Philip swearing is something that caught me off guard, I've been watching since 2019, but never heard it being this easily said :D Nice one Phil keep up the good work.
Until a recent upgrade 2 weeks ago, I was running CS2 on just above the minimum requirements, with a i7 4790, 16GB DDR3 1600MHz, and a HD 7770 1GB! The GPU was a huge bottleneck - at lowest settings the game was around 40-50fps average for me with a lot of stuttering, so I'm surprised to see it running so well for you here.
I've got the i3 12100 and Rx 6500xt in my main rig with 16gb ram and I've never had any problems. The performance is great (coming from an i3-2310m and GeForce 410m) I've never had less than 100fps in cs2 with high-mid graphics settings
Used to play on an i5-650 and a rx 570 build until recently and I used to play csgo a lot but until the overhaul I couldn't run it anymore, cs2 is one of the reasons why i upgraded my specs to a i5-12400f and a rx6600 lol
I'm playing on a stock 4690k(no hyperthreading) and rtx 2060 6gb with 16gb dd3 2133mhz ram. I know my cpu is terribly outdated but, i have been able to play every game i have tried so far without much issue. CS:GO ran at around 200+ fps on 1440p. CS2 barely gets 50-60 fps with constant stutters so i can't even play it anymore :(
my i7 4790 is handling the game at 200+ fps on 1080p with a gtx 1650 probably upgrade to a i7 tier xeon for the same socket, or if you can find one, a cheap i7 for the same socket
It's my understanding all AMD gpus get a short period of super stutter when first running CS2, but funs better in 30 seconds and perfect after a few minutes

