If I lived in the Wayne, NJ area, I would definitely visit Sound Exchange. This tour brings back so many fond memories of my favorite record store of the 1970's. It was called Capers Corner, owned by Ben Asner. I hope you thrive for the next 50 years, Anthony!
I used to shop at Sound Exchange during the mid 70s in Wayne. The last time I was there was prior to moving to California in 1990. Seeing it is still in business, despite changing ownership, leaves me in awe. There are many records, CDs, and memorabilia items purchased for less than $5 back in the day can bring in many times the original price. Sound Exchange was my go-to for bootlegs. If I do make my way back to Jersey for a visit, I will make my way to Sound Exchange.
I've visited that store probably twice a year for decades.... Every time I left frustrated because it was a disaster. Impossible to "dig". I haven't been in probably 5 years. The place looks great now. To say the store needed that was an understatement. Great job! I hope you make a million bucks!
@@BrendonSnyder Back in 80 Sound exchange was there back than for ten years and than they closed shop use to get my records there . Then they came back in mid 2015 back to area . They had good system to order records they hold for you I ordered The River Bruce Springsteen in 81
I wish I had a place like Anthony's close to me. The closest are. 147 miles, 289 miles and 467 miles away from me. If it weren't for Amazon I'm not sure what I'd do, I'd really rather buy from a local store. I did get a mail order from Sound Exchange once (The Buggles on vinyl) and I was very happy about it. I would have never have found it without your show, Brendan. Support your local stores because they're like a lot of things, you don't know how much you'll miss them until they're gone.
Absolutely I have a local independent record store very near to where I live I walk down there at least every few weeks to see what's new,but usually I'm ordering off Discogs, ebay, sometimes Amazon
I have a few good local record stores nearby but records have gotten so expensive. If I walked into a place with CDs everywhere like this I would go into a music coma.
In the mid 90s they rented tapes, this how I first saw kiss vs the phantom! Don't get up that way often but definitely stop in when I am. Glad to you you're keeping it going, thanks for making the video!
I was just at Sound Exchange last week for the first time. I would have never knew about SE if it was not for your channel. I loved the store and Anthony was cool af. I will be back to spend more money than I want to in due time. 😊
I used to work at the Strand bookstore in NYC, and customers not putting stuff back in the right place, or purposely hiding books because they may buy them later used to really twist my melon.
Wow!! Thanks Brendon and of course you too Anthony. Thanks for taking your time to show us all the ins and outs of the store. Probably my favorite video from the store. So informative and what a nice transition and improvement you have made to the store Anthony. Thanks to both of you again 😊
The Princeton Record Exchange is my go to store since its so close to me, but I'm going to have to take a day trip up to Wayne to visit the Sound Exchange. Looks amazing!!!
I had NO idea this place was still in business. I haven't gone there since maybe 1990. I will definitely stop in and check it out. I wish Anthony many years of continued success.
I first went to Sound Exchange in the late 80's with my older brother and would buy Led Zeppelin bootleg cassettes. They were the only place you could get them. I was hooked. So cool to see it still going strong and it still looks almost exactly the same. I moved to Florida 10 years ago and really miss that place.
When I'm in the US, I try to go through either Newark or one of the NY airports back to Europe( Germany) and I can only recommend you to visit if you are in the vicinity
love this video. cool to get insight into a record store. i should talk to my local store guys more. i'm a bit of an introvert, but this motivates me to do it.
Anthony’s done an amazing job with that store. I used to go up there when Art owned it and it’s certainly far more organized and neat. I gotta get over there, but being that Dave’s store is around the block, I never leave my spot.
Fantastic video as usual. I really enjoy the behind the scenes working of a record store. I'd love to see more of these and learn more about the business. Keep 'em coming guys!!
It would be interesting to know what are the big sellers. My friend has a store in Hong Kong and his gimmick is to post on IG every customer holding up their purchase(s). Last year you could see that Starboy was in every 2nd photo. Then it went to old Kanye albums and now it's like every 2nd photo is Taylor Swift. I also wondered how stores order their stock. Is there like 1 or 2 central places you go to?
So Cool Anthony What you did with the Posters on the ceilings and how they come down in that shape. Has a certain art all its own . Bro looks awesome ! Love the energy of the show. You Guys should have a Show on Samsung TV ! I d watch !
Thanks for sharing! Such a great store!!!! Would love to have that here in Massachusetts. Its great to see a store with a cool owner who actually knows music . Does Anthony do mail order? What kind of music is Anthony's band?
Easily my favorite record store. I'm not from NJ but get to visit around Christmas and I stock up (which I feel guilty about considering the inventory system!) Cheers to Anthony and the crew!
Hey I used to own a record store in Brooklyn , I was friends with Art , my store was called Ciro’s CD Cellar 87-93 , I now live near red bank, I go to Jacks music shop old school record shop , hope Art is doing well , still a big fan and collector as well ,good video
Fantastic video. Sound Exchange was my go-to record store from 1984 into the early 90s. It became unbearable with those CD holders bending into the row. And the LPs were so crammed together, it wasn't worth looking through them. So I stopped going there. So Anthony has done a wonderful job making it more neat and organized. But my question to Anthony is this: wouldn't you sell a lot more used CDs if you just lowered the prices a little? I can get a used Rolling Stones CD at Princeton Record Exchange for $1.99 or $2.99 ($4.99 tops)....... it would probably be around $6.98 or $7.98 at Sound Exchange. I'm not sure how much the store was purchased for. I'm sure that comes into play. But from a consumer standpoint, common title CDs should be cheap. Nobody wants them anymore. Plus there are just so many out there. Again, I would have loved to hear more about what it's like to run a record store like this from a financial standpoint. But it just seems to me like you'd move a lot more inventory if the prices were a little better. Princeton is packed every time you go there. Yes, it's in a great location. But the prices are so friggin cheap, the turnover is unbelievable. You can go there once a month and see completely different stuff every time.
There is a dollar cart and a dollar bin and both have lots of great titles, including the Stones (and it is buy 5 get one free). In addition, there is a policy of buy 3 regular used cd's and get 2 free, which makes the price much lower
If I lived in New Jersey I would definitely visit sound exchange but I live in South Georgia and the closest record store is in Macon Georgia or Atlanta Georgia 150 to 200 miles away from Albany Georgia and that's an all day drive.
This is actually so interesting to see. DVD and used records are our top sellers at my store. DVD being our top following records. No one talks about purchasing new stock and how much work it is and a lot of the time it gets back stock due to limited copies. Idk if that’s something that’s happens with CD but for vinyl it was always a race to get it or we got it and instead of 10 copies we got 3 and it be back ordered for months. Funny story we just got an order that we placed almost 2 years ago just showed out out of no where lol.
