Glimmer und Gloria by Versengold. Heard it first time at SummerBreeze last year. It was my first time at a big festival and though it's not a metal song or band (folk Rock actually), that song made me join a circle pit for the first time. It was a blast!

RATATATA By Electric Callboy + Baby Metal. It has turned into the family anthem. My 3 year old son and 1 year old daughter have to start every day/weekend with the song so we can have a good dance and either wake up for the day or get excited for the weekend.

The riffs, Matts singing, this is a perfect 2000s metalcore band that can show you what there is to offer. Recommendations include: - Tears Don’t Fall - Your Betrayal - My Reverie - Raising Hell Fit For A King has recently gotten a bit softer, while still having an edge which makes them very accessible. Dual vocalists, amazing riffs and some insane breakdowns. Recommendations include: - Reaper - Bitter End - Backbreaker - When Everything Means Nothing
Some more bands that weren't mentioned here: I Prevail. Personally, I think they have fun guitar riffs. They do sing about mental illness and the stuff they went through as a band. Great songs imo: -Bow Down -There's Fear In Letting Go -Gasoline -Hurricane -Deep End Next is Wage War. Their older stuff is classic 2015 metalcore which still slaps to this day. Their newer albums are good to but more experimental, which is fine. I love this band and will always share. Great songs imo: -Manic -The River -Stitch -Low -Magnetic My final suggestion would have to be Falling in Reverse. Say what you want about Ronnie Radke (their lead singer) but that man can write music well. He's heavily inspired by rap music as well as metal. Great songs imo: -Watch The World Burn -Ronald -Popular Monster -Voices In My Head
I think what makes Electric Callboy and Babymetal and Sabaton and such great gateway bands is that they remember that metal doesn't have to be super dark, and instead are just a bundle of fun while also being incredibly skilled. It's impossible to not see Electric Callboy in wacky costumes going Choo Choo like a train in a breakdown and just not have a smile in your face. And that's sometimes sadly a lost art, the fun shows that make people want to be in a crowd to have a good time.
That's part of why I gravitate toward power metal and symphonic metal; the fun and generally upbeat atmosphere. Sabaton puts on a helluva fun and high energy show.
I was a teenaged metalhead in the 80s. Metal is so diverse now. Orbit Culture to White Chapel, Sleep Token to Poppy, Northlane to Spirit box, Mastodon to Release the Archers. It's an exciting time for Metal Lovers. Truly something for everyone. Love your content. Stay safe out there.

Babymetal do so many sub genres of metal like alternative metal, death metal, power metal, nu metal, speed metal, hard rock, metalcore, djent and progressive rock, as a gateway band they probably have done more to expose new listeners to the different types of metal than any other of the bands on this list, there aren't many bands with J-Pop roots that have made new fans of metal like Babymetal has.
Absolutely. I'm pained to admit my early reactions to BM were exactly like Tank said: I thought they were a marketing gimmic and a novelty. It took me until early 2023 to admit I'd been wrong, to see that they are genuine and passionate about their music, and most of all evolving and experimenting even further. Got mad respect for BabyMetal nowdays 🤘

It's embarrassing to admit, but I had the same preconception around Babymetal until Ratatata, and some random comment said that they've been making music and touring for around a decade now. Saw the tweets from Rob Zombie and other 'old school' metal artists during that time but still wrote them off as a gimmick group. 10 years, 4 albums, a handful of singles, and a long list of tours is a _long_ list for a gimmick band to keep knocking about. Decided to put my biases aside and track down some translated videos to give them an honest shot. There were a couple of songs that I just didn't mesh with (like Megitsune), but there's a couple that I did (like Headbanger and Pa Pa Ya). Will be exploring more in the future and even if it's only a handful of songs that I enjoy, the amount of work they put in is crazy, based off of the videos of their live shows. They work hard, party hard, and seem to have hearts of gold and there's nothing more metal then that.

Megitsune is one of the first things a LOT of people mentioned to watch before other songs of theirs 😀 Megitsune is currently even my Number 1 Song of the Band. I CAME across Babymetal some time ago, but was, sadly, extremely biased about metal. I couldn't even get into German Metal Bands 🤣 as a German myself. I saw a recommandation on RUclips but never clicked on it. It took me around 8-10 years and a Song called "Ratatata" to look into Babymetal and finding Electric Callboy, which i never heard of but currently LOVING. I even made a Tracklist of only those both bands and their best songs that i am listening to while falling into sleep. 😅
I would throw in a band like Amaranthe into a list like this. Very clearly pop-influenced, the three vocalists (male and female cleans and harshes), and just overall easy to listen to while still being very much a metal band.
I remember something funny happened in 2019 when Babymetal had 2 opening bands: Amaranthe and Sleep Token, the Babymetal fans who liked Amaranthe didn't like Sleep Token, the Babymetal fans who liked Sleep Token didn't care for Amaranthe. 🙂
While I did listen to some metal, Amaranthe actually got to listen to other bands. Their covers of PowerWolf and Sabaton got me listening to those bands.
I saw Bloodywood live in 2023 and they completely blew me away, I never knew that it was a style of metal that I needed in my life and their first album has been on repeat non stop for me.
I was a little bit irritated about Nickelback (Funfact: first Bandname was "The Village Idiots" ;-)) And then the at the suggested Songs there was no "St. Quentin" oder "Burn it to the Ground" ^^ BTW my personal Gateway Band was "Blind Guardian" and for the hard stuff the old "Killswitch Engage" and the old "In Flames"

The Warning, they're a three sister hard rock band from Mexico that can get pretty metal -- they;re young ranging from 24-19 but they have been around for over 10 years with 2 ep's and 4 albums in their discography. They first came to fame 10 years with a cover of Enter Sandman that went viral--they were even invited to participate by Metalica to participate on their Black List album in 2021. Their latest album was released last month and a few songs on it along with many of their earlier songs can be a good intro for metal newbies
Two recommendations from the latest album: Sharks (definitely numetal flavor) and Automatic Sun (a bit of pop flavor but downtuned guitar and bass, it’s sort of a gateway song).

I know a few people who got into metal via Symponic Metal. For example Within Temptation, who were among the first to break out of the mold with the collaboration with Xzibit. Also, folk metal. Feuerschwanz are growing a lot in recent years and are invited to huge festivals.
Oh for sure. There are definitely some symphonic metal bands that have gotten people more into metal. I think we'd be lying if we said Nightwish, Within Temptation, and Epica weren't some of those bands.
My son started listening to metal out of the blue couple months ago. Yesterday I told him in the car to put some good song on. He put on Outnumbering the day by Bloodbath. So you don't always need gateway bands, LOL.
While it is true that there are some gatekeeping *beep*s in the metal community, overall the majority of metalheads are the nicest, most accepting, supportive and friendly people that have ever walked this earth! Going to a metal festival, you're pretty much guaranteed to make a ton of new friends for life! It's without a doubt the best community I have ever been a part of!
I remember being at a Wedding, and randomly met this guy wearing a Machine Head Tie, and if you didn't knew the MH logo, you would never know, and we ended up talking for hours about Metal.
I may be older or less on-line because I remember when heavy metal was really popular and really commercial. The people who think metal is underground and makes them special are idiots who were born yesterday and don't know the house they are trying to keep the gate of. Say real traditional metalheads, those who listened to Metallica & Motörhead & co in the 1980s, tend to have been dumbfounded, shocked & then conquered by Babymetal.
My gateway band to the entire heavy music world was Skillet when I was a freshman in high school. I have them to thank for opening a door for me to all the music I adore now, extreme, lighter, old and new.
Skillet is actually a good shout for a gateway band for a lot of people, especially people that may be exclusively listening to Christian rock and metal at the time.
Skillet was my gateway band as well. Can’t say I listen to them often anymore, but they’ll always have a special place in my heart because they are what got me into heavy music.

