like this thing can get loud
Thanks! I recorded this entire vid at bedroom level actually. I live in a small condo and can't be very loud. It's fantastic on the 10w mode for bedroom levels. Super loud on 20w for band or live settings
@@shredaintdead9323 Wow - can't believe this was on the lower wattage. This is awesome. Getting the head ASAP and THANK YOU for all the info. You got a new sub right here.
@@bev.disgrace you're welcome and thanks for subscribing! I have a TON of vids with this head on my channel. Check out my series Metal Shreducation. I teach you classic riffs and how to get the tone. Almost all of those vids feature the dsl20 since its super versatile!!!
Just one question if you don't mind... I know it has been quite a while since you demoed this amp but how usable is its FX loop? I have quite a range of mod pedals I would like to run through the loop and people are not very specific about that part of this amp... Any thoughts? Thank you bruv, really appreciate your insight and demo!
This is the only 20w marshall I've played that actually has a modern useable fx loop. Works fantastic. I had a noise gate, delay and reverb all in the fx loop for this entire demo.
Awesome Demo and Riffs Man!! 🤘
Thanks a lot dude! Really appreciate it! I have another video on the channel showing my exact settings from this video too.
Great video - I run two in stereo each with its own 412 - they are great amps.
Thanks! That sounds like an awesome setup! Really are great amps.
Sorry.. but i hate demos with string noise, mostly because tube amps really shine when turning up the volume
Wow some sweet tones , set the world a fire 🔥
Thanks! Great riff and song!
I have one on order. Just waiting now.
Nice! You'll love it!
Cool Video and Jamming , Subbed
Thanks!!!
This or the mini be od amp for home level tones. 80s hair metal is mostly what I want it for. Thanks dude
Honestly either choice is great. This is 2 channels and has more features. But if you don't need a clean channel and wanna save some money you can't go wrong with the be mini.
Nice video ! What is the song of the first riff in introduction ? Thanks
Thanks! It's lay it down by RATT
@@shredaintdead9323 Thank you very much Buddy ! 😀
Great amp! Before I had the JVM205H, I had the DSL40C. It came alice plugged into my EVH 212 cab rather than is stock combo speaker.
It really is! One of my favorite amps ever
@@shredaintdead9323 I didn't care for the scoop switch or button but keeping the gain around noon kept it sounding good.
@@johnsguitarmusicanddemos same here. I'm not a scooped mids fan in general though. Especially on a marshsll. They have KILLER mids!
Totally enjoyed the video.
Thanks! Part 2 with all my exact amp settings will be out next week!
After playing the lbxS and the iconic out of the3 amps which one gets u excited and motivated to play the 80’s stuff and VH
Tough question! All 3 are great. I'd probably have to go with the iconic though since it has the most tones and versatility of all of those. Very fun and inspiring amp!
Hey, could you tell me what pickups are in the Harley Benton? They sounds great to my ears 👍🏻
I put a set of bareknuckle true grit pickups in that guitar. They're fantastic!
Gregg, what would be your ideal cab to pair with this head?
Honestly anything with a good set of v30s or g12k100 speakers would be great for this head. I'm using an engl 2x12, but mesa, evh, marshall would all work great too!
That "Lay it down" intro was spot on!😎 Would this amp be enough for small club gigs?
Thanks and absolutely! It's plenty loud!
Wait when did he do that? I listened to the whole thing and I didn't hear that. I heard Van Halen unchained, which is a similar riff also in D
I played it in the intro
That thing kicks ass
I ordered one and its suppose to come may-june. I cannot fucking wait to plug in my Jackson king v loaded with emgs with a sd-1 in the front.
Awesome! You'll totally love it!
@@shredaintdead9323 Hell yeah, I've only saw good things about this amp. It seems so worth the price.
@@timmbosliice honestly it's the best value for money ever. It smokes amps that cost 2k! I'm going to be featuring it in a lot more of future vids on the channel.
@@shredaintdead9323 Awesome! I'll stay tuned.
I got one for christmas and i love it... and there is no hum like people said...
I have this amp to and it does sound awesome but mine to has gremlins the sound drops low or will drop out all together mine made the loud popping noise when switching between channels an inherent problem with these amps but they are cheap and sound unbelievable
Another cool video. 3 days on your channel and I can only say... Good job. I have a reasonable doubt... This Amp or the EVH Stealth 15? I'm still thinking about it.
Thanks a lot! I actually have a video comparing the 2 if you wanna hear the side by side. But my personal thoughts are the dsl20 is a much more versatile for everything 80s, but the clean channel is basically useless. Needs a boost too. It's much fuller sounding though. The evh has a better clean, doesn't need a boost and a smaller, tighter and much more aggressive and clearer sound.
@@shredaintdead9323 thanks! I'll go for the EVH.😉
Probably Could sound even more 1980s with a G1265 or G1280 speaker!
Hah this one or dsl1 for home use? I can play bit louder but I dont like it too loud. Got MB Caliber 50+ combo so I would run the 20w through it. For dsl1 Id have to buy 4ohm cabinet...
You can get pretty good bedroom level tones with this in 10w mode. Still fairly loud, but nothing crazy.
niiice niicee. I will get this amp for practice.
