5 yrs later and your video is still helping people. My wife and I at 70 her 68. Just replaced our 15’ awning thanks to the clear directions and great video. Other video ppl would stand in front of the camera 😩. Great job. Thanks for taking the time to produce this. We also purchased from your link. 👍🏻
Excellent video! We just replaced our 16’ awning and used this video as a step-by-step tutorial. After watching all the way through, we started it over, watched a step, pause the video perform that step, and continued this way until the project was complete. Thanks for posting this!
Such a great video. I followed your instructions and my wife and I did it in just over an hour. Glad I didn’t pay to have it done. Thanks for making the perfect video
Thank you so much for this video! Did not know about your company, but I will make sure to tell everyone I see at campgrounds about you. You helped so much we will literally look for people that need an awning and tell them about you. Next time I need one I will get one from you! Again thank you, my wife and I were able to do this in an hour and a half!
It is impossible to imagine better thought out or better produced installation videos! The video, the camera positioning, sound, editing, and narration are always FIRST CLASS! 100% professional! I wish every installation video was this professional! Even though I may not actually do the install myself, it is incredibly useful to understand the mechanics of the product through your fantastic video! Great job and MANY MANY thanks again!
Just used the method described in this video to replace the 18’ awning fabric on my toy hauler. Great instructions and it only took about an hour. Great video, guys.
I did not have assistance when installing the awning fabric on the RV. I rolled the fabric the long way and folded it in half. I carefully climbed the ladder with the awning over my shoulder. Getting the awning started was the hardest part, but once it started it slid down the track easily. I went from the rear of the RV as I had better ladder positioning. Once all the way on I cleaned the track and removed the old fabric as I went. I spent several hours worrying about how I would get it done, and about an hour actually getting it done. Yes, it would be nice to have had help but just doing it myself made my day complete.
Great video. My end cap was a little different. Had to pin it from the side instead of from the front. No biggie. Took myself, my wife, and 12 year old an hour to replace my 14'. This video is priceless!! Also, thanks for the discount code!
A very informative video. My wife and I replaced our awning in under 3 hours. The only issue we had was when winding the spring it would not stay wound. It didn’t matter if the lever was in the roll up or roll down position. We simply added another pick on the right side too.
Great video! My buddy & I picked the hottest day of the summer (so far) to replace the our awning. Took a couple of hours for each one, but saved a lot of $$. Thanks for the clear, step by step I instructions. Even though our awnings were a little different, your video made it do-able; great job!
This is a great video guys, thanks so much for doing it. I do most of my RV maintenance myself and have been delaying the replacement of my “well worn” awning because of the strong springs and cumbersome work involved. This video is great and has reassured me that it’s not as hard as I thought it would be. Thanks!!
EXCELLENT would not have tried it without this video. One comment and one tip. Where it says "now would be a good time to replace the worn strap," it could have added " Now IS the time to insert the strap." TIP find the caption text, copy it to Google Docs, edit it out the general comments and number it as steps. Although we watched the video many times, it was great to have the notes. We hand wrote them... knew there had to be an easier way.
Funny story: while we were trying to get the awning back in order after some wind damage (but while the wind was still a factor), the pull strap picked that very moment to break away from the drum. Lesson learned.
That was the best RV instructional video I’ve watched in a long time!! Every detail recorded. No steps missed and explained- all demonstrated! Thank you!
I never post anything, but had to make an exception here... Great how-to video! It saved us some money by not having to hire the local RV repair shop to do the work (plus they couldn't have gotten the RV in to do the job for weeks!) We watched the video this afternoon and then replaced the awning on our Class A motorhome this evening. The job turned out to be pretty easy to do, considering I didn't have a clue how to do it prior to watching this video. Way to go guys. Great job!
Thanks so much for taking the time to write, Mike! It's always great to hear we've been helpful, and we're so happy that your install went smoothly. Safe travels!