On sleep token, some of my favourite songs ever are actually thier songs Rain and Ascenionism. Those hold a deep meaning to me. Definitaly woth checcking out and they're doing a lot for the genre. They're also the band that got my sister into metal, from a massive swifty to a metalhead.
BABYMETAL have owned the spring/summer, IMO. While it started at the start of the new year with BMTH finally releasing a professional live version of "Kingslayer," things ramped up with "Leave It All Behind" with F.Hero and Bodyslam, and then peaked with the "other" song of the summer (aside from "Not Like Us"), "Ratatata" with Electric Callboy. And now with weekly releases from their live dvd where we get adult BABYMETAL versions of songs they recorded as teens and tweens. It's BABYMETAL and The One's universe, we just live in it. 🦊🤘🦊

I'd say Ghost is also a good gateway band to metal. Seeing how some of their songs have been trending on TikTok and their catalog having wide variety of songs from more pop oriented songs like Mary On A Cross, Dance Macabre and Square Hammer to some darker and heavier songs like Mummy Dust, Cirice, Faith and Twenties it's easy to find something for everyone. Also the fact that they are playing arenas everywhere they go shows just how popular they've become and at their shows I've seen both metalheads and younger teen girls to whom Ghost was their first rock/metal concert.
Surprised Tank didn't mention them either. Very metal friendly band with a great live show to boot! I personally know a lot of people who are now into metal thanks to Ghost.
I feel like Ghost is a little hit or miss with the general populace due to some of their satanic imagery and lyrics. Personally I don't have a strong tie to religion, but a non or new metalhead might feel awkward about it simply because making fun of religion has been marketed to be bad, even if you aren't religious yourself. That said, Dance Macabre, Cirice, Spillways, and Absolution are good songs that I like!
So glad someone else has brought this up. Ghost was 100% my gateway band back in 2018 and they're now the back patch on my vest, alongside other bands like Belphegor, Whitechapel, Hypocrisy, and Taake. None of which I would've ever gotten into if it hadn't been for Ghost. I know metal elitists love to hate Ghost but they're doing a lot for the metal scene.
Babymetal quickly skyrocketed to my all time top 5 over the last year aince discovering them. I have not felt such desire to binge and learn about a band like this since i was a kid, their music is a breath of fresh air and would recommend them to everyone.
Just wait until you see them live if you haven't yet. It's a whole 'nother level. Rob Zombie was not bullshxtting..the energy of the band and the fans at their shows is off the charts. I've seen them 4 times and they haven't let up a bit.

Sabaton and Blind Guardian got me into metal. Wish i had teachers that had as much enthusiasm about history as they do. Blind Guardian on the other hand makes so many D&D games better.
Blind Guardian and Rhapsody of Fire were the ones that got me into power metal and the incredible fun that fantasy metal is. I've always thought that playing in a dnd campaign in Rhapsody's world would be insane, but to go through all their music to listen for lore bits is a task I just don't really know how to begin lol
Metalhead from the 80s here. I completely understand and support those picks. And I have a polarizing pick for the comment section- Voice of Baseprot. I don't believe they have an album yet, but hearing such metal chops come from teenage girls give me hope for the future!
For people who think its bias you saying Electric callboy, I would point out that they are reversing the order of how things have gone. You aren't saying these things because you are the tour manager of electric callboy. You are the touring manager of electric callboy partially due to the fact that you have been saying these things for years.
And Babymetal is assisting as they can. They had problems with gatekeepers from their Intention till sick new days this year when their collabs started to get much more recognition.

My wife and I recently saw Halestorm, I am from a town that is near Halestorms home town. They are coheadlining this tour with I Prevail. I just did a bit of a deep dive into their songs and I am really into this band, in fact I just discovered can u see me in the dark the song by I Prevail and Halestorm. Man, Lzzy and Eric sound good together.
I don't have anything negative to say about any of the bands you mentioned. Including Nickelback. But since you asked for more suggestions, I would add The Hu, Jinjer, and Nightwish. I personally am not a fan of Nightwish, but I understand the appeal and for people who are fans of more symphonic stuff I would totally recommend them. The World Folk Metal of the Hu is something i even got my 74-year-old aunt into so much she went to see them live. And Jinjer is just awesome with absolute world class musicians and like with Courtney and Spiritbox, Tatiana has gotten many young girls into metal. My gateway band was GWAR. I'm really screwed up.
I agree on the Nightwish. I am a big fan of Nightwish, since 2001 when my (at that time) young niece turned me on to them. I am not a member of the Nightwish Army, tho. I roll my eyes on channels where most members only talk about Nightwish. But yes, Nightwish's music can be very 'easy on the ears' and with their addition of Troy on various instruments have given much of their sound a Celtic feel to it. They played at the local State Theater here back in 2018, and many, many people at that show were locals that go to every concert at that venue, just because it's local, they had no idea who Nightwish is. The buzz I got from talking to people during intermission and after the show was a 'wow, these guys (and gal) are very good! How come I've never heard of them before?"
Last year at Rockville... two choices at the same time... The Hu or Janes Addiction. I liked Janes back in the day and never saw them live so it was a bucket list thing for me. But there's something about bands who are 30+ years old and don't age well. Sorry Perry - you sounded like shit (from the recordings I watched afterwards)... The Hu it was and they were fuckin' awesome!
My gateway band back in the day, was Nightwish. I mainly listened to Techno and house music back in the early 2000's as I was a preteen and it was popular. But my first experience with Ghost Love Score, and Phantom of the Opera, and Nemo, and Wishmaster by Nightwish turned my world around. They are still one of my favorite bands 20 years later, and often one I recommend to friends who want to try metal.

My gateway band was Sabaton. They sing great songs about true events in Various wars and I was never into history until they came along they are also just nice guys and they all have a good sense of humor, something I never thought about. 😊😊
Tried Sabaton and kinda bounced but will give them another listen. Also Tory Bruno, CEO of United Launch Alliance, is a huge fan so anyone that launches massive rockets and missiles for a living being into a band is a big thumbs up!
@@RojCowles Try to find video of their 20 year anniversery Concert at the 2019 Wacken, which celebrated 30 year that year. It is a 2 hour show on 2 stages with 2 different sets of Sabaton that plays together for the longest time of this amazing concert. I get goosebumps just writing about it. Or their 2012 concert at the Polish Festival of Woodstock. It was a great concert as well with a lot of people. Yes, I am a Sabaton-fan. My gateway band was actually Sabaton. I listen to more metal than Sabaton. They want to entertain their audience both with show and music. I hope you like them.
BABYMETAL got a ton of nasty & completely unfair criticism in the early days but persevered and rose to the top through determination, hard work & sheer talent. They have yet to record a bad song. I saw them at their paradigm shifting Sonisphere festival appearance in 2014. It’s been absolute love ever since. There’s barely a day passes I don’t listen to at least one of their songs. They blow 99.9% of other bands right off the stage.
For me it was a Christian Rock band called Red. Their songs are all over the place. They play heavy, beautiful, catchy and all combined together type of songs. 5 Years later I been getting into Deathcore, thank you Red
Very familiar with Red, as they are one of the first bands I ever toured with. And I can definitely see how they’re a great gateway band for a lot of people.
DUDE same here. I heard Red in an old Call of Duty Montage (maybe it was IReapz, forgot who it was) and while I didn’t love the harsh vocals at the time, it definitely helped send me on that path
Not new to metal and never watched this channel before but just curious if there’s anything that piques my interest. I’m an old school thrash and death fan but enjoy Electric Callboy, Baby Metal and Motionless in White to name a few that are still considered to be newer/newish to the scene.
Electric Callboy is currently my absolut favorite band. I've been listening to them since like 2015 when my new boyfriend showed me MC Thunder. Now this guy is my fiancé and we're visiting a concert of them every time they're near (or we're combining this with a nice vacation). They're for me the definition of fun metal and I can't help but be happy when listening to them!
I appreciate that you also included some "harder" stuff on here. You and I don't really share the same taste in metal. But its amazing to hear you talk so passionate about it. I thing the strong point about this list is the fact that all bands regularly bring out new music. And I just want to say when you introduced Nickleback I giggled like a little girl.what was everyone's gateway band into metal? Mine was Chimaira, this was in a not so nice time in my life.
I would say Rammstein does the same as BabyMetal. They can bring people into Metal with their Stage show alone. Overall good suggestions you have there. Obliviously there are a ton more and some might even be only for certain Countries. I never heard of Bilmuri and you might not have heard of ASP or Mono Inc. from germany. I don't mind Nickelback. I put them in the same vain as Ghost. A lot of Metalheads (especially the "elitists") don't count them as Metal due to their mainstream success and more softer songs. At the end it also depends what you usually listen to. If you're into folk, great, there is Feuerschwanz or Saltatio Mortis. If you into country, great there is Bourbon Boys (from sweden) and while you listen to them check out the other bands of the leadsinger (Raubtier & Hulkoff) Gavin aka MiracleOfSound is also great to bring people to the heavier side. It's not the heaviest but that isn't most of Nightwish either.
As a German I can only emphasize how many people I know going to Rammstein concerts that are not metalheads in the slightest. I don't know if it brings them to listen to more metal, though. It's more like there's this huge German band that isn't normally my style but is like a guilty pleasure. But they don't seem interested to take it farther from there.
Im a Sabaton And LP Guy myself. I was (still am) very history interested and was researching Fritz Haber for a Presentation i had to hold. I found Father by sabaton by coincidence... It didnt take long before i had 3 CDs in my Room. And since my Mom is a Die-Hard Linkin Park Fan and my Father is a Iron Maiden Fan, i guess the Metal-Blood did run in the Family. I quickly stepped up from BMTH to EC, then to Architects, Spiritbox, Elwood Stray and The Narrator _(< Support your locals :D)_ and then to thrown and In Flames... The list goes on...
Pretty surprised to see Spiritbox over Bad Omens and Bring Me The Horizon. They use harsh vocals quite a bit more, and I've found that to be the major turnoff for non or new metalheads.

