- 09/09/2022 Hampton, Ia. Got to the Spine Line just in time to catch the ballast train leaving along with the large crane! Seems impressive to me how fast they got this bridge and track section repaired!! On the way home caught a UP detour train in Shellrock, Ia. Cedar Falls, Ia. 09/07/2022 Great to catch this UP detour train at the Cedar Falls Junction. This East bound mixed freight was just coming off the IANR line and on to the CN!
That was a big derailment. But they’ve really done a lot on it. New bridge, new rail line. I’m impressed.
It's amazing how fast they have that rail up and going. Just the amount of rock they have hauled in is amazing...I've worked for an owner of a short line RR and he said when there's a derailment "just get the checkbook out"! Lol
These railroad crews are always amazing how quick they work. Imagine if our highway workers work that fast.
Imagine the bill though. Railroads do it fast because it costs them money every minute a mainline is closed. Its pretty rare for an interstate (equivalent to a mainline) to be fully closed, they do maintenance one side at a time.
Also its very rare for an interstate or major highway to have a bridge failure like this. Happens relatively frequently with railroads. They probably find it cheaper to have an acceptable level of failure and greatly lower maintenance costs.
It would be nice if they could do highway work that fast at a decent price though.
Last I heard-RJ Corman gets $5,000.00/hour from the moment they answer the phone. No problem moving along at those rates.
Imagine if you used your brain.
RJ Corman are on call 24x7, so it's what they do. Just imagine the equipment they have all over the country. Quite the operation.
takes two years just for the contracts.
I appreciate the information that you pass along about the trains and railroads' history. Keep up your outstanding work. Thanks
You're welcome AFJ!
Excellent follow-up on the derailment and they made good progress. They were very fortunate it did not rain during this time otherwise that would have been a sea of mud. The wrecked cars sitting in the field looks like a small Cemetery and they will have an outside contractor come in and cut them up. While some cars didn't look that bad their age and remaining years of service are not worth the cost of fixing. On the ballast train the first group of cars look like they had fresh UP stencils but note the balance of them had SI reporting marks for the long gone Spokane International which UP. acquired in 1959. With all the abandonments and downgrading of Rail lines in Iowa they were very fortunate to have a detour out close by. Another Factor on detours is the pilot crew for the line that is taking your train. On the 1st detour the car behind the SP boxcar was one of those old CLSX age waiver cars! Thanks much for walking down to the IANR. CN. JCT for the detour train to help make the story complete. Looking forward to the next installment
Thanks Paul B! I was thinking the same thing on the weather. They had sunny dry weather long enough to get the line back up. If the old M&STL were still there the UP would have had a very close detour. The UP may start looking really close at some of these bridges. Many of them are a century old.
What a mess to clean up. Thanks for the drone view on accident and cleanup it really is the only way to get a clear perspective of how big a job this will be to get done.
You're welcome Zman!
Yes! "The Rock Island line is a mighty fine line, the Rock Island line is the road to ride".............and a brand-spankin'- new bridge!
Yes Paul S! The old RI lines are still very useful!
@@redsiowatrainvideos6645 those are the first two lines of a song written for/about the Rock Island railroad.
I always hear about the derailments because everyone wants to complain about them. This is the first time I've ever seen such an in depth view of a derailment sight and repairs being done. I find it quite interesting. Thanks for taking the time to show this part of the industry that many don't get to see. You're the best😊😊!
Thanks Gary! That was a big video for me to catch. I'm guessing you saw the derailment video too👍
Hi, Red, 9 months later. I looked up news stories on the derailment, It was liquid asphalt that spilled into the creek. Never saw a report on what caused the derail.
Your drone videos are what caused us to subscribe to your channel. Always interesting.
Hi Betty! Glad you like my birds eye view. That was a very remote spot, drone was a must👍
That’s amazing flying you are the best drone flying man I ever seen great thorough coverage
Thanks James Bullard!
Great to see a progress video on the derailment. The bridge looks great. Thanks again Red
You're welcome Dennis!
Your videos on this derailment are fascinating. Thank you!
