  • LYRICS:
As the café was closing on a warm summer night
And Cathy was cleaning the spoons
The radio played the hit parade
And I hummed along with the tune
She asked me to change the station
Said the song just drove her insane
But it weren't just the music playing
It was me she was trying to blame
And the sky is black and still now
On the hill when the angels sing
Ain't it funny how an old broken bottle
Looks just like a diamond ring
But it's far far from me
Well I leaned on my left leg in the parking lot dirt
And Cathy was closing the lights
A June bug flew from the warmth he once knew
And I wished for once I weren't right
Well we used to laugh together
And we'd dance to any old song
Well you know she still laughs with me
But she waits just a second too long
And the sky is black and still now
On the hill when the angels sing
Ain't it funny how an old broken bottle
Looks just like a diamond ring
But it's far far from me
Well I started the engine and gave it some gas
And Cathy was closing her purse
Well we hadn't gone far in my beat-up old car
And I was prepared for the worst
Will you still see me tomorrow
No I got too much to do
    Well a question ain't really a question
If you know the answer too
And the sky is black and still now
On the hill when the angels sing
Ain't it funny how an old broken bottle
Looks just like a diamond ring
But it's far far from me

Robert, you did it again - you hit the nail on the head. Of course, almost any John Prine song is a perfect song, but your singing and plectrum style enhances it very well. This Prine song has a couple of my favorite poignant observations: 1) you know she still laughs with me / But she waits just a second too long, and 2) a question ain't really a question If you know the answer too; which harkens in his cover of a song years later on the "Pink Cadillac" album, "Killing the Blues", which goes "Now you ask me, just to leave you / To go out on my own / And get what I need to / You want me to find what I've already had." Prine's 'downhome common sense' moments are what really drive his songs. And to finish, the more I watch your videos, I must say that you drive the songs you choose very well, indeed! Keep posting. Thanx!

Thank you, James! I appreciate the comment. Yes, John Prine wrote from the heart - sometimes with a touch of humour, but often with more than a hint of sadness and regret. Interesting that you should quote the song, "Killing the Blues." I love that song also, and I sing it too, although I've not posted my rendition on RUclips as yet.

John Prine is a great storyteller in a lot of his songs, this is one of them. I like that you added the lyrics for those who are not familiar with this tune. Very well played and singing. Great performance, Robert!

Thank you for the comment, Mike! Yes, John was a master songwriter and entertainer. Most of his songs have only three or four chords, but they are still great songs! I sing quite a few of John's songs, but I have only posted a couple on RUclips so far. Greetings from West Yorkshire, in England!
