  • The Suzuki DR650 is great flatform for creating a great adventure, dual sport, or even a supermoto bike. But what is it like in stock? This Suzuki DR650 review looks at the stock bike before we started our 10 part adventure bike series. Check out the links in this vid! Time to get back into adventure riding again... but somehow wound up trying some cross training on the big fat bushpig, a brand new DR650! All silly riding done on private property. The ultimate Suzuki DR650 review. The wheelie beast. I've owned a pile of different bikes and for some reason the old DR650 is the one that enjoyed itself with the front wheel in the air. Why? Buggered if I know. Designed back in the jurassic era, it's one of the few dinosaurs left, just read the Suzuki DR650 reviews. Air cooled. Five speed. Cable clutch. It has barely changed since 1996. And the Suzuki DR650 comes highly restricted from the factory but will still pop the front wheel up everywhere even in the ridiculously high third gear if you read the stock Suzuki DR650 review. For some reason they outsourced to this design team for the DR650. Tyre shredding acceleration. Chain snapping torque. Bowel loosening thrills. Long recognised as the best motorcycle ever built in Suzuki DR650 reviews, it has also faced extreme prejudice due to its phenomemal power output. Seen as an unfair advantage, the DR650 has been banned from all major motosports including motocross, moto GP and enduro. Are you ready to risk your life for the ultimate ride on the DR650 epic enduro beast? We still don't know the horsepower of the DR650 because it keeps breaking they dyno machine. Who created this absurdly powerful bike? It wasn't the usual Suzuki engineers according to Suzuki DR650 reviews. These misfits also went on to design the DR800 which was taken out of production when it killed too many riders. The cross training enduro vids on our dirt bike channel apply the same skills to enduro bikes - you'll be amazed at the difference it makes in terms of traction and advanced techniques such as jumping up vertical rock faces ... and wheelies! Everything in tough gnarly terrain is trying to throw you off balance, so balancing lays a foundation for enduro skills for guys like Jonny Walker and Ruben Chadwick. Anyway I only did this video because supporters asked if I could string together all the Suzuki DR650 wheelie vids in one video. The many faces of the Suzuki DR650. Trials. Desert racing. Motocross. And Moto G P. Should you buy a Suzuki DR650? Just remember this important statistic. And good luck old chap. Getting into trials riding... Losing traction is a cardinal sin in trials riding and riders go to extreme lengths to ensure their tires don't slip. Thankfully the DR1800 never went into production. Although that can get a bit nerve wracking as it means highway speed and beyond which could be nasty if it flipped according to Suzuki DR650 reviews. The weird thing is at one point I owned a KTM 690 and it was much harder to wheelie, not an epic enduro beast. Sure, it put out close to double the horsepower but it felt harder to lift and keep on the balance point. Maybe it was just me, but I was extremely disappointed and of course went back to a Suzuki DR650 (not just for the wheelies of course). These Suzuki DR650 bikes have certainly carved out a reputation for themselves. The massive single just made the bike jump up and down on the one spot. A major problem faced was obtaining test riders for the DR650. They did not need to be skilled riders. Suzuki needed riders who had a death wish, or had a sufficiently low I Q that they were unable to assess the risks involved. Being such an old design, they have a ridiculously long list of known issues, and a few of these can actually kill the engine. But many of us enjoy the process of fixing these, update the suspension, and end up with an ultra reliable bike that is way cheaper than its bling ridden adventure competititors. If you are interested, I've done an entire series and Suzuki DR650 review on transforming the Suzuki DR650 into a kick arse adventure bike... and wheelie beast. Most trials techniques involve exact use of the clutch e.g. feathering the clutch for traction control up hills... dropping the clutch to launch the bike into the air as Jonny Walker and Graham Jarvis can do on extreme enduro racing bikes and trials bikes. After watching this video I’ve realized that the DR is 1000% more capable off road than I am. I’m not worried about mods anymore until my skill level improves. Nice riding!

Same here Kastro. I kept that DR650 completely stock for a few months... and I'm doing the same with my new one I just bought a few months ago. The only mod that might be worth doing straight away is Plex valves for the front forks. It dramatically improves the suspension for both road and offroad riding and generally the bike will be a bit safer e.g. you won't have the front end diving under heavy braking.

I gotta ask: my brand new stock 650 (bought it with 0 miles on it) has about 75 miles on it tonight. I was riding in the dark, looked down, and noticed my header pipe is glowing red! WTF? I coasted home and got on the forums. Seems other's have noticed it on their's, and it is much more noticeable at night. I Don't like it, it seems...dangerous or something. The thin steel is only .60 thick is what they are saying. Have you noticed this on your 650?

You are an incredible rider. These issues will be major issues for inexperienced riders, spinning the tires, bottoming out, etc., and you accelerate through them. Truly impressive. I have an 02 dr650 that I will never sell. I sold my 98 xt350 and I kick myself everyday for it.

I am absolutely in love with this bike.
And you are guilty of this ...!
    ;-)
I like this concept very much. Its a modern XR600.
Air-oil cooling, carburetor, chassis ... simple classic bike but with modern suspension and brakes.
    Very effective.
    And... with devastating engine
She will never leave you or give you problems.
    It's THE BIKE...!
But ... in Spain (and Europe, I think) is out of order.
    Very sad.
    Maybe some day...
Thanks a ton for your time, Bro...!

