Josh, another reason many people open the awnings too quickly, is that many RV centers don't even know.
I've had an interesting amount of hate from both viewers and a few other dealers accusing me of making this up. Why I would spend my time fabricating such a story, recording, editing, and publishing is beyond me
But if you scan RV forums and facebook groups you'll see people reporting awning strut issues & folks telling them they can avoid the problems by doing what we've shown here. Learned this a while back from my techs and didn't realize it wasn't more common knowledge for several years
@@JoshtheRVNerd I can believe that; but you know, it seems no matter what you do some people will find issue with it. I was a tech for several years. You put out some good helpful videos, keep up the good work.

@@JoshtheRVNerd I will even add, that in colder temperatures, you should pause the awning a few seconds longer.
Hey Josh. I'm a fellow rv tech, and never thought of this, however if you compress the strut without it being on the awning and release it, the shock will go from full retract to full extend on its own much faster than I can make it do it while extending it on the awning. This makes sense in colder temps but I'm not so sure this theory hold up .?
Side note, I've been told by Jayco that the longitude model in your video here doesn't have an auto dump feature.

Those are gas charged struts. Take a new one and see how fast it extends. Your awning is literally being pushed by the strut, it's not pulling the strut out.
I agree. Some just don't know.
Yeah, all the electric motor does is roll/unroll the awning. It really only has any mechanical leverage when it’s retracting.

I did not know that. Thanks Josh. By the way we owned our first camper for 10 years before a tree fell on it and totalled it. Now at age 76 we are on our second camper., a little nicer and longer than the first and with a bump out that the first did not have. Much more comfortable and at 24'6" versus 18' for the first it still tows nicely with the half ton pickup, although now we use a load equalizer hitch.

Josh, I have watched hundreds of hours of RV videos. Whether from dealers, manufacturer reps or whomever, and No One has ever mentioned this fact. Crikey, you are such a wealth of RV information and how to and I'm gobsmacked how complete your coverage of RV how to's is. I did hear that info about a year ago and I completely forgot about it. Thank you for reminding me of that again. I have been guilty of putting my awning in too fast but will follow your advice from now on .
Thank you. I just replaced my old manual awning with a new power awning. The arm structure looks very similar to your demo. No one told me anything except "here’s the button" and "be careful not to roll it up backwards". Thank you again. I may just have to drive to Coldwater for my second camper.
And no one at the dealer where I got mine said one word about this, and always did a demo it full speed opening and closing with no stops. Thanks Josh!

My wife and I are going to be purchasing another RV soon and it's going to be a big one a Fuzion toy hauler for our Harley's the 419 is the one we like and if our local dealer here in Colorado doesn't have one when we are ready to buy we might just have to jump in the truck and hit the road in your direction.

Josh, I just replaced a gas shock on my Carefree awning due to the shock wearing out!! Here in Sacramento, CA could not find a mobile repair RV company that had ever replaced one...a new shock is rated at 150psi so it takes at least two people to replace the shock safely.

Thanks for the tip, our 2014 Jayco had a bad strut when it was new. We have a 2018 now with a different brand of awning, It goes out normal speed but when closing takes forever, I took it back to have it looked at and they said it was fine. I rarely use it for fear of not getting it closed if a storm or wind comes up fast.
I'm a new RVer and consider myself unknowledgeable to some extent but with time spent RVing I'm slowly learning. This bit of info isn't a "eureka" moment but unless someone can disprove it, use it ! Great little advise and that's exactly what I will now put in to practice ! Thanks !
I've been opening my awning in 3 stages slowly just thinking of the motor heating up. Now I find out I've been saving my strut also.

We bought our Jayco popup in the early 90's from Haylett. Several years later, we traded it in for a 24' TT at Haylett. Never had an issue with the RV's or the dealer! We've not gone from a Pop-up, to a travel trailer, to a Class C, and now we own a class A which we'll be selling this summer and buying a 5th wheel. The C and A were not from this dealer as we moved from Michigan to Ohio unfortunately, but retiring next Spring. Maybe we'll head up to Coldwater and take a look around! We most likely bought our trailers from your dad Josh.

