  • So what is the best option, the Pathfinder Bottle or Canteen set? The Bottle Set and Canteen Set are two of our all-time best selling products. Dave Canterbury explains the background on development, and why you may carry one or the other. Stainless Steel Canteens and Bottles and accompanying products are not all created equal. Dave explains why both Pathfinder sets have not only served him well on thousands of hikes and overnights, but will serve him well for years to come. The Stove for each set is perfect for over the coals or when paired with our Pathfinder Alcohol Stove. The thought process and continued development of the Canteen Set and Bottle Set in addition to our "Pathfinder Promise" Lifetime Guarantee speaks volumes to the degree we stand behind these sets and our quest to continually improve. Single Wall Stainless Steel construction and well thought out designs that pull influence from proven designs of the past, are what set Pathfinder Apart. If you are interested in either of these two sets, please check them out here:

Just recently, I added the Pathfinder PFM40 (Swedish Mess Kit style) Cook Set to my Pathfinder Stainless Steel Canteen Set in my pack. This is a great setup for cooking up some lunch or dinner when in the woods. On longer journeys in this hot weather, I’ve also been carrying an additional 32 ounces of water in my Pathfinder Stainless Steel Bottle. That maybe a bit of container overload, but I’m usually doing more cooking than simply boiling up some water. Self Reliance Outfitters designs and sales rock solid camp cooking equipment. Very satisfied with these purchases.

As an ex British soldier, I totally agree with you on the water bottle and cup set. In the 80,s I had a plastic water bottle and cup. I hated it. I always wanted a metal version just to boil water like you said. I have now have the crusader mug but need the bottle to fit. Not sure if the American bottle will fit. Fortunately I'm not a soldier anymore. So don't need to worry about it too much. 😂

I think the most overlooked addition to the bottle cookset is that the entire thing including the stick stove will fit into the pathfinder 40 oz cup.
With that theres still room for the alcohol stove or a butane fuel can inside the molle bag. Best kit ever. Food and drink with 2 stove options.
    Keep it up Dave!

  • @YankeeWoodcraft
    @YankeeWoodcraft 9 месяцев назад +10

Both are great, but it's the canteen for me hands down.
It's easier for me to grasp for opening, I like the lower profile kidney design that hugs a pack on the side bottle pocket, it's old school, it's MILSURP on steroids and I just subjectively like using it more. Anyone can pour 32oz in it, put a mark on the outside of it's wall and BOOM! That issues is solved regarding using water purification tablets. #LifeIsEasy
I'm just getting into UL kits like a Ti cup/pot combo for recreational hiking and gravel cycling, but for woodcraft (traditional camping, old school outings, hunting, etc...), give me that stainless steel canteen all day, everyday and thrice on Sunday. Nothing else will do. All my survival rigs have stainless bottles/pot/combos. There's only going to be 3 things left on the planet if we nuke ourselves into oblivion when the smoke clears; roaches, cold handle skillets and stainless steel canteens.

I recently acquired the canteen cook set. Tested it for leaks with positive results (no leaks). Dave is correct about tweaking the tabs on the cup to ensure a good lock up. I would suggest making those tabs a bit longer to enhance the friction lock up. Other than that this kit is outstanding. I also have a couple Pathfinder bottle kits with carrying pouches. The pouches are very roomy for carrying extra stuff in addition to the bottle kit. They have a water resistant lining, also. I have a couple of similar water bootle pouches made by another manufacturer which due to a thin layer of insulation aren't quite as voluminous as the Pathfinder pouches so fitting a 32 oz bottle inside is no problem until I try to add a nesting cup. Got my first PKS knife a couple years ago and have added 2 more since along with the Pathfinder water containers/cook kits and a Pathfinder skillet and I haven't been disappointed.

I have both systems. The Pathfinder Bottle System is in my hiking/camping pack, and the Pathfinder Canteen System is in my wilderness/ survival pack.
I have a second, batwing cup in my wilderness pack but it’s nested around another canteen.
Pathfinder products are scattered throughout all my bags, kits, and packs.

Great Products. I like a combination of the two. Canteen cook set in my canteen carrier or in my haversack. Canteen set is my food cooking set. And what I drink from while hiking. Then one bottle cook set in one of the pockets of my back pack. Then a second bottle for the pocket on the other side. This is what I make coffee in. My brew setup. This way I can be cooking and making coffee at the same time. With just one set my food or coffee gets cold. This gives me over 3/4 of a gallon of water. Most of the time I use Trangia type burners with both sets. By the way the Canteen stove makes a good digging tool.

