My apologies everyone. It seems the plastic Nalgene bottles are made in USA, while stainless steel is China. Still, the construction is far stronger on the Nalgene in my opinion.

When I was looking for a stainless steel canteen I wasn’t able to find one that was made in the USA. The Nalgene one is very good though, I’ve carrying mine for over a year now.

Steel bottles are all made in China. Like, ALL of them, from what I've seen. Libery Works makes an aluminum bottle in the US. That's the closest I could find.

For the Nalgene you can get a cap that allows you to use it like a bladder to drink from while it in your pack.

I only found your channel today and it's great to see a review comparing all three of arguably the most popular stainless bottles. I've got/had all three and for me I've settled on the Klean Kanteen. Love them all but had the best overall use from KK. The volume wins for me. It's the largest possible size which still fits in bottle bags, pouches etc. My only reservations about the Nalgene was that I have to hold the lid while drinking as it swings around and I find it easier to just slide the KK lid on one finger instead. I loved the idea of the ring for cordage etc although never actually used it as I prefer the fish spreader. My main issue with Nalgene was the square edges. I dropped mine onto the road getting out the car and it split along the "corner" near the top rim. My other two bottles have dents all round their rims but haven't split. Presumably due to their being more rounded. It's a shame as I'd only had the Nalgene a few weeks. Pathfinder needs a very tight lid to stop small leaks. KK for me. Thanks again for the great review. Zak 👍

"The most important thing is boiling water in your bottle." Proceeds to show us 3 pristine-condition bottles that never touched flame.
Jokes aside, thanks for the informative video, I was wondering between the 3. Found a cheap *starter* alternative for $7 at IKEA.

Unfortunately, the Nalgene seems to be made in China…I’d own one now if made in USA.

I actually do own one now. Though I always try and buy USA, sometimes I’ll make an exception if it’s at our locally owned outfitter, Earth Adventures.
Fyi, if you lost the cap, the one from a 32oz plastic Nalgene will tighten down but will dribble if not upright. Still, I like knowing there is a decent backup option.

I have the Pathfinder cook set and it came with a fish mouth spreader that you can put in the bottle to hang it over a fire.

Thanks, Dan. I am all about buying USA. I'll look at them later, I'm headed to the Oregon Knife collectors Association in Eugene. First one since Covid. Good to see you out in the woods.

I have given away my s.s. bottles, due to the weight and now use titanium bottles (which can be placed into a fire for boiling), along with my Grayl Geopress.
I kept the 64 ounce s.s. bottle and it stays in my truck.
I highly recommend the the wide mouth bottle lids be replaced with Klean Kanteen Wide Mouth Collapsing Loop Caps, the loops lay flat and don't take up as much space in a pouch. They do work with wide mouth Pathfinder s.s. and titanium bottles.

You’re completely right on your views between the 3z Nalgene 316 stainless steel is better than the other two by far. You mention most of the good things but one of my favorites about the Nalgene in comparison to pathfinder or klean canteen due to the welded internal structure of the pathfinder and the klean canteen. Nalgene has NO WELDED INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL welded joints that could come apart. It’s all one solid piece of steel in ss form. I love the Nalgene ss bottle 100%. Guyotdesigns made the best ones. I have one that still labels that company vs the new ones that only are purely made my Nalgene. Still just as good though. Totally worth buying over the other. Two. Also don’t forget what he said. The pathfinder cup works PERFECTLY with the Nalgene bottle.

Dan, thanks for the informative video. One suggestion, you have to try the Human Gear Capcap. Fits the Nalgene and adds a smaller screw down opening on top of the wide mouth opening. Better for cold weather as you don’t touch the cold metal with your lips. I’ve been using them for 9 years. You won’t be sorry. Amazon carries them. 👍

    Hi there,
what you didn't mentioned, maybe you didn't know, is about the MSR purifier.
The Pathfinderbottle is made for the MSR purifier, so you are able to screw on the MSR and then you are good to go.
I dont know about the other bottle.
    best regards

Great review! The Nalgene is the best, even though it’s made in China, because of the 18/10 surgical grade steel and the ability to tie cordage around the lip to reach water that’s out of reach.

Pathfinder sells a spring that hooks on the inside, 32 oz is easy for most water purification tabs.

I have a steel and a plastic Nalgene in a condor water bag that has a condor water pouch attached to it with two extra pouches on the sides for food that I keep ready to go in case of emergencies. I never realized how tough the plastic one was because that was the last one I bought. It's good because of the measurements you can see on the side. Like you said they're bullet proof and they have a neck.

Hello Ochoco Bushcraft. I've got a question to you. Are the wide mouth lids of the nalgene and the pathfinder ones interchangable? Do they fit perfectly on each other? (Am I right that all wide mouth nalgene lids do fit on your stainless steel nalgene?) The background is that I wanna change my nalgene kidney formed canteen to a pathfinder kidney canteen. And the "OTF Cap" by nalgene, which is a wide mouth lid, would make it possible to open it one-handed. So that I can still hold my spinning-fishing rod in the other hand at the same time. Would make things easier for me at the riverbanks. Thumbs up for sharing your experience on this video, thank you very much and greetings from Germany