I like that ours I can manually lower either one of the sides to let water run off so we don’t get the random noises of water dumping off or water dumping in our main walkway.

I’ve been doing this for years. Usually I do 3 or 4 short ones. I also do longer pauses in spring and fall when it’s colder

It's easier said than done because at the time just don't know what you just don't know.

1:49 I disagree with the explanation of the operation of the gas struts in an awning. Gas struts are sealed, no gas or air goes in or out of the strut. When retracting the awning, the strut piston moves in which further compresses the already compressed gas to provide pressure (force) to push out the awning, just like the lifting force of the struts on your manual SUV tailgate. The only thing happening is the gas in the strut is alternately being compressed or allowed to expand within the cylinder. When the awning gets too heavy with rain, the weight overrides the pressure applied by the struts and they compress part way back in and the awning tips down releasing the weight of the water so the struts can raise the awning again. Since the speed of the piston rod is very slow (it travels only 6 1/2" in the 30 seconds it takes to operate the awning, I don't believe that stopping has any benefit to the struts but it won't hurt them if you want to do it. By the way, be sure to stop part way for a few seconds when opening your manual tailgate! (sorry, I couldn't help that)

Two questions. If you pause extension of the awning for a few seconds like mentioned here when deploying the awning fully, should you pause retracting the awning on its way back in? Also if you have the awning dipped to one side or the other to allow runoff, should you correct the dip manually by pushing the arm back in place before retracting the awning?
IMO, yes, pause when retracting as well. The gas and seal are reversing the process similar to extending. No on adjusting the arms during retraction. The difference in gas pressures or differential will be minimal, as compared to those differential changes. However, adjusting the arms to be "even" wont hurt a thing, and could make a theoretical difference. Thoughtful question, thank you!
Great tip Haylet! ! Never heard this before. Maybe opening/closing our outdoor kitchen struts would have avoided replacement also. Another tip out dealer did tell us about... never run awning all the way out... just till valence drops down. It's beyond me why these don't have limit switches to avoid tearing the fabric/damaging the motor...

Thanks for these videos josh. Seems like the manufacturer would have figured this out and geared down the motors. Seems like pausing in the middle of a hydraulic stroke wouldn’t change anything for the rest of that stroke. I suspect the constant movement in windy conditions would have a greater effect on lifespan. But you can see from the thumbnail of my old RV I’m new to the world of electric awnings

Me too! It is actually our awning video he refers to, the gas strut on ours was broken since purchasing it brand new last February. Sad but true.

You're a day late and a dollar short! One of my gas struts started failing after 13 months. As slowly as an awning opens, I am surprised the pause is needed. I suppose they are quite different in design from others. Thanks for the tip!

Instead of AIR in those struts think NITROGEN not a big deal but cleaner than air air being about 81% nitrogen. Anyway the thing is there is a lot of VALVES in a strut and they work like a SPRING and a SHOCK ABSORBER just like the strut assists on a trunk or hood. But these take up a lot more force. Another thing is if you are going to leave your coach with the awning OUT DON"T!! a micro-burst of wind can really ruin a trip!! Been there, done that!!! I did add Carefrees Bluetooth control to my awning mines a 2016 I think most of the newer ones have it standard. Great add on! Keep up the great work Josh, Probably will knock on your door for my next RV!!

I have a new 2020 Gulfstream, the awning arm broke in heavy wind at the camp ground. The warranty took care of it. Same camp ground 5 months later the rain killed it. Back to the shop I go. Now I will open using this method. The crazy thing us all the other RVs awnings around us were perfectly fine, open and people sitting under watching the rain. Maybe mine was made my Ozark Trail. 🤯

Thanks Josh!! We just purchased our first camper and the dealer didn't really tell us much about operating anything let alone the awning.
I did not know that. I thought the engineers who make the motorized awning would have set the motor speed to compensate for the strut gas motion to happen while opening or closing the awning.
