the only reason I got this lil guy was because of how cute he is, just look at him blushing, such a lil guy, turns out, he's more than meets the eye, a banger in disguise you could say
4:55 They're both "The toy gun". A lot of G1 toys had random running changes that changed colours and accessories for no discernable reason, and as a result G1 Optimus had at least 3 different rifles throughout it's life on the toyshelf, and this toy includes two of them.
He only had two distinct molds for his guns, the latter of which was meant to look more like the design used in the cartoon. It doesn't, not really, and for whatever reason even when making the new gun, they put the peg in the middle of the gun with a fake grip he can't hold.
@Jason49110 Missing Link can wear the OG Magnus armor. I saw someone do it in a video. I don't remember who it was, and I don't remember how it affects the posing, but I know it's possible. I want to say it was Baltmatrix, but I'm not sure
Spot-on mate! This is such a great toy/fidget figure. My 16yo son has SS86 and Missing link and swore he despised legacy OP. Once I had him on my desk, my son messed with him a bit. Immediately he proclaimed he NEEDED on because it was such a joy to mess with. You are 100% on about this figure being solid, well articulated, and simple. Everyone needs this figure, even if you aren’t a collector!
This vid really helped me bite the bullet on Legacy G1 Prime; was REALLY considering getting the ML version out of love for the original toy, but the Legacy version seems much more fidget-friendly X3 Will proudly keep him on my desk!
Look, Missing Link is.. fine. He's just more than I want to pay for what he is. Legacy G1 OP is perfect for what he is. I have this figure and love playing with it.
I'm pretty happy with this figure, I like how small he is and how surprisingly solid he feels. I genuinely hope that some of the... shall we say oddities of the toy (the removable smokestacks in 5mm ports, the bevy of 5mm ports in places that don't really make sense for Blast FX, and the odd swivelling feet) is future proofing for a potential G1 Universe Ultra Magnus that works like the Siege/Earthrise figures.
I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with Missing Link. They very clearly accomplished their goal as far as changing as little as possible to make for a more functional toy. But within a day of playing with ML, I knew I wanted something I'd be less scared to damage.
I may not be into the whole collecting Transformers thing but if I really would want to have an optimus prime then this would be the one I would want to get. He's small compact fully articulated very fun to transform from vehicle to robot mode and all for only $25 I think that is a steal. I can actually imagine this version of optimus right next to my gundam model kits in fact he probably be perfect. I'll definitely keep an eye out for this guy if he shows up.
The Walmart-exclusive Transformers Retro line that usually puts out redecos of the original G1 toys in the colors of the show/86 movie recently announced redecos of WFC Trilogy Bumblebee and Legacy Gears, but in original toy colors instead of show/movie colors. Something tells me we're gonna be seeing this mold again sometime soon.
This thing made me bring the Earthrise trailer (well, actually a mix of the Earthrise and Volvo trailers mashed up) and purchase an upgrade kit... it's PERFECT with that and the WfC Centurion weapon pack (which included Roller, a satellite dish, and another axe). Now he can dual-wield axes while his guns are mounted on the front of his battle station! I LOVE this toy. It's SUPER fun and now I want an entire mainline of these. Make the standard Autobots the old Combiner Wars minibot scale (varying in size, like Deluxes do now) and sell them in 2-packs as Voyagers.
Because there is no other black parts on the toy (the wheels are a different material). So casting an entire extra black spru just for the guns would be more expensive than painting whatever plastic they are on.
Yeah, I had him on pre-order. With distribution the way it is these days, you can never count on getting a transformer, even if it’s a standard release that should theoretically be on the shelf, without pre-ordering him. The orders are backed up too, because if you wanna order him now, again, a current release that should be available, he’s still a pre-order for a future stock fulfillment… 😅
On the TFW2005 boards someone did find the rifles are painted black over clear plastic, so watch yourself on those. I love the sculpt of the matrix this figure comes with but since it's held in on a 5mm peg I swapped it with the one that Kingdom Galvatron came with so I have a painted one. I also painted the yellow window on the top of his head. Yes, it's for light piping but I would have preferred it to be on the back of his head where it's less noticeable. Not a biggie anyway since even with that disabled his eyes still show just fine. I do wish this was bigger though. I'd have liked this to have been Earthrise Optimus' height, but he does make a nice desk toy.