Thank you so much for this list ♥ going to see Sleep Token in November and didn't know who Bilmuri was, now I know what I'll have to listen to ! I'd like to add 2 gateway bands I think are also important right now in the scene : Bad Omens & Bring Me The Horizon. Bad Omens : just like Sleep Token, they blew up totally after the release of their last album, The Death of Peace of Mind. They had the exact same growth for the same reasons, because their sound brought a lot of non-metal listener to listen to metal (thanks to Tiktok/Instagram again !). I've been to several shows since that album was out, and the crowd was a mix of absolutely every kind of people. Kids, grannies, tough cliché metalheads etc. They also stir up a lot of love/hate on internet because people fight to know if they're "a real metal band" or not. They weren't super into collabs before, but lately they've done a lot of collabs and all of them are from a different genre of music. Can't wait to see who they'll work with soon ! Bring Me The Horizon : another loved/hated band in the community lol. Their sound evolves every single time they release something, but their new concept (the Post Human series) made them blow up even more than before. They collaborated with Lil Uzi Vert (twice ! 1 song on their record, 1 on Lil Uzi Vert's), Aurora, Babymetal (as you said !), Underoath, Glassjaw, Corpse and many more in the last 2-4 years. Just like with Bad Omens, I saw with my own eyes how diverse the crowd was, and the best thing is...they know their fans are used to different genre because of them, so they try to bring a lot of different bands on tour ! As they're a gateway band for non metalheads, it also works the other way round : a lot of metalheads started to listen to other genre thanks to them. I may not be a typical metalhead, but I absolutely LOVE to see these kind of bands bringing new people in ! I love seeing my fav bands get noticed, fill up entire stadiums, and I absolutely LOVE talking about them to the newcomers, especially when the bands have a lot of lore behind them (like Sleep Token or currently BMTH !). I couldn't agree with you more. I was more into rock in my early days and now I can go listen to BMTH's old music, for instance Pray For Plagues, and think it's an absolute banger. BMTH, Bad Omens and Sleep Token even helped me love other types of genres. Metal is definitely a genre you need to ease into and each band listed here and in the video was so on point.
YES to Nickelback! I have always defended them. Electric Callboy and Babymetal are also fantastic examples. Spiritbox is amazing, saw them at Aftershock.
I got into metal the old fashioned way. My then 16 year old brother turned the then 10 year old me onto Black Sabbath. My brother moved on from metal, but I've remained a metalhead for the past 53 years. I love the fact that metal is always changing and evolving. If you don't like one particular subgenre, you can find another subgenre more to your liking.
My Gateway to Metal was Helloween from Germany and Metallica. Meanwhile i am listening to so many Metal Genres… and i still find new bands and styles thanks to people like Tank! Metal is so much more and i am proud to be a part of this Metal scene. Finally normal people! 😂❤
My gateways started with Linkin Park in the early 2000s, and as I got older I started listening to Escape The Fate (it amuses me that I listened to Ronnie back then and now I still am in FiR), Bullet for My Valentine, and some smaller bands like Flyleaf. Nowadays my playlist is filled with stuff like Spiritbox, ERRA, As Everything Unfolds, Future Palace, Red Handed Denial, and some symphonic metal (mostly Epica) sprinkled in.
I'm a metal head since the 1990's (yes I'm old) and in my opinion 2 things are important when introducing metal to people who don't listen to metal. The song(s) must be melodic and minimal or no harsh vocals. Especially the latter is a downer which turn people away. Also a bit surprised that Unleash the Archers is not on the list. They have some really good songs for soon to be metal heads.
@@darkoxygen8079 And that was kind of the point here. My wife, when we met, could NOT listen to any of the heavier metal bands that I was into. But I eased her in with stuff that wasn't AS heavy, with little to minimal harsh vocals, and she slowly started getting on board.
For me I dig it most when there is both. Yin and yang, right? The contrast and the swings are what I love. If it's 100% harsh or 100% clean I get bored. Variety please!
Agreed. when I was first getting into metal I loved the heavy instrumentals, but the harsh vocals turned me away from a lot of it, to the point I was wanting bands to release instrumental versions of their songs. Ironically though, I haven't listened to the instrumental release of Pain Remains, because these days I will listen to somebody that sounds like a garbage disposal and not care lol. Pain Remains was also one of my favorite releases of 2022 so I don't know why I haven't listened to the instrumental version yet.
Motörhead always has and will be my top band. Sabaton even covered a Motörhead song "1916". Watching the video I heard BabyMetal and my ears perked up. I started getting into J-ROCK since 2020. Band-Maid "Order", Aldious "We Are", Bridear "BRAVE NEW WORLD REVISTIED", Lovebites "Rising", Brats "Ms. Downer", Ungrila "大問題エマージェンシー!! (Dai Mondai Emergency!!)" , Fern Planet "ソルジャーガールズ (Soldier Girls)", etc...
I totally agree with Nickelback being a great gateway band to metal. Let's be real. Most Metalheads who hate Nickelback do so either because the guys have success or because they never listened to anything from them besides their "radio songs".
I never got why people singled them out as any worse than any of the other buttrock bands. They're all equally as bad. If I'm thinking of bottom of the barrel buttrock, I'd put staind in the number one spot. Not Nickelback.
Feuerschwanz is has become my gateway band. I was trying to research older German Metal bands for a theory I had about "The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet," and Das Elfte Gebot was in a recommended playlist. I'm also writing a high fantasy book right now, and one of my first thoughts was, OMG, this is what I want my music in the world I've created to sound like.
One thing to remember about getting into metal or any music really is that it’s not always one band and then you’re in. I had to get into different individual pieces of bands like Breaking Benjamin, Linkin Park, Pierce The Veil, Trivium, and all the bands soundtracking old Call of Duty montages before I started to get it and warm up to the music (in particular, the harsher vocal style). And even then, I’m still trying to get into types of metal that it seems like everyone else already has but I struggle (Converge of all bands is actually that band for me). Metal is like a new food, sometimes it takes a long time to figure out you like something but that moment is worth all the effort!
I can assure you that all of the people you know that like Converge...did NOT like them at first...well, maybe like three of them did😆😆... Converge is very dense thematic(? words are hard for me) and from a composition standpoint...First time I ever heard them was around '97-'98 when they were touring "Petitioning the Empty Sky" I just didnt understand what they were trying to do. that all changed when they put out "Jane Doe"...First time I played that CD it was all over😆😆 Loved them ever since Side note: Bassist Nate has another band named Doomriders, and that band is the perfect bridge between hard rock and metal...Check out "Darkness Come Alive"
Ooh! Yeah thats definitely another band on the list! It's real metal and bloody good, and their sound uses so much of the classic '90s/'00s style. Brilliant tunes and very accessible for regular pop music fans

Not just cause they are Welsh like my self but they mix elements of reggae, punk, metal and dance together to form a quite unique sound. I know Skindread because Nobody was in Need for Speed Underground 2. I need to listen to them more. I was driving some friends around recently, and Ratrace came on, and my one friend was disappointed that he had never come across them before.
One of the huge things we are also seeing is the internationalisation of metal, which is opening folks to new sounds influenced by cultural sounds 'outside' the 'local'. I simply love this, and I agree that Bloodywood exemplifies this.

Also, when mentioning Sabaton, maybe Ice Nine Kills could have fit as well? Since they're doing something similar, but instead of history, they're doing horror. I'm not quite sure though, maybe a bit too, for lack of a better word, weird for beginners?
Watching this made me try to remember what my gateway was. I believe I fully started listening to metal around 2001-2002 around my brother and the bands I mostly listened to back then were Korn,Slipknot,Sepultura,Rammstein,Limp Bizkit,Linkin Park,Metallica and Rob Zombie.There were definitely more, but those stood out the most
Gateway bands for me were Starset, Nightwish, Blackbriar and Beast in Black. I also recommend Blackbriar for beginning metalheads because it is very atmospheric with a lot of clean vocals. Oh and the Call Of Duty Zombies easter egg songs lured me further into metal, I used to not like them because of the harsh vocals but as I got more into metal it is those songs that actually made me like harsh vocals. And I know there is probably a few gamers out there that got into metal because of Call Of Duty, it is what made me aware of Avenged Sevenfold as well.
My gateway band was Black Veil Brides. Back in the day someone had told me they didn't know who Linken Park was (and I only knew two songs from them at the time) so I looked up In The End to send to my friend and BVB In The End was 2 or 3 weeks new so it was the top of RUclips so I thought if it's above Linken Park it has to be good, I listened to it and fell in love IMMEDIATELY.

