    If any of you viewers were in any doubt. Take it from someone who basically lives at this track: Mr. Goose can WHEEL.
    I couldn’t be more impressed with how fast he learned that track. If you want to learn good steering technique and good lines. Watch this dude.

    I disagree with the statement that it's not really a daily driveable car. I think the Miata is AWESOME as a daily. I mean, what do you need for your commute? You usually drive alone, so two seats is fine. You can fit enough shopping into the trunk (or the passenger seat) for some shopping during the week, and do the big shopping on weekends, so that's fine as well. Even though it might not be luxurious enough for an 8 hour drive, it's not so spartan that you wouldn't survive one or two hours in it, even if you're spoiled. Throwing the top down and feeling the wind rush around you wakes you up better than any cup of coffee could, too. And best of all: You'll have fun on your way to work!
    The only point is you *gotta* have another car in your household for bigger shopping runs, or going on vacation, etc.
    But day to day? I wouldn't wanna drive anything else (at roughly that pricepoint, at least).

      @gtballou3968 6 лет назад +16

      Totally agree....I have a 2006 Sport, 6MT, that I got about six months ago. I also have a 2012 Ram crew cab 4x4, and I end up driving the Miata all the time unless I need the truck for something, and I live in Northern Virginia. Got some all season Michelins put on and I plan to drive it through the winter, unless of course it snows. I think Miata is perfectly livable as a daily driver. Now for those cupholders...

    • @Runoratsu
      @Runoratsu 6 лет назад +6

      @@gtballou3968 My 2014 is still wearing it's Michelin PS4's for a few more weeks, then it'll get reshod in its winter wheels again. I live on the edge of the Swabian Jura in Germany, and I've driven mine through heavy snow… it's possible, and actually fun if the streets aren't too narrow and steep and as long as there's not much traffic around. I didn't have such a good time on a few drives where steep uphill roads with a sideways angle weren't cleared, and I had to move up in a constant 20° drift, but other than that, it's all fine as long as you've put on a set of decent winter tires.

    • @gtballou3968
      @gtballou3968 6 лет назад +1

      Sounds like a beautiful place to live! A while back, we lived in Bad Kreuznach for three years and it was great! In fact, both of our kids were born in Germany....we need to get back for a visit. How is your Miata on the autobahn? I figure the engine would be screaming at 100mph.

    • @Runoratsu
      @Runoratsu 6 лет назад +6

      gt ballou Nah, it’s not the engine, but there’s a lot of wind noise especially from the window seals at above 90mph or so. Nevertheless, my usual travel speed, when I use the autobahn to go longer distances, is between 115 and 125mph. The Öhlins suspension I put on last year was the biggest improvement in that regard, too, it feels so planted now. But usually, I tend to keep to the smaller twisty country roads, they’re much more fun!

      The low power keeps the price down, for both the car and the insurance, then you can add more power if wanted. The least expensive and most raced car; however on a tight budget a go-cart or motorcycle are more smiles per dollar- just no roof, heater or air conditioner.

    This is the kind of premium content I crave. Great overview. One thing that might have been implied but maybe wasn't talked about enough is that the race car is purpose built for 60+ minute and endurance sessions. Where the stock MX-5 would turn into a wet noodle, the cup car is setup for absolute abuse and consistency lap after lap.

    It’s probably the most reliable production based racing car.
    Ginetta makes a similar race car, less than 900kg, roll cage, 6 speed dog box sequential, 165hp 2.0l NA., no abs no esc, no Power steering. Also the access to the engine and steel structure is extremely easy. They also have an optional mazds engine and transmission for street legal version . The car is like £35k +vat but the engines I don’t think are new instead rebuilt. This car is built from scratch as a race car and some versions are modified for the road whereas the mx5 starts as a good sports car but for the road then modified for racing so here’s where they get the cost and maintenance advantages

    MeisterR from UK makes the best suspension for Miata for only $999 in USA. CRD for road going car that can do AutoX and CRD+ for track level racing cars. Tuned suspension is very good on the road for daily driving. Comes with all features you can imagine on $2,000+ suspensions from other brands, such as mono piece billet aluminum body, etc.

