Nice timing RF. I had a great system that I started working on in January of 2020. In 2021 I started in February with 1 objective. To make 6 shafts from scratch into arrows with lighted nocks while still maintaining the 20.5%+ FOC that I had in 2020. I just finished bare shaft nock tuning. I use a new SEVR resealable foam target rachet strapped to a stand on wheels. Make sure u shoot into the side of the SEVR target that has the grid pattern. It allows me to get a good read on my arrow. All bare shafts were shot with the nock on the string w/o it being lighted. The arrows I had in 2019 & 2020 with the stock nock had an additional wrap over them. My new 6 shafts r the same 300 spine arrow shot @ 63 lbs. The difference is that these new shafts r a different model of the same brand & I saved 30 grains from 1 end of carbon to the other. That helps cuz the lighted nocks r 20 grains heavier than the stock nocks. I have a nicely tuned bow & I ordered a new 2021 version of it with the same draw cycle that I will shoot from 62-65 lbs. 6 months of testing will follow but I'm happy to day that b4 fletching that I did the math & was able to get all 6 shafts within 1/2 grain of each other & they all spin & shoot true.

Great video Troy, and 100% agree on the cautions regarding lighted nocks, especially at longer ranges. This is a great topic to cover and I think alot of people really under-estimate how much impact on arrow flight and accuracy a lighted nock can have if you are not very meticulous with them, and even then still not be as reliable. It's a mechanical device that is more complicated than a plain nock and therefore has more that can go wrong--beyond just the extra weight in the rear, lower FOC, and rounder trajectory (all things otherwise equal). Over the years I have experienced several cases in testing these things where it seems like you just don't get quite the energy transfer from the string into your arrow 100% of the time with lighted nocks. I've been burned by this, even on arrow/nock/broadhead combinations that I have tuned and tested pretty thoroughly. As a result, for a long shot I just don't want to risk using a lighted nock, as the longer the range, the worse the impact on accuracy as you alluded to. My "golf bag" quiver usually has a couple of fully tested lighted nock arrows that I'll use in most situations, since vast majority of shots I take are inside 35 yds, with the rest of my arrows with standard nocks in case I need to stretch it out. For my upcoming moose hunt in Maine, I fully trust my lighted nock arrows for close-quarters work (especially on an animal with an 18" diameter vital zone) while calling, but if we do any spot and stalk where a longer shot may be required, it will be a stock nock all the way.

This is exactly what I needed to hear.. I wanted so bad to shoot my new lighted knocks on my new Mathews v3. I did all the research and put in all effort and time in tuning and I noticed the knocks I choose, which were nockturnals with Broadheads, were shooting low consistently and sometimes flew weird and left. I spent the money on a 6 pack of the nocks. So I started to mess with my sights to compensate.. but now after watching this I’m going to go back to trusty stock nocks. I might not see my arrow as well but I will have better blood on my fletchings when its time for business. Thanks much!

Great video. I just came back in the house from shooting my bow, I’ve got everything tuned up and good, for kicks I did my second experiment with a lighted nock (nocturnal) and unless I fall and hit my head, I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that unless I follow your formula and build some arrows for one of my back up bows that I absolutely am NOT using them on my primary bow. They fly crazy of course but from 10-30yds they hit the mark, however at 40 yds they look like a kid writing their name with a sparkler on the 4th of July and hit about 6 inches to the right…. For myself they are just more trouble than they are worth.

Great video as always. I went through this same situation last year when determining which lighted nock, if any to shoot. I shoot 250 spine Apollo’s from Sirius and had wonky broadhead flight with a certain lighted nock (nocturnal) so I opted to hunt with just a stock nock. Went back to the drawing board later in the season and did some research on Lumenok’s and discovered they are in fact a Black Eagle “R” nock, which is a “stock nock”!! After some nock tuning with the Lumenok’s and broadheads, I had much much better flight that I felt confident in taking to the woods.

I cut a small screw down to 15 grains (to account for lighted nock weight) and inserted it into my stock nocks for daily practice just to get the weight/balance perfect. I also made one that is 39 grains, (15 for lighted nock and 24 for vane weight) that I use for bare shaft nock tuning. Btw I don’t know why people turn the nock 4 times 90 degrees... Instead, shoot, flip, turn 90, then flip again. Just my 2 cents.
