- The players distance iron category has grown and grown in the last decade. At the top of a lot of people's wishlist is the TaylorMade P790. A hollow body players iron with impressive distance and forgiveness.
Roll on 2023, when the new Callaway Paradym family arrived. The irons weren't the main talk of the town, but they had some very impressive technology behind them.
Equipment Editor Alex Lodge took the Callaway Paradym irons and the TaylorMade P790 irons to Gray's Golf to see how they compared.

I have had my paradyms for about a fortnight now and absolutely love them. Huge increase in distance and I haven’t had any problems with them not being able to hold the greens. The sound and feel are amazing!
Fortnite💀
How are you feeling about them almost a year on?
I have tried several brands and models over the last few weeks - Titleist 100, 200 and 300, TM Stealth, Mizuno JPXs, Srixon ZX 5 and 7, Callaway Apex, Ping G430. Sales rep put the Paradym in my hands today [with graphite shaft] and I was FLOORED by the solid feel and distance. I hit these irons for 50-60 shots with a 7 iron. I LOVED them. The price stinks - they are very pricey but ... I think I am going to get fitted for these irons. As mentioned, I've hit lots of clubs over several days in the last few weeks. These are by far my favourite. For what it is worth I am about a 7 handicap.
I had TM Sims, moved into PXG 0311 P Gen 5s and I couldn't keep them straight, and i was 15 yards shorter. Bought the Paradymes and i love them. Got the distance back that I had with the Sims, and the control that i was lacking with the PXGs. Really happy with them so far
I think the paradigms look so cheep compared to the 790s.
Wrong
@@robertpelache8901 yeah because the blue plastic look is truely classier lol
I loved my P790’s but my new T100S’s are a whole new level. Best irons I’ve ever hit. But everyone is different and that’s what fittings are for.
you realise the difference b/w p790s and t100's?
Not in the same class of club
The paradyms look good. Especially the drivers
about time to hit the P790 from the Throne!!
Excellent series of shots from you today. Both are great irons. Paradym's looks are growing on me, and I think I would choose them, especially as I have found the P790's a little too "clicky".
Thank you! I'm in the same boat - I didn't like the Paradym at all to begin with, but they've grown on me a lot the more i test them. A dark horse!
Paradym sound more powerful, and they feel good. But at the end i still choose P790 lol
Wish I could hit a 7 iron like that.
The paradym’s in the states are 200$ more then the P790’s which I play. I love my P790’s
At launch date the Paradym is not on my shopping list at all but after few testing on many different manufacturers- Titleist T200 , Cobra Forged Tec , Mizuno 225Pro and Taylormade P790 but I choose Paradym Irons because more forgiving , great feels like forged irons and sound good too .
Great to hear!
Thanks for the video. During this test, what shaft are you swinging? Same shaft in each club?
That is correct - I believe it was a 95S shaft, but can't remember exactly
I play P790s and I hate the way higher compression golf balls feel with it. My swing speed really calls for a firmer ball but I tend to play lower compression golf balls due to the feel off the face. I guess this is due to the speed foam and thin face design.
What type of lower compression balls have you been playing. I play 790s as well and I can’t say I 100% feel the same as you but it’s worth trying out to see if it improves some feel.
@@TurdFergusson318 The firmest I play is the Maxfli Tour (gonna try the new maxfli tour soft soon) but I prefer the feel of a TM Tour Response or even some of the Ionomer balls like a Srixon Soft Feel. TXG did a video about the srixon soft feel and they even mentioned P790 owners would probably like the feel of that ball.
Hey champ ,I got fitted for paradym recently.
I haven’t played in 20 years and am in interested in your opinion on the game improvement irons being a crutch ?
It’s a lot of coin and I don’t want something that holds my hand and not makes me improve my actual swing and game ?
The fitting actually made everything more confusing purchase wise.
🙏
The Paradym are really REALLY good irons.
If you're concerned about the financial side, getting a set of GI irons that are a few iterations old second hand will still serve you very well. You could even find some in your specs if you've already had a fitting.
Clubs aren't everything, but these are the top of the bunch if you want something brand spanking new.
you said the paradyms perform better than the P790s but from the data you had on the screen I would have said you were more consistent with the P790 with regards to distance control and dispersion?
distance variation due to loft variation. Paradym more forgiving but I don;t think they feel good. They feel like a chunk of metal on the end of a stick
Came for the clubs, but I stayed for the stripes!
Been playing Paradyms for about a month now. Switched from 2019 P790s and I am going back! Offset and chrome look at address is hard to get used to. May be the right club for others but if you prefer a more slim look and dull finish the Paradyms are hard to get used to.
I mean they aren't really even close to the same category of iron. P790s, while super forgiving, still are designed for the better-ish player. All the models of the Paradym irons are game improvement irons. This comparison did a very good job of showing that.
Actually the Paradigm is classified as a players distance iron. The Paradigm X is classified as a game improvement iron.
But they are
I know it’s the purpose of these irons to add distance, but seeing a 7 iron spinning in the 4,000s is wild to me.
Agreed - way too low
nice review.
Thank you!
Im new to this sport. I got fitted for the paradym. I am fairly new to this. Did i make a mistake getting these for a beginner?
Im confused now hahaha
Any help would be appreciated 🙏
You did not! They're a great set of irons and by getting something that isn't super game improvement, it means you can use them for a long time!
Cheers. Got my paradym, and they are amazing.
How much more forgiving is the Paradym in your opinion?
Say Taylormade is like 8/10 in forgiveness, whereas Paradym is closer to 9/10
How would there’s compare to a Mavrik Pro?
Pretty similar, albeit the Paradym do look and feel a touch better.
