The lore/premise/backstory (summed up as briefly as I can): The Union Aerospace Corp discovered a portal to hell on Mars, and figured out they can harvest Argent energy from hell as a resource for power supply on Earth, which they could sell for profit. So they tried to do that, but of course it's hell we're talking about so the attempt ultimately was a disaster, many lives lost. Enter Doomguy (aka the DOOM Slayer). In 1993 when the original game came out, he fought his way through the UAC facility on Mars to stop the demons from coming through into our dimension. In so doing, he ends up in hell and has to battle through to survive. In the end he is victorious, but not before the demons manage to kill his pet rabbit. Then they manage to merge into our dimension anyway, and hell on earth ensues (Doom II- circa 1994). In the sequel, Doomguy again has to battle through hell, this time on Earth, until he makes his way to the Icon of Sin (the giant demon). He kills that, and Doom II ends. In 1998, Doom 64 comes out on N64, and isn't an exact sequel, but basically an alternate version of the original story (it's not altogether important, though the Unmayker- a special weapon in a class similar to the BFG9000- is introduced in the N64 version, which is later accessible in DOOM Eternal). In that version, Doomguy decides to stay in hell to keep the demons in check, once the game is won. That isn't canon though, so going forward we pretend that didnt really happen. In 2004 Doom 3 comes out, which is basically a reboot of Doom but as a survival horror FPS rather than an action shooter. Tells much the same story, but at the end there's some weird dragon creature that was never seen before and would never be seen again. Then in 2005 Hollywood wanted to grab at some cash and Dwayne Johnson did too, so they put the Rock into some makeup and made the Doom movie. It sucked, and pretty much butchered the Doom legacy up until that point. BUT Nine Inch Nails was in the end credits, and they're my favorite band so that made me happy to hear, at least. I digress though.. nothing happened with Doom for a long time after that, until 2016. Then DOOM (2016) was released- this could also be considered a reboot, if it wasn't for the fact that it starts with Doomguy waking up from having been imprisoned in a sarcophagus on Mars for who knows how long. As you play through, it's implied heavily that the events of Doom (the original) actually took place, and in the end Doomguy had been sealed in the sarcophagus, only to be freed now and have history repeat itself. There are more in depth story points from DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal (2020) than ever there were in the original games, due to more common player demand for detailed and cinematic story points in modern day gaming, which is where the angels from Heaven come into it, as well as new demons like the Marauder (the ugly dude with the "light saber" battleaxe), and more nefarious details about the greedy motives of the UAC to harvest Argent energy. Basically, history repeats itself all over again in 2016 and 2020, since we see Doomguy first on Mars, then in hell, then in hell on Earth. Even DOOM Eternal, the hell on Earth portion of the newer installments, includes the Icon of Sin all over again toward the end. Though with the newest installments of the IP, more intricate details are included to flesh out the story for audience satisfaction. and they have a boatload of details you can pick up along the way, in-game, as well as many cut scenes which explain the full scope of the whole story in greater detail. The whole IP is basically a satire on the evils and worst-case consequences associated with the reckless greed applicable to capitalism in the corporate world. In this case, those consequences leading to hell on Earth and Mars. There's way more to it, of course. But I did want to keep this as brief as I could, so that's basically the gist. You're Doomguy, a space marine and apparently a prophesied chosen one meant to scare the piss out of the monsters who scare the piss out of the rest of humanity. And your job is to basically rip those monsters apart as quickly and violently as possible while Mick Gordon shreds out some industrial heavy metal music to keep you motivated. Someone else may have explained all this already, or maybe not. Idk. But there you have it. In my opinion, DOOM Eternal is the best installment, because you have to play it the fun way (super aggressive) or else you lose. It's literally designed like that on purpose.😉
Thanks for giving us the story on this! Never knew it was in N64 😯 and also super aggressive fits Bethany’s play style so maybe she will kick ass in Doom Eternal 😁
Doom 2016 was the first time I heard of the Doom franchise, now it's one of my favorites. It was made to make the player feel powerful, and damn did they succeed. Sadly the multiplayer died really quickly, so few people play it now. Also the Pinky is a bull-type demon, the charges are pretty powerful.