Passing along my thanks ! We just did our 2002 Dometic awning. A few differences for sure, but this vid gave a great general guide. Ours was 17 ft, so we did have some difficulty rolling it back up to the arms, a 3rd person ended up helping to keep things in control. Looking forward to our first trip this summer sporting the new awning !
THANK YOU so much for this video. We had to replace our awning this week and we used this video as the tutorial. We went with a different fabric, but everything else was SPOT ON! As you said at the beginning, this is a completely manageable job. It only took use a couple of hours and the end result look amazing. Well done!
My wife and I are senior citizens, and we replaced our awning today. It took three hours, but we had pre-existing hiccups to work out. A sudden wind storm ripped our awning in two, which left our tension springs in the "extended" position. I released tension from both ends, and started fresh. This video helped "de-mystify" the situation. We only made one mistake...we forgot to install the pull down strap before rolling up the awning and setting it in place. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.
I carry the Little Giant® ladder and you'd be surprised how many times it gets borrowed at campgrounds. Great for getting on the roof. I have changed awnings before with just my wife to help. I agree that it would definitely help having a third person to help. The labor cost for changing them can be over half the cost of the awning alone, so great DIY video.
We have both a little giant as well as a telescopic. The Little Giant has to stay at home base due to our limited storage space on the trailer. Much prefer the stability of the Little Giant.
@@littlehouseofbig2138 Yea, I know. We now have a diesel pusher with a lot more cargo capacity than our trailer ever had, plus it's just the two of us now.
Thanks for making this! We ran into a couple bumps along the way that stretched our install to about 4 hours, but we got it done. This video definitely made the process easy to understand.
Great video! I did install mine by myself in 4 hours .lots of breaks and figuring out how to tackle the next part alone. It is possible, but I wish I had a second person without question. Pay attention to the small details. Like trimming the cord before installing on the tube. That took 30 minutes of cutting in place to rectify my mistake. Silicone spray was a god send!
Thank you for helping the Morton's with this task! We're doing this task ourselves in the coming weeks and it's updated video will be very helpful! Thank you for all you do!!
Ours was a little different but similar. Followed your method and worked out perfect. Started by getting all tools ready and followed every step. Thanj Ben Canada
I did the same thing, except remounting the tube. I didn't roll it up, but brought the arms down and put the drum in the arms with the awning rolled out. That was far easier than climbing up the ladder with a loaded tube. Then, after spacing the awning, rolled it up to adjust. Worked out better for us old men that way.
thank you for this fantastic video. My husband and I did this in a mind blowing FULL day. "Why?", you may ask. Rusted screws. My 2007 awing was never replaced. It took one hour to remove the first set of rusted screws. If you note that you have rust on your screws, add penetrating oil and time to your list of items to have handy. The best method that worked for us was penetrating oil, hit screws with a hammer (both sides if possible, and take a screw driver and hit under the screw head at an angle so that you are working in the space between the screw head and the main surface. When removed most of the rust adhesion seemed to be under the screw heads. This takes TIME. Be patient - we did not strip screws but that would have been another headache Other problems we encountered. 1) The pin, for keeping spring in place on the L side of the awning, I used was a small file for sharpening chain saws (I believe). The handle broke off as we were stepping the old awning down. I recommend using a nail or a cotter pin. That's what we used later in the process and with much more success. 2) Did I mention rusted screws? I have a Carefree Colorado and they use screws - not rivets on the awning arm where the spring is. As I was unwinding the spring, the one surviving screw (we did not notice that there was only 1) broke. That added a lot of spring adjustment time at the end. But hey, we learned a lot. 2) Our awning had never been replaced and cutting the old awning cord was a lesson in patience. 3) Add time to go to the hardware store to find replacement screws. I did not want to put rusted screws back on. We debated using a wire brush, but............. Chose the safer method. 4) Awning handle keeps falling off. We haven't resolved that yet. The rivets are not holding. 5) Sigh, there seems to be a funny kind of cotter pin that is on the top part of the awning arm. I don't know what it is or how to put it in. It is up and currently kinda functional. We just need to find solutions to the last 2 issues.
