Tbf i have seen some reactions where they like to pull up the lyrics as they listen. And ik people like that irl who will look up the lyrics the first time they listen. People value different things in music and there are a lot of people who put lyricism and poetry high on the list.

    • @TheJokesterSCR
      @TheJokesterSCR Год назад +2

@@jleighwolfe True, but a lot of times it's just super obvious when somebody has heard a song already. I'm gonna be starting a channel soon and I'm purposefully gonna start with a lot of music that I already have heard and make it known that I've heard it already, but I still enjoy doing deep dives and commenting on music that I love. Like Alex said, I want people to come back for my personality and not necessarily just to listen to music. I spend way more time than I care to admit watching reactions and it's getting all too common where somebody clearly gets WAY too hype. It's like they try to use the NoLifeShaq method of standing up and acting so shocked by everything but they take it to a whole other extreme and it's annoying AF. I immediately notice that and never watch their channel again. Authenticity is key.

What I enjoy the most from reaction videos is the "innocence" factor of the reactors. First there are the "old" songs I listened to when I was young. It is fun to see the appreciation and the amazement I once felt in those days. In one way I can "re-experience" the works through the reactor's eyes and heart which also serves the sense of nostalgia.
Then there are the "technical" reactors who brings up their technical views on it. (some of them having played in metal bands themselves, some others are vocal coaches, others are working within a studio as producer) Sometimes they are pointing to musical details never noticed by myself for a decade or longer.

I didn’t catch this myself until someone else pointed it out, but this is why it’s so important to distinguish between what the interviewee is actually saying and what blanks are being filled by the reporter. The reporter said “labels,” while David only said “they all.” As he clarified in his conversation with Alan, the “they all” referred to some no-name indie labels, talent agencies, and management companies, not any major record labels. Sure, you could say David should have preemptively clarified this when he first shared the video, but honestly I can see how he might not have foreseen they way this would blow up.
And it occurred to me that maybe the reason David got these requests when bigger channels didn’t is because of the fact that he frequently reacts to songs with audio only, whereas most reactions focus on videos, and the groups these agencies are pushing don’t have any high quality videos.

I'm late to the party but I have to say great conversation and I totally agree with Alex about why people stick with a specific reactor is totally down to the person presenting their views. As a Nightwish fan pretty much since they started, I found you through that big influx of reactions to Ghost Love Score that all seemed to come out around the same time.
I love seeing people "discover" Nightwish for the first time (irrespective of which lead vocalist is singing) but I stayed (and joined your Discord/Patreon) because of YOUR opinions and insights into what you were listening to.
I've got five or six reactors that I constantly follow and each of those is because of the unique information or insight the reactor is giving me on either a song I already know well or as an introduction to an artist I've never seen before.
I spent 20 years as a journalist and we had a similar relationship with publicists and music labels, we never were paid to do reviews but if we wanted a "free" CD or album or tickets to a gig, it would be on condition of a review then being published and that's the symbiosis of the relationship.

One thing that struck me about the "Fox" interview with the David Heretic guy, was just how easily if you switch the two parts around it gives a very different perspective, for example the way we were shown it from the news segment was pretty much:
"being offered money to review certain bands/songs (but I said no)" followed with "in a way [reaction channels] are the new musical journalism", filling the space that used to be taken with NME, Melody Maker, and other magazines etc, and even the music tv channels.
Now, I'm not saying this is the case, it's just a random, half thought through, embryotic hypothesis, but what if the conversation was phrased more like:
'Reaction channels are basically the modern version of old analogue musical journalism, they fill the niche previously held by magazines etc ... in that context it would likely financially make sense if reactors were incentivised to react and respond to certain bands or songs, at a certain time in a certain way such as being paid or given a script.'
I am not saying this is the case. I am just trying to point out that it really doesn't take much editing and the media like Fox news can pretty much rearrange the order of the conversation and have their guests say whatever they want them to say.

