A BMW built in the 80's, that still has 60's styling cues shining through, and handles and drives like a 70's Gran Turismo, with a plush and comfortable ride. A timeless, understated classic, yet highly addictive once you're behind the wheel.

@@elliottthompson4834 Thanks. Don’t have this anymore due to a collision that ruined it. I wish they still made these MazdaSpeed3s in the new shape but they don’t so I bought a GTI Rabbit last year. But I liked the speed a lot more. Anyways, waiting for the warranty to finish so I could mod it.

Anybody can do those comparisons, drive the cars and say the numbers and stuff but the the delivery is what makes or breaks it. Thomas and James do the perfect mix of actual substance and content with a video you actually want to watch even if you weren't that into cars.

I have a completely stock ND1, I was absolutely blown away how well it hung with the M3 on the straight, Granted yeah that's a High mileage motor but that's still extremely impressive for an ND1. Was not expecting it to hang that well at all on the straight.
I think the video made it look a little closer than it was... M3 is probably a little slower than it should be... but stock vs stock M3 is almost a second faster in the 1/4 and traps about 8-10mph more ... which is a pretty wide margin

@DC Williams It would wholly depend on how tight the track is. If it's closer to an autocross course, then yes the Miata might have a chance. A track with long straight aways and wide sweeping turns, the Mata would have zero chance.

Dude, you would think that Thomas says all that crap about the BMW just for the comedy, but nope. I don't own an E46, but I own an E36 convertible. Not even an M3, just a 28i with some mods, and... well, what Thomas says is just about right. Always something wrong, always something to do. The ND is a new Miata, but even NA Miatas are way less problematic even though they're also old. Just the rust. The damn rust. But in the end of the day, a BMW N/A inline 6 from the 90s and early 2000s will make you smile every day. I love my car, but it's not meant for daily usage at this age (even though I do use it almost every day when the weather is nice). I did drive Miatas, not the ND, but NA, NB, NC, with different engines, even drove an NB with a turbo and around 200hp. Of course, much fun, but a 4pot will never match the straight 6, and in a convertible, the sound of the engine is a huge factor of having fun. I drove many E36 and E46 convertibles (me and a friend of mine made a club in our country where we do car meets with only E36 and E46 convertibles), even a 320i with the 2.0 litre, not-so-strong 150hp, but still straight 6 engine makes you smile, even though it's actually quite slow. The character is all there, and for a spirited sunday drive, that's what you need the most. The V6-swapped Miata, Phil, from CarThrottle... now that's one I would try though, might fix the one problem I have with Miatas. The Miatas are also amazing to drive on twisty roads from the factory, they are light and the suspension is great. My Bimmer is not light. 1400+ kgs, with me in it, it's past 1500. But with a good suspension setup (which I have), it not only eats stock Miatas but GT86s as well. So yeah, there is potential and great fun to have in these old Bimmers, but be prepared for a shitload of problems. And they never really end. You can just have good times until the next issue.
Yeah, a K-swapped MX-5 would definitely be a mean project. The E30 is a legend at this point, and costs insane amounts of money to buy for what you get, but I did try many of them, and the E36 is overall a more enjoyable platform. More rigid (even though the E36 isn't the most rigid car neither), feels much more stable when driving on the limit. If we lived nearby, I would offer you to take a trip in mine. Around 225-230hp (never measured on a dyno, just guessing from similar setups), rev limiter @ 7200, fully rebuilt engine, M50 intake and some other mods, custom ECU. 315mm EBC brakes in front, Powerdisc + ceramic on the back. M3 suspension setup with strongflex bushings and mostly eibach parts. Pilot Sport 4S tires. Some modifications to the chassis to make it slightly more rigid. As a result, it can actually compete with the likes of the Toyota GT86. Awesome experience. Of course it cost me a ton of money to get it to this level, and also a lot of time (we made almost everything by ourselves with some friends, except for the ECU and the chassis stuff). Perfectly usable - although quite stiff, of course - on the daily, excellent fun on the twisties, and we've been on some track days, too, it coped with that as well. E46 is an even better platform if you just wanna go fast, of course - much more rigid -, but it's too modern for me. The E36 has that analogue, OG feel to it, I love the feeling it has even in stock form (although it has to be good to provide what you want from it, most of them are too run down). I also like the design, I know many people still hate on the E36 but for me it's 2nd best to the E31 when it comes to "modern" BMW (overall it's the 507, of course). I can't afford to have two convertibles, I already have this and another hobby car, but if I could, I'd definitely build a Miata with some kind of engine swapped in. The K is a great idea, I really like Alex's Phil from Carthrottle as well. The only problem with that for me is you can't get papers for any kind of engine swap where I live, absolutely impossible to drive a car like that on the streets, even my E36 with the mods I mentioned takes some "persuasion" to get through our kind of MOT, even though it looks bone stock if you don't look at the wheels and big brakes. And if I wanted a track-only car, I would choose a base with a solid roof.
@@cowmath77 Motorbikes are a different world for sure. Once you taste what that's like on a good bike, and you learn how to ride somewhat properly and confidently, it's hard to get the same sensation from a car :) I have a Ducati, too. Although just an old Monster 600 but I love it. Doesn't even work, been sitting for 2 years now, gonna try to fix it up this winter. Car project took all my time and money, the E36 is kind of a childhood dream car of mine so it's a different story. I guess I shouldn't get a better bike since that would make me fall out of my cars right? :D

