Recipe for marker ink: 1 Teablespoon glycern, 1 tablesppon water, 1 teaspoon gum arabic (if you have it, it makes the ink more glossy and blendable like the new tim holtz distress markers) you can leave it out and it will be like regular marker ink. Add reinker to the mix if you need it! about 3 drops per marker to start :) Music credit (if music is present in video) Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)

Gum arabic is a binder, like a glue, and it is used in making watercolor apint and gouche. Basicly it makes your pigment stick to the paper. Also it makes the color glossier and easier to blend. It makes the ink/paint sit on the top of the paper rather than absorbing so you have more time to blend.
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich the gum Arabic I have is powder do I mix it then add the teaspoon ?? Thank you for your videos love them.
Use vegtable glycern and water (2 parts glycern, one part water) and store it in a dropper bottle, use it to refresh the pad as needed:)
i know I am pretty off topic but do anyone know of a good place to stream newly released tv shows online ?
I remember seeing this video years ago, and was referring back to is as a I refill my blender pen to make sure I'm doing it right. As SOON as I chomped down on the back of my marker to remove the cap, you said "Don't use your teeth!" Haha perfect timing. Thanks for always bringing the best crafty tips and saving this broke art student some money!
This should go viral, as well as your other marker rehab videos. Thank you so much.
Yes!! Your art table tells me you're an artist!!
For the markers use a tablespoon of glycern and water and a teaspoon of gum arabic if you have it, it makes it more like tim holtz distress markers. put 3 drops in a marker and see how it works in a couple hours. You can add color (dye-based reinker) if you need it.
For ink pads use 2 parts glycern to one part water.
I've just gotten into water based brush markers. I have a 12 set of tombow, a 12 set of spectrum noir metallic, and now 6 of the 12 colors of Nuvo water brushes... this shall be interesting. I had purchased reinkers, instead of large pads, and clean pads to make ink last. the glycerine tips are Fab! I'm Hoping to see you do a Nuvo water brush video soon.
And thank you, as always for your wonderful tutorials.
Lindsay, I just subscribed a few months ago and I cannot tell you how thank-ful I am for ALL that you do...Your my go to person when I need something~In going through ALL your you tube video's I just have one question and I mean this as a compliment and in all sincerely...IS there anything YOU DON"T DO? I craft, card make, jewelry craft, and cross stitch and I thought that was a lot..but you do it all..so thank you..I was a Porcelain doll maker for many yrs in the late 80's and 90's and they all won blue ribbons if that means anything, which they don't except to me... but thank you..and I did start a book on the great ideas you've given so I don't throw away things that I can try to fix...so thanks again. :)
So awesome! Wish I had known this a while ago ! The only markers I have are new and they're alcohol markers. I remember all my markers drying out as a kid though .
Thank you! I just found a set of markers that has been lost for at least 5 years. They are fairly dry but I know there is ink in there! I will be using glycerin and water. THANK YOU! I searched for this video after I found them.
I know this set has ink. I have tombow markers that were given to me used maybe 8 years ago. I was wondering if I could use my distress and or archival rrinkers in them. At the moment those are the only reinkers I have.
My Scan n cut came this week so it will be a while before I am spending on crafts. Outside of adhesive and Cardstock it could be September. THANK YOU!!!!!!
I would like to see a video of how to refill alcohol-based markers, and similar colors to the copics refills.
thanks so much for all your helpful tips!
It is probably better to use disilled water but I used tap water, I've never had an inkpad mold before:)
You're amazing. Currently working with Marvy Uchida Le Plume II pens and this is incredibly helpful.
thanks, those seem to dry out faster for me too!
thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Personally, they don't dry out that quickly in my experience but I'll keep an eye out for refills.