Well, yeah, that, and he's complaining about the crappy suspension, tires, and weight, etc., but hey, look at the places he is riding that thing! And HOW he is riding it, I mean he is seriously ripping on that thing on some very nasty terrain. I'd say the DR650 is doing a great job, stock! I mean it's a BIG bike! Now imagine trying to ride those same trails, creeks, rocks, roots, and hills on a Harley Davidson Sportster. Yeah that's right, then the DR650 would feel like the finest dirt bike in the world! Lol.. The only reason I make that comparison is because back in the old days, that's what they did, they bought a Sportster, put some knobbies on it and took off the lights, and rode it off-road, they did the same with with BSA's and Triumphs too. Because back then, there were no dirt bikes and street bikes, there were just motorcycles! Lol

It's amazing what a difference a few hundred pounds (or 90.6 kgs? ) make! I've made a ton of progress cross training on my trials bike, but the first time I tried logs on the XR650, I was right back to gumby mode. The techniques I've learned on the little bike do help on the big one, but the transition is a bit jarring!

You Bag it out but it's still a very capable bike in stock form.. I'm on my 3rd in 25 years and never felt the need to do any mods other then a $17 muffler upgrade of a mini moke. . I ride with a bunch of blokes on Euro trash bikes (eg Huskys,KTM) Whom have all the fruit but yet can't seem to match the bush pig in the tight trails or sand. The right rider makes anything possible on a stock bike.

Of course I did put better tires on mine for riding off-road (Pirelli MT21's), but I didn't do a thing to the suspension, it works just fine for me.

@@trevorjameson3213 YOu sire are the exact person I need advice from! lol :) I moved to Colorado a year ago, and sold 2 motorcycles to make the move. Finally have the cash to pick one up and looking daily. I see a 1997 DR650 that looks good in my area. My goal is to ride mostly trails, so deciding between a 4 stroke or 2 stroke, 250, 500, 0r bigger....so many questions. I have a 3k budget to find a used bike. Do you recommend DR over any other at that price range? KLR 250 any good? I have ridden sport bikes on the street for the last 8 years and the first and only dirt bike I had I got when I was 15 - a 1979 YZ250 (I'm now 50).
      Subbed to your channel.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

You guys talking about “heavy”. Try riding an R1200GSA around for a while and picking it up a few times, and you’ll be looking at the DR and and the DRZ saying, “200-250lbs LIGHTER? OMG sign me up!”).

would love to, my brother used to have one and loved it. it would be good to see one of the euro brands go to 350cc, i reckon everyone would be drooling over the extra grunt.

      CROSS TRAINING ENDURO
I don’t think there’s a big enough market for high displacement smokers as there are already so many people preferring the 250cc or even 125cc 2 strokes. The people that want more low end torque simply need to buy 4 strokes which is sad.
My dad owns a 380 and he said that when I’m able to kickstart it, I would be allowed to drive it. Now that I got quite bored of my Beta rr50 racing I tried kickstarting it and after a few attempts succeeded. (Mind you, this is quite a big upgrade for me as a 15 year old and I’m still ecstatic about this so I probably sound like a bragging a-hole😅)
I literally have no words to describe how I felt driving this thing! I had to rethink big parts of my driving habits, like not holding the throttle wide open while shifting as leaving the throttle slightly open while shifting already results in the front end coming up... XD
All of this probably sounds completely normal to you but for me it was a crazy, highly addictive experience!
Have a good day and thank you for your time!

If you want to drive like that yes the suspension needs work, but for the type of riding I do it is a dream at 71 yr, love the soft suspension, great for the back, I do off road but go slow and enjoy the scenery, but you are wright about the tires going down a hard packed at gravel at 80 kn and in to soft sand can be scary, but the worst thing about the DR 650 is the small gas tank, can't go for a good ride with out looking for gas stations, witch are hard to find were I like to ride. I am just waiting for my new 2020 DR 650 it is hear but want every thing on it before I pick it up. The only thing is I will leave the stock tires on till I ware them out, should not take all that long, Have a Versys X 300 great bike but want to feel the wind more so will keep it for cold weather and rain days. also have a Suzuki S 40 , love it to but small tank as suspension not good for rough roads. So when I get the Dr It will most likely be my main ride, well be able to feel the wind on my chest and great soft suspension for those rough roads, and like the Versys X I will have it set up for the Treker hard bags.

Are you in Australia, Hilton? The new Tanamai edition is coming soon which has the big 20 litre tank, hand guards, and bashplate. I am hoping to buy one if I can save enough money. I agree the stock suspension is okay for just cruising around, I did not change mine on the last bike for a few months and found it was fine until I started riding more aggressively.

@@crosstrainingenduro Have not heard about the Tanamai hear in PEI Canada, the Dr 650 will do just have to get the bigger tank so not always looking for gas. that will be 3 bikes in my stable, but thinking about a nice light one for fooling around on going over objects and up steep inclines but want to be able to go on the road a bit as well of all I looked at thinking the DR 200 if I can find a good used one, might have to change the sprockets for a little more low speed power.

spoke to the guys at FFRC just last week regarding a new DR650 to me. Couldn’t get better information and nicer guys to have a chat with. Went with FFRC after seeing the 50 ft jump a DR650 did after being sorted out with their ‘plex valve and upgraded springs, and magic to the rear shock’.

the previous owners were truly amazing. no matter how busy they were, they would always stop to chat with customers, help them load their bikes... even turn away business sometimes, saying "you already have great suspension and you'd be wasting your money". a role model for any business to follow.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  3 года назад +1

Hard to say, Jack. If you weigh under 95kg and just ride it gently then it's not really a problem.... just be prepared for the nose dive under emergency braking. But the moment you push the bike hard and/or you are significantly over 95kg you hit the limitations pretty quickly.
