There is a super interesting talk he gave at an GDC about how he made the music. Especially how he built an insane synth instrument that created the sound of the tracks. That man is a imho a genius.
This is probably the best edited reaction format I've seen. Almost no intro time, and your voice and the music is perfectly balanced, and when you jump back in the song its instant. You never pause the music to go off on a tangent either.
While I 100% agree on the quality of the reaction, a lot of times all that editing and pausing is to make sure one doesn't run afoul of copyright law. If you don't sufficiently transform a work, it can count as copyright infringement, and then you're not making any money from that video.
I beat every single official DOOM game, the music design really drives the player to push as hard as possible, with headphones and max volume I felt the overwhelming urge to pick a fight with eldrich horrors beyond human comprehension. DOOM truly makes you feel physically superior in every way through music alone. I love your music reviews, keep up the good work 👍
I mean the entire premise of the game is basically "badass demon slayer too angry to die, takes a trip to hell to kill everything there" and you're the one who gets the boss music on top of that so yeah...
A lot of people don't catch this bit. But the siren sound at 1:33 you hear behind the guitar sounds like a warped verison of the generic "Martian" music people used to use in the 50's and 60's. Like those old black and white films. This shows just how crafty Mick Gordon was when he made this song, being that the majority of the game takes place on Mars. I know it doesn't seem like it, but after a few listens you'll catch it.
I thought this was a common thought but it seems not a lot of people are picking up on it. It's one of the more recognizable parts of the track imo, in regards to relating it to real life. I didn't connect the dots as far though, and didn't realize that it was specifically "martian", which makes it even cooler.
Listening to the music straight up feels like playing the game. RIP AND TEAR UNTIL IT IS DONE! Mick Gordon is on par with Ennio Morricone or Hans Zimmer for understanding and complementing the movies/games they worked on perfectly.
The crazy part is that all of Mick's gameplay music is dynamic and can change depending on what's going on. That's the overlooked incredible aspect of his music.
That "siren like" noise you heard come in at around 1:20 is a recording of a chainsaw put through some oldschool russian equa lizer and then pitched to certain keys to be playable on a programmable piano. Mick Gordon doesnt joke around.
DOOM is just the perfect mix of non-stop action and utterly amazing music and visuals to go along with it. The more you play, the better you get, the more you feel like YOU'RE the danger. The demons aren't unleashed on Earth, you're unleashed on the demons and they'll wish those gates never opened.
I haven't heard this version is a hot minute. I've been enjoying Alex Terrible doing his demon vocal cover over this masterpiece. Even listening to this, I keep waiting for "Do you really think, I'm afraid of you?"
If you like Mick's music. I encourage everyone to check out the Killer Instinct 2013 Soundtrack. Not only did he crush it, him and the sound team worked together to make the entire game completely musically interactive. If your characters just stand there, it starts playing a slow, melodic version of the stages theme. Throw a punch and the music kicks back up. Start getting low on hp and the music gets intense. Do an ultra, and every hit becomes a musical note. It's amazing. In particular, Polemos, Type-03, Warlord (he actually played a flute made out of a human bone for this song!), Inferno.
Definitely go for "rip & tear" from doom 2016! It's my personal favorite of the soundtrack. There is a passage pretty early on where I always get the feeling Cory Tailor from Slipknot is gonna start singing 😂
You're right about how addictive it gets. In the game, the music changes with what's happening. It's a pretty awesome feeling when you dive into a giant fight and the music amps up right along with the action.
Or when you're getting your ass kicked and it drops right into the beat blast of BFG Division and that pushes you to amp UP the violence and you go from getting your ass kicked to brutalizing everything in the area and glory killing your way to full health.
@@MrKook It's probably the most insane ridiculous fun I've ever had playing a game. The way the music blends into it, comes from it, is a part of you and the mayhem... it's just pure magic.
First time I was playing the game and that crunchy part kicked in I had an insane adrenaline rush. For someone who played the original DOOM on dial-up as an eleventeen year old now playing such an awesome modern version plus this perfect soundtrack was insane.
He said in an interview once that the little bit of hangtime in the middle of the riffs was to emphasize the snare hit and make it feel much more impactful. Incredible thought process and he definitely hit it on the nose.
Such a nice reaction! I felt like I was experiencing it again for the first time. Loved your attention to detail, like the number of strings on the guitar, and your description of all the granular ear candy. As a producer myself, it was a joy. Subbed! :)
I'm no expert in the genre, but you don't have to be one to appreciate this track. There isn't any other title that comes half as close to conveying the unbridled rage of being on a heavy metal nightmare slog through Hell. This game and its score are the stuff of legends. 🤘
One of the more underrated DOOM osts that I've seen fewer music producers talk about is Vega Core. You should check it out. Also I love how the DOOM and DOOM Eternal soundtracks have elements of horror movie sounds in them with a twist: In this game, the player is the monster
The buildup of Vega Core is 10/10, but the second half of the track falls a little flat in my opinion. Still easily one of my top 3 tracks on the Doom 2016 OST though.
Mick Gordon is a fucking genius. While you're playing the game the music dynamically changes to follow the flow of the players actions, so the more intense the action on screen is the more intense the music becomes
The cool thing about DOOM(2016) is that the music is kinda interactive with the gameplay. For instance when your shooting the assault rifle if you listen carefully you can kinda hear the music playing in rhythm with your shots. And as you fire your guns more and more the music will crank up more and more.
Doom 2016 is a god tier fps game!!!! Idc what anyone says. It brings the epic metal of the 90s-early 2000s arcade shooters into the modern era. Perfectly !

So it's one thing to produce a linear track that plays the same start to finish, and it's another thing to produce a non-linear 'track' that is fed into a game system which ramps up and down the music based on what is happening, and even where you are, in the game in real time. And we're not talking just the volume, the whole tone and feel within this theme change. You've got everything from full raging cacophony to throbbing tense sound to anxious murmurs. This produced track has all of those slices (probably dozens PER 'track') that can be blended between, but all showcased in this version which we can listen to absent the rest of the game. Mick may or may not be difficult to work with depending on who you ask, but you cannot say that he is not an absolute master of this craft.

The dumb part about this music being so absolutely amazing, is that the devs didn't initially WANT this kind of music. They asked for generic techno-y background music. It will no doubt have its endeavors and ordeals, but you seem like the type to endure and create honest, good-hearted and informative content which will no doubt bring in those who wish to follow your career by the millions. I enjoyed you putting this video together and sincerely hope to see more of this. Cheers!
I always loved the *beep* just before it kicks you in the face. Goosebumps every time.
Soooooo happy you replayed that fill. Always have a drumgasm when i hear it xD
This music melts my face and I love it!
FINALLY, someone else who uses the phrase "crunchy" to describe guitar tone/music haha thank you
I really appreciate how you jump straight into the song without the typical 2+ minutes of filler for the algorithm. RUclips needs more of that.
You're amazing and so genuine keep up the great work ❤️.
