  • This sale is quite the banger! I forgot to mention Octopath Traveller 2, which is 40% off, but also still quite pricey, even if it's a great game.

    I hear a lot of people cry about tactics ogre reborn for the level cap thing but I really like it, I don't have to grind to get past something so it makes it much more balanced and fair I find.
    Others say things like they should be able to get as high level as they want but I feel if they take away the level cap then they will make it harder to level so it will be more of a grind just to get anywhere.

    • @CoffeePotato

      I agree, it's a huge improvement.

    • @lloyd011721

      thats flawed. they want the level cap gone and no change to exp gain. personally i think its dumb when devs try to prevent over levelling forcefully like that.

    • @EricN73158
      @EricN73158 9 дней назад +1

      @@lloyd011721 it makes it so you dont need to grind, once you hit level cap you can do all the content you are suited for as your progress the story. The game is easy enough to get it done to play most of it. If you want to get to the grind part of the game just reach end game and you will be able to hit the highest you can be and then you just grind gear.

    • @lloyd011721
      @lloyd011721 9 дней назад

      @@EricN73158 its not really about NEEDing to grind, its about being told how to play. i feel like players should be able to over level content if they want to put in that time.

    • @astralbuddha
      @astralbuddha 9 дней назад

      @@lloyd011721 The older versions didn't have level caps and that was boring for me in a multitude of ways. Trivializing main content defeats the purpose of a strategy game. It also would make random encounters way harder earlier in the game than they were supposed to be because the enemies would wear gear that matched your level regardless of what chapter you are in.
      So, if you over-leveled in order to smooth-brain battles with big-D demi-god energy, your gear would be drastically underwhelming compared to the trash mobs due to random encounters scaling to your level.
      And honestly, I'd have been fine with having a leveling system removed entirely. Replace it with a different stat incrementation system like making stat cards/charms more accessible. To really focus on the strategy aspect. Chess doesn't have a leveling system. Tactics Ogre is basically 4D/5D chess.
      I can empathize with your disdain for forced limitations in general though.

    As I expected, you and I have a lot of the same games/tastes in games. So I had to go through my "Taciturn Tactics on Turns" label on my Steam library to find a few recs you didn't mention, maybe haven't played. But I got a few you or anyone else who comes to this channel might be interested in:
    1) The Banner Saga: It's a Turn-Based tactics game with limited/weird RPG elements, as it's a bit more like FTL in the non-battle segments but more directed and less free-form. Absolutely beautiful though, with great animations and art style. It was effectively released in 3 episodes though, so for the *full* game, you need to get all three.
    2) Invisible Inc: Surprised you've never mentioned this one, but it's a Turn-Based Tactics *STEALTH* Game made by Klei, who've done a lot of great games including Don't Starve. It's not really an RPG per se, because you do relatively short runs that are randomized like most rogue lites instead, but the whole focus not being on direct combat but stealth instead is a great mix-up for most TTRPG fans.
    3) Massive Chalice: The only other "X-Com-Like" I've ever seen that doesn't just do standard modern military vs aliens but goes with a fantasy theme instead. TBTactics combat system with a lot of forced enemy movement by the player via pushes and similar moves, but the gimmick is that you're playing multiple generations of a royal lineage defending a titular Massive Chalice as it absorbs energy for decades, so you have to marry your units to each other to have kids that'll take on their traits and can become stronger. Strange art style though - very uh, impressionist/cubist, I guess?
    4) Shadowrun Returns/Dragonfall/Hong Kong: This is the Harebrained Schemes Shadowrun trilogy for those that want the full TTRPG experience. It's 3 games in the cyberpunk meets fantasy Shadowrun universe that are individually fairly short RPGs, but collected, make for a very full series of stories. Dragonfall has the best narrative (in my opinion, though this seems to be agreed upon by most people) and Hong Kong has the fullest mechanics as each title built on the last, while Returns is the weakest in both regards but has the most mods (and there are a LOT of mods for the game if you want more content).
    5) Pit People: A Tactics game by The Behemoth, makers of Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. Basically a Tactics Game that's HILARIOUS. They go more for comedy here than anything, and it totally, totally works. I think this one was super underappreciated by pretty much everyone it was aiming to grab the attention of, unfortunately.
    6) Dungeon Rats: a Spin-Off game to Age of Decadence, the absolutely brutal and bare-bones CRPG. It's a pretty simple campaign of straight forward battles as you try to escape from a deep underground prison, but it's EXTREMELY difficult in its scenarios. There are zero mechanics you've never encountered before, it's just pretty standard TTRPG stuff through and through, but this might be the "Dark Souls of TTRPGs" for those folks looking for a very tough (but still completely fair) challenge. If you want the full context of the game though, you'll need to play the devs' first title Age of Decadence, which is very good in terms of writing and reactivity for player choices but is also very brutal and the graphics aren't very good.
    7) Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock: This is soooort of a Turn-Based Strategy game? It's weird. It's basically real-time with pause strategy. It's also a space fleet game rather than ground based game like most of the one's on this list, but it's REALLY good and no one talks about it I think because even though it was a licensed spin off for fans of the 2004 Battlestar Galactica reboot, it came out over a decade too late, so not that many people even know about it. If you liked that show and were frustrated no game ever came out for it, this was the game you wanted (unless you wanted a space flight sim like Wing Commander, which was the other game people wanted).
    8) Breach & Clear: The grungiest game on my little list here, it has pretty low production values, but it's an interesting Simultaneous Turns turn based tactics game where you field squads of modern military operators in scenarios where they breach and clear the area of hostile forces. Basically Rainbow Six 1 if you turned it into a purer tactics game rather than having any FPS elements. Very simple premise and relative simple game, but well executed ultimately, if a bit cheap.
    And finally, I'll never get over Fell Seal's art style. It's just too distracting. It's like it's made by someone with an actual visual disorder who doesn't understand pleasing proportions or colors. Everything literally nauseates me, so I can't really play that game for too long.

