Replacing LCI Motorized RV Awning

- #ilovervlife #rvawningreplacement #LCIawnings After 6 years, our RV awning had seen better days. From beating it up at the beach along with a constant battle with tree limbs, the RV awning stitching busted pulling a 10 foot section away from the side of the 5th wheel. We could have taken down, had it stitched and replace, but the fabric was getting fatigued and we didn’t think much life was remaining. We felt the rv awning install would not be that difficult and found a good quality replacement awning.

Gotta give you props. Doing a task with family with patience and constructive guidance. Oh we would of had a lot of pirate language with my family. Glad to find out this can be done at a lower cost. Thank you!
Thanks Amber. It was the engineer coming out. There was a lot of laughing going on, but some of the silliness out.
Sir, thank you so much for taping this. I started out in the complete wrong direction. You helped us like you can’t believe. Hard to find an exact video for our brand. Thanks again.
Glad we could help Scott. Appreciate you watching our channel.
JERRY YOUR THE BEST HERE. LOOKED ALL OVER RUclips FOR THIS FABRIC REPLACEMENT AND IT IS LOADED WITH THE NON-MOTORIZED INSTALLS. THIS IS THE VIDEO I NEEDED. THANKS FOR TAKING TIME TO PRODUCE/SHARE THIS. AS ALWAYS LOVE YOU AND YOUR WIFE'S LAID BACK STYLE. RETIRED OVER THE ROAD TRUCKER HERE AND "SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY" IS THE BEST.
Thanks so much Seymour. Great to hear you’re enjoying the channel, our presentation style, and finding our videos helpful. Great appreciation for the long haul professionals. Stay safe. Jerry...
My motorized awning had a spring!! Caused injury to husbands hand. Feel responsible as I was the one that found your video. Several things you did made it so much easier so for that thank you! But need to say some motorized awnings DO have springs for your followers safety.
Sorry that happened. Yes, this was for an LCI awning. A good idea to check the manufacturer documentation for other models.
Great job ! When our awning needs replacing think we will head to Georgia for vacation. lol
Thanks. You’ll have a great time. Mountains and coast all wrapped up in fun.
I love your RV how to videos. Sure helps me out with our RV. I have wondered how replacing one of these awnings was on the difficulty scale. Thanks for sharing.
Easy Breezy. Glad to share.
Awesome job Jerry thank you very much.
I’ve changed one before just kind of forgot the ins and outs.
What I’ve taken away from this it’s amazing how a family can work together and father husband can be so kind and your words talking to their family. Why can’t the world be just like this enjoy.
Thanks so much for the kind comments. Great to hear you found the video helpful.
It would have been even easier if you had slid the awning fabric into the track on the RV first and then with the fabric hanging down the side of coach, slid the roller onto the fabric last
Thanks fort the tip Don.
Need to look at the LCI video from 3 years ago. She shows how it’s done without removing the heads & all the work you went through.
Heads don’t have to be unbolted or removed. Just the roller.
Good Job jerry......
Thanks Ron.
I worked with lci customer service on awning issue they were great to work with , made me believe in a business again.
Great to know Gary. It's been a good awning system with much use. 6 years and going strong.
@@iLoveRVlife they actually sent me a replacement motor as mine didn't pull up tight enough , I had to send some pictures but objective evidence is a good thing to prove something. Happy traveling to you.
Great job and the best part is all that money you saved!
Thanks Carol.
Joan is supervising the job.
And a great job she did!
Nice presentation and job getting that done. Mine are starting to wear pin poles so the inevitable replacement is around the corner. I’m not as reluctant to take the job on now that I’ve seen how you did it. Thanks for taking the time to make the video. Happy Camping!
You bet Brad. We faced the pin holes too. Ours last another year when that started then the seams let go.
Thanks for video on replacement awning. It don't look to bad to change.
You bet. Not to bad with a few extra hands in the mix.
Awesome Jerry! Glad you posted that! It looked easier than I thought! I just helped my Dad change his mechanical awning and they tend to be more of a pain! Thank god for RUclips!!
Thanks
That looked too easy Jerry! Great job 👍🏻 The most amazing part is there were no “ouches” or “dang it's”. Lol! Love your videos my friend! ~DC
That’s a bunch DC. Part of the task is taking your time and those few extra hands to help. Appreciate you watching the channel.
Great video, now I feel way more confident that I can do it myself now.
Thanks Brian. Glad we could help.