You'll love it!
sounds great possibly my next amp been looking at the DSL10 also
It is great! And do you mean the dsl1 or 15? There is no dsl10 pretty sure.
@@shredaintdead9323 yeah the 15 i think
@@shredaintdead9323 i just check its this one i guess i got confused because its a 1x10 combo.Marshall DSL5CR 5W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp

Amazing. Liked and subscribed.
What's the gray pedal on the cabinet?
Thanks! Dunable eidolon reverb and delay pedal
@@shredaintdead9323 oh ok I thought it was some kind of preamp. My dsl20hr is ariving on Tuesday, can't wait 🙂
Can it do a Van Halen Brown sound?
Absolutely!
The hell dude? You DO realise that playing Demartini riffs CORRECTLY… exposes the rest of us ?🤘
Sorry not sorry?
hey dude i know this is 2 years ago and i hope you still see this. anywho i’m in a 21st Century Glam band and i run two full stacks right now. do you think this thing would be loud enough for big festivals? or what’s the difference between this and the DSL 100?
thanks.
Yo dude! Are you going to be miced up at these big festivals? It's a very loud amp since it has full size el34 power tubes. Putting it through a full stack should be enough volume for anything. You could also look at dsl100w though if you needed more headroom/volume though
Dsl100 has more channels and is really the only difference
@@shredaintdead9323hey dude sorry for the late response. 9/10 i’m gonna be micd up since they mic everything up now. i’ve been looking at the dsl 100 yesterday and today so i might go ahead and get that. i always love the extra volume.
also this is the first time commenting on your videos but every 80s video you have uploaded i have watched! you have great content and the “shut up i’m about to tell you” gets me every time 😂😂
when i get the dsl 100 in i’ll let you know how it sounds 💪🏼🤘🏼
@GlennR.Townsend right on and thanks dude! Love telling people to shut up so I can tell them! Haha
Nice Demo! Really shows it off. Great price. Kind of partial to the Origin 50. Love to see a shootout of the two. I have a Crate BV120, EVH 50w 6L6, and an ENGL Fireball 60 but really wanting a Marshall around for VH and 80's stuff. And the prices are rite on ($500)! Have to see????
Thanks! I have a part 2 to this video dropping tomorrow morning showing my exact settings for these tones. I've played an origin and those are good, but this dsl20 completely smokes it! It's the perfect amp for the VH and 80s stuff!
Super guitar -
Question:
You bought the EVH 50 watt; ENGL, and you’re still not happy/ getting the 80s hard rock sounds?
Interesting. I was going to get the EVH Lbx ii 20 watt. Because it was light ( vs a 50 watt head) and it’s patterned after a Marshall
From your experience it seems that nothing sounds like a Marshall, but a Marshall. ??
Just curious, if i dont own any cab. Can i output this head to an interface that is connected to a computer?
Not sure. I think it has an emulated out but I never use that kind of stuff.
@@shredaintdead9323 thanks
Bro where are you located? You got some dope riffs!
Thanks! I'm in Denver but originally from L.A.
So does the 40watt DSL combo sound this good? I had a 2005 100watt DSL head that was a monster....waaaay to much amp for the places I was playing. Looking for that 80's tone in a lower watt unit....but I was afraid that 20 watts wouldn't be enough.....40 watts sounds about right.....wish this head came in a 50 watt model....that would be perfect.
I've played the 40 and thought it sounded great too, but just so you know, the 20w head is more then enough for anything. Especially through a 2x12. There's not a gig that exists that this couldn't do.
Do you prefer it over your Engl?
@@deltawhiskey1398 I do actually. My engl is the better amp overall, especially in features and clean tones, BUT I prefer the marshall grind and mids. It's perfect for an 80s guy like me.
I got one really cheap actually like it for what it. Cleans are okay but dirt is fantastic esp with a boost. My only complaint is it’s loud changing from dirt to clean channel. Kind of a loud change. Prob wouldn’t Notice live. Do you gig with it?
Totally agree. Not playing out live right now. Waiting till pandemic is over to get back out there. Not much gigs to play here right now unfortunately. But I 100% will gig this when things calm down again. I love the amp.
@@shredaintdead9323 does yours do the pop from dirt to clean?
@@Jbeland1 not getting the popping sound changing channels on mine. Honestly though the cleanish channel is useless to me. I barely use it. Can't get completely clean and so ice picky harsh highs. Only thing I don't like about the amp
Could you include a close up so the amp settings are shown on your next video ? Thanks.
Will do!
New video up with close up of my settings!
Predator is da man! You da man to dude. Nice amp. How much is both the Amp head and the little adapter?
Thanks dude! The head is only $500 and all tube. The overdrive is $160. Killer pro rig for not that much money!
I don’t know man 660 is a little pricey but worth the cost I’m gonna have to save up a little bit
May your frets never wear out

Thanks! I definitely thought so!
I don't know why people would want to add a Overdrive pedal when the GAIN channels already sound heavy. I liked your examples until you added the overdrive. lol.
It's not to add gain, it's to tighten up the low end and add a bit of mids. I get what you're saying, but it's really more of a feel thing, especially for leads which is what I mainly use overdrive for. Makes leads sing more.
Full of malarky for sure 😅
You know it!
