    Lindsey, I found this quote and used it on my art journal page today and I wanted to pass it on to you: "At the worst, a house unkept cannot be so distressing as a life unlived." - Rose Macaulay. Back to my messy art room! Thanks for another great DIY tutorial.

    I only have the clear wink of stella, but it isn't this. However, I didn't know these brushes existed and so I'm going to look for them. I do think there is value in your DIY for shimmer though! Thanks for always finding more inexpensive versions of art supplies and sharing!!

    Thank you Lindsay for another awesome and frugal crafting idea to try! Your DIY Shimmer Brush Pens aka faux Wink of Luna type pens turned out really pretty!
    Although, I could definitely use ideas for a DIY Wink of Stella Clear pen. A Wink of Stella Clear Pen shimmer-sparkles. It's really gorgeous over colored stamped images, lettering etc. I haven't a clue how to find an ultra ultra fine shimmer pearlescent glitter like the WOS makers use.
    I think Spica Glitter Pens use ground glass of some sort in their ink, but they really, really sparkle. WOS pens shimmer-sparkle. I wonder if using a spice grinder to finely grind ultra fine pearlescent glitter would work? Probably not because somebody would have made a similar WOS pen by now LOL!

    OMG, Lindsay, would you believe I just bought myself a WofS (in clear) last weekend! Ugh, what bad timing! And, I was one of the numerous people bugging you to help come up with the DIY version of this WofS pen for us. NOW, you post this video? Your pens DO look luscious and the shimmer is stunning, but not quite the same at all. It's due to different light reflecting properties between the glitter and mica.
    The Wof S is worth all the hype. I held off for a long time and then bit the bullet. I'm glad I did, it is a fab pen! I agree with many other commenters that YOU ought to break down and buy the clear one just to see it's wicked awesomeness for yourself.
    I'll still do your crafty recipe as I love to try new things. The messier the better.
    My card-making friend recently told me (and I've also read in these comments) that the look can be best approximated by using Tsukineko's All Purpose inks, fantastiks, and their Ink Potion #9 to replicate the look. Now, can you tell us how to make Ink Potion #9??? Can it be just gum arabic (or glycerin or alcohol) and water for $7.99 for 2oz?

    Lindsay I have to say I am not sure it is like the wink of Stella pens but I still love them. Instead of one or two plain colors you have many and they look great! I am going to have to try this, Thanks for the share. I love your channel!! Keep the DIYs coming.

    Great video Lindsay, thanks to you I found the Blick silver and gold liquid watercolor! But...the pens you just made are more like the "Wink of Luna" pens, which are a shimmery metallic. Wink of Stella pens have a more glittery shimmer. I tried a couple, but they are sooo pricey for what you get. I get the exact same look by buying a jar of Twinkling H20's in the color ICE. When I use that on top of any color, I get the look of the clear WofS pen, which I think is the most popular. Thanks again for another great tutorial and have a great day!!

    Lindsay, you have so many toys and goodies! You must have a basement studio that goes on for eternity. I don't have wink of stella or whatever it is. I've looked for it occasionally at my art supply stores and haven't found it. I've also never seen those watercolor brushes you showed. But it's really cool that you had the stuff on hand to sacrifice for the sparkle watercolor brushes. Looks like fun. Craft on!

  • @BornAgainFarmGirl

    I have a Pelican watercolor set with these exact same brushes, so I am right with your plan to use these instead of buying new water pens with one suggestion..I know your a watercolorist and familiar with Windsor & Newton , so you may be familiar with a watercolor medium by W&N Iridescence Medium. This is what I suspect these wink of stella luna uses in their pens. I've used it in my watercolor paintings in the past and is it a nuisance! Shimmers its way into your whole painting by the time your done your forest scene at dawn looks like a disco tech :) .

    I am so going to try these. I think these are looking very similar to the wink of luna pens. I really don't care what they look like because they are pretty. Some times that's what it's all about. I think I found what is closest to the wink of stella clear pen & showed it on my channel. It's the Tsukineko Champagne all purpose paint. I thought it would be the frost color, but I was wrong. Thanks for giving this a try & showing us what you came up with! JIL

      I just found your channel by accident and loved your idea. It was also recommended to me by another. What do you use to lock down the inks? Ink Potion #9 or something else? I'm afraid that the glittereiness won't stay on item if I simply use alcohol to adhere it.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  10 лет назад +1

      Nina A Hi Nina, is your question for me or jill? The liquid watercolor I used for shimmer has a binder in it. I did come up with a sheer glitter pen too and that video will e up tonight. I hope you check it out:)

      Nina A I'm also looking forward to seeing what else Lindsay comes up with. I have the pens on my list for my next trip to the store. I love what she came up with. When I use the all-purpose inks I don't add a binder. They don't need one. I've never had a problem with my shimmer coming off.

