"What's a MegaAmp?"

This is my 250th video and probably the last upload before I break 5000 subscribers--so this is to commemorate both.
This is a thanks to all my subscribers, I couldn't hope for more enthusiastic, encouraging people in my comments section and you're all the reason that I go through the trouble to do it right. Thank you.
If you aren't subscribed, you probably should, chances are I've recorded one of your favorite games already. If I haven't, feel free to request it.
I tried to make the biggest, baddest mix I could since doing this for the years that I have has exposed me to a lot of VGM on the Sega that I never knew about before, and I've come to appreciate it greatly. I've gone for the most diversity and tracks were judged on general catchiness, nostalgia, popularity, diversity of styles and composers and technical merit.
This video 100% made with Free Software. Debian Linux (OS) / Audacity (sound recording) / SoX (concatenation & processing & sound encoding) / FFmpeg (video encoding) / GIMP (art) / Gnumeric (track and time management)
Recorded on an ESI Juli@ soundcard via RCA inputs from custom RCA outputs from the MegaAmp amplifier.
All tracks are randomized... with a few manual rearrangements. :)
Uploaded file size: 4.5GB...!!!
The track list is too long for the description! Click here to see it:

Holy cow this must have freaking taken *forever* to type. Kudos to you sir.
11 HOURS OF BLAST PROCESSING AND I LOVE IT
The good piece had also had a Motorola sound chip that also combed with the Amige 500 series, only slightly modified. Nices Konsole the Megadrive.
@@chrism2027 I know this is late...But you just mentioned the Model 1 of the Megadrive, said model was a tad bit harder for sound programmers to use as they had to use both chips in unison to make the sounds we know and love! It wasn't until the Model 2 came along that Sega decided to merge both chips into a single, custom unit for ease of manufacturing but that also had the bonus of making it a bit easier for the sound programmers as they didn't have to split their attention between the two chips and could just focus on the one chip unit.
@@chrism2027 ah Motorola really made some nice chips back in the day...
Cuz Sega does what Nintendon't!
Best Motorola chips only made from the best Motorola potatoes.
I did not expect this to be a carefully curated list. Pretty much the best of the best is on here and pre shuffled. Only a real passionate fan would put in this much effort. Well appreciated!
"No Emulators Allowed on my channel."
You are so badass. Thanks for this huge effort!
@pepperchaun2184 Actually a lot of us do… the emulation for the Genesis sound can be annoying on a lot of cases
I've immediately started to dance when ToeJam & Earl's music began.
Coworkers looked strange but that's ok. I'm just a 30-something guy having a great Friday of nostalgia.
I like how your *coworkers* looked strange, rather than thinking *you* looked strange :P
@@RWL2012 i mean they do look weird with eyes in their heads and only for appendages... most Funkatronians are way cooler looking...i mean to the aliens...(Flarb grab a jar, they're starting to think.)
The Genesis/Megadrive is the greatest 2D Arcade Action console of all-time, like if you agree.
The best, no doubt.
I still love my Sega genesis
Hey wait, the Genesis AND the Neo Geo AND the Saturn! :) The Neo Geo and Saturn are 2D monsters but the Genesis is incredible too, especially for a 1988 console!
Greatest arcade console? Its good but you can't say they did arcade consoles better than the Neo Geo or the Neo Geo CD, since they actually make arcades too.
Well that's speaking from a technological standpoint, we all know the Neo-geo, Saturn etc were technically superior to the Gen/MD, I'm mostly referring to the quality and depth in its game library.
I've been rockin' this playlist for almost 2 years now, I think. Learned of so many new tunes and games from it, plus some nostalgia. I get excited when I hear one of these "new" tunes in another video. Also, when I hear a version of the tune from another platform, but they doesn't tend to sound as good as on the Genesis, but I've heard a few exceptions. I know there are at least a few whose SNES versions seem to bury the melody for some reason.
The spectrum of the Genesis' sound chip's timbre is so unique to me... that "twang"... it's so crunchy, I love it. I appreciate your passion and knowledge reflected through the descriptions of the audio hardware. I've been a music theory guy for a long time, but much hardware knowledge, be it instruments or speakers/amps/etc, seems to pass right through my brain without sticking.
Because this very video has carried me through many, many work days and shopping/gigging commutes, I'd like to give you some money, if there's an avenue for that. It wouldn't be a lot, but it just feels wrong to not try to give something, especially when I've gotten so, so much out of this one video.