I love, love, love your videos! Thank you so much for the information. Take care. :)
Would love to know if you add distill water to it is that all you need to do to make it a solution form like you have in the video? By watching your videos I have learn so much from you. How you teach us how to make due with what we have and give it a long life and not just get a new one or just not use the ink pad the maker that is dry. Thank you for that. Waiting to see want next tool you will fix in my stamp room for me.
the tutorial is on my blog (click the link under my video) on the May 18th post:)
Hi I think that is a great idea I have a couple of question to refill markers how much do you use of the stuff and if I wanted to add more glycern for embossing how much would I use of that. Thanks Gloria
Please I would like to learn more about Gum Arabic. I have a bottle of powder GumArabic back when you used it with Pearl Ex. My husband loves how you are saving us money.
WHAT IS THE COMBINATION RATIO to this re wetting concoction please. Water/Glycerin/Gum Arabic? I didn't catch it. IM a big fan of yours and Sherpa and Ginger, Jane and Baylee. Thanks.
Great idea!! Thank you
HI Lindsay, I enjoy your demos very much! I have dried out Marvy Uchida Le Plume II markers. Can I simply refill using marvy re-inkers.?
Thank you for this demo
Great idea! TFS
wow! thanks for giving idea for arts
How do you make clear embossing ink? My versa mark embossing ink needs a refill and I can't find any in Belgium.
HiHi Lindsay i was wondering if i could use copic ink have u tried it or can u do a vid on it the ink from copic would refill the markers big time an also how would someone flushout the ink like washing the ink out of markers???
What about if you took water brush pens that have just water in it and used something like Aladine Pigment Izink to fill it with?
Do you have to have gum Arabic for refilling markers,I'm working with crayola washable markers
Hi Lindsay, I have waterbased pigment EK Success Scrapbook set of 48 about 2 decades old. Are they worth reviving of refilling? Also what kind of markers do you use to mark up a stamp?
Hi Lindsay, I see online that gum Arabic comes in liquid and powder form, would I able to use the powder form for my ink pads/ markers if I added water to it? Or should I only use the liquid form?
I have the powder form too & was wondering the same thing! Lindsay, PLEASE ANSWER.
Hi Valerie and AnnOnna. I was asking the same question. I read further down in the comments and found she answered the question already. She said dissolve it first in water and it will be fine. I was wondering if I can dissolve some and leave it as liquid in a bottle?
Do you have. A tutorial to rein blender pens also or is it the same _ the Reiner color?
You said something about homemade paint dobbers on a different video, what video was that? I am trying to find it! Thanks Karen
Can you just use glycerin and water to refresh the Leplume markers? i don't have gum arabica or ink for refills. thanks!
+Onna Koehn yes
Will try it, although was told to store them lying flat. Either way, what have I got to lose
I have powder form of gum Arabic. Is that the same as the liquid one? Can I use the powder one and mix it with the water and glycerin? I have not yet gotten my glycerin but and hoping to this week.
I think so or just use the glycerin and no GA but the GA helps it be blendable, you don't need a lot either
Lindsay. I found a colorbox petal box ink set that's been "lost" for 4+ years. All the pads R hard as a rock!! I haven't thrown it yet cuze I just knew u would let me know if it's salvageable. I have some glycerin and gum arabic but no ink refills in those 8 colors and I don't see those colors available on their website. I've never made my own inks. I have LePlumme II markers I'll try to revive. Didn't know I could refill them but never gave them a toss. I have ink refill for sepia but have lost the marker. Do u know of any brand that have empty markers? I like to use the markers to ink my Art Impression watercolor stamps and sepia color has been discontinued. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.
+Pat Cyzauskas if there is ink in there add and equal mix of water and glycerin to a shallow dish and place the pads (not touching) pad side down in the dish and let them soak up the liquid. You only need about 1/4" of liquid. Check after 10 minutes, if you don't see any ink leaking from the pads leave them longer. They need to absorb the moisture and it may loosen the pigment if it s not fully cured. You might have to push the pad into the liquid to soften the pad by just try a gentle soak first.
The Poetique markers I bought are mostly dried out so I looked up your recipe to refresh them. But its confusing bc there's a typo & it reads: 1 Teablespoon glycerin , 1 tablespoon water (& 1 tsp gum arabic which is optional). Did you mean 1 Tablespoon glycerin or 1 teaspoon? (Later in the comments you said 2 parts glycerin to 1 part water. Since I need to add some to almost all the 48 markers, should I start with 2 tablespoons glycerin & 1 Tablespoon water? Or double that ratio)?