Hell, I'm old enough that AC/DC was my gateway band. Every gateway band leads to young people listening to more metal, leads to some of those young people going to gigs (money into the industry) and some thinking I can do that (leading to more creativity and new bands). Me, I'm tired of just listening to the old 'classic' bands. I remember when Slipknot was 'new and nu-metal was uncool'. Now Knotfest is an institution that brought the first true metal festivals to my home in Australia. Festivals which sell out, purely because of the many new and interesting sounds in the total metal genre today.

to be perfectly honest with you, I'm a 90s kid and all the bands you mentioned I know - at least their big hits (some more, some less) but even for me they still sound "old". Not in a demeaning way, but the style changed so much over the years, that it's not rly fair to just call all these bands, old and new, "metal", even though they technically are ^^
Hey, I wanna say this was actually a really good video. Glad you mentioned your bias early on as that kept things in context and you're clearly talking about active and more recent bands rather than nu metal or classical bands like say avenged sevenfold or linkin park which are more like stepping stones into metal rather than gateway bands. I was also surprised by nickelback having heavy songs, I did not know those even existed, while that doesn't undo how overplayed photograph is, it does please the soul to know it exists. My own personal gateway band was tenacious D as a teenager, not strictly metal, but rock enough to get me listening to heavier songs and onto system of a down and slipknot and then full on lamb of god and children of bodom. I think another gateway band for nowadays could be something in the vain of set it off, scene queen or bring me the horizon they play pretty well produced sounds that cen get people in and onto more raw stuff later on.
I was going to say I Prevail, too, but I held my tongue because of their songs like Body Bag and Visceral. Then I remembered that they also have a lot of easy-listeners like Hurricane, Low, Scars, Black Space, and Bad Things.
My Gateway to Metal was Powerwolf. I coincidentally got one of their songs recommended by my music app and fell in love with them at first glance. Attila has one of the best voices in metal. And they have awesome shows. The songs are live better than on record, in my opinion.
Great list, I think. My daughters actually got into metal thanks to Polyphia. Then they found out they collabed with Babymetal, then they found out Babymetal collabed with Bring Me, and Electric Callboy. So fun to see them tumbling through the rabbit hole. :)
I love that metal bands are so open to collaborating with each other these days. It's great for the genre to have these bands chain into each other like that.
A couple of weeks ago I had the chance to see Polyphia. It was glorious to have my daughters in front of me completely going wild. Proud father moment for sure. :)
Also worth mentioning on the Babymetal front, their newest member Momo actually does some killer growl vocals. The version of Headbanger where she got to take the lead was awesome.
I love Bilmuri too. But I hate that the RUclips algorithm now thinks that I'm interested in lawn mowing and other gardening stuff, after watching Bilmuri music videos.

Fully agree with the Bands mentioned. Other great examples for gateway bands: The biggest one for sure and without a doubt right now is Turnstile. While they are more a hardcore band, they get someone completely bonkers slots at festivals, even outside of the genre, introducing people who never came into contact with heavier music before. They literally had the fifth slot on Sunday at Rolling Loud last year, and coheadlined one of Germanys biggest festivals while Avril Lavigne was playing the second stage at the same time. Also they performed at a lot of tv shows. Turnstile - Mystery/Holiday/Blackout/T.L.C. For me, the band "Story of the year" was one of the most important gateway-bands, back in the day when I was a teenager. I still enjoy their music to this day, cause they stayed true to their sound and it just brings back so many good memories of somewhat better times.

Bullet, Rise Against, Linkin Park got me hooked back when I was a kid. Nowadays Thrown, Lorna Shore, Wage War, Architects dominate my playlists. I brought many friends to metal through those bands and some you mentioned. I absolutely dig the energy and euphoria new listeners bring to concerts. It’s an exciting time for sure!
I been listening to rock and metal for around 2 years now but i mostly listen to older music and never know where to start when it comes to the newer stuff. I do like bands like NOTHING MORE and Motionless in White.
There's a reason I didn't get into the Metal community, and it's because of how people reacted to me saying Linkin Park is my favorite band. Calling me a "poser", and that LP is a "trashy, fake metal band" (at most, nu metal, I agree that they aren't a metal band, but not that they're trashy, they just didn't stick to their one hit wonder genre, which I find very respectable) Thank for the recommendations, and I'll definitely check them out, but I'm not joining the Metal community anytime soon.

My gateway band is definitely Babymetal, I discovered them in 2020 (I was more into rock bands at that time, like Queen) but didn't get into more metal bands until late 2023. From what I noticed, I seem to like "contrasts" in music and a quite diverse artist discography (Babymetal for example has songs that are cute/j-idol like and brutal heavy at the same time), so I guess that also reflected in my preference in metal. That could explain my obsession with EC recently lol some bands that I also got into starting from last year are Sabaton, Nightwish, Epica, Wind Rose, Hanabie, Synsnake, & Bilmuri. It's quite over the place. I think it's also worth mentioning that the reason I got into Nightwish is because of this song that has a "symphonic metal" feel by Dreamcatcher (a kpop girl group who incorporates rock elements, sometimes even metal, in their music. yes that exist) and a lot of people mentioned Nightwish in the comments so I checked them out 😆

As you mentioned, Babymetal, I would suggest the bands that I was led on to via them , Band Maid, Lovebites, Hanabie, Maximum the Hormone, etc. In my mind, just because they are singing (majoritly in a different language), it is the meolody and the music that counts. Also, Kanami is a genius in songwriting, soundscape, and structure and has totally changed my view on heavy rock music. It doesn't need to be in the "Chart" structure it can be anything you want. Gatekeepers can just shut up if you are that narrow-minded in your music choice. I feel very sad for them. I am in my late 50s and have had an amazing music journey from AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Saxon, etc, to now loving Japanese metal and hard rock.
And going back to the past: X-Japan for example, was huge in Japan even among non-metal heads and which might not be very current. But their are no harsh vocals which is the things some people have a hard time with.
I'm a conflicted fan of Band-Maid. I got into them after seeing some TV show clip where Kanami had a silly guitar competition with Ningen Isu's Shinji Wajima and I was blown away by her improvisation, so I had to check our her work with her band. But in many songs, especially newer ones, I'm bothered by Saiki's voice. It's not even that she is not talented, it's just personal taste, she developed a very particular style that is not comfortable to my ears. No wonder my favourite Band-Maid song is the instrumental track "onset" (which I must have played hundreds of times).
I think the whole country metal genre is about to blow up. Lately I have been listening to a lot of Lakeview, Hardy and Royale Lynn. You couldn’t get me to listen to anything remotely country when I was younger. But this metal/hard rock blend with the country vocals goes so well together.

I was already listening to metal bands like Sabaton, Amon Amarth, In Flames, mostlty Viking/Pagan Metal and Melodic (Death) Metal. But for a long time i was not getting warm with all of the metalcore around 2009-2012. But then i found Electric Callboy and saw that they have a small concert in my hometown for 20 bucks or so and i went there. Was one of my best live concert in life, because the whole venue was partying and after that i explored more and more of the metalcore scene, love the music of it nowadays and found so many nice bands in this subgenre!
Personally, as someone who loves BABYMETAL and has seen them live multiple times, I would never, under any circumstances, reccommend "Gimme Chocolate" to someone I'm trying to get into them. It's one of the last songs I'd pick for a first play to that person if I wanted to interest them, or rather, not turn them away. It's amazing live, it's an ok album song when you get used to it, but I believe that for a regular person it's too idol-y and childish to tell them "yeah this is babymetal btw". It's not. That one song is the reason why I thought, for years, that it's not a group for me and I had to re-discover them around the time PA PA YA released realizing that they actually slap. Hard. But yeah maybe it's just my opinion