@@toddduffy1658 Using CR to buy cars sounds more like a Toyota buyer. If you knew about BMWs than you would know N55's had VANOS bolt shearing requiring a two week engine tear down and rebuild by the highest rate BMW master techs. We also had a starter motor fire that destroyed every electrical component in the car including the ECU, fuse panel, dash, window electrics, doors locks, and battery. Two $5000 clutches. Two $2500 water pumps. All boost intake piping fails, including the plastic sided FMIC. Maybe 50 more problems under $2000. Still needs massive work on around 10 major leaks, dead AC compressor, but the biggie is a new top as the fabric has disintegrated. The car is worth maybe $2K.
The key differences are: 1. it was close considering you have double the power and second james is gonna go home in miata while with that bimmer it’s always 50/50 possibility of going home on a tow truck

M3 suspension setup with strongflex bushings and mostly eibach parts. Pilot Sport 4S tires. Some modifications to the chassis to make it slightly more rigid. As a result, it can actually compete with the likes of the Toyota GT86. Awesome experience. Of course it cost me a ton of money to get it to this level, and also a lot of time (we made almost everything by ourselves with some friends, except for the ECU and the chassis stuff). Perfectly usable - although quite stiff, of course - on the daily, excellent fun on the twisties, and we've been on some track days, too, it coped with that as well.
E46 is an even better platform if you just wanna go fast, of course - much more rigid -, but it's too modern for me. The E36 has that analogue, OG feel to it, I love the feeling it has even in stock form (although it has to be good to provide what you want from it, most of them are too run down). I also like the design, I know many people still hate on the E36 but for me it's 2nd best to the E31 when it comes to "modern" BMW (overall it's the 507, of course).
I can't afford to have two convertibles, I already have this and another hobby car, but if I could, I'd definitely build a Miata with some kind of engine swapped in. The K is a great idea, I really like Alex's Phil from Carthrottle as well. The only problem with that for me is you can't get papers for any kind of engine swap where I live, absolutely impossible to drive a car like that on the streets, even my E36 with the mods I mentioned takes some "persuasion" to get through our kind of MOT, even though it looks bone stock if you don't look at the wheels and big brakes. And if I wanted a track-only car, I would choose a base with a solid roof.
@@cowmath77 Motorbikes are a different world for sure. Once you taste what that's like on a good bike, and you learn how to ride somewhat properly and confidently, it's hard to get the same sensation from a car :)
I have a Ducati, too. Although just an old Monster 600 but I love it. Doesn't even work, been sitting for 2 years now, gonna try to fix it up this winter. Car project took all my time and money, the E36 is kind of a childhood dream car of mine so it's a different story. I guess I shouldn't get a better bike since that would make me fall out of my cars right? :D

My 2011 135i Convertible cost $46K, I have $60K in repairs in it, and it needs $30K in work. Its worth $2K, in pristine condition.

Using CR to buy cars sounds more like a Toyota buyer. If you knew about BMWs than you would know N55's had VANOS bolt shearing requiring a two week engine tear down and rebuild by the highest rate BMW master techs. We also had a starter motor fire that destroyed every electrical component in the car including the ECU, fuse panel, dash, window electrics, doors locks, and battery. Two $5000 clutches. Two $2500 water pumps. All boost intake piping fails, including the plastic sided FMIC. Maybe 50 more problems under $2000.
Still needs massive work on around 10 major leaks, dead AC compressor, but the biggie is a new top as the fabric has disintegrated. The car is worth maybe $2K.

The key differences are: 1. it was close considering you have double the power and second james is gonna go home in miata while with that bimmer it’s always 50/50 possibility of going home on a tow truck
