Thank you for that. I cannot afford a sewing machine right now and enjoy the feeling of hand sewing anyway (I find it relaxing and don't mind the time it takes to make something) so thank you very much for explaining that ! 😊
I learned sewing from my grandma, just by watching her. I’ve always wanted to master more of it, especially sewing in a zipper! The reason I needed this tutorial was to turn a stuffed animal that my child adores into a little cute (not very functional) back bag. This helped me soooo much and I’m definitely subscribing. 🫶🏼Thank you! You’re amazing 😻
Love the hand picked zipper technique. Good job in showing your "You Tubers" that it can be done. Have used this technique for over forty years and it is wonderful especially on good woolens and silk, a real couture touch. Have seen designer labels charge hundreds of $'s and even into the thousands for that look. I might mention an early Dior alpaca skirt which cost $2500 in the late 1970's. Holt Renfrew in Montreal Canada used to carry designer labels which used this technique. Happy sewing. Joanie
I could never get the hang of using a sewing machine, and prefer sewing by hand. I've only sewn for a few creative endeavors, out of necessity, and lots of mending. Have sewn a couple zippers, but it's been a long time...before you tube, lol. So thank you for this informative video!
Thank you! So glad I came upon your channel. I'm a new sewer and prefer sewing by hand over a machine so I'm excited to learn from any and all of your videos. I hope your having a great week too!
I learned to sew everything by hand as a young girl . My mom was a seamstress and and so thankful I learned all that from her. Sewing machines are great and fast but changing needles/ threads/feet etc sometimes takes longer than sewing by hand .
Thank you so much for this. I really enjoy hand sewing and you have given me the confidence to do more. I look forward to your other hand sewing videos. Sandie x
Thank you!! I finally found the video I need. Saved it to my Playlist. I will let you know how my final product turns out. You made a subscriber out of me 😀
You've taken me back! My mother always sewed zips in by hand, and I've done it occasionally. You think it's going to be a lot of faff, but it really isn't. Thank you - I'll probably do it this way next time, unless I'm using an invisible zip!
I started sewing around 1960, yeah, I'm old, and initially learned to sew zippers only by machine. I didn't find it that difficult but it never looked as nice as a "picked zipper", which is what I later learned to call a hand-sewn one. Little couturier touches like this really make a garment stand out as well made. I love the technique but I never thought of chalking a line on the outside first - blindingly simple and smart! I'll be using my quilting rulers for this from now on. (See, "old dogs" can learn new tricks! 😊). Thanks for sharing it with us! In addition, a very important lesson I learned was to NEVER hand-sew a zipper while holding it in your lap; you'll end up with a "bumpy" end result - I learned this the hard way a long time ago. Always sew it on the flat as you showed.
I've never done a zipper, but I'm planning to make an outfit with several and I don't have a sewing machine. This pretty much confirmed what I already thought, but was still very helpful!
I've been wanting to take up more hand sewing. Thank you for posting. This is a good compliment to an article on hand-sewn zips in the most recent Threads article as well.
For some, that may have vision problems, perhaps using a coloured thread for the backstitch would help to see how much thread is viewed from the outside of the fabric.
Omg. I’m planning to start my first dress sometime in the future and this is a REAL LIFE SAVER!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much for teaching us your techniques!!!! -new subscriber
Do you have any beginner videos? I've never sewn anything ever so I don't even know what a basting stitch is. Basically my dad recently got diagnosed with kidney disease and he has to have dialysis 3 days a week. I went online to try to find shirts that have a zipper for his port and they're like $35 to $40 each which I can not afford. I was thinking maybe I could cut the T-shirt on a diagonal and insert a zipper. I'm not sure how difficult this will be but it would save a lot of money if I could do it myself.
That's so sweet for you to look after your dad like that Kelly! I don't have a lot of beginner vids and currently I'm in school and working so not producing videos. But I would recommend for starters, try the first ones by hand. Honestly the biggest thing to watch out for is that the t shirt will want to stretch and the zipper not. So try to pin the zipper on without stretching the shirt before you sew. Or even use a washable fabric glue first to position the zip. Good luck! Your dad is lucky to have you!
THANK YOU! Have heard many times that X, y or z task would be better done by hand but it's kind of assumed you know how to do that. I don't, and tips like the ruler underneath or just pick up a few threads with each stitch are gold dust x
I live sewing by hand. Its very enjoyable and relaxing. Also, sewing machines are so frustrating to me. They always get out of whack and i spend tons if time trying to get it to run right, and i end up so frustrated. Sewing machines do bot like me.

New to this. Mom sewed and I had a yr of it in school. Haven't done it since and I'm 51. LOL Making pillow case for hubby and sewing a zipper in. First time. What is basting??
Good for you! Basting is when you put in some big, easy to remove stitches to hold the fabric while you work. Then when you get your permanent stitches in, you remove the basting stitches. Happy sewing❤️
Hi Stephanie, this is SO helpful!! Would the process be the same for stretch fabric though? I'm wanting to put an invisible zipper down the side of a leotard which I will be rhinestoning for the Taylor Swift concert, but I've never sewn a zipper before and want to put the zipper in before i start the rhinestones. I am wanting to do it by hand as I don't know how to use a machine, but if thats the best way then I can definitely learn! Thank you
What a fun project! You are smart to put the zip in first. But stretch is a different animal. First tip, make the stitches bigger than I did in this video. There is no use trying to hide any stitching with spandex. You need strong stitches that won't rip the fabric. Yes you can do it by hand just make sure your stitches are close together. But the big thing to remember is that your zipper has no stretch unlike your fabric. So if your leotard ends up stretching a lot when you wear it, you will need to try it on and then pin on the zip while wearing the garment (probably you will need some help). After that you have a couple options. 1) (if you want to follow the same process as in the video) While wearing the leotard. Mark both the zipper and the garment on either side of the zipper in the same spots. Then unpin so you can get out. Pin it back together making sure you stretch the garment so that the marks line up on both the zipper and the leotard. 2) pin it while wearing it but pin evenly on both sides of the zipper. (And seriously, use all the pins here) then you can leave it pinned while you unzip to get out. Make sure you leave enough space for the zip to slide past the pins. Then just go back and stitch the zipper to the garment. You might not get as nice of edges right next to the zip but this will be easier. I hope this helps! Have the best time at the show.
I am horrible with a machine. I make cloth menstrual pads, and the ones a make by hand are 10x better than the ones I have made with a machine. Nice to know zippers can be done by hand!

Yes, you can use a wide Zig Zag with a very short stitch length to create a bar tack to make a stop. But I wouldn't let your needle actually hit the teeth. So if the zip is really thick, you may have to do your stops by hand.

So out of curiousity, why do you soap the thread?
It just keeps it from getting tangled and then the soap washes right out.
Oooow so that's why, does that work with all kinds of thread? I have been having the tangle problem lately when i started making plushies:).
Yes it will. You can also use bee's wax but it won't wash out as well. There are also other commercial brands of thread conditioner.
Nice good to know:) and am i right in presuming that the kind of soap dousn't mather as long as it's a solid one?:)
Yeah I just use whatever I have around until it gets a bit too chewed up then that one hits the shower and I take a fresh one for my sewing table.