I agree. It's to extreme of a song i think. To much time is wasted trying to tell people why they shouldn't judge a group on one song. Monochrome live at PIA would be a better first reaction IMO. Great song, not to extreme and great crown participation. Shows you enough to impress, whilst leaving room for future surprises.
To each his own. Gimme Chocolate is definitely the most shocking intro possible. But I know plenty of people who have seen it first and then went on to check out some more mature song of theirs and were impressed.
@@Daneelro There's also plenty of fans who heared it first and didnt bother to check them out for months or years afterwards and regreted it. The main issue now is, it doesn't represent them anymore, and confuses the reactor on a timescale basis. It even causes hostility if the reactor resorts to racial stereotypes to explain what he is seeing. We see this mostly with GC. All this would be mainly avoided if Divine attack or Monochrome were selected. More reactors would actually concentrate on the music.
GC is a good intro for young, and I mean really young, people. This song and Doki Doki Morning I played in the car and now my 7 year old is certified metalhead. Her favourite songs are Megitsune and BMC and she *loves* RATATATA. I think you're right it depends heavily on the existing music taste of the person - you have to know where you're bringing them in from, and there will definitely be a BABYMETAL song to start them on.
Sabaton brought me into metal when I was around 12 years old (I'm 17 now) and I listen to quite everything metal now. Sabaton was the most important band for me to get into metal and to enjoy everything I listen to in music today.🤘🔥

Resist and Disorder by Rezodrone from the Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack. This game is a masterpiece also for tieing in fantastic music with the gameplay, which also can be listened to outside of it. My playlist of Cyberpunk tracks is my most listened to on Spotify this year.
Glimmer und Gloria by Versengold. Heard it first time at SummerBreeze last year. It was my first time at a big festival and though it's not a metal song or band (folk Rock actually), that song made me join a circle pit for the first time. It was a blast!

RATATATA By Electric Callboy + Baby Metal. It has turned into the family anthem. My 3 year old son and 1 year old daughter have to start every day/weekend with the song so we can have a good dance and either wake up for the day or get excited for the weekend.

I think what makes Electric Callboy and Babymetal and Sabaton and such great gateway bands is that they remember that metal doesn't have to be super dark, and instead are just a bundle of fun while also being incredibly skilled. It's impossible to not see Electric Callboy in wacky costumes going Choo Choo like a train in a breakdown and just not have a smile in your face. And that's sometimes sadly a lost art, the fun shows that make people want to be in a crowd to have a good time.
I saw ec in a festival recently and you could tell even the locals where having fun
Thats why EC is so great, they just make you smile, constantly.
That's part of why I gravitate toward power metal and symphonic metal; the fun and generally upbeat atmosphere. Sabaton puts on a helluva fun and high energy show.

Babymetal do so many sub genres of metal like alternative metal, death metal, power metal, nu metal, speed metal, hard rock, metalcore, djent and progressive rock, as a gateway band they probably have done more to expose new listeners to the different types of metal than any other of the bands on this list, there aren't many bands with J-Pop roots that have made new fans of metal like Babymetal has.
Absolutely. I'm pained to admit my early reactions to BM were exactly like Tank said: I thought they were a marketing gimmic and a novelty. It took me until early 2023 to admit I'd been wrong, to see that they are genuine and passionate about their music, and most of all evolving and experimenting even further. Got mad respect for BabyMetal nowdays 🤘

It's embarrassing to admit, but I had the same preconception around Babymetal until Ratatata, and some random comment said that they've been making music and touring for around a decade now. Saw the tweets from Rob Zombie and other 'old school' metal artists during that time but still wrote them off as a gimmick group. 10 years, 4 albums, a handful of singles, and a long list of tours is a _long_ list for a gimmick band to keep knocking about.
Decided to put my biases aside and track down some translated videos to give them an honest shot. There were a couple of songs that I just didn't mesh with (like Megitsune), but there's a couple that I did (like Headbanger and Pa Pa Ya). Will be exploring more in the future and even if it's only a handful of songs that I enjoy, the amount of work they put in is crazy, based off of the videos of their live shows. They work hard, party hard, and seem to have hearts of gold and there's nothing more metal then that.

Megitsune is one of the first things a LOT of people mentioned to watch before other songs of theirs 😀 Megitsune is currently even my Number 1 Song of the Band. I CAME across Babymetal some time ago, but was, sadly, extremely biased about metal. I couldn't even get into German Metal Bands 🤣 as a German myself. I saw a recommandation on RUclips but never clicked on it. It took me around 8-10 years and a Song called "Ratatata" to look into Babymetal and finding Electric Callboy, which i never heard of but currently LOVING. I even made a Tracklist of only those both bands and their best songs that i am listening to while falling into sleep. 😅
I would throw in a band like Amaranthe into a list like this. Very clearly pop-influenced, the three vocalists (male and female cleans and harshes), and just overall easy to listen to while still being very much a metal band.

I remember something funny happened in 2019 when Babymetal had 2 opening bands: Amaranthe and Sleep Token, the Babymetal fans who liked Amaranthe didn't like Sleep Token, the Babymetal fans who liked Sleep Token didn't care for Amaranthe. 🙂
While I did listen to some metal, Amaranthe actually got to listen to other bands. Their covers of PowerWolf and Sabaton got me listening to those bands.

I saw Bloodywood live in 2023 and they completely blew me away, I never knew that it was a style of metal that I needed in my life and their first album has been on repeat non stop for me.

The Warning, they're a three sister hard rock band from Mexico that can get pretty metal -- they;re young ranging from 24-19 but they have been around for over 10 years with 2 ep's and 4 albums in their discography. They first came to fame 10 years with a cover of Enter Sandman that went viral--they were even invited to participate by Metalica to participate on their Black List album in 2021. Their latest album was released last month and a few songs on it along with many of their earlier songs can be a good intro for metal newbies
Two recommendations from the latest album: Sharks (definitely numetal flavor) and Automatic Sun (a bit of pop flavor but downtuned guitar and bass, it’s sort of a gateway song).
Their more hard rock/butt rock, but so are Nickelback. I'll accept The Warning way more.

I know a few people who got into metal via Symponic Metal. For example Within Temptation, who were among the first to break out of the mold with the collaboration with Xzibit.
Also, folk metal. Feuerschwanz are growing a lot in recent years and are invited to huge festivals.

Oh for sure. There are definitely some symphonic metal bands that have gotten people more into metal. I think we'd be lying if we said Nightwish, Within Temptation, and Epica weren't some of those bands.

My son started listening to metal out of the blue couple months ago. Yesterday I told him in the car to put some good song on. He put on Outnumbering the day by Bloodbath. So you don't always need gateway bands, LOL.
While it is true that there are some gatekeeping *beep*s in the metal community, overall the majority of metalheads are the nicest, most accepting, supportive and friendly people that have ever walked this earth! Going to a metal festival, you're pretty much guaranteed to make a ton of new friends for life! It's without a doubt the best community I have ever been a part of!
I remember being at a Wedding, and randomly met this guy wearing a Machine Head Tie, and if you didn't knew the MH logo, you would never know, and we ended up talking for hours about Metal.

My gateway band to the entire heavy music world was Skillet when I was a freshman in high school. I have them to thank for opening a door for me to all the music I adore now, extreme, lighter, old and new.
Skillet is actually a good shout for a gateway band for a lot of people, especially people that may be exclusively listening to Christian rock and metal at the time.
Fusions between different genres is necessary. In fact numetal wouldn't exìst without it

On sleep token, some of my favourite songs ever are actually thier songs Rain and Ascenionism. Those hold a deep meaning to me. Definitaly woth checcking out and they're doing a lot for the genre. They're also the band that got my sister into metal, from a massive swifty to a metalhead.
BABYMETAL have owned the spring/summer, IMO. While it started at the start of the new year with BMTH finally releasing a professional live version of "Kingslayer," things ramped up with "Leave It All Behind" with F.Hero and Bodyslam, and then peaked with the "other" song of the summer (aside from "Not Like Us"), "Ratatata" with Electric Callboy. And now with weekly releases from their live dvd where we get adult BABYMETAL versions of songs they recorded as teens and tweens. It's BABYMETAL and The One's universe, we just live in it. 🦊🤘🦊

I'd say Ghost is also a good gateway band to metal. Seeing how some of their songs have been trending on TikTok and their catalog having wide variety of songs from more pop oriented songs like Mary On A Cross, Dance Macabre and Square Hammer to some darker and heavier songs like Mummy Dust, Cirice, Faith and Twenties it's easy to find something for everyone. Also the fact that they are playing arenas everywhere they go shows just how popular they've become and at their shows I've seen both metalheads and younger teen girls to whom Ghost was their first rock/metal concert.

