In my opinion, it is telling that Apple has stopped work on an autonomous vehicle. Achieving the reliability and safety of, at least, the average human driver is apparently much harder than one would think. The solution may indeed require AI more like the fictional HAL of 2001 A Space Odyssey; a self aware AI that values its own existence as well as the existence of its passengers. (Yes, I am disregarding the part where HAL attempts to neutralize its passengers.) It would, therefore, be prudent for Apple to focus on AI first.