Glad you like them!
used to live there till I was 17 left home and left Iowa to find a job 41 years been thinking of coming to cedar falls to visit. just to see and shellrock
That is impresive and thank you for the follow up.
They just finished a train bridge south of LaCrosse Wisconsin made from those same pre-fab concrete sections, and they have been working on it for many months. I guess they can work a lot quicker when it's a single track like that 😉
Saw your other video on this derailment, and looked it up. Apparently, back in 2015, UP put out that they were doing a several hundred million dollar revamp and modernization of the Spine Line. While the bridge in this video looks like what one would expect to see when you think 7 year old bridge; that one in the original video looked like what was probably there since the days the first rail was laid on this line.
Wouldn't surprise me if the start of the derailment was bridge failure.
This is incredible video. The progress is nothing short of amazing.
Thanks Brian W!
Amazingly quick repair work. Kudos to the whole team. Your drone work is perfection! I worked in Cedar Falls for 10 years. Love our Twin Cities. Thank you for your great work! All the best to you.
Thanks Rod Chris!!
twin cities?? i wouldn't be proud if I was a c.f resident to call waterloo my other half...that is a shit hole of a place...
I was looking forward to your followup. Great job. Thank you. 👍
You're welcome olddog!
Now this is a great video. No overcommenting, or overspeculation about what happened. Just a great video of whats going on at present. Great job. Hats off to the engineering department.
Thanks SH moop!
Wow amazing amount of high quality work being done on that derailment. I am impressed.
Cedar Falls Jct. 16:21 - 16:49 " . . . I figured they might be using this old Rock Island line . . . so that's a pretty good 'catch' right here! . . . Yeah, that's a rare 'catch,' a Union Pacific detour train right here."
GREAT 'catch,' Red. Congrats and Thank You.
An aside: Imagine if this track had been pulled for a rails-to-trails project, where would THAT leave UP? "Up the creek?' Or, UP and other lines at all sorts of diverse, heavily traveled locations where infrastructure and rights-of-way become lost / destroyed / sold?
Finally, concluding observation, a note to Rod: "No need to sweat missing your drone, as you advised your RUclips audience, as what you've captured here from ground level is fine and breathtaking as is."
Continued "Thanks" and "Good Luck" sentiments to the UP repair crews as well as detour crews. It's amazing how far this seemingly insurmountable task has progressed in a handful of days!
Yes SC Vandy, when I heard the scanner say UP at the Cedar Falls Junction I high balled it over there. Those Rock Island lines that are still in use are very vital lines. Not sure if those detour trains had UP or IANR crews in them. Glad you liked the video!!
Great video!!!
Just AMAZING that they have worked so fast and well. What a nightmare, but those people are obviously pros at what they do. Best wishes to them and they earn every penny from their expertise and hard work. AMAZING!
They've earned there pay all right, unlike Biden s divisive , destructive pres speech, or lack thereof, it amazes me that former politician s make over 100,000 dollars giving a useless speech for an hour and these hard workers have to pay the price
Thanks for the update. It is wild how much and how fast they can clean up stuff after a derail.
Nice aerial video of a bad derailment. Thanks for sharing! I used to ultra-sonically test the rail on the "spine-line" between K.C. and St. Paul back in the 1980s when it was owned by the C&NW.
Very impressed how quickly the repairs are going. Thanks again for the video
The detour train you caught at Cedar Falls would have to be headed towards KC. From St. Paul, UP Chicago traffic would go via Adams, WI (ex-CNW)
Thank you for doing this follow-up Video. Much appreciated!!!
You're welcome Rod!
Red, don't count that C&NW box car out yet. It may be laying on it's side, but a lot of those cars are still repairable. Thanks for the videos. Jon, on the U.P., Pacific Coast Line, Santa Barbara Sub., M.P. 404.5.
Nice video work especially with your drone! Unbelievable how fast they can get some of these derailments cleared and operating again. If I was the land owner I'd have them leave a couple of the boxcar's for storage of all my new wood stockpiles!! Unfortunately most freight must be destroyed to get settlements on the insurance.