I'm glad you didn't pull out of RUclips a few months back. I believe I understand some of the frustration of the platform as a reflection of the economy and society. I don't like ads either (I basically can't help but yell at them and call them out on their BS), so I caved to paying the monthly fee, but I use RUclips so much, it's well worth it. I can only hope the creators I watch get a decent cut of it or I try support them otherwise. I cringe at the pushing of the short-form content to complete with TikTok, especially with all the autoplaying and other behavior-funneling functions and algorithms. The hunt for dopamine rewards in those formats can be so unmindful and seemingly unhealthy. If you ever did feel the need to leave the platform, that's understandable -- and I wouldn't begrudge you one iota, FWIW.
Thank you so much for your effort, your approach, and your heart -- it's made the world more bearable, and sometimes even enjoyable. 😂😅
@@rycona9878 Thanks for your thoughtful words & support, this is the kind of thing that makes it worthwhile. Made my night!
Wow thanks for this. These all sound amazing through the megaamp! The stereo seperation is nuts. Ever thinking of making a playlist with the system C2/linear (this is what I read online and heard and example of sonic 1 starlight zone and thunder force 4 spacewalk and blew me away) filter on?
Thank you for preserving the masterful art that is Sega Genesis music! We are all better people for having this available!
This collection must have taken ages to compile, tracklist and upload. It's made my week at work practically a billion times more productive. You, sir, are doing God's work.
Video game music is my greatest escape from horrible coworkers.
00:44:48 F-15 Strike Eagle II - Decisions, Decisions
Uses the same TUB BELLS patch from DX7 from TOP GUN intro, very nice.
Great track too.
Megadrive / Genesis are the best sound chipset 😍😍😍
Been listening to this for years now. Makes for perfect work music.
Same, i agree
Thank you for including Ecco the Dolphin on your list. In my opinion best music on the Genesis and maybe best game music of all time. Not my favorite track but everyones different XD
I've listened to this mix completely through at least 10 times. This gets me through work without fail every time. The Sinking Old Sanctuary is still my favorite Genesis track of all time so I always love hearing it when it comes on in the mix.
I believe you should make another iteration of this, because I've listened to this playlist to death. Its carried me through many all-nighters and long working days.
This must've taken you forever when you were making this! So many of my favorite tracks and tons of great tracks from games I've never played before. Sometimes I wish I was a 90s kid, lol. Thanks for your hard work on this!
Thank you for taking the time for not only putting up this epic blast processing in high quality, but also for randomizing and providing timestamps!
wow. Been listening to this for a while, and never with headphones. Vectorman at around 7 mins in is in stereo! so cool
Absolute fuckin madman, even timestamped every goddamn track. I do wish it had more Phantasy Star in there, but otherwise this is above and beyond.
Rafflesia Training Grounds is just lovely. The Sega Genesis sure had some great soundtracks
I've been listening to this playlist several times a week for the last couple years now and it never stops being great. Really helped me rekindle my love of Genesis games and retro gaming in general. Thanks for putting together such incredible content like this!
man I wish I could make a party just playing this video but I don't know weirdos like me.
Tell me when
Say when 😆
don't forget as we need invitation :)
Just Add Me!
Bro I'd go to that party! I'd rather hear some kick ass Genesis synth songs than most pop music from today!
I've been listening to this playlist since 2021, and the 3 hour long since 2020. Thank you so much for your effort and dedication, the work must've been immense and you deserve millions of views.
"This is my 250th video and probably the last upload..."
*gasp*
"...before I break 5000 subscribers"
*phew!*
This channel isn't going to be done until I'm uploading the soundtracks for "Barbie Super Model" or "Barney"
Bruh Barbie super model's MY JAAAAAAAAAAAAAAM
Ending on the Sonic 3 end credits was the perfect choice. My hat's off to this masterful mix.
Seldom of these games I've ever played. It's as if I'm being introduced to entirely new worlds that have merely been forgotten. Thank you, Dustin, you glorious, magnificent man.
Sounds just like the launch model of the Genesis I was lucky enough to stumble across, the MegaAmp does wonders! The SNES and Genesis are two of my favorite systems, so having this fantastic mix of songs is much appreciated! Kudos for having a song from Time Trax, hearing a Follin tune always brightens up one's day!
Definitely a model 2 being heard, I remember that tighter sound from my own mod back in 2009.
Road Rash II Vermont love that RAW FM sound, great tune and a great game too, used to rent it a lot.
vectorman tidal stage theme fucking rocks!!!!!!!
Unbelievable list, I'm surprised no Gunstar Heroes made it on to the list but I mean I can't complain, masterfully done.
This is the grittiest, dopest of the dope, best sounding soundtrack to my childhood I have ever heard.
TaleSpin Italy is such a banger, love that irregular time signature
Nice, and I'm part Italian.