@@simonrockstream I'm 19, so yeah I could be called young. I hadn't really known of anything gaming related until I was roughly 13 because of a sheltered childhood so I dunno if there was anything Doom related going on before 2016-17 other than the earlier games.
Doom 2016 and Eternal are the best modern old school shooters in my opinion. You can play as the demons in both games, but only in the multiplayer. Doom 2016 also features the Snap Map Editor with which players can create new singleplayer and coop missions, I find them to play just slightly off no matter how well they are made. A lot of the multiplayer map aesthetics that weren't featured in the campaign were brought back in Doom Eternal. As for backstory, Doom 2016 and Eternal have plenty of it, if you are ok with reading. Please do the Max0r Review! It does include spoilers though, well kinda.
I hadn't played doom since the first reboot in the early 2000’s and then i saw the rip and tear short bid about all the musicians in the heavy metal choir and bought the new one and just for the soundtrack in doom its worth the price.
The story is actually crazy The story of the new Doom games is a continuation of the ORIGINAL doom games from the 90s So gist of it is (from the very start): Doomguy gets sent to Phobos (a moon of mars) cuz he assaulted his officer as he ordered him to shoot civilians. The Phobos station opens a portal to hell and the demons invade and doomguy tries to stop it but in the attempt to close the portal on mars he finds out that earth has already been overrun by demons and killed his pet bunny Daisy. So he goes to earth to stop the hell invasion which stemmed from his hometown. Once it is closed after a while yet another new demon invasion starts spurned on by a demon called the mother demon. This time tho he decides to stay in hell to fight the demons forever. Mind you he was a human (with some amazing abilities) all this time. After and unknown amount of time (likely eons) he is spat out and found by a hyper advanced race of human like people called the Sentinels. (Think a mix of knights and vikings but hyper advanced and honorable and space faring) He is taken in and first used as a gladiator and cannon fodder for the demons but he proves himself to be...not killable...as in he kills everything and usually is the MVP of most battles. His feats are recognized by the Khan Maykr of the Maykr race (think tech angels) and he is taken from war slave status to warrior. He fights the demons with the aid of the sentinels and the maykrs and eventually rises to be one king of the Sentinels (specifically just one part of them) and gets a power upgrade by a high ranking Maykr known as The Seraphim against the wishes of the Khan Maykr and in secret which led the Seraphim to go into hiding. When he did that he stole something from the Maykrs: The Father, which is this universes' version of God. This caused the Maykr's to suffer as they slowly started suffering from something akin to brain death. During one of Doomguy's (now known as Doom Slayer) crusades into one of the deepest parts of hell he finds out that the "dead" sentinels weren't ever dead but enslaved by the Maykrs who actually have a deal with the demons as the Maykrs siphon the souls of the living from them to power their homeworld as this would stave off their brain death issues and the now soulless corpses of the Sentinels (or any other being honestly) would slowly morph into demons. Doom Slayer and his people wanted to warn the rest of the Sentinels but were betrayed by one of their own and locked in hell and slowly were picked off one by one. Doom Slayer however was tricked and put into a sarcophagus and later found by a researcher who led an expedition into hell and Doom Slayer woke up on mars. Here is where Doom 2016 starts. Doom Slayer essentially stops a researcher who got manipulated by hell from unleashing hell on earth. And then some short time after Doom Eternal starts in which it is revealed that this earth and this entire universe he is in is a totally different one than the one originally came from. Then just insert the plot of Doom Eternal Moral of the story: Don't fucking kill bunnies
If you're combining all the Doom games into 1 lore then the original start to Doom was, people were doing teleportation experiments on Mars and it's 2 moons and that teleporter opened a gateway to hell. Demons invaded and Doom Guy went in with a pistol to stop it. But the plot is really only there to have an excuse to kill things. People have found ways to fit it all in but it's confusing, doesn't really jell well when you cross games, and ultimately even in 2016 it's in the background. Hell, not even Doom Guy cares, they had to lock him in a room just to get him to listen to what's going on.
Doom is definitely a fast paced first person shooter. You're always moving and killing. You cannot stay still or you'll get floored. If you're interested in the lore Doom 2016 is full of it.
