Country Guitar Tech Watches Stevie T's "How To Be Country" Video

- Musician/RUclipsr Stevie T recently put out a video called "How To Be Country", listing all the things you have to do to be a country music star. But is he right? This former Country Music Guitar Tech breaks down the video to see how accurate it is.
[ERROR/FACT CORRECTION]
At 3:34 in the video when talking about Country artists using stage names or variations of their names, I listed Tim McGraw's real name as being "Samuel Timothy Smith". While that is the legal name that he was born with, he did legally change it to "McGraw" later in life after meeting his biological father, MLB pitcher "Tug" McGraw.

Thanks for the critique, Tank!! I was genuinely curious how this would be received by someone who has worked in the industry. Glad to see I nailed it, for the most part!! Ironically, country is my least favorite genre... 🤣
someone legit called your smart acoustic a wii u guitar
I mean, it’s my least favorite genre and I worked in it for 6 years. 😂 But seriously dude, get into writing for country artists. This would be a smash!
Country music is where the money is at, because that's what everyone listens to.
@@joshuawiedenbeck6944 it is because unlike rock and metal country fans still listen to radio. Radio and the country music corporation. In Nash Vegas have historically been very cozy, and still are to this day. Country fans will listen to anything on country radio. Country artists also are more accessible to country fans than most rock stars and bigger bands. Rock stars still maintain an almost other worldly image and keep an almost inaccessible aura.
Seen someone was listening to Brad Paisley for inspiration
Speaking of country names, I thought Travis Scott was a country singer for years. Then I found out he was a rapper and thought, "Well good on him for keeping his country ass sounding name." Then I learned it was a stage name and I lost my fucking mind.
OH MY GOD ahahahahaha I laughed so hard after reading this comment 🤣🤣
@@yuvi01warlock 😂 hey at least you're still alive after laughing about Travis Scott and weren't suffocated
lol 😅🤣
Tbf, it's a way more memorable name than Jacques Bermon Webster II
🤯
I'm a 52 year old grandpa and a huge Stevie T fan. I remember when this video came out. As a redneck, I laughed so hard. It's so true. He's got serious chops
60 here, Steve's talent makes me cry
He’s actually quite a skilled writer. The song he put together a while back with lyrics comprised entirely of negative comments was way better than it should have been.
The Negative Comments Song is great! LOL! My kids STILL walk around singing, "I'm gonna punch this guy in the face. I hate his voice. He drives me insane."
🤣🤣🤣
His Ed Sheeran song was also brilliant
"way better than it should have been." 😂
Oh yeah that was awesome! Also metalcore song that he did like 7 years ago was amazing
Agreed. Stevie T is extremely talented. He writes and performs parodies so effortlessly, and they sound like they could be turned into actual hit radio songs.
The funny thing with Stevie T is that his joke songs actually are really good!
Moonlight eternal-burning sunlight afterlasting could be dragonforce’s new somg
Too good actually 😂
Remember Weird Al Yankovic?
One of my favorite songs is the one he wrote using mean YoutTube comments for the lyrics. It's funny, but it's also actually also a really good song!
m.ruclips.net/video/RlTe_nnewIY/видео.html
OMG I was cryin when I saw his formula for imagine dragons songs....DONT STEP ON MY CAT, hahaha
That song sounded exactly like a truck commercial. Dude absolutely nailed this.
I wanted that song to be on Spotify so bad, so I could slide it into my wife's playlist and watch her rock out to it. 😂
"under a million shooting stars (in the night sky)"
that was a genius line right there.
also that guitar solo was epic.
Stevie T knows exactly what he is doing.
Tom Petty (who’s played with some of the most classic county artists) said that modern Country is just a watered down rock band with a fiddle. This video is pretty good evidence that he’s not wrong. Stevie T gets me. 🤠😎🤣
...and today's modern country is rap's trap drums (so much drum programming happening in that genre now), country instrumentation, with pop writers offering up songs to be sung in a country voice. Identity crisis. "Let's borrow from the genres we spent decades disrespecting. I think we need to at this point." lol
@@cessxiii … if there was ever a nail, you just hit it on the head. 🔨
Had that same feeling a long time ago. Was a big country fan, then Billy Ray Cyrus and the Dixie Chick's happened. Can't stand most country music since. I am sure there are lots of talented people out there. But from what I have heard in these last 35 year's all sounds the same except with a southern accent. Gone are the days of Crystal Gale, Alabama, Marshall Tucker, Glenn Campbell, Barbara Mandrell, Charlie Parker and Dolly Parton.