You guys are the bomb! We were completely clueless on how to purchase and install a new awning for our little 22ft hi-lo RV. This video took us straight from how to measure width for purchase of awning to complete install. Removing the tension was intimidating but we just played the video and watched at intervals during the install and it worked perfectly! Took us about 2-3 hours to install. And one tip from us ... the awl we bought was way too big. Tried a pick which was also too big. Not sure if they make different diameter ones or not. We ended up using a hex wrench instead of an awl or pick and taped it into place with duct tape. Also, we had two awning anchor screws (not one)... so check that too!
My wife and I changed ours in about 90 minutes. HOWEVER.... After removing the tube ends from the supports and starting to unroll the awning, I was on the side with the pin in the end cap. Rather than holding the tube I grasped the end cap. The tube twisted a little, removing tension on the pin (a very small screwdriver) and sure enough it fell out. I was stuck there having to hold the tension of the cap and not able to reach the screwdriver on the ground. It was an "interesting" situation having to ask a kid walking by to please hand me the tool... All in all it worked out. Thanks for the great instructions.
Followed these directions pretty much verbatim and had the new awning material installed in under two and a half hours. The only issue I had was with the spring mechanism on the left side. Didn't get the awl in correctly and it managed to unwind itself. But I added the same amount of turns back in as I did on the right side and the awning pulls down and retracts just fine. Thanks for the awesome video. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to take this project on.
Great video. My buddy and I were able to replace the awning on my camper in about an hour (including time spent watching and rewinding to make sure we understood the instructions).
I saw Tom and Kate’s video with you guys doing this exchange of the fabrics. Something you can try next time on an old school manual awning is take the flap from a cardboard box and cut it off. The longer ones work best. Place it between the inner and out arm and close the arms on it. This is a safe gentle way to center the arms exactly where they need to be. Also looks like there awning could stand be be adjusted up one hole higher on the stops. Loving what I’m see. I used this method my self to change a fabric last week at work with no help from anyone.
Great Video, I had bought a replacement awning for my trailer a couple of years ago but was a little hesitant to take this project on. After watching your video I figured what the hell and gave it a shot today. Everything went great. followed your video step by step and everything went exactly like the video showed. Thanks for posting this, it was a huge help!!!
Love the outtake bloopers at the end! RV Geeks and The Morton’s together. That’s a winning combo! Thanks for a great break down of an intimidating project. I’m inspired!
@12:00 you say to have the hole for the bolt on the back facing the RV. I believe it faces away from the RV. I suspect when you rolled it up you had to flip it over just before @13:12 where the holes are facing away from the RV. Thanks for the video. Big help.
Thanks for this video, I got a new awning and I will be installing it in the spring time. I wasn't sure how it was done put this video is very clear. Thank you!
This video is great to assist with awning replacement. My model was slightly different but this helped tremendously. Overall from gathering of tools to completion took about 2.5 hours. Remember if you decide to swap to a new pull cord that you put the new one on before you rivet the spring back on. Ask me how I know. Otherwise had no real issues through this.
Yet ANOTHER awesome video! Like a dummy I drove out of my driveway with the awning still extended 🤦🏼♂️ Fortunately it only ripped the awning and the legs held up. Broke a bracket which can be replaced easily! Thanks RVGEEKS ❤
My Dometic awning is 25 years old and this process worked great. The only difference was on mine you insert a nail on the side of the left end cap to lock the spring instead of using a screwdriver to insert it through two holes as described in this video. Also, mine only had two rivets. Remember the end cap and spring mechanism are connected as one piece so once you remove the rivets just pull the end cap off with the spring. Great video.
Your instructions were perfect and made the replacement easy. I could not use a punch to "pin" the end cap as mine was flat and the pin hole was hard to get to. I used a common nail which held perfectly. My mistake was I forgot to remove the nail and it bent over inside the tube. I was able to cut the head off the nail and push the bent piece in to the tube. All is fine now. Thank you for your Video..