Red you sound like me every time I see an old C&NW car go by as part of a consist especially being in the CSX & NS area of the country now, but I grew up not far from Proviso and my dad took the C&NW commuter to and from work downtown!
Thanks cereus57! I like your idea on the lumber and storage. Looks like enough to build a good sized building! I try catching as many CNW memories as possible. Proviso was huge in the CNW days!
Looks great they are doing and excellent job thumbs up all
Thanks Red, I too am rather fond of C&NW it use to run pass our farm near West Point NE in the 70's until floods took out the tracks.
Thanks again
You're welcome Nebraska!
Incredible speed at the repair work….well done to the engineers 👏🏻👏🏻
Great drone shots Red. It's the only way to film a derailment.
Thanks Planet Mojo!
Fascinating to watch the clean up. Great video.
Thanks for the update Red! That is pretty amazing how fast they can clean something like that up!
Sure thing A134!
Those wheels from the derailment will probably end up at the Alcoa Steel Mill outside of the little town of Jewitt Texas. That mill primarily recycles rail stock and wheels.
Thanks for the update. It's amazing how fast the RR springs into action. Your drone footage is really great. Stay safe.
Thanks Wendy!
Thanks for the update, Red!
You're welcome Nancy E!
Amazing what good old American ingenuity and teamwork can accomplish. That's textbook mitigation in record time even in kind of the middle of nowhere.
Thank you Red! That was some real good video footage with that drone and your video from Cedar Falls.
You're welcome Scott R!
Wow on the ball clean up . You did a great job on the drone shots Red well done 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 be safe Robin out . 🇺🇸🇨🇦👍🏻
Any MOW team are wonder workers. Their skills, training and equipment they can repair anything. My hat off to them!
man they work quick
Great video! Thank you for the update. Their progress is amazing!
AWESOME COVERAGE .😊😊👍👍👍
A few notes. The covered ballast cars are 'wreckers', kept in reserve for all weather repairs. Next, in situations like that, once all lading has been removed, the cars are scrapped (note later in the video that the contractors were bringing in scrap containers) Two whistle signals mean going ahead. Last, most of the former CNW 4650 cuft cars were returned to the leasing companies.
Nice update, thanks again@!
A massive multi million dollar clean up.So much damage but these guys know their stuff.
Thanks for update.
Thanks for the update. Excellent content you have here 👍
Thanks Alco Power!
Great coverage of the carnage and cleanup. Amazing job by the RR crews.
Thank you very much!
So refreshing when content creators actually know what they are covering. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the update drone shots of the derailment , boy they do work fast , also like the Shell rock and CF videos.
Sure thing David! I was glad to catch a couple detour trains.
That was a huge mess, but just amazed at how quickly they got the new track and roadbed in place, now it looks like just the bridge maybe is left, could be more not an expert in this field. Nice job all around. Thank god for the Iowa Northern . Thanks for documenting Red.
You're welcome Nancy! Yes the Iowa Northern was a very handy line!
Awesome video it amazing how fast UP worked to fix the line cheers
Well done on your derail vid, Red. It's always cool to watch a train switch rails! SUB added! Thanks mate from Australia 👍
Thank you very much SAFM from Australia!
I counted 16 tank cars wrecked & I probably missed a couple. I still love a good derailment. Cheers from eastern TN
Yeah and unfortunately one of the wrecked cars was a CNW. It was impressive how fast they had trains rolling again!
Nice crane at the RR Bridge 👍
Thats one thing about a railroad company they don't mess around when they have a derailment. Our government could learn a thing or two on how to manage something like this.
Impressive how fast they got track and bridge back together. Thanks so much for the follow up video!
Excellent coverage Red! Appreciate the update!
Thanks Michael B!
Great work Red . A most interesting video indeed , not often seen or documented so well . Must have been one hell of a crash ! Your fans in the Great White North 🇨🇦
Thanks Don and fans! It was quite the mess! Just wondering if you got to see the first derailment video? It was from the day of the derailment.
We will find it and get back to you . Thanks Red.