To be honest, it could easily be argued that rock is just country, but you definitely have to go way back to find really good creative country.
There is real country music, but you won't find it on the record charts.
RUclips bought Stevie T that big house and property. He did a "Cribs" style walkthrough of it, thanking his subscribers for all their support because he couldn't have done it without us. The man is hilarious and honest and amazing.
Honest and then some. Like admitting that he turned down playing bass for Dragon Force because he has severe anxiety. RUclips lets him get out into the world without leaving his bedroom
The only thing is, a person is not gonna be able to rely on RUclips forever. Hope he's saving some of that dough, because he's been doing this since he was a teenager. I don't think he's ever had a real job before. I love his content though. He's hilarious.
I love Stevie. Dude can play his ass off!
@@Krullmatic He delivered pizzas for a company when he was a teen but he hasn't mentioned anything else
@@Krullmatic With his musical talent, I'd say it's a safe bet that even if RUclips falls off for him, he'll be able to at least pay his bills and then a bit off of something in the industry.
As a country music non-fan, I'd never know this was satirical if I'd randomly heard it. I might have even been blown away that they allowed shredding now.
This is great. Stevie T is a Canadian treasure. The band DragonForce asked Stevie to tour with them. I’m not a fan of DragonForce, but I do recognize that they are one of the most technical bands in the world. Steve can play y’all. The fact that this guy can shred guitar, and be hilarious makes him really entertaining.
It was a short gig offered as a bass player for the band. Stevie freaked, and made excuses as to why he couldn't do it, it's a crying shame, he's a super talented guy.
A treasure? Didnt he harrass a guitar player for not liking them?
Shame he's done so much preying upon young children
Dragon force isn't that technical at all lol. Maybe compared to radio stuff but no, just no.
@@preston2636 ridiculous
I’ve been a fan of Stevie T for a couple years now, he’s super talented, some of his metal core is pretty good too. That is his house he recently bought. I don’t know who his audience is but I’m 49 and I like most of his videos
41 here, and I’ve been a Stevie T fan for years
44 here... Same, fan of his for years now
I’ll be 48 Sunday and played in hard rock/metal bands for 30 years. Stevie T get my humor. 🤣🤣 Tom Petty (who’s played with some of the most classic county artists) said that modern Country is just a watered down rock band with a fiddle. This video is pretty good evidence that he’s not wrong.
43, from Serbia, and i love Stevie T!!!
i'm 42. I guess gen x just loves stupid silly humor with talent to back it up.
As an actual country fan, it's sad to see what its become. Because Country from the 60's, 70's, 80's, and even some 90's was great music.
100 percent. There is only a few guys that still have a shred of honor in country music. None of them get played on the radio.
Music is a business funded by people who don't like you, your way of life, or your beliefs. They are ridiculing you by making a mockery of everything you value. That is the sad reality. Keep listening!
My favorite part about his song at the end is that he breaks EVERY rule he established, and it STILL sounded like every country out currently.
We are not allowed to forget that Stevies musical knowledge and talent is on a different level 👌.
I got to admit. Stapling a Buffalo's Balls would be a cool metal band name.
This guy is a serious player but has anxiety issues. He got hired to be the Bassist for Dragon Force and had to drop out due to this issue. But he is a great player! Great video and analysis! Thanks brother!
He did end up playing with them a year or two later. He said he regretted it so much that he didn’t go. He played the triangle at a concert then played guitar on a few songs.
Keith Urban and Brad Paisley will shred on their album too, which is cool. They are both phenomenal guitarists.
As someone who generally doesn't like country, i will go to war for Brad Paisley if people say he can't play. the man is a MACHINE
@@StarWarriorMusic Absolutely! That man is a blues guitarist God. I will die on that hill and I'm not a huge country fan either. 🙌
Oh yeah isn't Keith Urban the dude in "The Ranch"? Clutterbilly is like the only country song I'll listen to these days just cause the guitar is freakin killer!
@@Elviolli Yes. They were a three piece band. Keith and drummer from Australia. My cousin was the bassist/backup vocalist. He’s actually still with Keith today.
I think they stand apart from the rest. Those two are extremely talented and I think have a lot to do with the writing of the songs too.
Steve Travis is a RUclips treasure. Been watching him for years. He can play anything.