Fantastic job! Thank you so much for keeping these classics alive and for all of your hard work!
Really enjoyed this, it has most of my favorites! I noticed a few missing, and for fun made a list of games with decent music that didn't make your list. The result was about 150 games, with about 20 notable. Amazing how much good music this had.
This the best video game soundtrack I've ever found on RUclips. Never gets old.
2:18:00 might be the 1st time ever I hear the Genesis sound chip (or any other FM chip really) doing that trick with the drums... some Stewart Copeland delayed/gated drums trick there, interesting 🤘
So I really enjoy listening to this while doing household chores. Makes it seem like an adventure....that is, until my wife says "umm, what are you listening to?". And for a VERY brief moment, I stop dancing while washing dishes.
Outstanding. I always was a fan of the Genesis Sound System. So Nostalgic.
I just want to say two things:
1) Thank you for doing these amazing recordings. I've been subbed for a while because these are easily the best way to enjoy this music.
2) Sorry about the errors in the old Project 2612 sets. We were trying our best, I swear! ^^;
The Project 2612 sets still have a ton of value for time reference & track titles and they've streamlined my uploads a lot, so thanks for it! The stuff we do is a huge undertaking and I'm sure most people understand we aren't going to get it right 100% of the time.
Amazing playlist, so many great tunes and good memories here. I still love the Genesis sound, no other system ever sounded like it.
its so good to hear non-emulated genesis music again, thank you. especially Southtown's Theme at 9:37:00
Non-emulated music? would it sound different?
@Carlos Eduardo Espinosa Sánchez Ok gracias, revisare.
Vector.. i still can't remember if i finished that game or not. Was one of my favorite games
Been listening to this lately while working on Sega Genesis guides. I truly appreciate your uploads and I can't get enough of that authentic sound!
Makes me fill up with emotion all these tracks because I got to play in the best the best era of gaming from Amiga, Commodore 64, NES, Master System 1/2, Mega Drive, SNES, PlayStation, Dreamcast, Xbox, Jaguar, GameCube, PS2, 360 and partial PS3
There's been some good games for PS4 but that's it in the 80s 90s till the PS2 era it was pure awesome to be a gamer now I don't think it is
I'm a modern kid but I love playing old stuff.
This video is like Christmas. Makes me all tingly inside. Eleven hours?! Holy shit!
9:53:00 The Sword of Vermillion.... WHAT a Game, never beat it as a child on the actual console... I was too scared of the monsters. Came back 15 years later, downloaded it on an Emulator collected all the rings of power, the Sword and saved the princess. Perseverance my friends!
I dont know why i really search for these arcade old game songs.. but i cant sleep without to listen while im in be.nostalgia!! It calms my soul!!!
That feeling of reaching a new level in Sonic & playing it for the 1st time is probably something i'll never feel again.
Brilliant selection! Love you channel man. Keep up the good vibes!
Really nice to see how you respect and bring honor to this music and the artists who composed it.
same
This is a great work (honestly, I can't immagine how much must have taken), but it would be better with at least an image of every title (a screenshot, or the cover).
I didn't know how to automate this at the time, but now I do. If I do another compilation in this vein I will (using cover pictures from RetroArch).

PERFECT!
I'll be there to enjoy that too.
Again, great work.
30:00 the licc
I've been listening to this in bits over a month, still not finished.
Love that Vibraphone sound in Stimpy's Invention, I haven't heard anything like it in any other FM soundtrack it almost sounds like a sample
i just realized this is 11 HOURS not 1 hour, this is still playing haha
I'm a DJ/Producer. It all started here with the BGMs. Didn't have a CD player so I would use the sonic tunes as music for Lazer tag. You could use the games extra features basically as a sampler. Adults kept telling me to stop playing video games and play sports. Well meaning, but sports have never earned me money. I now completely rely on sounds and visuals to support me. That's why it's called Genesis.
This is fantastic, thank you for putting this together! So much better than the rips from emulators (or even the other real hardware rips from consoles without a Mega Amp and in desperate need of new capacitors).
This is an excellent playlist! The Sega Genesis is one of my favorite consoles, and this playlist is perfect for work and research. Thanks for putting in the time and effort to make this. I know it couldn't have been easy!
you are amazing. thank you so much for the service you provide to the people. take a break ! hahahah either way you deserve it. you have done so much. wow
You really nailed it with this playlist. I always said Alien 3 stage 4 sounds like it could have been written by Trent Reznor. And if you listen to the stage 1 music, tell me No Doubt didn't sample it for "Holla Back Girl". Lastly, Cargo Ship from JP Rampage Ed. is just a wild track all around. Really awesome composition and I've reached out to Sam Powell once a long time ago to see if he still had any original mixdowns laying around and if he'd share them. He replied and said he would eventually look around for his old Sega work, but he never did get back to me after that.