You know even the multiplayer is dead I still play the snap map feature where you can play other peoples maps or create your own(even though is takes forever. But all in all DOOM is a great game definitely has replay value
This game legit made go out and buy an Xbox One, after actually getting the game before the console and I remember needing to get a new tv because we had an older one that didn't have hdmi.
I'll say this, DOOM 2016's multiplayer was underrated. It was actually pretty unique and I had a lot of fun with it. But in order to play it you need adrenaline because everyone plays like Doomguy.
Doom is pretty fun to play and I definitely think you guys might like playing it, but I’m with Bethany with the amount of blood cus when I was playing it I was like oh my Gah 😂
When these trailers came out it had been 10+ years since DOOM 3 which was not super well received because it tried to take on a more survival horror vibe than the original run and gun just keep shooting style of the first 2. Needless to say when the first gameplay trailer was shown to a live audience, people absolutely lost their shit for how true to the first 2 games it was.
Doom 3, though not well received by some, were well received by others. The thing is, Doom 3 is quite similar in style to the original Doom. Doom 2016 was somewhat akin to the original Doom. But then you have Doom 2, and Doom Eternal, which are a different story, since those two games are more about the shooting, and not so much about the horror/creepy atmosphere of Doom, Doom 3 and Doom 2016. It is unfortunate that most remember Doom through the lense of Doom 2, were the shooting was more in focus.
I'm really enjoying you two, please do a video watching all the legend of neil on RUclips. So funny!!! You'll love it!!! Much love and best wishes from a new sub.
For some more Doom content, from a different time, you should watch some Doom 3 videoes, trailers and such. But more spesifically, Mesh does Doom3. Mesh does Doom3 is quite old videoes, 10-15 years old, but are videoes of a guy terrified while playing Doom 3. Today players are not freaked out by Doom 3, but back then, when it was nothing else like it, Doom 3 gave many players quite a fright.
BFG =Big Fucking Gun. Doom 2016 was surprisingly good and fun. Doom Slayer manages to have personality (quite an achievement for someone who never speaks and whose face is never seen) and is not a violent brute for no reason. It's a fun game, but Doom Eternal seemed better to me both in terms of story (which actually has its complexity and surprising moments unlike 2016 which is as simple as it is straightforward) and gameplay, apart from the platforming moments that didn't end to fit in completely, for me at least. The gameplay rewards you for being aggressive and looking for enemy executions instead of taking cover behind walls, which fits very well with the theme of the game and makes the gameplay necessarily fast and frenetic. Both are two good games, fun and frenetic.
If y'all ever decide to play DOOM, ain't no shame in picking "I'm Too Young Too Die!" It's perfect for newcomers who just want to have fun and learn the mechanics of the game.
I'll say this - for the modern Doom games, 2016 is definitely the one to play first if you're relatively new to the genre. It wasn't really concerned with outright challenging the player as it was with just keeping them on their toes while letting them kill demons largely how they wanted. There are a couple difficulty spikes, but overall, I'd bet you could probably make it through Normal (a.k.a. "Hurt Me Plenty") difficulty just fine. Eternal is when the devs started leaning into the "earn your power fantasy" mindset, and made it much harder as a result to push players into the vaunted Fun Zone.
You should play the original Doom from 1993, not because it's the most complex, infact you can't look up or down nor can you jump. But you still should check it out for some history as it is the game that revolutionized Shooter games and basically invented the First Person Shooter
Max0r makes some funny reviews. Definately recommend those he made for _DOOM Eternal_ and _Genshin_ . Speaking of _Genshin_ , you could check out the _Honkai Impact 3rd_ version PVs and 'Honkai Chronicles: Mobile Operation Centre.' That last one's good for explaining the lore. The animated shorts / CGs, meanwhile, are integrated into the game's story, and therefore contain heavy spoilers. Watching them in isolation as YT videos means also watching them without context. Except for 'Reburn,' which is non-canon, and a newer concept video that just shows a bunch of characters doing winter sports things. Everything else has spoilers though.