The guns are in fact clear plastic painted gloss black, the paint is chipping off the handle of one of them (also the light piping in the head actually works though you do need a strong light to notice)
To add to this (and the remark he made about how they fit into the hands) I do not suggest displaying him with either of his guns unless you sand down the handles. My copy's right hand has some serious stress marks going almost to the point that they may actually have cracked. No issues though with his axe. Aside from that this is truly a magnificent & fun yet simple figure! Absolutely would recommend him to everyone 😊
Missing Link Optimus Prime is an impressive display piece, but it is nerve-racking to play with. The tight die-cast hip joints on those thin plastic panels make my skin crawl anytime I want to pose it, and they don't click together flush for vehicle mode, meaning they're constantly under stress when the toy is in its alt mode. I leave my Missing Link Optimus Prime in robot mode in a cool pose, and I admire it. It pains me that it is not more playable. The Legacy United G1 Prime, while not as shiny (though it still looks charming), is just so much more fun and approachable. It has the edge as a toy rather than a display piece. I'm so glad I picked it up.
I was already sold on the fun factor of this Optimus alone. Already have two G1 era Primes so Missing Link with some additional articulation, and engineering was an easy skip. Despite being smaller, love what was accomplished here at the Deluxe price point. G1 perfection with great accessories, rubber wheels, and a clever hand reveal.
I sincerely hope that Hasbro does this again with more G1 characters. I really like this Prime and I need other bots that can actually fit with it looks wise lol
I’ll likely never have the Missing Link OP, but, man, I really hope to bring this figure into my collection. Really cool they did this for folks who can’t drop hundreds on great figures! Got him. Can confirm he’s a cool little dude. So cool for that price.
This other channel complained how "cheap" construction it was. I got mine a couple of days ago. While it does have less quality thighs, the argument about being less quality than basically all deluxes fell flat. I commented that there are nearly entire lines, of both deluxes, leaders, and possibly voyagers with comparable, and even less quality. Just some Troll trying to be controversial I guess.
It really looks more the mix of both. G1 Cartoon. And G1 toy. And thats a PERFECT combination to get right for this design. And still be a easy to handle toy with no fragile worries. Man i wish the rest of the G1 cast got this treatment! Come on Hasbro
Yes, the guns ARE painted. They're cast in the same clear plastic as his windshield. You can try a VERY gentle bush with the tiniest amount of paint thinner on a swab to remove just a little, and it fits the hand way better. But the 5mm port on his back and the ones on his legs for storing the guns are unusually loose to accommodate the painted guns, so keep that in mind.
He looks so great! He’s weirdly adorable! And the fixed proportions work on him and are better than Missing Link’s, but the original toy’s proportions work better for Missing Link, specifically. I really want this guy so bad! And I’d love for more characters to get this treatment. SS86 Bee is close, but not quite the same style (but is still a superb G1 Bee). Idk how they’ll do it, but imagine a Megatron in this style? That’d be cool
Those blasters are definitely painted over clear plastic. I had to shave the paint off the handles so my copy could hold them without stressing the plastic of his hands or his legs for truck mode storage.
Honestly I'm so glad they revealed this so soon, 'cause I was really wrestling with whether to get Missing Link or not and the instant they dropped this little guy I knew I was just getting him instead
So i have the animation accurate missing link Prime. It's amazing so much fun and I love it........ but honestly this deluxe has had me way more excited and I'm still desperately hunting for it
Great review That Toy Guy!! I agree with the title of your video. lol :D I hope this figure gets a second release with a trailer. Keep on being amazing.
I really like this figure and I love the concept, but it needed more time in the oven. The legs don’t tab together, and the arms don’t tab in the cab whatsoever. I’m probably never gonna put it in vehicle mode again, such a shame for what’s otherwise an awesome toy.
Mommy can I have Missing Link Optimus We have Missing Link Optimus at home Missing Link Optimus at home. I am looking forward to this, I am not sure when my Order is due
I feel like if Sunstreaker is also having Missing Link treatment he'll gave the Legacy budget treatment as well which will be absolutely insane plus I really do hope they do a Ultra Magnus or even a Diaclone blue!
On my unit, the arms simply do not tab for the cab mode and it is really unfortunate. It’s 50% of the toy not presenting itself as intended. I was told on a popular Transformers Discord that it does fix itself over time. However, the figure in robot mode is great! To anybody tracking this one down, good luck for finding it and getting a functioning copy.
Thats two Legacy United figures with painted gun handle problems so far. I don't have this prime yet (yet! I want him) but my Quake already has stress marks on the turret port from mounting Tip Top there due to his thick ass painted purple peg.
I really want more characters to get this treatment so bad.
Yeah but this was an anniversary exclusive so I highly doubt it will happen but still hold out hope
Yeah, like Ironhide!
