  • Glenn Miller was one of the biggest American celebrities in the late 1930s. Then he joined the Army-and disappeared mysteriously when his plane vanished without a trace over the English Channel. A researcher recently examined military documents from that era and found the definitive answer to this riddle.

The truth is we will never know for certain what took place after he left England.Icing was certainly a known problem and the plane's pilot F.O.Morgan was an experienced pilot that had made the trip multiple times, sometimes under adverse conditions like that day. That he found the airport where Miller was waiting that foggy morning certainly has to account for some serious expertise. The Norseman was a work horse plane that had as many issues as any other military aircraft. And the plane's engine was already well heated from the flight to the airport. No one saw the plane once it left the British land mass and there are no witnesses to its demise. As I say,no cause can be absolutely attributed or ruled out,and as such will always remain a mystery.

The best clues to Glenn Miller's mission (and disappearance) are the date he left for Paris, and the type of plane he rode on through Alaska-like bush-pilot flying conditions.
Premature celebrations in England may have betrayed the secrets of our D-day success and caused the Nazis to modify their coded (Enigma) messages to mislead us -- as we had misled them with “Ultra”.
Two months earlier, hundreds of V2 rockets began to fall on Antwerp, four months after D-day. Antwerp was an essential deep-water logistic port for hundreds of shiploads of supplies to sustain the D-day invasion.
During the relatively peaceful period of Christmas, two Intelligence officers, Col. Koch and Gen. Strong suspected that the weak German defense of Berlin against the Soviets was because the Nazis were preparing for a major attack --- in the West.
The Ardennes forest, in Belgium, was the only place it could hide.
The best time for a German attack would be when the winter weather was at its worst because it kept our Army air force and its aerial reconnaissance planes grounded -- except for Glenn Miller's final flight.
Rumors of an attack through the Ardennes (Belgium) in Alaska-like weather were serious and needed to be confirmed. That occurred the following day when the Battle of the Bulge began and grew into the deadliest campaign in the war. Who saw it first? The pilot or Glenn Miller?
The Army notified Glenn Miller's wife of the death of her husband on Christmas Eve. The day after Christmas, Patton relieved a surrounded airborne division at Bastogne.
The Battle of the Bulge continued for another month (Jan 26, 1945).
Whether Glenn Miller lived or died, his sacrifice taught us all a valuable lesson.
    Celebrations can also be hazardous.

The fuel lines froze?? If the fuel lines froze, they would of frozen to death long before that.

None of this is new. A single engine aircraft, over water is dodgy enough, but in winter at night with no anticing or de-icing equipment the chances of success are low.
Just to correct the type of icing that the aircraft would have experienced, the main problem would be ice forming on the leading edges of the wings and tailplane completely changing the wing shape. In addition there is also the danger of the pitot head icing leading to a loss of airspeed information and the carburettor is very likely to ice up, although the Norsman may have had some protection from the last two.
This has never been a mystery!