Just such an incredibly well-built single-player experience. Doom Eternal did a lot of awesome things for the the series and had a lot to love, but it definitely curved hard into the "arcade-y" side of gameplay with a very episodic "teleport from your hub to other zones for a mission" structure with a bunch of flashy bright stuff. Doom 2016 was much more of a cohesive streamlined campaign that felt a lot more like a real journey and narrative (though it's still organized mission-by-mission, it just feels like areas flow into each other better). I'm kinda disappointed that so MANY of these trailers were focused on the multiplayer mode...something I could not give LESS of a dang about. As the sort of guy who weeble-wobbles between 0% "dude it's just a game" competitive and 150% "I cannot STAND losing" competitive, but never wants to put in the hard hundreds of hours into a game to become godlike at it...PvP modes are something I stay very far away from. It kind of saddens me that so much of post-release development and support for the game was focused on a feature that I'd never in a thousand years end up using. Though, I guess you could say that the solo campaign was so perfect on release that aside from some minor bug-fixes and such...it didn't NEED anymore work lol, so there's that. Definitely a game I recommend if it appeals to you. If it LOOKS like something you'll enjoy, I'd be willing to bet that it IS. There are different difficulty modes IIRC, so playing it on "Easy" shouldn't be too punishing on you once you catch your stride. Yeah, you'll die...and be treated to lovely death scenes where demons rip off your limbs and beat you with them...but it's a learning curve, and you'll get there. Higher difficulties are LEGIT challenging, so probably leave those alone lol. There's no place for a sin like "pride" in a Doom game lol...just play on Easy. The game will probably make a little bit of fun of you for it (I think each difficulty has a different skull-oriented icon to represent it, and "Easy" has a baby skull wearing an army helmet lol), but if it means you can enjoy the game without dying every twelve steps you take...so what? It's a campaign worth experiencing if this sort of thing floats your boat (as it does mine!).
Hmm. Maybe easy mode could work for us although just the fast pace nature of it might ramp up the motion sickness haha. And agreed on the trailers always focusing on multiplayer. That was a bit of a letdown as we like the cinematics more and more story and what not 🤗
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames I can't say I ever experienced much in the way of motion sickness, but I can appreciate how the game may be a bit disorienting if you're particularly susceptible to that kind of thing. At the end of the day it's of course your call if you think the game is something that'll suit you, I'm just throwing my endorsement at ya. ;)
Do you guys stream on twitch, or RUclips for your friday streams? Also I like how bethany is like ken I am gonna get nightmares because of you. Meanwhile Ken: Ooooooo. Chainsaw. (Also sorry if I spelled your name wrong Bethany.
An awesome game! Absolutely spectacular. It's amazing that something as simple as shooting demons can be so fun and generate so much money world-wide. But it can and has been for over 30 years! And the music for this game. Much of it is actually now music in the sense of traditional musical instruments. It's music devices that distorts electrical signals that transports music. You guys should check out Retro Ahoy's video on how DOOM 1993 and Wolfenstein 3D 1992 was created-- it's actually quite an education and an eye-opener. I mean, there is soooo many references to things in past that has ZERO to do with gaming.
There is a lot of lore outside the game too like a 9 episode web comic detailing the disaster moments before the hero arrives and there are also two movies which I believe are on RUclips

Also the Pinky is a bull-type demon, the charges are pretty powerful.
damn, you must be really young
@@simonrockstream I'm 19, so yeah I could be called young. I hadn't really known of anything gaming related until I was roughly 13 because of a sheltered childhood so I dunno if there was anything Doom related going on before 2016-17 other than the earlier games.
😎🤟 glad you got hooked on the franchise. Did you end up going back to play any of the older games? 🤔🙂

doom is always the action pack thrill game, plus the music in the games are amazing.

With regard to the lore aspect of DOOM, the RUclips channel, ‘Midnight’ is an awesome resource; as he specializes in DOOM lore and stuff like that.
Thanks! We didn’t have that channel in our Doom list but know we do 😁
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Absolutely! You guys rock!
We are okay with some spoilers 🤗
Doom is love, Doom is life
😎🤟😁
I hadn't played doom since the first reboot in the early 2000’s and then i saw the rip and tear short bid about all the musicians in the heavy metal choir and bought the new one and just for the soundtrack in doom its worth the price.
😎🤟 soundtrack get so much love and heavy metal choir is badass 😀
This game is Epic!
Been a big fan ever since the release of the first game way back in 1993.
