Hey Amy & Chris - are you still out there? ~Captn' Ron
We are! We had to come back to the States and work for a bit. Damn that real life stuff! Heading back to our boat at the end of October and getting back to videos then, and more importantly, spending another few years exploring and enjoying our boat :)
Good to hear from You! Have been watching many of your videos lately - (we are way behind in your travel fun). Built our 50ft ketch over 21 years and have spent many winters in Exumas. Also have sailed in Caribbean a few times on other boats. I installed solar and wind-chargers a few years back and it was best investment ever on the boat. We are presently "on the hard" in NB Canada prepping for another voyage (not sure where yet) and am currently looking at buying and installing a water-maker and looking for info-especially from cruisers with experience on this subject. We may take a sneak-flight to DR this winter from wherever. Take care and keep the Cruzan in a safe place! @@AmyandChrisSailingRumTot
Wow, how cool! What an experience to build your own boat. Amazing. We definitely want to get a wind generator, it's on "the list" with about 50 other things we want to do, haha. Let us know if you get to Luperon during your trip, we will have to meet up!
Will do! I built the whole boat - hull, topsides, installed the alum masts, laid the teak deck, installed the Perkins 4-108, installed and wired all electronics, did it all and learned a bunch doing it. I bought the AirX 400 wind charger and installed it in 2001(its never had a problem xcept one broken carbon fibre blade when a bird struck it in a gale crossing from FL to Bimini). Bought a new blade off Cruisers Net at Georgetown for $15 ! Installed 2 big Kyocera solar panels on a 2-way tilting platform made of alum angle(can see any angle in 60 deg of horizon). Problem is I never start engine to charge batteries so I have to remind myself to start it to prevent rust. Boat has been in salt water since 1996 (26,000 miles so far) and engine has only 2,400 hrs. Still have original RayMarine GPS/Loran in wheelhouse and a Garmin 527x in cockpit Maybe we can install your solars? or an AirX ?