Great video, and thanks so much for sharing your wisdom! We've been putting off replacing our own slide topper awnings but you guys make it look so easy, what could go possibly wrong! Hah, just kidding, and funny outtakes. I can see how it's really important to do the prep work to help it go smoothly, lube spray, widening & cleaning the aluminum track/grooves, etc. And YES the RVGEEKSROCK! Great coupon code choice.
Another awesome video! I'm a new subscriber so I'll have to peruse your videos. Hopefully you'll have one that shows how to fix the frame when part of it is separating from the RV wall. That's the problem we've discovered on our camper.
Hi and welcome! Great to have you here with us. Sorry to hear about your situation. We don't have a video about that, but our friend Brian of RV With Tito did one about delamination. That might be what you're looking for. Here's his video. Hope it helps: ruclips.net/video/XVnzgn5ygaA/видео.html
I used this video today on an older (2005) roadrunner with the original awning in really bad shape. I’d say it was at least 95% the same as mine. Only difference was the hole to stop the left hand spring was hidden under the old wire of the awning, only found it after I took it off and drilled out the plastic bead. Overall a very helpful video, took me about 3 hours with 2 guys.
Great Video, I was going to follow it ran into a big problem. NO access hole for AWL on left end of roller, couldn't lock that spring. I would love a response
Hi Norman! A couple of things.... First, can we confirm that you have the same make and model we used for demonstration in this video (the VERY popular Dometic/A&E manual pull-down awning.... model 9000)? If that's the same one you have, the next thing to look for is the hole itself. It's very small, and can be hard to spot. If you've rotated the roller slowly, looking looking for that hole, and are sure there isn't one for the awl, the next thing we'd suggest is to release the tension on the spring instead of pinning it. You'll need a vice grips, and you can carefully follow the instructions on page two of the repair manual. Here's the link. Hope this helps! Please let us know how you make out. www.rvrepairmanual.com/manuals/awning_replacement_instructions.pdf
Great instructional video. I screwed up. I didn’t have the vise grip tight enough, the spring unwound and I didn’t get the rotation count. Any suggestions on how to get the tension correct on the spring? Thanks in advance, Steve.
Great video, had no helper and was able to replace a 16' Awning using your technique. I would prefer a helper, but a couple of suggestions if you have to go it alone. I was able to "push" the the top bead all the way through (Use silicon as suggested in video.). On the tube beads, I set the left end of the tube (1/3 from end) on the bottom run of a step ladder and slid the bead in just like the video showed (Silicone). Also have to put a step ladder in the center to roll down and roll back up. You can set the rolled up awing on top of the RV and then climb up there to position the end caps. Thanks again!
We just updated that old video to direct people here to the new, improved way. This was so much easier! Thanks to Tyler at Tough Top for the updated instructions.
The crossbar on the A makes all the difference. ;) About those hats. They've both been washed a few times. If you air dry them brim down on a flat surface, like an oven rack, the brim will be less wobbly. Jon in rural BC, Canada
That's a great point about the A, Jon, since without the horizontal part, it would indeed be a V! Those are our ratty old work hats, so we think they're pretty much beyond help! LOL

We're so happy to hear our video was helpful! Thanks so much for letting us know, and for sharing your own tips based on your experience.
The step by step you go through helped out so much. Can't say thank you enough.
So great to hear! Thanks for letting us know. 😊
You guys make it look so easy. My awning is due for replacement so this video has been very informative.
Awesome! Great to hear, Kevin.
Perfect timing for me as the awnings are for for replacement right now. Thanks.
Thank you so much for this video. I was able to complete this project thanks to your efforts.
Great to hear, LouAnn!!
Great video. My buddy and I were able to replace the awning on my camper in about an hour (including time spent watching and rewinding to make sure we understood the instructions).