I think they go through the material with the capture screw so the awning does not go slack during temperature changes. (and after a wind event) Great job. Not looking forward to the day I have to do one. And yes we will do it for the labor savings!
Maybe. I used the set screw next to the poly cord. We’ll see if will hold.
It looks a lot easier than I thought it would be. Great Job.
Thanks Tim. Yeah for the ilovervlife team on this one!
How ironic. I’ve been patching on my awning since last year and it also ripped from my camper when I pulled it out last week. Have a replacement coming Tuesday. Lol. Must be the season for awning replacement. Lol. Hope you and Joan are doing well. Good to see you guys out and about. Take care and be safe
Thanks John. Great to be traveling again. Tis the season for awning replacements.
Great video thanks. Mine pulled out exactly like yours did away from the trailer. I replaced one before on my old trailer it was a manual awning so it was a real hassle. I actually did it myself it was a lot of stress I won't do that one again. But I have a new trailer that's electric so I will give it a shot. thank you
Glad we could share.
I always thought there was a spring in the roller......I'm sure my day is coming to replace mine...great info!
Not on this model. Definitely on the manual awnings.
Yup only on manual models. I'm due for a new canopy and have done great research on the replacement. Now to get competent help like Jerry had is another thing.
Thank you for being so detailed in your directions. Gives me confidence when we need to replace our awning.
Glad we could help.
I need to do this one our used camper we grabbed!
Not to hard with a couple of extra hands.
@@iLoveRVlife its easier because we don't have to fight the springs... I wonder if we did the camper 1st, 5hen walked the bead on last?! Thanks for the vid
I’ve tried both. About the same. If you don’t have a way to set the roller on something to keep level, the camper side would work better.
Thank you for the helpful video. I wasn’t sure the best way to approach the motorized awning replacement. This video told me exactly what I needed to know. Thanks again for taking the time to share this. Happy trails.
Glad we could help.
You made it harder than it needed to be to do that job. Work smarter not harder.
Good job guys you made that look easy.
Thanks Tim.
Great job, as usual! I can think of several things to do with the old awning fabric! Bet you can too!
Thanks Scottie. Thought about some kinda recycle, but it was really beat up. Sent it off for a long awaited rest.
I’m planning on doing this next weekend and I can already see a divorce and a pissed off son coming soon 😆 Thanks for the video!
Glad to help. Wishing the best. Maybe a good steak dinner afterwards will heal all wounds.
Awesome project Jerry! Y'all made it like so easy. Great video as always blessings to y'all Jerry and Joan!
Thanks. This was interesting. Was surprised how easy.
Thanks for the video, We'll be doing this soon. Happy Camping!
Thanks
You made that look easy.
Wasn’t to bad Bryan.
Great video. You made it look easy!
Thanks John.
I feed the top first then 2 can pull the bottom roller on Much easier. and quicker.
Good tip. Thanks
Well done family 👪👏.
Thanks Brad
Thank you Jerry!
Great tutorial
Always Emily
Best video yet!!!! Great job!! Thank you for everything you teach me!! That was awesome!!
Thanks a bunch Scott.
Wow! Looks great! Looking forward to when y'all can get on road. See ya out there!
Thanks Henry. Safe travels.
WOW! Fantastic job Jerry. I knew if any body could do it, it would be you. Wish I were there to help you I would definitely do it. And the price was mind boggling to. :)
No kidding Ty. Thanks a bunch, would have been great to have you along.
Nice video Jerry, I have had to do a couple and I always roll them up and leave some excess then put it on the top and slide it down that way. Either way not a bad job.
Thanks and great tip.
Good video made it look easy glad to see you posting again!
Thanks a bunch. Glad to be at it again.
Hi Jerry , well done!
Thanks Alan
Merry Christmas 🎄 and Happy New Year 🎆
Great video. I am having an issue with the grey piping you pinched with the screws. It has started to work itself out I’m going to try and work it back in and pinch it as well.
Thanks. If the track is a little large. Cut a piece off the end of the poly cord about an inch long and lay the 2 one on top,of,the other, the add the screw. It will give extra compression on the poly cord.
I have the other problem where I ran under a tree in our yard and the awning stopped while the camper kept being pulled, so my arms are all bent. I will be able to use much of what I learned here to remove the awning and roller and then replace the bent arms. Thanks. PS, if camper places want $1000 bucks to do this, maybe you and your son could do a few on the side to save folks some money and use the money for you RV travel fun. I'm sure your son could find a way to spend some extra money too.