    Great recommendations! I would like to add to the list what I consider another indie gem, the age of fear series. Very solid tactical combat with a very d&desque vibe. If you are remotely interested Age of fear the free world is basically a demo with way to much content to be considered one and as the tittle implies it's free. Try that, and if you like what you see pick age of fear 2 since it's very cheap at 4 bucks (don't worry about it being second in the series, there's references and some characters to the story of the first game but the focus it's elsewhere for the most part).
    The first age of fear, the undead king, was remastered a while ago so ot has comparable price to other more recent entries, and also new dlc. It's great, but I figured people who are starting may want to try the smallest commitment possible in the form of the cheapest tittle. As a side note they have a very interesting concept in age of fear total, an standalone compilation with all current games AND future content on the series. Just mentioning because it seems like an intriguing bussines method and if someone truly likes the series may want to know about it.

    I would love for you to check out and review Our Adventurer Guild. If it weren't for the flash game aesthetic, this would game would be killing it. It has FFT & Ogre customization with D&D and guild management hitting on all the right spots. If it had proper aesthetic it would be up there with Tactics One Vision, war of the lions and three houses for me.

    Played a lot of crystal project myself. Played through the main game on hard and running through a few randomizers, It's a solid turn-based rpg with un-lockable classes and with parkour exploration, side optional bosses require certain setups and are hard as balls, but overall just doing the main story doesn't really require you to find all the crystals let alone fight everything. The dev does expect and encourages people to sequence break, just know there are enemies ready to kick you ass on the other side lol. Otherwise just enjoy the music, the collectables, and the exploration. Idk, there is just something relaxing about uncovering the entire map even if there is no incentive to do so, just go everywhere since every area is connected in one form or another.
    Sale-wise, Ogre tactics reborn is prolly something ill get on my next pay but i already bought a lot and don't want to over spend with my rent coming up lol. I did pick up the Agarest War games right away since they were just 5-6$ (CAD) apiece. They are ps3 era generational games that are pretty fun, who's story and characters subtly changes depending on which love interest you go for in each generation. The Battles varies between the games being more trails-like tactics in some, radiant historia grid-positional in one, and just straight up turn-based in the last one.
    As for a recommendation myself, it not on a huge sale since its newer but i had a lot of fun with Dream Tactics. Kind of a cutesy, minimalist, tactics game. In battle your units each has a deck of cards which you randomly draw 5 each turn and have mana to play them, you have a set amount of redraws and the point in battle is to combo down groups of enemies. Outside of battle you walk around with your party, destroying barrels for money and opening chests for card and gear upgrades (all of which feels significant for each character), and you start a battle by running into a group of enemies. Scaling is kind of annoying since enemies will scale up with you so at no point do you feel overpowered, but it makes finding that perfect combination of moves that much more enjoyable.

    Have you tried Total War Warhammer? Unlike most in this real time war series, this one has enough features it could pass as an SRPG in alot of ways, such as character progession, unlocking quests with secret items and characters, hunting items, ect. While gathering all its parts can be a chore (Because theres alot to get as its been building since 2015) this is one game where people are always demanding more content which usually releases about 3-4 times a year with new characters ect. Its incredible, and I usually don't like RTS games, but this one is in a league of its own. Check it out if you havent yet. You really only need to buy the 3rd installment to get the whole map, unless you want the characters from the first two to be playable as well. Basically just start with getting factions you are interested and add the rest little by little. You don't NEED them purchased to have them as enemies on the map, just to play as them.

    Triangle strategy is a great game. More about the story than the battles, and the battles are unique in that each character has totally different moves and the soundtrack in my opinion is better than ogre...

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  9 дней назад +1

      Battles are fun, soundtrack is catchy, but the story....look, the premise is cool, but the writing blows after about the first hour. They seemingly couldn't stop missing quality for word could, and spent half an hour reintroducing things instead of just moving on. Take a shot for every time wife face reintroduces her title and worries because of that title. Instant gateway to alcoholism.
      By itself, it'd be whatever, but it wanted to be TO, which was known for saying a ton through implications and short lines. Comparing the two stories is wild.

  • @taliefer16
    @taliefer16 7 дней назад +1

    I enjoyed triangle strategy way more than TO reborn. I think its a better game, personally. also TO Reborn is on sale pretty often, not so much with Triangle Strategy. so if someone is choosing between the two, id keep that in mind. can likely pick up TO Reborn at the same price pretty soon.

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  6 дней назад

      While agreed on price, can't really agree on any of the rest. Triangle is fun, and to each their own, but I don't like canned units or decisions that go nowhere. Or, well, dialogue that's 30 pages more than it needs to be. I get their development went sideways, but you can feel the Frankenstein past the demo parts pretty clearly.