@@EthicalAllelethink of it this way, when you die or lose games, mistakes were made 😊 if you have the luxury of recording your gameplay and watching it back you can find some big issues in your own gameplay. Just think: Did I die to positioning error, or mechanical error? Why was I in the area I was in/ would I have positioned myself like that again if I had the same info? Was I exposed to too many things? How could I have played with a teammate in that scenario? Did I die with utility on my belt? Even just asking "what did I do wrong there" can be huge. Even if you win rounds. Yes it won the round, but these players might be bad, would this have been a way to win a round against better players that have better aim? Edit: Jocko Willink has a good motivational speech about it. I think it's the "good" speach? Like you lose a game because of bad aim? Good. You have room to improve. You lose a game because of bad mental? Good. Take a deep breath, get back on the horse, you have room to improve. It's worth a watch if you haven't seen it 😎
Will you ever come back to making maps for the game, I wonder? Your series on de sparity is still the single most favourite thing you've ever done, to me
This video reminds me of me growing up in Brazil playing every game on minimum spec and trying to squeeze every last frame from my games to have a playable 30fps haha. Makes me thankful for being able to afford high end stuff nowdays :) I am sure this video right now is helping someone somewhere who is just trying to have some fun with counter strike on their old hardware. Thanks Philip!
While both of those GPUs are definitely well selected terrible cards, I suspect the initial stuttering that goes away you mentioned is more to do with CS2 building its shader cache for previously unrendered content. This is behaviour that I have observed across a range of low/medium to high end hardware from both the green and red teams across my friend group, especially after driver updates.
Yup, same here. I always use DDU when installing new driver updates, and CS2 is very stuttery in the menus and in the first minute of a game right after a clean driver install. It happens for a bunch of other games too. (6800XT)
@@LPgmxDan I have never had any issues using DDU. I don't think the stuttering is even an issue because I'd imagine clean installing drivers would always clear the shader cache regardless of if I'm using AMD Cleanup Utility or DDU. I'll definitely try it for my next driver update, but I'm not expecting it to change anything 😅
why do I watch these videos when I stopped playing CS over 5 years ago? No idea. Are they as interesting as they were when I played? More so Your enthusiasm rubs off amazingly
Might have been interesting to test it on integrated graphics. I remember my first laptop ran CSGO at only 25 fps on integrated graphics. Would be interesting to see how well CS2 is ran on that.
It's below minimum spec and anything weaker than a 6500XT won't be competitive, as 3kliks concluded. The game might launch but performance won't be acceptable. This wasn't a "will it launch?" video, but a "how playable is minimum spec?" one and we've got our answer. If there are APUs roughly equivalent to the 6500XT then one of those would've been interesting but idk if they exist.
Man. You literally run the game on a cpu (I3 12100f) that compares against i7 8700 in game comparisons and benchmarks paired with fast 3200 ram and you name that CS2 on minimum spec? Minimum spec PC for CS2 would be something like i3 6100 paired with ddr3 ram..
Yeah, I stutter anywhere from a tenth to a quarter of a second when I scope in with the AWP, scout, AUG, or Sig. Tried changing a bunch of settings, mainly anti-aliasing, but nothing seems to fix it.
4:25 super aliased, low res, and torn cs2 isn't a bad vibe honestly. the semi-photoreal clutter and texture detail with those effects and the saturated lighting make for a retro-adjacent look that i prefer to a lot of the retro 3d stuff that's been floating around the past few years
Yeah... Me with my integrated graphics doesn't do so well with CS2. I struggle to get 40fps on the absolute lowest resolutions and settings. Completed killed playing CS for me.
Currently playing on a 2016' laptop. A i5 7th gen, a gt 940m and 8gb of ram. I support playing at 40/50fps and sudden frame drops. I don't wanna accept my setup is bad
i7 7700k can't pull a consistent 120fps even with a 4060 :/ I get the 7700k is old now with poorer single core performance than something like a 12100, but really? I'm getting better framerates in Squad/Arma Reforger than in cs2? It's disheartening and haven't really bothered playing at all when i drop under 85 fps from a couple smokes (or even lower if on Ancient at CT side spawn when everyone starts moving - though there's no action but it's still painful).
Always nice to see that troublesome 6500 XT come into play Philip. Have you seen that new RTX 4060 Ti that has the m.2 slot? Now we need playing CS2 on minimum settings on the 6500 XT played through the 4060 ti
The most disapointing thing in CS 2, for me, is how bad and grainy the game looks in 1024x728 res. I've played on this config for more than 5 years in CS:GO and now it is literally unplayable, you can't even see the enemies.
hey, I had this exact same issue and you should try switching the anti aliasing above cmaa, turing off the "dynamic resolution" or whatever the dlss shit is, and upping your texture filtering to anisotropic 2-4x.
also since ur also playing stretched id make sure ur display scaling properties on ur graphics card control panel/drivers is set correctly. cs2 reset all my settings on my Nvidia control panel so make sure to fiddle with whatever graphics settings u have there.
Hey Philip, please dont manually spin fans on PC components. They act as generators when spun manually and can fry your components. This goes extra for cleaning with compressed air during which you should hold the fan in place. Just be careful with your tech ❤
I am now able to afford a PC a child-me would have probably fainted over, however, I want to emphasize how AMAZING these types of videos are. It is absolutely awesome that you do this kind of testing for those who have to make do with whatever they have (like I once had to). Not nearly enough youtubers and reviewers do this. Not everyone is running games on a streamer rig with all the latest gadgets. Thank you for your service, philip!
btw you have to remember a lot of cs players are from Eastern Europe and a lot are from Latin America. PC components are expensive in these parts of the world. So much so that it straight up says to one of my friends that he cant even start the game. Also "can be run" does not mean "playable" and "playable" means at least 60 with good visibility without freezing too often.
Would be interesting to know how much difference the operating system makes. Could you maybe try a simple Linux install (something like Linux Mint, Fedora or Pop!_OS) with minimum spec and compare, since it's often said that Windows is bloated and Linux wastes way less resources if any.
It's a fact Windows is bloated and only gets more bloated Hell it wastes power advertising to you, be it news, the weather or other irrelevant cr@p Depends on what Linux you use, but yeah. Wastes much less resources
@@3kliksphilip With CSGO I tried both Windows via DirectX and KDE Neon (Ubuntu 22.04LTS) via OpenGL and saw a big performance improvement over OpenGL on Linux compared to DirectX on Windows 11 and I do not recall there being an option to use OpenGL on Windows, I am not sure if that is purely down to OS changes or just a change of API use from DirectX to OpenGL with driver differences between Windows & Ubuntu Linux.
I've seen CS2 performance benchmarks on some subreddit, iirc the DX11 renderer performed better than the Vulkan renderer on Windows alone, the latter aligned with the Linux client's performance; suggesting that Source 2 is better optimized for DX11 than for Vulkan (if not being DX11-only, providing Vulkan through something like built-in DXVK). Nonetheless, @3kliksphilip I'd love to see a deep dive performance comparison between the two platforms and renderers.
I felt a huge, sudden shock when Phil said the GPU I'm currently still using was mid range at launch... Time flies by so quick, especially after 2020. I still have only 8 gigs of RAM too, and it's starting to feel quite cramped here...
2020 is almost 4 years ago and just after the launch of RTX and the push for higher graphical fidelity in games. its not a surprise that your GPU struggles. there is also the releases of the ps5 and new Xbox to consider as those consoles held the gaming industry back for so long