I feel like Ghost is a little hit or miss with the general populace due to some of their satanic imagery and lyrics. Personally I don't have a strong tie to religion, but a non or new metalhead might feel awkward about it simply because making fun of religion has been marketed to be bad, even if you aren't religious yourself. That said, Dance Macabre, Cirice, Spillways, and Absolution are good songs that I like!
I'm not trying to be an "elitist" but just pointing out the fact that Ghost is not Metal, they are just Dadrock (boomer rock)
So glad someone else has brought this up. Ghost was 100% my gateway band back in 2018 and they're now the back patch on my vest, alongside other bands like Belphegor, Whitechapel, Hypocrisy, and Taake. None of which I would've ever gotten into if it hadn't been for Ghost. I know metal elitists love to hate Ghost but they're doing a lot for the metal scene.
Babymetal quickly skyrocketed to my all time top 5 over the last year aince discovering them. I have not felt such desire to binge and learn about a band like this since i was a kid, their music is a breath of fresh air and would recommend them to everyone.
Just wait until you see them live if you haven't yet. It's a whole 'nother level. Rob Zombie was not bullshxtting..the energy of the band and the fans at their shows is off the charts. I've seen them 4 times and they haven't let up a bit.

Sabaton and Blind Guardian got me into metal. Wish i had teachers that had as much enthusiasm about history as they do. Blind Guardian on the other hand makes so many D&D games better.
Blind Guardian and Rhapsody of Fire were the ones that got me into power metal and the incredible fun that fantasy metal is. I've always thought that playing in a dnd campaign in Rhapsody's world would be insane, but to go through all their music to listen for lore bits is a task I just don't really know how to begin lol

You aren't saying these things because you are the tour manager of electric callboy. You are the touring manager of electric callboy partially due to the fact that you have been saying these things for years.

My wife and I recently saw Halestorm, I am from a town that is near Halestorms home town. They are coheadlining this tour with I Prevail. I just did a bit of a deep dive into their songs and I am really into this band, in fact I just discovered can u see me in the dark the song by I Prevail and Halestorm. Man, Lzzy and Eric sound good together.
I don't have anything negative to say about any of the bands you mentioned. Including Nickelback. But since you asked for more suggestions, I would add The Hu, Jinjer, and Nightwish. I personally am not a fan of Nightwish, but I understand the appeal and for people who are fans of more symphonic stuff I would totally recommend them. The World Folk Metal of the Hu is something i even got my 74-year-old aunt into so much she went to see them live. And Jinjer is just awesome with absolute world class musicians and like with Courtney and Spiritbox, Tatiana has gotten many young girls into metal.

I agree on the Nightwish. I am a big fan of Nightwish, since 2001 when my (at that time) young niece turned me on to them. I am not a member of the Nightwish Army, tho. I roll my eyes on channels where most members only talk about Nightwish.
But yes, Nightwish's music can be very 'easy on the ears' and with their addition of Troy on various instruments have given much of their sound a Celtic feel to it.
They played at the local State Theater here back in 2018, and many, many people at that show were locals that go to every concert at that venue, just because it's local, they had no idea who Nightwish is. The buzz I got from talking to people during intermission and after the show was a 'wow, these guys (and gal) are very good! How come I've never heard of them before?"
The Hu go in that same category with Bloodywood and System Of A Down. Rare bands doing something actually unique that no one else is doing.

Last year at Rockville... two choices at the same time... The Hu or Janes Addiction. I liked Janes back in the day and never saw them live so it was a bucket list thing for me. But there's something about bands who are 30+ years old and don't age well. Sorry Perry - you sounded like shit (from the recordings I watched afterwards)... The Hu it was and they were fuckin' awesome!
My gateway band back in the day, was Nightwish. I mainly listened to Techno and house music back in the early 2000's as I was a preteen and it was popular. But my first experience with Ghost Love Score, and Phantom of the Opera, and Nemo, and Wishmaster by Nightwish turned my world around. They are still one of my favorite bands 20 years later, and often one I recommend to friends who want to try metal.
I was heavily into the German Schlager scene and happened upon "Hurrikan" by EC oh my goodness next thing I'm a metalhead.😂😂

I'm 63, I got into metal when I was around 11 or 12. I still love metal, I listen everyday.
My gateway band was Sabaton. They sing great songs about true events in Various wars and I was never into history until they came along they are also just nice guys and they all have a good sense of humor, something I never thought about. 😊😊
Tried Sabaton and kinda bounced but will give them another listen. Also Tory Bruno, CEO of United Launch Alliance, is a huge fan so anyone that launches massive rockets and missiles for a living being into a band is a big thumbs up!
@@RojCowles Try to find video of their 20 year anniversery Concert at the 2019 Wacken, which celebrated 30 year that year. It is a 2 hour show on 2 stages with 2 different sets of Sabaton that plays together for the longest time of this amazing concert. I get goosebumps just writing about it. Or their 2012 concert at the Polish Festival of Woodstock. It was a great concert as well with a lot of people. Yes, I am a Sabaton-fan. My gateway band was actually Sabaton. I listen to more metal than Sabaton. They want to entertain their audience both with show and music. I hope you like them.

BABYMETAL got a ton of nasty & completely unfair criticism in the early days but persevered and rose to the top through determination, hard work & sheer talent. They have yet to record a bad song. I saw them at their paradigm shifting Sonisphere festival appearance in 2014. It’s been absolute love ever since. There’s barely a day passes I don’t listen to at least one of their songs. They blow 99.9% of other bands right off the stage.
The metal community is such a supportive and accepting place, it sucks that gatekeeping is our Achilles heel. Great stuff Tank!

For me it was a Christian Rock band called Red. Their songs are all over the place. They play heavy, beautiful, catchy and all combined together type of songs. 5 Years later I been getting into Deathcore, thank you Red
Very familiar with Red, as they are one of the first bands I ever toured with. And I can definitely see how they’re a great gateway band for a lot of people.

DUDE same here. I heard Red in an old Call of Duty Montage (maybe it was IReapz, forgot who it was) and while I didn’t love the harsh vocals at the time, it definitely helped send me on that path
I like the fact that RED’s lyrics can appeal to both secular and Christian audiences.
Not new to metal and never watched this channel before but just curious if there’s anything that piques my interest. I’m an old school thrash and death fan but enjoy Electric Callboy, Baby Metal and Motionless in White to name a few that are still considered to be newer/newish to the scene.
Electric Callboy is currently my absolut favorite band. I've been listening to them since like 2015 when my new boyfriend showed me MC Thunder. Now this guy is my fiancé and we're visiting a concert of them every time they're near (or we're combining this with a nice vacation). They're for me the definition of fun metal and I can't help but be happy when listening to them!
They are my second favorite as of my discovering then 3 weeks ago. #1 is The Warning of course

I would say Rammstein does the same as BabyMetal. They can bring people into Metal with their Stage show alone.
Overall good suggestions you have there. Obliviously there are a ton more and some might even be only for certain Countries. I never heard of Bilmuri and you might not have heard of ASP or Mono Inc. from germany.
I don't mind Nickelback. I put them in the same vain as Ghost. A lot of Metalheads (especially the "elitists") don't count them as Metal due to their mainstream success and more softer songs.
At the end it also depends what you usually listen to. If you're into folk, great, there is Feuerschwanz or Saltatio Mortis. If you into country, great there is Bourbon Boys (from sweden) and while you listen to them check out the other bands of the leadsinger (Raubtier & Hulkoff)
Gavin aka MiracleOfSound is also great to bring people to the heavier side. It's not the heaviest but that isn't most of Nightwish either.
And Rammstein has the added bonus of making foreigners to listen to a band that sings in German without the benefit of having subtitles 😎

As a German I can only emphasize how many people I know going to Rammstein concerts that are not metalheads in the slightest. I don't know if it brings them to listen to more metal, though. It's more like there's this huge German band that isn't normally my style but is like a guilty pleasure. But they don't seem interested to take it farther from there.

I was (still am) very history interested and was researching Fritz Haber for a Presentation i had to hold. I found Father by sabaton by coincidence... It didnt take long before i had 3 CDs in my Room.
And since my Mom is a Die-Hard Linkin Park Fan and my Father is a Iron Maiden Fan, i guess the Metal-Blood did run in the Family.
I quickly stepped up from BMTH to EC, then to Architects, Spiritbox, Elwood Stray and The Narrator _(< Support your locals :D)_ and then to thrown and In Flames...
The list goes on...
Pretty surprised to see Spiritbox over Bad Omens and Bring Me The Horizon. They use harsh vocals quite a bit more, and I've found that to be the major turnoff for non or new metalheads.
I think also Bad omens are a bit better to enter new people into metal.
It can help to ease people into harsh vocals for example the song Yours Is An Empty Hope by Nightwish got me into liking harsh vocals more.