Thanks Phil. Would be great to help others with a side business, but current work keeps us both pretty busy. Not to work though, there’s always more tips and travel videos planned.
Great info. One question. Why didnt you put the camper side on first?
Thanks. Not sure I follow the question. Camper side?
@@iLoveRVlife probably because I'm using all the wrong terminology. Camper side being the camper wall itself instead of the motorized reel. From a layman's view it would seem to be easier to thread the reel second.
Got the question now D. It may have been a simular process. The roller is bulky and we wanted to make sure all was centered and fastened. That seemed to be the easier task on the ground.
I just replaced the one on my rv last week wasn't to bad with my son
You guys are awesome :) Happy Camping
Thanks a bunch Michael.
Nice, Good job
Thanks Tim.
Thank you so much for sharing
You bet!
Great information as usual
Thanks Rebecca.
As always a great video with a ton of good info! Thanks for all you do!
You bet. Always.
Thank you so much:):)
Great to hear you found the video helpful Bill.
Some closeups of what you were doing when sliding the fabric into the roller and disassembling the end caps and motor would have been real helpful. Overall a pretty good vid.
Thanks
Had wind catch my rear arm and bend it. Had to get a larger rivet gun to put new rivets in.
We’ve seen several blown over the top of a camper.
put fabric in the top first and the bottom, last. installing the fabric a he ground is much easier and safer.
Thanks for the tip.
Can you remove the 1 screw each end of the tube that holds the rod in place?
If you’re referring to the rod that holds the awning in the roller slot, you can.
Hi Jerry... I'm a newbie .... I've just come across your video looking for how to fix a motorized awning that wont opened. Last fall I was in a rain storm couldn't get it closed fast enough .... After the storm they had to lift & pushed it in as it motored in and it closed.... Now I am on the road ..... Thought I'd try to see if it would open and it's not get any suggestions? I am staying in a RV Park in South Carolina... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated....
I’d check to make sure there’s voltage going to the motor. Maybe the obvious, but make sure the fuse hasn’t blown. If not, wiring with a volt meter at the motor. If you see 12 plus volts, suspect the motor died. Our motor fried after first year of travel.
Ladder safety with the plywood under leg of ext. Ladder
Thanks
Is there a specific type of awning to purchase? We have the same motorized one you have but all the replacement awnings i'm finding online say "fits awnings that are manually operated without a metal cover". HELP PLEASE!
We didn’t have the metal cover and was able to use the one shown on the video. Due to time, we were able to order the exact width (side to side), but the length (extended from side of RV) was a little longer. Hasn’t been an issue and we were able to meet our time crunch. If you need feedback on an exact replacement, contact etrailer.com. You can call their customer service and they are knowledgeable about replacement parts. You’ll pay a little more compared to Amazon, but get the added service if needed. We’ve used them for other products and they’ve served us well.
How did you choose your replacement awning fabric? I had read good reviews about Tough Top awning fabric. What are your thoughts.
Thanks for the great videos. You make projects look easy and doable.
Glad you love RV Life.
Thanks Tom. Bit of a roll of the dice on this one. Had to make a quick decision based on price, reviews and shipping time. The thing ripped 2 weeks before we planned to head out. Didn’t know this brand, but the specs and reviews were good and I could get in 4 days with Prime. Good fortune shined and looks to be a good choice. Interesting finish vs the canvas style for the one removed. We’ll see how it holds up over time.
@@iLoveRVlife it does look great. I do understand about needing it quick.
Do you know how to remove the led strip of lights from the rv awning? I want to put up a sunblock but the led lights are in the section to install it. Thanks
If the leds are in a slot and not permanently affixed to the roller track, they should slide out.
Thank you !!!!
Appreciate you watching.
im sure u know now that u did not have to take the entire head motor off of each end.... you will probably not have to do it again hopefully.... good job
Thanks
Great how to video! Are there quick connects for the wiring or do you have to cut the wires and use butt connectors?
Thanks Jennifer. Depends on who installed the awning and motor. Mine had connectors.
Oh man. I just drove off from my campsite with my awning left out. Just got a football field distance and caught just the edge of it on a sign. Bent the arms and pulled one side of each arm out from the RV. A company came in about 3 hours and took it off. I was just sick - almost wanted to throw up. I have a great check list so why did I miss it. I sure hope insurance helps me out.