The "Hello I'm Stevie T. Some of you may know me..." right at beginning killed me. I'm not the biggest Stevie T fan, but the man's spot on. My ex LOVED country, and I had to hear it atll the time. That country song he wrote sounds like everything I ever heard. He hit EVERY key aspect of a country song, and not just lyrically. The style of the lead, the vocal harmony in that one line of the chorus, the rhythmical flow in the vocals. And lyrically, he did that thing where country HAS to reference itself, nonstop. I mean the list goes on.
As far as your point about country artists shredding, that same ex dragged me to a country fest to see Brad Paisley (and others), and boy can Brad friggin play the guitar. I was very impressed, he put some of my favorite metal guitarists to shame with that performance. And I don't even like country!
Tank this was a great video to make! This is definitely an eye opener for part of the music world. I enjoyed every bit of this and thanks for talking about it! Definitely a great subject to bring up!
I lived in Nashville and became friends with lots of session musicians, and as a metal head you are 100% spot on their are shredders. The system reminds of the motown system, and other pop music machines in the past. As much as I want to critique the country music industry, its one of the few music industries left where a person can make enough to feed their family and keep a job for decades. Sad, but I understand why so many people move to Nashville and work in country because it pays the bills compared to a lot of other genres.
Steve's snarky as hell, but generally seems (to my knowledge) dead on balls accurate.
And he would love that you used "Balls" in your description... Just watch his channel... Balls come up frequently.
@@ACoustaDC yep!
Isn't that a My Cousin Vinny reference?
@@jareddoran6605 that's where I learned it!
@@jon87583 "it's an industry term"
Power ballads are the country of metal.
😂 It's true! Most of those songs could actually be turned into country or pop songs, lol!
Nothing else matters, kinda..
It's Glam Metal's fault lol they just over flooded it in the 80s and still haven't recovered lol
This reaction was just plain fun. Thanks Tank. Thanks Steve.🤘👍✌
This is my first time seeing one of your videos and the reason why I watched is because I saw this Stevie T video about country music. I was also impressed with the song. Tank, it was great to hear what you had to say and now I am a subscriber to your channel. Looking forward to checking out your videos. I'm a rock country and old funk and r&b guy. I just love music if it sounds good and it's played by talented people. I play guitar and I appreciate a great talent. I'm glad I found you. Take care
Thanks a ton, Roy! Much appreciated!
I love how you make a funny satire video super educational! So we get entertainment and learn something at the same time.
That was awesome Tank !!!!
I have to show this to my Dad ( Back in the day , he had a Country band called "Rodeo" ). I am a metal head , but I remember this sound so well....
🤘😎🤘.
Turned out a lot better than I was expecting. Really cool of you to be able to keep things professional. And I like the points that both of you made even though I haven’t watched the original video.
Not his Parent's house. He bought it himself. LOL. Thanks for sharing his video. Oh and he does not listen to country at all. He just did research. 🤣
This accurately describes modern-day mainstream country, but not sub-genres like Red Dirt and other independent/non-mainstream artists like Cody Jinks, Colter Wall, Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, Ward Davis, etc...
Stevies a straight up guy man, really cool and super talented. Hes also a really big family guy it seems. The home he bought he actually bought it to share with his grandparents I believe to give them a nicer home. He gave them the master bedroom too. I also know he lost his grandpa recently too so may he rest in peace🙏
One recent video where he played the accordion was more real and soulful than I expected. I mean he does seem like a genuinely cool dude.
don’t forget his Stevie’s sister. She’s so nice in all his videos when she cameos
@@lukeGGlee yeah, she's hot, and she is also his girlfriend 😆
Steve has done lots of genres. Honestly I think his best video was his cover of Careless Wisper when Georges Michael died.
But check out his how to be the Ramones, Power Metal and Black Metal those three are on 5he mark as well.
Thanks for highlighting ST been a fan forever …glad I found ya ..suscribed
I’m so happy you did this!! The almost all of his songs are meant to be funny. However, they still are great!
Steve t does such amazing parodies of song genres or bands that it's amazing he doesn't get more credit.
Holy sh*t!! I used to listen to Molotov Solution religiously in circa 2008-10 and always wondered what happened to them. The fact you brought one of their guitarists up and he’s in Nashville blows my freaking mind ha
And thanx Tank for all you do brother just love your reactions keep on Rolling!❤
I love both of yous content!
I'm 16, and I grew up listening to country music, and I can tell Stevie made an excellent job, he nailed it (though today I can't even listen to country anymore, I've had enough lol). Like you said, it truly does sound like most popular country songs, lol! Also, just discovered your channel today, with this video. Subbed✨
You're 16, you still have a lot of time to keep exploring country music. Get off country radio. There's great artists in the underground.