    Lyndsey, I am trying to make my own Wink of Stella with the Arteza mica powders but am having a hard time finding a water brush that it will work in. I also have a big set of extra fine glitters and that definitely doesn’t work. I just ordered a 40 pack of Crayola watercolor brush pens that they have out and hope this will work. Otherwise, do you have any suggestions for cheaper water brushes that would work?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 года назад +1

      The Royal and Langnickle ones are cheap (3pack for $5) and will work but the flow to much to use as a regular water or ink brush. Perfect for glitter or mica

    I have wink of stella and I believe they may have a super fin glitter in them. When I brush on the clear the liquid is clear and there is sparkle not like pearl. But I will try your concoction and see what happens. I think yours are great but to be used possibly in a different way.

    Great video. U made something really similar to the wink of Luna brush pens. They are a little newer than the wink of Stella. The wink of Luna are more metallic and opaque like yours and the wink of Stella is sheer and really glittery. It has a really fine glitter in the mix that I think is impossible to make. Thanks

    I don't have a WofS pen either...nor have I seen those water colour pens where Ilive. Here's what I do for extra shimmer...I use my Versamark pen to colour an area and then brush on the whitish/silverish eyeshadow from the Dollar Tree that you recommended. It seems to leave a nice soft shimmer.

    A quick note to any UK watchers. Galt Paintastics are NOT the same as Elmers Paintastics. The Galt are also the devil incarnate to open and I managed to split the body of one of the pens to have a look inside, only to find it's just a standard felt tip core inside. I even tried washing out the colour from the core and refilling it with some water and pigment eyeshadow, but it just doesn't work.
    On the plus side, the Galt ones aren't a complete loss. They are great for practising Chinese calligraphy/painting with, but I wouldn't buy them specifically for art and crafts for adults.

    Wink of Stella pens are wonderful. It must have a alcohol type base as they dry almost instantly. The glitter in them is ultra fine. They are pricey but they seem to last a long time. They have a nice brush on them so you get a nice even layer and a little ball bearing in them to keep the contents mixed up well. You should try a clear one ,they are a fun supply.

    I have the clear Wink of Stella. It is a glitter pen. I think what you are making is more of Wink of Luna pens. I love mine and I think when it runs out of liquid I am going to refill it with water because there is so much glitter still in it. I don't know how you could make it more glittery like tHe WOS. Maybe some really fine glitter and the shimmer water color.

    They look like the Wink of Luna instead :)
    The thing with the Wink of Stella is the amount of sparkle and yet the subtleness. Hmm... hard to explain... It's like you've got zillions and zillions of stars on your paper and you can see each one! lol
    if you have the Tsukineko Fantastix inks, mix a little with some rubbing alcohol and spray it onto a piece of paper - it would be the closest I've ever seen to Wink of Stella without being IT.
    That was a fun mess though!

    Just wanted to share, when your wink of stella or luna pens are "empty" try adding a little water to them to get another round of use from them as there is still plenty of glitteryness and mica's on the inside of the tube, you pretty much take them apart like Lindsey did add water, shake and keep on using them.

    • @ninaa184
      @ninaa184 10 лет назад

      I too have both the WofS clear pen and the $1 LA Colors White Snow eye shadow, so I tried using a fine tipped brush dipped in denatured alcohol with the $1 stuff and it is a dead ringer for the Wof S clear pen. I did the comparison side-by-side and there is honestly no telling them apart. I wonder what do you use to adhere it to paper? Alcohol? Mod Podge? Water? I'm afraid the glitteriness won't stay stuck to project with just alcohol as the binder.

    • @sheillaallen2538

    IN the tile it says wink of luna, and in the description it says wink of stella. Which is it?

    Wink of Stella's beauty is that they are so sheer. Especially the clear- which is the one to buy if you want to get just one- it is so gorgeous. While your DIY are pretty, they aren't capturing what is so pretty about Wink of Stella. That said they don't have to be that expensive- Blitsy had them for $4. Now that is pricey if you want all the colors, but if you stick with just the clear it is just a few bucks and it is worth it...it is that gorgeous. As for Blitsy- I order from there all the time. If you don't get their emails you should.

      The clear wink of stella pen is around 7.50 here in the UK. Not too sure what the exchange rate is, but I know it's way too expensive for me, so I would be using Lindsay's version or just stick with my cheap palette of shimmer watercolour paint

      Bejay Roles I think is probably around that here in the US as well at most stores but there is a mail order company called Blitsy that offers discounts on craft supplies-some signifcant- Like Tim Holtz and some not so much. Wink of Stella individual colors for $4.54 blitsy.com/search?q=wink%20of%20stella . My point is that the color is that much more beautiful than anything else you have that to me it is worth $4...but I understand that $7 might be a little much....although I hear you can add water to the pen once it is empty and get more shimmer out of the same pen. I have several colors because they came in a set through Blitsy and I think the clear is by far the star of the line and the only one I would ever order again- I have gold, silver, pink, purple, clear, and ? can't remember.

      You also have to factor in the shipping rates for Blitsy, which start at $10 for international. That increases the Blitsy price by quite a bit.

      Ok not entirely the same idea :) I put glycerine and pearl ex into a brush pen and I watercolour with it or put some shimmer on top of alcohol marker. I,m not sure it's as shimmery as the WoS, but it works for me