Actually this was before the real brush pens came out. You can use 10 parts water to 1 part glycerin. The glycerin is really needed on the felt tip brush pens as a lubricant.
@@thefrugalcrafter Whoa- thanks for responding so fast- I'm glad I didn't try the 2 to 1 (glycerin to water) yet! 😄
Hi Lindsey, can I use glycerin and water to refresh my tim holtz dye ink markers. I have hardly used them and they are pretty dry. As I am sure you know they are not cheap. What about Bic and Sharpies. Thanks so much for all your good ideas. shari

This is a UK question really as when I search the internet all the reinker suppliers are in the US: Where do I find reinker inks in anything other than black and red in the UK? (I recently bought red from ebay before I saw your info and knew what I was doing) The instructions for reinking stamp pads rely on gouache in the mix but finding the ink supplies is really difficult. Not an awfully frugal option if I have to import. Thanks Lindsay and anyone else in advance that has some ideas.
I've heard of a store called "the works" from a youtuber in England that sells a kit of watercolor paints for 4 pounds. It comes with white. You can mix the white with the watercolor to make it opaque like gouache and you can use that! The UK boasts some of the finest art supply manufactures in the world (Derwent, Winsdor & Newton) so you should be able to get good stuff domestically.
thefrugalcrafter . Hi Lindsay yes I use the works a lot and have gouache (I also recommend Jacksons for art materials of all kinds and levels with wonderful offers/reductions) . I am a bit confused: do you mean that I can make the ink for the waterbased pens refill as described in the video with gouache? The reason that I was still looking for ink as you say that it is needed for the colour/pigmnet in the mix. If the colour for the water-based pen refill is essentially the same as the dye-based ink pads then I am sorted and very frugally thank you. I am working my way steadily through your videos as I need them so I watched this after the ink pad one. Thanks again, Christine
Do you use the gum arabic if so is there an alternative to this as I cant find it anywhere thanks again sandra
you can get 8 oz of gum Arabic for $10.. that is a lot.. at amazon, you can get it at Walmart also.. looked like it cost a bit more,
Question Lindsay, do I have to have the gum arabic? All I have is glycerin
I've been trying to figure out how to make blender pen ink, no one seems to sell it. I found a recipe that was 2 parts water, 1 part glycerin and 1/4tsp alcohol. It works pretty well but there just seemed to be something missing. The end product didn't have the shine that store bought blender pens have and it also seemed to want to bleed into paper that I previously had no issue with. I tried adding a little more glycerin but it just didn't seem to be the problem, even ended up plugging up one of my water brushes. After just watching this video I believe the gum Arabic may very well be the missing something. I plan on ordering some asap. If I hadn't come across this video I would have just kept tinkering with the glycerin and water, I had already thought to take the alcohol out completely and I'm about 80% happy with the glycerin and water solution as is. I said all of that to say... If your trying to rewet Crayola markers or markers that perform similarly you really don't need the gum Arabic but if you've got higher end water based markers or are trying to make "better" than Crayola type markers the I would try and get the GA. I was using inktense pencils and tombow vs the glycerin+water solution gave markedly different results. However, the glycerin+water solution in a water brush with watercolor pencils worked very nicely. Much better than just water alone. I will never use just water again.
Is there anything else I could use instead of in refill s as they are so expensive thanks again they are le plume ll thanks again .sandra
liquid watercolors or printer ink refils, you can mix the colors that you need;) If you get a printer ink refill kit you can mix up lots of colors. good luck!