      I don't mind the ND, except for the tablet that sticks up out of the dash.
      I like the later style NC and some of the colors that came on it.
      Happy they didn't make it into an SUV like the Eclipse ... ffs
      I'm not buying a mazda until they bring back the rotary. If you know how to care for them, they are reliable; if you don't, you rely on luck, hope, and prayers. They don't sell enough cars to have the budget to properly educate their dealerships to educate new buyers, or their mechanics.
      A rotary ND Miata RF without that tablet on the dash would strongly tempt me to purchase it over the BRZ if I was going for a new car. I don't think the rotary should be in all their cars though, its just a niche fun engine; but some new 20B in maybe special edition Mazdaspeed 6 would be pretty cool.

    A performance driving tip for ND/ND2 owners: Turn off the traction control! It kicks in way too early and will inhibit the rear wheels from doing their share of the cornering work. The resulting oversteer is fully controllable. No snap oversteer, even with TC turned off.

    The Club RF is basically track ready out of the box. The Club comes with the upgraded dampers that you were longing for, and some other improved suspension bits like a strut brace. It feels very planted on the street with the OEM Bridgestone Potenza S004's, and doesn't punish you over bumps either.
    Been daily-ing a 2020 Club RF and I honestly couldn't ask for a better overall setup.

  • @Dowlphin

    2:03 I find it sad that they use rust-prone parts beneath the dashboard just because you normally don't see it. Makes me worried that at some point something might actually rust loose. And might even create loose rust particles flying around.
    *Why are they even selling the Miata in Germany if they don't design the website for enthusiasts?? I Hate car/bike websites so much. They are harassment-/trolling-level usability*
    Miata 2.0 specs in USA: "181 hp @ 7000, redline 7500" - Miata 2.0 specs in Germany: "181 hp" - And you have to be an archaeologist to find even that, and if you don't have cookies activated, the website completely blanks on arrival. the US website is better in more than one way. Odd how the Euro site is made for dummies and the US site for intelligent people.
    ... Well, the whole passion idea goes out the window when I look at the available colors. So many shades of gray. A roadster cabriolet and no yellow! Geez, even the new Toyota MR2 was available in yellow. In Germany!
    As for MIata vs. S2000 ... Sorry, but none of the generations of the Miata appeal to me visually. They bore me to death. The S2000 appearance weirdly was called a bit too tame but I find it has the perfect balance of Japanese oldschool aggressiveness and loveliness. It is so much different than what I feel looking at the Miatas. The later Miatas look like BMW Z3 wannabes to me. All bulgy design. No interest in making it look lean and sleek.

    I recently bought a 2019 RF. I love it. It's a fantastic car to drive.
    Having owned an elise before as a DD, this has enough of that light happy feel to it without all the downsides like GRP issues, water leaks, etc.
    I am going to swap the suspension for something sharper, as the car is indeed way too soft from the factory.
    I ALSO have a whining transmission, so it will probably have to be swapped at some point.
    Also noteworthy is that the engine just makes a lot of top end noise. Aside from the obvious ticking from the GDI system, it just has little ticks and clicks coming from the head.
    It kind of sounds like a dicky lifter some times, especially when cold, but i have been told by other owners that that's just the way they are. Don't know if you've noticed it too?
    Maybe has something to do with the crazy thin oil they run (0w20), i'm sure thicker oil would quiet it down considerably.

      I have a 17 RF Club. On the 2nd trans, and I currently am having issues with 2nd gear, again, with the new trans.
      As far the oil. I have messaged a few cup car guys and the are using Castrol 5w-30 A3/B4 euro spec to deal better with heat and it has a better additive package. My in my 17 owners manual it states that 5w30 is suggested in certain countries. My presumption would be that they suggested 0w20 in the U.S. for fuel economy and emissions reasons.
      BTW, Check out Bisi Moto Engineering. He is working with Mazda R&D and has some solid data on oils as well.

    I’ve always enjoyed Mark’s videos and regard it as the proper American succession to Top Gear.
    His comments are insightful and discusses the finer points of driving and racing, a rarity these days as most channels focus on features and tech.
    The different facets and perspectives (weight distribution scales, underbody analysis, deep dives with manufacturer’s design engineers) helps discerning car buyers make the discriminating choices among favorites with more confidence, ie: 86 vs GTI vs s2k vs wrx.
    I for one leaned towards an 86 for the back seats but the comparison with the Miata shows an orders-of-magnitude difference in sophistication and materials used in the suspension. This revelation wouldn’t be possible otherwise without owning both, because whom among us would continue researching other cars after making the initial purchase, at which point it’d be too late.
    I’m glad to see Turbowski was jettisoned; that dialogue was painful to sit through and you needed someone on your level, a niche Mr Singapore seems to fill nicely.