I'd like to add 2 gateway bands I think are also important right now in the scene : Bad Omens & Bring Me The Horizon.
Bad Omens : just like Sleep Token, they blew up totally after the release of their last album, The Death of Peace of Mind. They had the exact same growth for the same reasons, because their sound brought a lot of non-metal listener to listen to metal (thanks to Tiktok/Instagram again !). I've been to several shows since that album was out, and the crowd was a mix of absolutely every kind of people. Kids, grannies, tough cliché metalheads etc. They also stir up a lot of love/hate on internet because people fight to know if they're "a real metal band" or not. They weren't super into collabs before, but lately they've done a lot of collabs and all of them are from a different genre of music. Can't wait to see who they'll work with soon !
Bring Me The Horizon : another loved/hated band in the community lol. Their sound evolves every single time they release something, but their new concept (the Post Human series) made them blow up even more than before. They collaborated with Lil Uzi Vert (twice ! 1 song on their record, 1 on Lil Uzi Vert's), Aurora, Babymetal (as you said !), Underoath, Glassjaw, Corpse and many more in the last 2-4 years. Just like with Bad Omens, I saw with my own eyes how diverse the crowd was, and the best thing is...they know their fans are used to different genre because of them, so they try to bring a lot of different bands on tour ! As they're a gateway band for non metalheads, it also works the other way round : a lot of metalheads started to listen to other genre thanks to them.
I may not be a typical metalhead, but I absolutely LOVE to see these kind of bands bringing new people in ! I love seeing my fav bands get noticed, fill up entire stadiums, and I absolutely LOVE talking about them to the newcomers, especially when the bands have a lot of lore behind them (like Sleep Token or currently BMTH !). Again, thank you for this video and its positive message ♥
I couldn't agree with you more. I was more into rock in my early days and now I can go listen to BMTH's old music, for instance Pray For Plagues, and think it's an absolute banger. BMTH, Bad Omens and Sleep Token even helped me love other types of genres. Metal is definitely a genre you need to ease into and each band listed here and in the video was so on point.
YES to Nickelback! I have always defended them. Electric Callboy and Babymetal are also fantastic examples. Spiritbox is amazing, saw them at Aftershock.
I got into metal the old fashioned way. My then 16 year old brother turned the then 10 year old me onto Black Sabbath. My brother moved on from metal, but I've remained a metalhead for the past 53 years. I love the fact that metal is always changing and evolving. If you don't like one particular subgenre, you can find another subgenre more to your liking.
Sabaton reintroduced me to metal after many years. It's about two years later and I (at 50) am taking metal-focused guitar lessons each week.
My Gateway to Metal was Helloween from Germany and Metallica. Meanwhile i am listening to so many Metal Genres… and i still find new bands and styles thanks to people like Tank! Metal is so much more and i am proud to be a part of this Metal scene. Finally normal people! 😂❤

I love Electric Callboy, BabyMetal, Powerwolf, Sabton, StarSet, Ice Nine Kills, Nightwish, Epica, Linkin Park, Spirit Box, Bad Omen. I love Metal.
My gateways started with Linkin Park in the early 2000s, and as I got older I started listening to Escape The Fate (it amuses me that I listened to Ronnie back then and now I still am in FiR), Bullet for My Valentine, and some smaller bands like Flyleaf.
Nowadays my playlist is filled with stuff like Spiritbox, ERRA, As Everything Unfolds, Future Palace, Red Handed Denial, and some symphonic metal (mostly Epica) sprinkled in.
Mick Gordon with Doom 2016 and Skillet were my gateway into metal.
I'm a metal head since the 1990's (yes I'm old) and in my opinion 2 things are important when introducing metal to people who don't listen to metal. The song(s) must be melodic and minimal or no harsh vocals. Especially the latter is a downer which turn people away.
Also a bit surprised that Unleash the Archers is not on the list. They have some really good songs for soon to be metal heads.
800% agree with "minimal or no harsh vocals". That's also been the biggest dealbreaker in my experience when I play metal for other people.

Agreed. when I was first getting into metal I loved the heavy instrumentals, but the harsh vocals turned me away from a lot of it, to the point I was wanting bands to release instrumental versions of their songs. Ironically though, I haven't listened to the instrumental release of Pain Remains, because these days I will listen to somebody that sounds like a garbage disposal and not care lol. Pain Remains was also one of my favorite releases of 2022 so I don't know why I haven't listened to the instrumental version yet.
Motörhead always has and will be my top band. Sabaton even covered a Motörhead song "1916".
Watching the video I heard BabyMetal and my ears perked up. I started getting into J-ROCK since 2020.

I totally agree with Nickelback being a great gateway band to metal. Let's be real. Most Metalheads who hate Nickelback do so either because the guys have success or because they never listened to anything from them besides their "radio songs".

I never got why people singled them out as any worse than any of the other buttrock bands. They're all equally as bad. If I'm thinking of bottom of the barrel buttrock, I'd put staind in the number one spot. Not Nickelback.
Feuerschwanz is has become my gateway band. I was trying to research older German Metal bands for a theory I had about "The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet," and Das Elfte Gebot was in a recommended playlist. I'm also writing a high fantasy book right now, and one of my first thoughts was, OMG, this is what I want my music in the world I've created to sound like.
One thing to remember about getting into metal or any music really is that it’s not always one band and then you’re in. I had to get into different individual pieces of bands like Breaking Benjamin, Linkin Park, Pierce The Veil, Trivium, and all the bands soundtracking old Call of Duty montages before I started to get it and warm up to the music (in particular, the harsher vocal style). And even then, I’m still trying to get into types of metal that it seems like everyone else already has but I struggle (Converge of all bands is actually that band for me). Metal is like a new food, sometimes it takes a long time to figure out you like something but that moment is worth all the effort!
I can assure you that all of the people you know that like Converge...did NOT like them at first...well, maybe like three of them did😆😆... Converge is very dense thematic(? words are hard for me) and from a composition standpoint...First time I ever heard them was around '97-'98 when they were touring "Petitioning the Empty Sky" I just didnt understand what they were trying to do. that all changed when they put out "Jane Doe"...First time I played that CD it was all over😆😆 Loved them ever since Side note: Bassist Nate has another band named Doomriders, and that band is the perfect bridge between hard rock and metal...Check out "Darkness Come Alive"

I'd strongly put skindred in the gateway to metal argument here. Not just cause they are Welsh like my self but they mix elements of reggae, punk, metal and dance together to form a quite unique sound. Personal suggestions on where to start

2.) pressure
3.) warning
4.) Doom riff
5.) set fazers fe burn

I know Skindread because Nobody was in Need for Speed Underground 2. I need to listen to them more. I was driving some friends around recently, and Ratrace came on, and my one friend was disappointed that he had never come across them before.
Skindred are one of my absolute favorite bands, I've seen them nearly 30 times now and still get stupidly excited for their shows.
One of the huge things we are also seeing is the internationalisation of metal, which is opening folks to new sounds influenced by cultural sounds 'outside' the 'local'. I simply love this, and I agree that Bloodywood exemplifies this.

Watching this made me try to remember what my gateway was. I believe I fully started listening to metal around 2001-2002 around my brother and the bands I mostly listened to back then were Korn,Slipknot,Sepultura,Rammstein,Limp Bizkit,Linkin Park,Metallica and Rob Zombie.There were definitely more, but those stood out the most
Gateway bands for me were Starset, Nightwish, Blackbriar and Beast in Black. I also recommend Blackbriar for beginning metalheads because it is very atmospheric with a lot of clean vocals. Oh and the Call Of Duty Zombies easter egg songs lured me further into metal, I used to not like them because of the harsh vocals but as I got more into metal it is those songs that actually made me like harsh vocals. And I know there is probably a few gamers out there that got into metal because of Call Of Duty, it is what made me aware of Avenged Sevenfold as well.

My gateway band was Black Veil Brides.
Back in the day someone had told me they didn't know who Linken Park was (and I only knew two songs from them at the time) so I looked up In The End to send to my friend and BVB In The End was 2 or 3 weeks new so it was the top of RUclips so I thought if it's above Linken Park it has to be good, I listened to it and fell in love IMMEDIATELY.

Hell, I'm old enough that AC/DC was my gateway band. Every gateway band leads to young people listening to more metal, leads to some of those young people going to gigs (money into the industry) and some thinking I can do that (leading to more creativity and new bands). Me, I'm tired of just listening to the old 'classic' bands.
I remember when Slipknot was 'new and nu-metal was uncool'. Now Knotfest is an institution that brought the first true metal festivals to my home in Australia. Festivals which sell out, purely because of the many new and interesting sounds in the total metal genre today.
my boomer-me is all sad, because the classic bands that got me into Metal aren't mentioned, e.g. Blind Guardian, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Deep Purple, Metallica, Pantera and so on and so forth.