2.5 degrees difference in lofts of 7 iron...makes up the distance difference...
I figured the stealth irons were the same class as paradigm. And tthe apex irons were to be compared to the p790 or p770.
I talked to Callaway and they said the Paradym would be closest to P790. Not a lot in it though.
@@GolfmagicPlus Thanks for the information.
Come on LADDD - Liked the vid for you
I'm not sure P790 is a comparable club to Paradym. I would think P790 would be more comparable to Apex. Just an opinion.
Apex irons are completely forged. P790 only have a small portion of the face that’s forged. Paradym has an entire forged face
I've spoken to Callaway and they have said their Paradym is currently their competitor to P790.
These lofts are unreal. I still play mp14s and smile when someone tells me they hit 1 less.
Were though Paradym X or the Regular Paradym?
Regular paradym
They are not even the same type of irons. Paradym is considered a game improvement. Apex would be a better comparison. I play 790s so maybe I’m partial.
The Paradigm is not a game improvement iron. The Paradigm X is the game improvement iron.
yeah your partial. they are very comparable, but the 790 is better looking, especially from the back side. But if the Paradym plays better I can get over the looks in a hurry.
Paradym's are bombers, I had similar results comparing the two but $200 a club $US is a hard sell for a 1 year release. These will be worth ~60% of that in a years time.
Absolutely - I completely agree. With the club not being isolated as it’s own release it feels like it’s somewhat wasted as a top quality iron. You’ll see some proper savings on it soon
The difference is less than $15 a club between 790s and paradym. 7 club paradym set is only $100 more. People pay for distance.
Worth 60% less or cost 60% less ?? 2 different scenarios
And P790s have proven to hold their value quite well
Mp225 are better feel and acoustics, very close in distance, Paradym and x are crazy long
Agreed - MP 225 are very difficult to beat.
I went from playing a set of Apex iron’s which I loved to the new P790’s now for a year. There just as good. Callaway missed the mark on pure aesthetics with the new Paradym’s.
Beauty is in the eye oof the beholder.
your right but for me if it plays better, that rather ugly backside will start to look real good. The best looking irons are blades SOOO are you going to game a set of blades, doubt it.
Basically using a 5 or 6 iron. Closer to my 5 iron mp32. Ego clubs. Put them in the bin.
Maybe a few but several? Have I missed something?
What do you mean?
@@GolfmagicPlus go back and listen to your introduction
Is he jon rahm son?
His daddy
Why would you want to hit a 7 iron 200 yards? What about the rest of the clubs? Strong lofted irons are designed so someone can turn to their playing partner and say I only hit a 7 what did you hit. They should get rid of the number and just put the loft on irons similar to wedges that would stop high handicap morons thinking they are long, that 7 iron is not the same as a true loft blade 7 but makes bad golfer feel big about themselves
I don’t necessarily want to hit a 7 iron 200 yards, these aren’t my gamers.
Hi Artic Lights, golfers purchasing the Paradym iron can't hit the 7 iron 200 yards. If they could they would be looking elsewhere.
Why would you want to hit a 5 iron when you could swing a 8 iron let's say, better control.
How tf do you hit a 7 iron 200yrds?? Lol
Strong lofts and a fast below average swing
@@GolfmagicPlus I gotta try that lol. No idea what it means, but sounds good. Thanks for reply!
he's young strong, has a good swing and was swinging players distance irons, not all 7s are the same my titleist CB 7 is 34 degrees (much weaker than these two clubs, I hit it 175, I'd probably hit these two irons about 190-195
Love look of Paradym. P790’s look plain and blah. Aside from price point in Callaway this year it’s beautiful gear, but empties the wallet very fast.
Interesting to hear a different opinion about the looks, as I thought the P790 were much better. Emptying the wallet seems far too common in golf these days!
What did we learn? It’s the golfer at the end of the day not the clubs
Well if you were wrong before how can we presume your right this time? Copying Rick shiels on this like all the others.
Thanks for your comment
Your spin rate is really low.
Yeah you’ll see that with players distance irons like these. Hollow body heads and lofts play a big part, but their descent angle is pretty ideal so it’s not a dealbreaker. Just a proper fitting needed
Callaway makes good clubs, but the new irons are just ugly asf. They need to get a new branding person.
Such a weird comparison. P790 is renowned as a true players club. The Paradym looks like an “improvement” club .. ugly, brand focused.
Incorrect
if that's incorrect then what is callaways most game improving iron this year? you should put the paradym up against the new stealths, plain and simple. same lofts, same target-customer, same iron-that-fits-this-years-driver-theme category.
@@maxibonkiswaparadym X
P790 is not renowned as a true players club, look at the 770 or Apex Pro or the Titleist CB like I play I only hit the 7 175 yrds but that is far enough for me.
The p790 is a player’s DISTANCE iron. Not a true player’s club at all. It’s aimed at decent to good ball striker who needs a bit of help with launch and speed and offers a reasonable dose of forgiveness. And you have be able to tolerate the feel and sound, which is pretty bad and indefensible at the price point.
Best looking iron vs the ugliest iron ever made
you obviously have never seen older Ping Irons or the latest Ping drivers. Now they are some ugly ass clubs
This dude is dreaming if he thinks he hits a 7 iron 200 yards. Scottie SCHEFFLER only hits his 5 iron 210 yards
I hit a Paradym 7 iron 210 yards yes.
Scottie Scheffler uses TM P7TW irons. Those irons are 4 to 5 degrees weaker than the irons in this video.
I have roughly the same swing speed as Scottie. The similarities end there though.
Scottie is playing blades and this tester said he doesn't hit his gamer 200 yards, give him a break he did a really good job. .