Some years back I worked in gaming, specifically promotion, and paying to do scripted gameplay videos and streams absolutely was a thing. Exactly bullet point lists and example sentences (which would look great when "quoted" in marketing). I never used such services, but I learned pretty quick which networks and channels would only cover our games for money. A clear difference to the ones that are actually interested in games and covering stuff for their audience. I would be astounded if exactly the same wasn't going on in music promotion.

The gaming industry doesn’t surprise me, and I think that’s pretty well known. But music? The profit is so much lower that no label I’ve talked to has said they’d even consider putting that into their marketing budget. In my experience, I’ve never had a record label offer me direct payment for a reaction. They usually only offer for the video to be whitelisted so we can monetize from ads. And that right there makes me also think why would a label ever pay their money when they could just whitelist a video and the person gets paid from AdSense.

Breaking preconceptions (presumptions) is one of the most entertaining reactions: the stronger the assumptions the more entertaining the reaction when those assumptions are broken. And some genres gain stronger prejudgemental attitudes for sure..
Analytical videos are at their best when they point out things you didn't know yourself even if the video or the song is familiar: when you can appreciate the music more after watching an analysis that is a well done video.
And then there's reviews where you want a "second opinion": these are most like traditional music journalism where the music is graded and evaluated by different factors. Reviews when done well have a breakdown of the whole (composition, instrumentation, performance..) by different aspects.
So the reactions can cater to different audiences and piling them all together is a problem. The personality of the channel matters, but so does the content: sometimes it is really interesting to see analysis of something you have no idea about, but other times you just want the entertainment or validation of opinions. When a channel can combine all three in interesting, entertaining and in-depth that is a channel that will get you certainly coming back for both things you have seen and things you haven't seen before, and that is a really really rare thing.

  • @mariohnyc

Personally, i think reactors have the potential to expose a band to a new audience and that exposure will lead to new fans. That brings value, and in the age of analytics, that line of thinking can be proven or disproven by the data. Also, because a reactor may create value to a company, that doesn't necessarily mean the company will or should compensate the reactor.

He may not have the visuals you both have with Alex but his reviews are always honest and he is not overexcited when he hears something good. I respect him for doing natural and professional reactions with each video. So you should take off the visuals aside and give him credits about what he is doing because he deserves that. Due to Mr Rock n Roll i was introduced to Nightwish (Ghost Love Score) back in 2019 and down the rabbit hole, I went. I believe Floor is the greatest female vocalist I've ever heard. I have downloaded most of their albums/songs from apple. That singular reaction has led me to Alex, Tank, the Charismatic Voice, and many others which have led me to sooooooo many different bands that aren't mainstream in the U.S. For instance Sabaton, Amaranthe, Unleash the Archers, and Aryeon. Reactors have a major place in the industry just don't sell out ( hate just for views or pretend like for the same). That being said there are reactors that review songs that I know very well and if they are legitament (you can tell if its fake) I enjoy the sheer action/enjoyment of new music.

I loved this conversation. It was a bit funny because I'm a subscriber to both you and Alex, and the David the Heretic, and I appreciate all three channels for what they offer. I have to agree that as a viewer what attracts me most is the host of the reaction channel, his eloquency and authenticity, even if it can give some overreacting attitudes! I really value it when his words, enthusiasm, reaction puts a smile on my face. In a way you become part of our lives, a pen-pal with whom we have this "weird" type of connection. And yes, it's true, I've silently cursed when you stop the music video to comment - because right at that moment we are two "friends" sharing/enjoying and headbaning at the same song, as if we were in a club, or a concert! - but after all, the video is about your reaction! So yeah, keep on sharing we us!

tank was one of the first reactors i got started on, and we actually had a short back and forth over a band i liked and he didnt. but he was honest enough to get back to me and say he didnt care for them.i havent heard of alex hefner, but i kinda watch certain videos because im new to this, like 2 years and 2 bands are currently keeping my attention. ive learned that not everyone is gonna like what ido, and i live with it tanks knowledge of gear drew my attention as well. very good and honest commentary on the subject. thanks guys keep up the good work