I am a huge fan of essentially every band that you listed, but like the guy below me said they do sound like they're from a period of time in the past. Even newish blind guardian sounds like it's from 20 years ago. And that's what's great about it but I also understand why Tank would definitely want to go with current day bands
to be perfectly honest with you, I'm a 90s kid and all the bands you mentioned I know - at least their big hits (some more, some less) but even for me they still sound "old". Not in a demeaning way, but the style changed so much over the years, that it's not rly fair to just call all these bands, old and new, "metal", even though they technically are ^^

Hey, I wanna say this was actually a really good video. Glad you mentioned your bias early on as that kept things in context and you're clearly talking about active and more recent bands rather than nu metal or classical bands like say avenged sevenfold or linkin park which are more like stepping stones into metal rather than gateway bands. I was also surprised by nickelback having heavy songs, I did not know those even existed, while that doesn't undo how overplayed photograph is, it does please the soul to know it exists.
My own personal gateway band was tenacious D as a teenager, not strictly metal, but rock enough to get me listening to heavier songs and onto system of a down and slipknot and then full on lamb of god and children of bodom.
I think another gateway band for nowadays could be something in the vain of set it off, scene queen or bring me the horizon they play pretty well produced sounds that cen get people in and onto more raw stuff later on.
Definitely should include some bmth, bad omens and I prevail, maybe we could have a 2nd episode some day !

I was going to say I Prevail, too, but I held my tongue because of their songs like Body Bag and Visceral. Then I remembered that they also have a lot of easy-listeners like Hurricane, Low, Scars, Black Space, and Bad Things.
My Gateway to Metal was Powerwolf.
I coincidentally got one of their songs recommended by my music app and fell in love with them at first glance.
Attila has one of the best voices in metal.
And they have awesome shows. The songs are live better than on record, in my opinion.
Great list, I think. My daughters actually got into metal thanks to Polyphia. Then they found out they collabed with Babymetal, then they found out Babymetal collabed with Bring Me, and Electric Callboy. So fun to see them tumbling through the rabbit hole. :)

I love that metal bands are so open to collaborating with each other these days. It's great for the genre to have these bands chain into each other like that.

Also worth mentioning on the Babymetal front, their newest member Momo actually does some killer growl vocals. The version of Headbanger where she got to take the lead was awesome.

The biggest one for sure and without a doubt right now is Turnstile. While they are more a hardcore band, they get someone completely bonkers slots at festivals, even outside of the genre, introducing people who never came into contact with heavier music before. They literally had the fifth slot on Sunday at Rolling Loud last year, and coheadlined one of Germanys biggest festivals while Avril Lavigne was playing the second stage at the same time. Also they performed at a lot of tv shows.

For me, the band "Story of the year" was one of the most important gateway-bands, back in the day when I was a teenager. I still enjoy their music to this day, cause they stayed true to their sound and it just brings back so many good memories of somewhat better times.
They are fantastic! And was quited shocked that they are still around when I got them on my Release Radar 😂

Sleep Token were support act to BABYMETAL in 2019 at Brixton Academy, London. I didn't understand them then, but now I listen to them more and more.
Bullet, Rise Against, Linkin Park got me hooked back when I was a kid. Nowadays Thrown, Lorna Shore, Wage War, Architects dominate my playlists. I brought many friends to metal through those bands and some you mentioned.
I absolutely dig the energy and euphoria new listeners bring to concerts. It’s an exciting time for sure!
I been listening to rock and metal for around 2 years now but i mostly listen to older music and never know where to start when it comes to the newer stuff. I do like bands like NOTHING MORE and Motionless in White.
There's a reason I didn't get into the Metal community, and it's because of how people reacted to me saying Linkin Park is my favorite band. Calling me a "poser", and that LP is a "trashy, fake metal band" (at most, nu metal, I agree that they aren't a metal band, but not that they're trashy, they just didn't stick to their one hit wonder genre, which I find very respectable)

My gateway band is definitely Babymetal, I discovered them in 2020 (I was more into rock bands at that time, like Queen) but didn't get into more metal bands until late 2023. From what I noticed, I seem to like "contrasts" in music and a quite diverse artist discography (Babymetal for example has songs that are cute/j-idol like and brutal heavy at the same time), so I guess that also reflected in my preference in metal. That could explain my obsession with EC recently lol some bands that I also got into starting from last year are Sabaton, Nightwish, Epica, Wind Rose, Hanabie, Synsnake, & Bilmuri. It's quite over the place.
I think it's also worth mentioning that the reason I got into Nightwish is because of this song that has a "symphonic metal" feel by Dreamcatcher (a kpop girl group who incorporates rock elements, sometimes even metal, in their music. yes that exist) and a lot of people mentioned Nightwish in the comments so I checked them out 😆
Already a massive Electric Callboy fan (Also thanks to Tank!), but added all the other recommendations into a Spotify playlist. Looking forward to diving in!

As you mentioned, Babymetal, I would suggest the bands that I was led on to via them , Band Maid, Lovebites, Hanabie, Maximum the Hormone, etc. In my mind, just because they are singing (majoritly in a different language), it is the meolody and the music that counts. Also, Kanami is a genius in songwriting, soundscape, and structure and has totally changed my view on heavy rock music. It doesn't need to be in the "Chart" structure it can be anything you want. Gatekeepers can just shut up if you are that narrow-minded in your music choice. I feel very sad for them. I am in my late 50s and have had an amazing music journey from AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Saxon, etc, to now loving Japanese metal and hard rock.
And going back to the past: X-Japan for example, was huge in Japan even among non-metal heads and which might not be very current. But their are no harsh vocals which is the things some people have a hard time with.
I'm a conflicted fan of Band-Maid. I got into them after seeing some TV show clip where Kanami had a silly guitar competition with Ningen Isu's Shinji Wajima and I was blown away by her improvisation, so I had to check our her work with her band. But in many songs, especially newer ones, I'm bothered by Saiki's voice. It's not even that she is not talented, it's just personal taste, she developed a very particular style that is not comfortable to my ears. No wonder my favourite Band-Maid song is the instrumental track "onset" (which I must have played hundreds of times).

I think the whole country metal genre is about to blow up. Lately I have been listening to a lot of Lakeview, Hardy and Royale Lynn. You couldn’t get me to listen to anything remotely country when I was younger. But this metal/hard rock blend with the country vocals goes so well together.

I was already listening to metal bands like Sabaton, Amon Amarth, In Flames, mostlty Viking/Pagan Metal and Melodic (Death) Metal. But for a long time i was not getting warm with all of the metalcore around 2009-2012. But then i found Electric Callboy and saw that they have a small concert in my hometown for 20 bucks or so and i went there. Was one of my best live concert in life, because the whole venue was partying and after that i explored more and more of the metalcore scene, love the music of it nowadays and found so many nice bands in this subgenre!
Personally, as someone who loves BABYMETAL and has seen them live multiple times, I would never, under any circumstances, reccommend "Gimme Chocolate" to someone I'm trying to get into them. It's one of the last songs I'd pick for a first play to that person if I wanted to interest them, or rather, not turn them away.
It's amazing live, it's an ok album song when you get used to it, but I believe that for a regular person it's too idol-y and childish to tell them "yeah this is babymetal btw". It's not. That one song is the reason why I thought, for years, that it's not a group for me and I had to re-discover them around the time PA PA YA released realizing that they actually slap. Hard.
But yeah maybe it's just my opinion

I agree. It's to extreme of a song i think. To much time is wasted trying to tell people why they shouldn't judge a group on one song. Monochrome live at PIA would be a better first reaction IMO. Great song, not to extreme and great crown participation. Shows you enough to impress, whilst leaving room for future surprises.
To each his own. Gimme Chocolate is definitely the most shocking intro possible. But I know plenty of people who have seen it first and then went on to check out some more mature song of theirs and were impressed.
@@Daneelro There's also plenty of fans who heared it first and didnt bother to check them out for months or years afterwards and regreted it. The main issue now is, it doesn't represent them anymore, and confuses the reactor on a timescale basis. It even causes hostility if the reactor resorts to racial stereotypes to explain what he is seeing. We see this mostly with GC. All this would be mainly avoided if Divine attack or Monochrome were selected. More reactors would actually concentrate on the music.
GC is a good intro for young, and I mean really young, people. This song and Doki Doki Morning I played in the car and now my 7 year old is certified metalhead. Her favourite songs are Megitsune and BMC and she *loves* RATATATA.
I think you're right it depends heavily on the existing music taste of the person - you have to know where you're bringing them in from, and there will definitely be a BABYMETAL song to start them on.
Sabaton brought me into metal when I was around 12 years old (I'm 17 now) and I listen to quite everything metal now. Sabaton was the most important band for me to get into metal and to enjoy everything I listen to in music today.🤘🔥