Thanks for letting us know, Mark! Glad it helped. 😊
That is so awesome to hear, Jonathan! Thank you so much for letting us know. It's always nice to hear we've been helpful. 😊
Love the outtake bloopers at the end! RV Geeks and The Morton’s together. That’s a winning combo! Thanks for a great break down of an intimidating project. I’m inspired!
Thanks Gypsy! You can do it too! 😉
Great job! I’m sure Tom & Katlyn appreciated your help and experience. Safe travels 😊🇺🇸
Thank you Janice!
@12:00 you say to have the hole for the bolt on the back facing the RV. I believe it faces away from the RV. I suspect when you rolled it up you had to flip it over just before @13:12 where the holes are facing away from the RV.
Thanks for the video. Big help.
You have the best friends, Mortons on the move!
We think so too, Mitchell! They are awesome. 😊
@@RVgeeks Tom is so easy on the eyes!
Great video. Very easy to follow the instructions.
Yet ANOTHER awesome video! Like a dummy I drove out of my driveway with the awning still extended 🤦🏼♂️
Fortunately it only ripped the awning and the legs held up. Broke a bracket which can be replaced easily!
Thanks RVGEEKS ❤
Ouch! So sorry to hear. We have all accidentally created self-inflicted wounds from time to time and they are the worst. Glad it wasn’t more serious.
It takes a big man to admit that! My Dad drove our rv under a hotel portico when I was 15 and cleaned off the roof 😂😂
Thanks for the great video, the three of us knocked this job out in around an hour.
Nice! Great to hear. Thanks for letting us know. 👍😄
Thanks for the great video it made the task easier than I thought it would be. Well done!
So great to hear, David! Thanks so much for letting us know.
Awesome recovery Fred! 👊👍🙌
It was as easy as you guys made it look. Thanks for this video!
Awesome step by step instructions. In australia… hopefully that all same here 🙌. Thx
Great demonstration...
You guys are great so much fun doing this project with you! Great video and thanks for all the help :) Love the bloopers at the end. ;)
Thank you for being such great sports about making them extra fun! We had a blast, and are ready for our next collaboration tomorrow! 😁
Thanks this video gave me some great information I used when changing my Awning.
Your video was extremely helpful ... thank you very much !!!!
Thanks for the video. I'll go through it a few times before doing the install. 😉👍
Thank you so much! But we’re far too modest to choose a code like that.... but honored that Tyler from Tough Top Awnings did! 😄
Great tutorial. The awning you took off was way better than mine is now. Need to update.
Thanks for sharing this video
Followed this video and got it done no problem. Thank you
Excellent!
Another great video from two great guys keep them coming
Thanks
Thank you so much. You just made our day. 😊
This was very informative. Thank you.
What a sweet dog, just laying there!
Thankyou for a very detailed video
Great video. I recently replaced mine by myself without unwindind and disassembly of springs. Seemed pretty easy I made a video
Tyler from Tough Top Awnings shares some tensioning tips in this video: ruclips.net/video/tIj6GdLMOBM/видео.html
Looks easy enough! Thanks again.
Thanks for the additional tips, Henry!
Thanks for sharing, this is a much easier process. I’ve gone through this twice with a 28 ft awning, the prior approach was s challenge
We just updated that old video to direct people here to the new, improved way. This was so much easier! Thanks to Tyler at Tough Top for the updated instructions.
Great made vedio, very informative. Thank you.
Such a wonderful video thank you kindly
Less fluff, more substance. Thanks you
Great video and thank-you, its a pity that after replacing a new awning that you did not CRC the spring as it looked rusty . Many thanks
Very informative . . . as always . . . and as a bonus, I learned what to do with the chin-strap of a similar hat I own.
Bonus material!! 😁 Thanks Scott!
The crossbar on the A makes all the difference. ;)
About those hats.
LOL
Great video! Thank you
Nice, like the new tip, may try that this weekend. Much safer looking!
Yes a new video rv geeks. Im a big dutch fan🇳🇱🇳🇱👍
Thanks, Joey!