You should give Country Music another chance. Listen to some new stuff. Like Hank Williams Sr., George Jones or Buck Owens. 😉
Thanks for reviewing Stevie's video! I always like Stevie T's channel. Two days without him and I'm going thru withdrawals. Entertaining look at Countrain Musicrain. The house was Stevie's, by the way.
10:33 YES. Country is an entire genre of hired guns. An actual country band is rare. It’s always the person who writes the songs, and the hired guns they take on the road. Then a whole other set of hired guns in the studio.
Maybe that's a part of why so many country songs sound so similar as of late... Gotta keep 'em simple enough for the hired guns to learn in two days!
LOL...ok, if you're reacting to Stevie T.... you have to do "How to be Power Metal" dude literally writes a Dragonforce song in under 10 minutes🤣🤣🤣
I’ve been watching Stevie T for a long while and his satire is really funny, I could see him being a country artist comedian.
Love your videos TANK!!! Big fan from Sydney Australia 🇦🇺🤘🏻🤘🏻
Cool video and interesting perspectives. Will be checking out more of your vids.
Steve´s musicality is absolutely fantastic, I´m always impressed!
I watch every Stevie t video and am a country fan and am so happy with how accurate it is and the same criticism about shredding live! I've seen bands for country stars that looked like they belonged in a metal band
Your video popped up in my feed. I saw Stevie T's video when he did it. I liked your critique of his video and your insight into country music.
Thanks, man!
Just watched this today on Steves channel, and I gotta say this is even more fun watching you, who have been touring with country bands, react to it :D
Great video, thank you, sir! He came close on the name-drop requirement with "favorite sing-along" line, but probably too inside baseball for outright hit. There's a ton of Taylor Swift mentions - does that count? :) For a complete jester, Stevie is a damn good musician (or the other way around) and these parodies can be so spot on, they could be on the radio, especially the Ed Sheeran one he did... You should do a by-the-numbers country song, on a dare.... and then a country metal one, with some death growls :)
Colter Wall is a canadian country singer thats actually country I can listen too. As for Steve T I came to the same thoughts when he released that video......Damn some minor tweaks and that could actually go top 10 as a country single.
Check out Corb Lund. I'm from Texas but Corb goes fuckin' hard man.
Great vid! Don't know why I hadn't seen this react video or your channel before today but new sub for sure! Greetings from the house bassest of the Gore Country Music Club, a metal head living in the Country Music capital of NZ.
Lol Steve is always nailing it. Very informative Tank.
Petition to get Stevie T on the Black lounge podcast!
Stevie is a superb guitarist. He was asked to join Dragonforce. He didn't because of personal issues but he can shred really well.
Your video was an interesting insight into the behind the scenes of country music. It's easy to forget that musicians might play for more than one group or do their own thing on the side
Stevie T is one of my favorite music guys. Funny and talented as the day is long. I am a new sub to your channel because my friend loves Stevie also and sent me this link. Iove country music too and thought his spoof was great!
Stevie T - Shadowed By Darkness is an insane instrumental and was his very early MV.
Just saw that video a few days ago and was utterly blown away. Its a great showcase of his more serious muso side.
😂I’m glad I watched this through Tank! Definitely made it better getting the 👍 by someone who can confirm the country legitimacy!🤣
Came for Stevie, stayed for your awesome input… subbed for sure 😄
Thanks!
Thanks for this video I really enjoyed it 🙂
It's so true that country music songwriting is such a formula that doesn't get changed much these days but, I personally am such a sucker for it and I love Hardy. (mostly because he mixes metal and rock with his music). He cranks out hits of his own band and writes hits for huge country artists, very impressive.
Hardy is awesome. 🤘
Stevie is definitely a goofball, but he's actually really talented. I had fun watching you react and was surprised you agreed with so much of it, lol. Country music man...
Props on roadie work bro... People just don't know how hard you, "they" work to put on the show that we normal folks love so much. Thank you!
I think i remember you from Suwannee River Jam. I was FOH on the amphitheater stage. Congrats on the RUclips!
Stevie T and Tank in the same video. Badass
I was drunk the day my momma got out of prison and I went to pick her up with my pickup truck in the rain but before I could get to the station she got ran over by a damn old train (the perfect country song) David Allen Coe.
Guess I'll just have to have You Never Even Called Me By My Name stuck in my head for the rest of the day
Written by Steve Goodman and John Prine. You don’t get much better than those two. Especially John Prine who didn’t take a writing credit for the song. But yeah, David Alan Coe, a very country anti type.