I quit buying SRO bottles when they stopped _selling_ them. After buying 3 bottles ( over time ) I lost one that popped out of my carry bag while it was strapped on my Sportsman. I tried to buy another, but SRO informed me they only sell them in a SET now. So I have been buying Klean Kanteen 40 oz. bottles ever since. They fit in my SRO cups, they have better lids, and they're only $30 compared to the SRO set ( $50 after shipping). I'm tough on equipment a gear. I only have one SRO water bottle left, even though I have 4 cups and lids. I've replaced 3 with Klean Kanteen bottles at this point. I am unsure about why they gank their longtime customers like this by absolutely refusing to sell them a freaking water bottle, but it has all worked out int he end. For those who are buying their first set - it's a great set but for the lid. DO NOT PUT THE LID IN THE DISHWASHER. It will ruin it. I messed up 2 lids by forgetting. My other lids ( KK's, YETI's, and Stanley's) have been through the dishwasher a hundred times. So I forget I have to handwash the SRO lid. But the kit. It's great. Just know if you ever need to replace the bottle, or if you want an extra bottle, they're gonna gank you for a whole kit.

I added an extra canteen cup , lid and alcohol stove inside the kit which left me: a cup, a pan and a pot.
Fairly robust and complete except for one thing: a container.
The simple upside down extra canteen cup over the top of the canteen gives me a cup, cook pot AND a container🎉😃

Wish they’d make a stainless cap for it. I’m going to find a screen to fit my canteen, great idea. Maybe just a piece of food grade screening with a rubber band for filling canteen straight out of a water way so debris can’t float in.

I've used the canteen set for years. It pairs well with a German style mess kit, for the extra pot and cups. However, an extra cup might replace this setup for me.

Thanks for explaining the setup options, lots of things here I wouldnt realize until I used it for a few months. Really happy to buy from pathfinder / SRO because I know the products are made to work together and continue to be improved upon with various options and upgrades over time.

Amazing level of design thought and detail attention in these products! DoD should contract with Pathfinder on all their basic camping equipment procurements.

Like what someone else asked, what happened to the titanium sets? I bought one. Like the 2 different cups with it.

I have both of these items and I have used the bottle set much more than the canteen set mainly because I day hike much more and use the bottle set to drink from and a quick lunch or Ramen noodles. The alcohol stove is perfect for this since we are in open fire restrictions so much of the time. Both of them are great items for backpacking and camping.

The hiking aspect is where it loses me. The point is that it all nests together, but if you're out hiking, you need a bottle of water ready to drink....not a bottle nested and packed away. Do you just not drink or are you adding excess weight by carrying additional water?

@@Swearengen1980 yes, I do carry an additional bottle of water for quick swallows during my hike. Personally, I’ve never bought into the weight obsession. If I was hiking the AT, weight would be a factor. But, for a 4 hour day hike, I can handle an additional 6 or 8 ounces. I don’t buy ultra-light equipment and I use a 5”, stainless steel Firebox stove. So, yeah, I bring extra drinking water. When I was a Boy Scout, my backpack weighed more than I did. LOL.

@@elderhiker7787 I'm not a big nitpicker on weight either. It's just that if you piece all these types of videos together for everything you "should" have, you do end up with a 50 lb pack. Staying at a reasonable 25-30 lbs of gear isn't "weight obsession", not like the people who try to get to 10 lbs. I actually do hike long distances (like the AT), as well camp, hunt, etc. I try to make most of my purchases multi-functional (excluding fire/cooking), so weight to some degree does factor in and I have to pick and choose which areas I do need to go ultra light on. Really it comes down to, I don't consider a 4 hour hike to camp "backpacking". If they claim a gear is meant for backpacking, then it should be convenient and intended to be used often, easily accessible, over long distances for days at a time.

Another advantage to the canteen set is that it conforms to your body. So, it looks better on you when worn on a hip belt or cross body as opposed to the rounded bottle set which sticks out more.

Batwing handles on a canteen cup are the only way to go
no fussing around with your tab and that lever and the canteen cup collapsing, spilling your coffee on the ground
    with bat wings. It’s simple
    fool proof.

Great video and designs. I’ve never had any of those plastic canteens (not counting later Nalgene variants) which EVER quit tasting like plastic. Especially if it was a 2nd quart on a hot day or later.

Yeah, you never shake the plastic/chemical taste no matter what brand plastic. The only plastic "canteen" that works without the taste problem are those "Smart Water" bottles which are big with UL thru-hiker types if going with a "canteen" setup.

A lid for the water bottle. Like the nesting cup would be cool.