Do I still add the water and glycerin to the printer ink to make it watercolour . Sorry for so many questions im new to this ink thing lol
Sandra Goodey add water to get the color you need and a bit of glycerin to help it blend;)
Do I still use the glycerin and water on the printer ink to make it watercolour and also I have tubes of watercolour paint can I use this if I add water to it thanks again. Sandra
yes use water and glycern with the printer ink. I think watercolor will clog the marker because of the pigments in tube paints rather than dye
where do i get white ink to make light printer ink colours thanks sandra
you use water and glycerin in a 50-50 mix, it is the white paper that lightens the markers:)
I have stampin up pens. The brush tips work fine but the fine tip don''t. What do I do?
Sarah Brecher try storing them with the fine tip down for a while, like in a jar, so the ink can travel to that end.
Hi Lindsay, I was so excited to try this but I have found that my markers don’t tell me wether they’re water based or something else. What do I do?
Smell them, waterbased ones should have no odor
Thanks Lindsay that helps!!! Edna
I have a black tombow marker, and i can't find a new one anywhere.
I guess it wouldn't hurt if i just dump in some indian ink in there right?
Sylvie De Bruyne nah, give it a try:)
I did, and it works great! :D
awesome video! thanks a lot:)
I want to see your artwork Minh!
I have sets of Zip pigment markers. Are these water based do you know?
I'm not sure, scribble some on a tile and add water, if they blend they are water based;)
You can search online.
Hi can I use gouache as made uo to fill my watercolour pens thanks
it will clog watercolor markers but if they are the empty barrel waterbrush kind it should be OK if you add lots of water.
My Gum Arabic is a powder.. Will that matter? I never could find the liquid so I ended up getting it in powder form and used it for my sprays that I did.
Southern Angel it should be fine, you will need to dissolve it in water to use it like a liquid, I bet it is cheaper to buy that way too!
Yes it was.. I got a big jar of it that will last me for a very long time! Thank you for the tip!
Is there a way to know the proper proportions? I asked the store and they said It Depends! Would the gum arabic have a certain viscosity or something to know that I have the right ratio of powder to water?
+Southern Angels Btq. do you know the answer to this question? Thanks!
I get my gum arabic in liquid form and it is like honey/suryp consistency but I am not sure if the powder will make a thick liquid. I think I would use 1/8 teaspoon powdered gum arabic to a teaspoon of water and add that in. Better to under do than over do
Great idea. Always thought it might be possible. Could you give the amounts of glycerin and gum arabic and ink to use for a Stampin up, Tombow or whatever pen? Thanks. Edna
Edna B just glycerin and water for a blender in equal parts or equal parts reinker and glycerin for colored markers. The gum arabic you can add to make more of a distress marker but it is not really needed.
Can I use India ink to refill them ? So they're waterproof ? :)) Thank you :)))
+Giao Nguyen Ithink you can, just don't let them dry out, keep them capped when not in use.
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich thank you so much 😊 :)))
Lindsay, 2 questions. How can you tell which markers are water markers and which are Alcohol..(I know Copic and Spectrum Noir are Alcohol) but I have a lot of the pen type Markers and have no idea which ones are water based, Can you tell me if you know? Also, I cannot print your recipes for the marker inks on this page or the one for the pigment ink..I know these are older video's but I would love to print them out to put them in my binder...Thank you so much..Thumbs UP! Victoria
+Victoria Ciolek smell the marker, if no oder it is waterbased, alcohol marker will smell like alcohol. Why not just write the recipe in your notebook?
Dumb me...I thought of that after I watched your video and did just that...thank you...
can i put copic ink in tombow markers?
Hi , with water and ink , you make what ? Excuse me , i'm french , i not understand always ! lol :)
+Fayy a refill potion for water based markers
Yes , but in the refill potion , what in ? Ohhh , my English is very bad !! lol :)
What is it : E.g. ? Merci :)
excellent tip considering Markers cost a small fortune.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Can u give me a marker
That should be reinkers lol
Use vegtable glycern and water (2 parts glycern, one part water) and store it in a dropper bottle, use it to refresh the pad as needed:)
I want markers, markers and even MORE markers!!! What deters me from overspending is the fact that my cash will turn to ash once the markers go dry. I KNEW there had to be a way for me to refill my markers when they dry out! Thank YOU for showing me how.