    I love how gentle you answered the question s2000 vs Miata question from the straightpipe guys. Being a s2000 philosopher myself i can agree other cars come close to it. TBH I don't care if you smoke me in a Miata; because I know; you know you have to try hard to beat the S2k. And I know you know I dont have to try hard to smoke a Miata it's a natural consequence. Lol. The way the S2k hypnotizes it's owners is simply part of it's legend. Both cars are legends to a degree. But history knows more about the legend of the s2000 compared to the struggles of the Miata legend. 2 underdogs in competition is my fave type of fights. They fight to the end always. I'm on the S2k side. Honda holds a special part in my heart of hearts. I have no history with Mazda aside from trying to pick up a rx7 without getting buttraped overpaying. I hate that it's a negative experience because I think Mazda is a good small car company, where Honda is part of Japan's heavy industry which means Honda answers to nobody on how they want to run the Honda brand. Where Mazda has to answer to someone in the way they run their brand. One aspect of how I know I love my Honda's more than any other brand; it's a loyalty in the level of apple finatics.

    Seriously what other youtube channel does reviews as in depth as the gooseman with track feedback, street feedback, mechanical feedback, constructively critical design input..
    Such a stark contrast to the likes of most other channels.

    We get the 1.5 litre here in New Zealand it revs to 7.5 too and it's awesome not as fast as the 155 hp 2.0 for sure but way more engaging I've driven both and I'd have the 1.5 , but this Gen 2 will be the ultimate mx5.....oh except for my 91 lol

    We raced chump past two years in e36 race car and i share the surprise of a race car on track compared to street car. The full cage and halo seats kill your visibility and i have yet to settle into that. Especially when your out on track with 120 frickin cars at watkins glenn. Some people settle in and do well in traffic in a race car - it was a challenge for me. I enjoy both of your channels and you guys are a really nice ensemble together -three distinct complementary personalities. Do more! Savage you look like lex luther in the final thoughts opening. Redline on the ND 1.0 was conservative from the factory. Pretty much any tuner - myself included - bumps them to 7300. With exhaust and intake it changes the world above 4500 rpm.

    Can't get over how amazing that CUP car sounds. My 10AE has a Borla exhaust and has a similar tone when you ring it out.
    I had a smile on my face for this entire video. It's giving me motivation to actually finish my car and try out some events.
    I'm second guessing if I should add a Rotrex supercharger, and instead rebuild the engine back to stock for races like this (I did some suspension and bracing for the car, also removed a dead a/c unit, so I'm not sure if I would have to undo and restore most of that to make it worth).

      No, its been great. I drive it a lot too, but I don't really beat on it either. I bought my 2016 in Feb 2018 with 3,700 miles and it has about 19,600 as of this morning. I drive between Charleston, SC and Durham, NC every other week or so - mainly on 2 and 4 lane roads, I intentionally avoid driving on I-95. Mine was a Mazda Certified Pre-Owned so I have an added 12mo/12K basic warranty and a powertrain warranty up to 7 yrs/100K. So if anything happens I should be covered.

    Just bought a 2018 MX-5 GT but with Bilstein/suspension upgrades and limited slip diff -- it's everything that I expected and more! Put a set of Michelin X-Ice i3's on it and I will drive it in the winter; in Canada no less! I had a '74 Triumph TR6 back in the day and daily drove that thing summer/winter, so I guess I get to feel what it's like to drive again.

    I live in Florida, not in Canada....I could drive this everyday! Short of a bike rack/bicycle, everything else that is large can be paid to be delivered (or maybe put an ugly rack on top of the trunk lid to carry up to medium boxes).....But I would not have an issue because I also have an older, 2012 Kia Soul 1.6L, 6-speed manual with a huge hatch, which can carry a lot of stuff. I did own an old, used 1998 Miata and it was a lot of fun! The 'problem' that I have right now comes courtesy of a 2016 Camaro SS automatic, that is also a lot of fun! Thanks for the video!

      I plan on moving to Sweden and when I do I want to bring an ND with me....I am holding out on Mazda offering a manual steeri g rack option or a green paint option.....because those are 2 things I will have to have and I am not going to get both of those on the aftermarket....I am fine with doing one aftermarket....but if I have to do both that will add up to a lot of money