i fucking hate that they had to do this graphical update shit, i could barely play it at 25 fps then and now i cant even launch it, there should atleast be an option to make the graphics the same as the original
I would LOVE to see you do some tests on Linux vs Windows. I love linux but I do think there is a latency difference between linux and windows, at least on my PC, and I'd love to see that quantified.
Using a fairly new CPU from Intel is the problem with this test. The game is a way to single Core to think that the threads can make a big Diference. Even the new thread reaper has problems playing cs2(bellow 60fps)
Philip , thank you for providing us with such high quality content over the years . I've been obsessed with watching all your videos since the going low in "csgo" series and all your channels keep delivering . sincerely THANK YOU ❤
Hardware threads refers to hyperthreading - and that really does use CPU hardware to achieve parallelism within a single core Multithreading is a programming concept, where you use many threads (potentially hundreds) to achieve something. CS2 almost certainly uses many threads, but ideally your CPU has 4 hardware threads across two cores to dedicate to the more busy threads
@@vibaj16it's not "actual" parallelism, hyper threading basically means that you have 2 schedulers for that one CPU core taking advantage of any timeslots unallocated by the other scheduler. You won't have 2 tasks/processes running at the same time, but under the right circumstances you can run 20% more processes in the same time
@@vibaj16 I think each core has an extra set of registers and instruction decoders(or execution units not sure) which allow more than one compute block to be used simultaneously. For example if a non hyper threaded core is currently doing an integer operation it cant use its FPU or other compute block until the integer operation is finished. But for a hyper-threaded core if the next instruction is a floating point type it can execute it in parallel with the integer one. In a way think of hyper-threading as a means for a better core utilization
@@vibaj16 the idea is a core will have two schedulers processing two different instruction streams that use the same cache If one of the instruction streams stalls (accessing memory that is far away in cache or even RAM) then the other instructions stream can continue executing whilst the other is stalled There's some even lower level concepts, like when areas of the core go dark for one instruction stream the other can use it, so if one stream is doing a floating point calculation the other can do some integer math
good job man! youre literally doing valve's job at this time, your testing will surely help the devs improve and optimize the game's experience on budget and low end pcs! cqnt imagine the time and money spent looking for those parts, keep it up!

if you think about it you could've saved about £100 by getting a refurbished 64gb steam deck for about £250 (probably cheaper on ebay), plus the dock thats about £300 in total. could make the case that building the pc opens the path to future upgrades but how much cheaper (and easier to get), its a no brainer
I think this would be more interesting testing a selection of older hardware. Especially the i5-750 which it recommends which is from 2009 and has 4 cores.
I5 3330 and GTX 1050 ti 8gb ram ddr3 freezes mid round even though I was having 60-120 fps when they added new updates I had around 50 fps on average especially on ancient
I don't understand the discussion abou the threads. "Hardware Threads" does specify it very well and additional threads provided by HyperTheading are, as described by Intel themselves, logical/virtual. And virtual threads are by definition not hardware threads.
I'm pretty sure these logical cores do require a little bit of hardware to work. Threads are basically always virtual, you can run a 16 thread application on a single core, it's about the cores and whether they're physical or virtual, and whether a thread can be assigned an actual physical core or a virtual one
You know I am using RX 5700XT 8GB + 3200mhz of 4x8gb + R5 4600G somehow the CS2 Ultra settings hitting temp (repasted and cleaned) 82-84*c while on High settings was 78-82*c (stable mostly on 82*c). Yes it is 100% possible. I’m playing on an Alienware 15R2 laptop (8 years old). I7-6700hq (4cores-8threads) and an Nvidia Gtx 970m. Totally playable and never really dropping below my 144hz refresh rate. Usually about 180 FPS. But also my windows 11 is completely custom and stripped down. 54 process’ at startup, and about 70 process with steam, discord and game open. Never experience the laggy feeling that Philip is talking about. Always feeling snappy and real time responsiveness in cs2
Do you call what we saw in the video "snappy and real time responsiveness" :/ BTW: I also doubt everybody have a custom and stripped down version of Windows 11.
@KrissFliss you misread, nowhere in their comment did they say it was in the video. They said it was snappy and responsive due to their custom tweaking.