John Wick would be a fan of Doom 😁😎🤟
Doom is one of the best first person shooting games of all time
😎🤟
The story is actually crazy
The story of the new Doom games is a continuation of the ORIGINAL doom games from the 90s
So gist of it is (from the very start):
Doomguy gets sent to Phobos (a moon of mars) cuz he assaulted his officer as he ordered him to shoot civilians.
Then just insert the plot of Doom Eternal
Moral of the story:
Don't fucking kill bunnies
Thanks so much for the plot and story info 😀 Also, absolutely love the moral of the story 😁☺️
Interesting how the doom slayer made it this far and it all started from a mars invasion and loosing his pet rabbit
😊
If you're combining all the Doom games into 1 lore then the original start to Doom was, people were doing teleportation experiments on Mars and it's 2 moons and that teleporter opened a gateway to hell. Demons invaded and Doom Guy went in with a pistol to stop it. But the plot is really only there to have an excuse to kill things. People have found ways to fit it all in but it's confusing, doesn't really jell well when you cross games, and ultimately even in 2016 it's in the background. Hell, not even Doom Guy cares, they had to lock him in a room just to get him to listen to what's going on.
Haha, an excuse to justify killing demons works 🤗
Maxxor has a great video that does explain the lore of DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal, though it can get a bit intense in pacing
Just like Doom it seems 😅
Doom is definitely a fast paced first person shooter. You're always moving and killing. You cannot stay still or you'll get floored. If you're interested in the lore Doom 2016 is full of it.
Ah yes, the Doom Dance as it is called
Lore for sure. And maybe the cutscenes/story as this game is probably too fast for us 😂 Ken has motion sickness for first person games 🤗
You know even the multiplayer is dead I still play the snap map feature where you can play other peoples maps or create your own(even though is takes forever. But all in all DOOM is a great game definitely has replay value
i love doom thank you for uploading 😁
Our pleasure 🥳🥳
This game legit made go out and buy an Xbox One, after actually getting the game before the console and I remember needing to get a new tv because we had an older one that didn't have hdmi.
Ah yes. Pre hdmi tvs. The ones that weighed like 500 pounds for a 32 inch 😂
I'll say this, DOOM 2016's multiplayer was underrated. It was actually pretty unique and I had a lot of fun with it. But in order to play it you need adrenaline because everyone plays like Doomguy.
😂 energy drinks abound 😝
Doom is pretty fun to play and I definitely think you guys might like playing it, but I’m with Bethany with the amount of blood cus when I was playing it I was like oh my Gah 😂
Haha, yeah it might be too intense for us 🫣
This game is awesome
He should be on Mortal kombat
Please let this happen for MK 12 😁
😎🤟
The bunny story was for the old games, doom 2016 and eternal have a different story
We will always think of the bunny 🐰 ☺️
Nice gameplay!
It looks intense 😯

For some more Doom content, from a different time, you should watch some Doom 3 videoes, trailers and such. But more spesifically, Mesh does Doom3. Mesh does Doom3 is quite old videoes, 10-15 years old, but are videoes of a guy terrified while playing Doom 3. Today players are not freaked out by Doom 3, but back then, when it was nothing else like it, Doom 3 gave many players quite a fright.
Thank for the vid rec! We would’ve been one of those freaked out by Doom 3 back in the day 🫣
BFG =Big Fucking Gun.
Always interesting seeing peoples preference between Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal. Both games seem to be really high regarded either way 😀😎🤟
This is the manlest game you can play. And Doom Eternal was way more brural and filled with more action.

It's wild to think that this is now an ip owned by Microsoft/xbox
They seem to dominate the fps genre with this and Halo 😀
Thanks for the heads up! We would need a more forgiving play style at first 🙂
You should play the original Doom from 1993, not because it's the most complex, infact you can't look up or down nor can you jump. But you still should check it out for some history as it is the game that revolutionized Shooter games and basically invented the First Person Shooter
😎👍🙂
This game is just objectively good; half because the gameplay itself and half because of Mick Gordon
😎🤟🙂
We do plan to check out some Honkai and this helps with where to start 🙂
At the end of the day it's of course your call if you think the game is something that'll suit you, I'm just throwing my endorsement at ya. ;)