It’s Amazing what can be Completed when they throw a LOT of Resources with Equipment and Experienced Manpower. Tankers are Automatically Scrapped because the Risk is High that Damage occurred to them. Thanks for the Update. 👍
About 1:40 ~ Interesting... I've never seen a ballast car with a water-tight cover before. I suppose one could load the cars, cover them and then wait for a job to develop and the ballast shouldn't freeze too badly.
Those guys are really moving on the repair!
GREAT respect for those people!
I saw union Pacific come through shell rock last Sunday and it had about 75 grain cars
A company near where I live makes bridges like that in standard lengths and then adds the two short portions at each end to finish the job.
Just when Is tart thinking I am so smart I see this and am reminded of all the smart people out there, just AMAZING!
I live 3 miles from the site. I started noticing train noise again about 5 or 6pm on the 9th so you just missed em. Sounded like a new train every 15 min or so they were really slamming them through there at first. Weird how quiet it was last week with no trains going by.
I'll bet they were anxious to get trains moving again. I had to get back home that day, but did catch a detour train in Shellrock on the way home.
I can't believe how fast they cleaned that up.
I subscribed because you covered this incident better than any 'real' news crew! Thanks 🦕
Thanks Rob!
Excellent video. Love the detailed information you provide about railroading in general. Subbed.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks Road King!
Would really like to know which drone that is. We’re looking to up grade our Mavic Airs. Great video 👍🏻
Thanks JP Dunamis Lodge! I use the dji air 2s.
Sure there's still that huge mess in the field, but wowza, they got that track and bridge repaired fast! Gotta prioritize getting the rail line reopened I suppose!
Yeah they only make money when the cars move loaded so yeah every other thing cost them.
😱😱😱😱
Gooooooood videoooooooooooo!
Greetings from Spain
Thanks Juan from Spain!!
First of all God bless the Queen of England 🇬🇧 Let hee RIP
Don’t like seeing railroad derailments of any kind 🙁 Thank God nobody was injured or worse. Fantastic job those guys doing an amazing job 👍🏻 in the U.K. that would take weeks or even months to sort out 🙄
Newbie here. Great video, bridge work amazing already.
Man i would have loved to watch them pull the tanker cars out of the creek.
At 18:55:39 Today on the mills Cam for the steel highway Dispatcher says Form C 8639 for the Out of Service Track for the derailment is Void and good for normal traffic
I looked up who RCPE was, Rapid City Pierre & Eastern Railroad. A regional, which is part of the G & W group.
RCPE runs on old CNW tracks from Mankato, MN to Colony WY.
Awesome recovery work. Bridge replaced in less than a week!
They have a Trinity tank car building facility in Oklahoma city, they work off and on building the tank cars,
Imagine this happening near a neighborhood or a dense area. That open field has come in handy.
Yeah I wonder how that works. Do they pay the owner of the land or something for its use?
@@lawnmowerdude Probably. Plus they have to restore it back the way it was before.
It is always amazing how fast they fix up
I don't think I would have used the rusty old bridge supports! Do they know why the train derailed yet and what was in the tanks?
When we buy our train ticket or pay for that shipping we forget this is also what we pay for. Best wishes to these people.
Impressive progress. Hope that timber gets saved.
Some might be surprised, during this time of “shortages and supply chain issues” at how quickly they cleaned, repaired and replaced all of this.
I'm impressed with the progress they've made on the Spine Line in under a week!
Absolutely impressive
Excellent footage thanks Red!
Thank you for the videos. What I noticed is that those bridge sections are precast, and built to a module length. They were probably in inventory somewhere prior to this event. Comments?
All they need to do is pour the approaches.
Pretty scenery captured
Very good video!
Thank you, Red!! very much!! :))
You're welcome!
There are several unions threatening to strike class 1 RRs by next Friday from what I am hearing. So traffic is being pushed. It’s over train lengths and crew numbers.
My question about the second train video section is what a N&S locomotive is doing on that line.
Sometimes railroads use each others power. It's usually when there are through trains and it's easier to rent foreign railroad horsepower instead of using their own power.
Very impressive how fast the job is done but lot to do to clean everything