3kliks I had some issues with cs2 not shooting when pressing mouse 1 on occasion using a debian based linux distro. Can you show this error in your next video about cs2 on linux? It only happens in cs2 so I know it isn't an issue with hardware.
My rig is almost 12.5 years old. In the past two years I have changed a gpu and bought an extra 16 gigs of ram. Here's the specs: Intel core i7 4770 3.4 GHz RTX 3060 12gb 32gb ram 1666 MHz The game runs extremely bad at times, fps might drop down to 20, no matter what settings I choose. Its especially bad in deathmatch game mode, while in competitive fps swings around from 50 to130-150. 😅
I Upgraded my GPU from RX 580 to RTX 3060 Ti. But, because of my Ryzen 5 2600 I'm gettin max 120 FPS with drops (Sometimes it's stock on 60 fps and then goes up). Basicly DO NOT BUY A POWERFULL GPU IF YOUR CPU SUCKS!
I''m still using most of my 2012 build (2500k, 8gb ram 1600mhz, 1060, no ssd) and I have over 100fps most of the time. I've been pretty surprised with how the game is somewhat playable with such an old build.

@3kliksphilip my game becomes unresponsive every few rounds and i have to win+tab for new desktop to open the task manager and end cs2 processor to close the game, i found if i removed launch options the game would only blackscreen once a game (better than every few rounds) but this is driving me crazy cause i never have any other issues with any other games. i did a bios update, graphics card update, reinstalled cs2, reinstalled windows10, tried cs2 on another computer on the same network (no blackscreen freezing) specs: i3-4160, gtx 1050, ddr3 12gb, 512gb hdd. the game is playable its smooth i get an avg of 119 fps on 1920x1080p but my issue lies with the constant blackscreen freezes.
ok, just for the sake of it, I'm one of the people that did experience the stuttering as well as constant crashes and freezes ever since cs2 launched, never had that in csgo. So, I used to have a pretty decent gaming setup but ended up selling it a few years ago as I just wasn't really utilizing it anymore, I still played csgo from time to time however and ended up getting my very old setup brought to life for that specific reason, it's basically the remains of an old alienware r51 r1, it has an old i7 3770k, an IEM gtx 660 1.5gb vram, and 16 gb of ram (ddr3 cause motherboard doesn't support better) and 250gb ssd. I know it's pretty pathetic specs nowadays but for my use it was very respectable, I played csgo from time to time in the weekends on it and got about 160fps on average, it wasn't as good as my 500+fps rig previously but I didn't feel too hindered by it. When cs2 dropped I expected a downgrade in performance, and that's fine, however I can confidently say now that it's just not "playable", I get 70fps on average which is fine, all low settings except for fsr that is disabled cause I can't stand the blurriness it brings. But the game feels so off, there's definetly more delay than in csgo, it stutters or plumets to 30fps randomly, and the worst of it is it sometimes just hard crashes the pc altogether. And yes I get it, clearly I need to upgrade the pc to keep enjoying the game from time to time, I just thought I would share my experience and specs with you so maybe you can finally find those dreaded renowned stutters you're looking for, as for me, I guess I'll return to cs:s for the time being 😅
I'm always reminded of PlanetSide 2 with videos like this and how that game that came out in 2012 would not be playable with these minimum specs for a game that came out in 2023.
Minimum reqs. unplayable due to 1 second stutters when: you shoot, see explosions, smokes, when you breathe... Wtf is "amazing" with getting 60-90fps, but being unable to shoot when HE explodes on your screen.
Stuttering on CS2 only feels noticeable on a PC that could handle CSGO at 400+ consistently. At least in my experience. Hope that Valve gets around to fixing it.
I'm from Ukraine, I have a laptop that is about 10 years old, it can't even load steam properly, not saying anything about CS2. Maybe if u don't need those bad computer parts u can send them here so I could try running CS2 with 60 fps 😢
I get the idea that Valve wanted since the release of CS2, to fully replace CSGO but they should have keep it as a separate game rather than switching to the beta depot of it so users with low-end PCs can still play the game in some sort of way. So, if people want to still want to play the game they either upgrade their rig or go back to play CS1.6 or CS Source. However, there's more options in the horizon like CS Classic Offensive and Legacy Strike so it's just a matter of time.
This is really good harware! I would like to see this on a pentium 4 or core 2 duo with a geforce 8400 and see it works! 12 gen intel is not low end in any way. Also the sudden frame drops are probally due to AMD's crappy driver support which it really sad. Some card that should still be perfectly useable are rendered useless which is why I only really go with intel cause I want to be able to use my PC for 10+ years.
minimum spec Pc, are a waste of money, u never know when u will get screwed by valve again and then what? go for the next minimal spec? i would advise people getting a mid range PC with overhead upgrades, that would mean, they could upgrade to a better CPU or RAM in the future. a PC should last you 8-10 years.. not every year upgrade, unless u are very rich and stupid.
Every single time when i'm booting CS2 i need to play quite a few matches of deathmatch or casual until my pc is simply frozen in CS2, and you could only reboot it, there's no other option. And it always happening at least twice... Otherwise it will block in competitive or premier and my mates are fuming already.