Hate to hear that, but your not the first. I've stopped several pull off with the awning out. We have a detailed checklist and won't move an inch till its checked off. This might help. ruclips.net/video/kSDWLd7s5_0/видео.html
Jerry what’s worse that I didn’t mention in my comment is that I’m a pilot and have a departure check list. But did I use it. No. I said oh all I got out was the electric cord so I’m good to go. Ugh! Well I won’t make that mistake again. Let’s just pray it’s only going to be a $500 deductible. Love watching your videos.
Would it have been easier to tread the top first and then slide the roller on from the ground ?
Maybe. Still would be a bit of a wrestle moving the roller and sliding awning in the track without tearing.
@@iLoveRVlife Yeah , getting ready to do mine and just figuring out the easiest quickest way to get it done.
Thanks Jerry for the great video I too have a carefree awning that pretty much stays flat because it comes out over a slide out. I heard you mention the sun screen addition do you have any information on it and Is it something you would do again also is there something that attaches to the bottom
Hi Rick, we still have the SunSetter screen and use it when we need to block the sun. Here’s a video of the installation ruclips.net/video/_x4DHnShO6E/видео.html
I Love RV Life Thanks again for your posting I will have to measure my awning length
Great job !
Just curious as to why you picked that brand / type of awning fabric
Not much science in this one. Needed something quick, reasonable price, good Amazon reviews and a little good luck.
In Hindsight Probably would have been better to thread on trailer let hang down because its 8' and set up some horses then with aide of your people thread the roller part having them be able to walk and set on the horses and secure screws to keep awning in place
Good tip. Thanks
Your awesome! Great job! I'm a newbie. Just retired from military and bought a new 5th wheel. Is there a roadside service you recommend? Thank you in advance for any recommendation you may provide.
Thanks Tom. We’ve had Good Sam’s and used it twice for tire changes.
Thank you. Much appreciated!
Muddobbers aka yellow jackets
You didn't show removing the wires on connected to the roller.
It was to tight of a shot for the camera. Just a simple unplug.
I wonder if the use of bleach to clean awning caused the threads to deteriorate on the oild awning?
It’s so little bleach and is only on the awning for a very short period. Think after 6 years of heavy use, winds and sun, it had given us all it had.
@@iLoveRVlife Yes, you did get good use out of original awning.
Thx Jerry...This is my next project. Question: the tube has 3 slots. Do you only have to thread one through or are there 2 beads? Mine was slid off by another RVer and I can't remember how it was originally attached. And thanks for the tip on the SunWave
Hi Larry. Depends on the roller. Mine has several slots. Look at how it’s rolled next to the RV. Use the one facing the bottom.
@@iLoveRVlife - Thx Jerry
Hey Jerry...Just an FYI. I order the awning from SunWave for a 17 ft awing. We measured from center to center on the arms and it is 17 ft 1 inch. Ours is a TCI like your. The awning arrived from SunWave and after sliding the awning on it went right up to the edge of the plastic end caps. That did not seem right as yours has 2-3 inches on either side. So I measured it. 16 ft 4 Inches.. Contacted SunWave and they are sending a replacement..but I am not positive this will work. Maybe I should order a 16 ft???
I ordered the 16’. Would have liked to had a little wider, but wanted to make sure I didn’t overlap on the edges.
@@iLoveRVlife - And your awning arms are on 17 ft centers?
Watch “How to replace RV awning fabric on electric awning “ LCI girl
I'm hoping you can help me. I'm going to have to replace my awning as soon as it gets delivered, however I have separate issue with my awning. The motorized unit is extremely squeeky and actually got stuck. The black arms that move the awning in and out had been struggling to do their job. Any ideas on what could be causing this?
Could be a couple issues. I'd check the bolts to make sure they haven't been over tightened. They need to move free. Spray some dry lubes on each joint. You didn't mention if the awning is rolling up straight or wrapping uneven. If uneven, it adds stress to the motor and should be corrected. If all this doesn't correct, the motor could be failing.
I Love RV Life! thanks so much!
It appears to be rolling in fine. Only one side is creaky and appears to be struggling. I’ll do what you mentioned though.
Why didn't you just zip tie it from the top in the first place instead of using two sets of ties? Wow you made this much harder than it needed to be. Just remove the two set screws that hold the awning tube to the motor side and the idle side and the tube will just slide off the bearings. No need to pull the whole motor assembly.
Next time.
Now I know what not to do.
Thanks. Glad we could help.