I think I hear his everyday! Thank you Dustin, for this amazing music list!

@@zaubert86Thanks for the correction. 🤝🤗
damn, i somehow missed this upload. just stumbled across it now. awesome compilation, perfect for bgm while i’m workin. nice one
keep going dustin, great job! you made my soul truly happy. thank you man.
These are the best comments, thanks
I like how Jungle Strike's intro is just Desert Strike's with a bit added at the beginning lool
You nailed all of my favorites. Even Shi'ar empire from X-Men and Cave from Undead Line. Oh and Gaires Mission 3, Time Trax - Red Zone. 4 of those games most people don't even know they exist let alone have personal recordings of them. Ah, but Mercs is a big omission for me, that music was BUMPIN' on a model 1. Can't please everyone 100% I suppose, but if you somehow missed that one do check it out it rocks really hard.
Nice work!
The playlist could have used more of your tracks, but still I can't complain. Cheers Matt, and thank you for your contribution to my childhood memories.
still listening to this, what a gem. thanks again
Devilish has to be the top 5 best sounding OSTs on the system (tied with Gauntlet IV). it just sounds so fat and full. Which is quite a testament considering there are no PCM Samples used
Sonic 1 Green Hill Zone got tears into my eyes!
Almost every song you chose was my favourite song from every game consistently, The Terminator Holocaust, Mickey Mania Mad Doc 4.. its uncanny lol
It's because you got good taste!
gracias amigo muy muy buen trabajo,....lo aprecio
Thank you for being so commited to these Genesis ost
The Monster world track is really soothing for some reason. I wish i had played the game
Finally I finished all compilation! Very good playlist for work this days! Thank you!
Subbed! This is a lot of work and this is the least I can do to support you. There is a lot of surprising tracks that sound good for games I haven't played yet. Robocop 3 intro from your other uploads was one of them. Sega Genesis/MD music for life!
I've listened to this whole thing four times.
My work day is going to be much more bearable for a while now. Thanks!
2:15:49 for a minute I thought it was some secret level from Mega Turrican that I haven't heard before 🤘🤘nice sounding samples/instruments
Respect for including Ballz in this mix, that soundtrack is so nostalgic to me as bad as the game was lol.
Love that Nu Romantic Productions/Mark Miller sound
legend recorded it all himself, no emulators. it makes a difference.
Few funky tracks in the history of funky tracks have reached the pure funkiness of Toejam Jammin! It's the jam of all jams!
Okay, I never thought I'd say this but the Road Rash II Vermont track kicks ass!
I've probably put at least 100+ hours of watch time on this video. As a construction worker, I love having this going in the background while I'm working on stuff.
6:17:50 Is one of my favorite Genesis songs ever! (I've heard sooo many but I'm just now adding this to my list today)
GEMS gets a bad rap, but some of these songs are actually bangers (TJ & E, and Vectorman still sound great)
IMO it really shouldn't, it's technically a great driver. Problem is the tool was easy enough to use that you had people who didn't know what they were doing basically porting midi music to it and using the default patches in a poor way.
@@DUSTINODELLOFFICIAL you could definitely tell when the games had less budget (or care) for the music department when they used some of those awful patches lol
Dune was also pretty great sounding with those default sounds
i listen to this a lot for music with no words, the fact that it was recorded properly makes such a huge difference, and these games were amazing, i was just destroying X-Men, and yea the 4 characters in that game were really cool nightcrawler is so insane for pros, and the way bosses were designed on genesis was just amazing u could have a tough time or if ur a pro u just slaughter em, yea awesome stuff man a lot of em i like so far
I listen to this almost every day
Great stuff, man! Your work is much appreciated. In this case, the more people who who hear the Genesis, the better. YM2612 synth 4vr!
where is Street of rage? 1 2 and 3
2 is on here, that’s it though.
OUTRIDE A CRISIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE TRACKS IN THE MEGA DRIVE
AWESOME
I put this on when I write, dude. Thanks for the upload.
Its missing phelios...its nice to listen to this list. thank you!
I just can't stop listening to this! Thank you!
"Battle - Dragon Slayer" should include "Legend of Heroes" at the end, which you can fix in the timestamp post.
Great work on this mixtape! I hope it spreads around and educates many on the magic of FM-synth.
Such a cool mix! Thank you for your work. This is pure childhood and nostalgia and joy. I demand more mixes like that! :) Perhaps various ones focused on action, exploration, calmness, etc.
wonderful mix, this made my friday!