Great video reaction! I like your content! You earned a sibscription with this one! Looking forward to hearing what else you have to say about country music!
Absolutely!!! Live is a different beast. I’m 2014, I went to Austin to see Jason Aldean open fro George Strait. In Jason’s set was My Kinda Party, that song, even on the album, has a kinda guitar solo trade off and they played that even better and longer live. Im a guitarist myself so even though I do t know any band members’ names, I go to see them just as much as the titular name. George Strait was phenomenal and his Ace in the Hole band is the reason why he’s able to be so amazing. I wish I could relive that night over and over again.
Really interesting; I don't know much about the country industry but it sounds like a microcosm of the music industry at large, insofar as the same writers are making pretty much the same basic songs for the prettiest people they can find.
I think my intro to Stevie T was his How to Be Black Metal video 😂. He always nails it.
First time watching you... and I am a steve t fan.... You did a great job on this... onto now check out more of your channel!
Great video. As someone from Alabama, I appreciate that “y’all” at the end.
I will agree with that. I'm not a fan of most country artists now, but their bands are usually some real badass musicians
This just shows everything I don't like about Country music and the scene, makes me so glad I am in the UK, we value artists for what they can do, this means writing, playing, recording and performing live. The metal scene is so diverse and while I do not like all of it there are bands in most sub-genres that I like which shows how different they sound, its not all the same or noise, Long live Rock and Roll, and Metal
Awesome video love it.
Im glad you published this. good laugh.
One has to got to alternative country to hear real country music than the country pop stuff that is popular. It is artist like Colter Wall, Sireera Ferrell, Logan Ledger and Charlie Crockett who are preserving the traditions of country music and presenting it to a new audience.
Stevie T is an immensely talented artist.
Been a Steve T subscriber for a couple/few years now. Didn't know he was Canadian, but I guess it makes sense (I am too and I can see his "Canadianisms" (reminds me of Jim Carey)).
Anyway, glad to see you enjoy his content. Heavy/Death Metal is where it's at. Steve should invent some Djentry (Djent/Country). Banjdent (Banjo Djent).
As a fan of Stevie you earned my subscribe. I was also shocked how good his song was lmao
As a metal head growing up in small town, Alberta, Canada. I can confirm. Country music and that lifestyle are deep rooted here.
Thankfully Calgary always had a strong metal scene.
Mainstream country all sounds the same. But I'm starting to see the same problem with modern metal. Same guitar tones, same growls, same djent chugging. Nobody these days has their own unique sound like in the past.
The thing with Stevie is he makes his jokes and crack us up, but he is hugely talented. Also funny enough, though I don't listen to much country, the artists that I really like are almost all Canadian.
Really enjoyed the video.
This was priceless! Thanks! So much fun to watch. Great job. Both of you.

just checked kyle fishman, and he recently wrote an album with the title "coldest beer in town" haha.
This was great.....I'd love to see you do all his how to genre vids.....especially my favorite Black Metal (snipps hehe)
Absolutely thought you were gonna RIP on this one!
Pleasantly-surprised & happy you didn't.
I mean, I honestly expected coming into this that I was gonna disagree with half the stuff he said, but he absolutely nailed it.
Stevie is extremely talented and he’s like the Jim Carey of music RUclips
Yes
Jason Hook is a prime example. He was a guitarist for Hilary Duff before 5FDP.
I didn't know that
I really enjoyed your reaction video. Not a country fan either but grew up in rural NY and was exposed to a whole lot of it in my youth. I'm a Stevie T fan though and I feel the same as you,. He nailed it. He is a very well-rounded musician and has an ear and eye for this kind of thing. Even his early videos where he made several "how to be " videos, he nails it and produces a great song. That is his house, by the way. He moved out of his parent's house a year or so ago. :)
This is a great video.👍🤘🏼
Modern Country is a lot different than it used to be. Ole Hank would have never done it this way. I used to listen to it as well as metal but there are maybe 5 bands out there that can still do good country.
Oh man, I was hoping this came cross your radar :)
Thoroughly enjoyed your review of Steve, I thought it would be a Savaged Critique. I just Appreciate your honesty, from that I became subscriber and looking forward to more of your videos. The one thing I noticed Steve missed, but I always heard, would be the vocal rasp at the beginning and end of a verse especially with male singers.
Best new country song I've heard in years. I hope to add to my spotify playlist.