@@3kliksphilip Oh my god, this exactly describes why I have been having such a bad time with this game recently! I really love this game, but lately I haven't been wanting to pick it up anymore. I have been dreading losing and having no impact in my matches. I'll try readjusting my mentality, thanks for the tip!
@@EthicalAllelethink of it this way, when you die or lose games, mistakes were made 😊 if you have the luxury of recording your gameplay and watching it back you can find some big issues in your own gameplay. Just think:
Did I die to positioning error, or mechanical error?

(6800XT)
@@EthicalAllelemight wanna try the tool and has for doing it.
With ddu it bugged unable to install new drivers until the AMD cleanup solved it
@@LPgmxDan I have never had any issues using DDU. My core i3 has integrated graphics and it barely runs at 30fps and it freezes constantly

You mentioned "infamous stuttering" at the end. For my friends and I, it happens quite often when using the AWP's scope.
Yeah, I stutter anywhere from a tenth to a quarter of a second when I scope in with the AWP, scout, AUG, or Sig. Tried changing a bunch of settings, mainly anti-aliasing, but nothing seems to fix it.

Just be careful with your tech ❤

btw you have to remember a lot of cs players are from Eastern Europe and a lot are from Latin America.
It's a fact Windows is bloated and only gets more bloated

Using a fairly new CPU from Intel is the problem with this test. The game is a way to single Core to think that the threads can make a big Diference. Even the new thread reaper has problems playing cs2(bellow 60fps)

Hardware threads refers to hyperthreading - and that really does use CPU hardware to achieve parallelism within a single core
Multithreading is a programming concept, where you use many threads (potentially hundreds) to achieve something. CS2 almost certainly uses many threads, but ideally your CPU has 4 hardware threads across two cores to dedicate to the more busy threads
thanks mr minecraft
how does it achieve parallelism within a single core?
@@vibaj16 the idea is a core will have two schedulers processing two different instruction streams that use the same cache
If one of the instruction streams stalls (accessing memory that is far away in cache or even RAM) then the other instructions stream can continue executing whilst the other is stalled
There's some even lower level concepts, like when areas of the core go dark for one instruction stream the other can use it, so if one stream is doing a floating point calculation the other can do some integer math
being a fan of 3kliksphilip is like playing cs2 on a 4 thread cpu with a radeon 260x

@3kliksphilip my game becomes unresponsive every few rounds and i have to win+tab for new desktop to open the task manager and end cs2 processor to close the game, i found if i removed launch options the game would only blackscreen once a game (better than every few rounds) but this is driving me crazy cause i never have any other issues with any other games. i did a bios update, graphics card update, reinstalled cs2, reinstalled windows10, tried cs2 on another computer on the same network (no blackscreen freezing)
specs: i3-4160, gtx 1050, ddr3 12gb, 512gb hdd.
the game is playable its smooth i get an avg of 119 fps on 1920x1080p but my issue lies with the constant blackscreen freezes.
ok, just for the sake of it, I'm one of the people that did experience the stuttering as well as constant crashes and freezes ever since cs2 launched, never had that in csgo.
My friend plays on a surface pro, csgo he would get 30-60 fps. Cs2 he gets 12-20.
100%. It's a shame more people are not bothered that CS:GO was replaced.
Average overwatch moment.
